FULLERTON—The AMF

Ruiz Strike Spree
870 For Three!
DOWNEY — When Leonard Ruiz, Jr., stepped onto the
approach Monday night at Del
Rio Lanes, little did he know
that he would make history!
Bowling in the Ebonite
Scratch League, the competition is fierce, but when you
can strike 34 out of 36 times
for games of 300, 300, 270 —
you know you have tamed the
dragon.
Leonard had his own pro
shop at West Covina Lanes a
few years ago, but his weapon
of choice Monday was perfected by Josh Montgomery.
(Driller for the Pro Approach
Shop at Cal Bowl.)
The only shot not perfect in
the pocket was the first frame
of game three. After 2 300’s,
would YOU be able to get to
the line? In the third frame he
left a solid nine — and then off
the sheet!
New House Record, association record, personnal record
and hopefully not a record to
be broken. Congrats Leonard
Ruiz, Jr.
ABT at AMF Carter Lanes: (back row left to right) Daryl Brandt and Jeff Juckett.
(Front row l to r) Andy Toro, Sr. and Rick Cleary

Citrus Belt’s Ted
and Betty Jones
Remembered
by Frank Weiler
MURRIETA—A few days
ago marked the second anniversary of Ted Jones passing.
A life long bowler, he and wife
Betty were among the best
bowlers at Beacon Bowl in
Lakewood in the late 1940s.
Ted regularly averaged in
the mid 190s in the years following World War Two, and
Betty was not far behind in the
170s.
Bowling brought this wonderful couple together and kept
them together for over fifty
years. It was April 23, 1950
when Ted borrowed money
to enter a twenty game match,
for a hundred dollar jackpot.
Coming from behind, Ted
won a narrow victory. The “C
Note” jackpot was enough for
Ted to propose marriage, and
a quick trip to Vegas to tie the
knot with Betty. After moving to the Inland Empire, Ted
and Betty continued to bowl
together until Betty’s passing
in May of 2000. Their son,
KELLY JONES, picked up
their love of the game, and
has averaged 230 at Cal Oaks
Bowl for several years.

TAT 2010 Amateur Nationals
Held at The Orleans in Las Vegas
February 1st - 7th, 2010
LAS VEGAS, NV—True Amateur Tournaments and The
McWilliams Family are proud to present The 2010 TAT Amateur
Nationals held at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas,
NV. This year’s TAT kicks off February 1st thru February 7th and
as always, is a week long qualifying event with over $500,000 in
cash and prizes and is strictly for Amateur Bowlers only. The
TAT is the best Amateur bowling tournament in the World because any bowler can have a real shot at winning big money no
matter what their average. TAT entrants this year will be receiving two Free Ebonite balls, a Free room night, and $500 just for
making the first round of the finals. Bowlers also once again
will have the option to go big and win $1,000 just for making
the finals and receive $1,500 for being a Daily Leader with Big
Bucks.
We have 6 different divisions that bowlers can get into and
compete against only people in their division, either by age or
skill level. We have 3 scratch age divisions as well as 2 Average
divisions including a 205 & Under Division and a NEW 189 &
Under Handicap Division. All of these divisions have their own
payouts and scratch bowlers won’t bowl against bowlers with
handicap. However, now anyone that bowlers normally bring
along with them to the tournament can bowl as well, in our new
Handicap Division and still have a shot at winning in all 10 TAT
Tournaments.
Now is a great time to come see how you rank against Amateur Bowlers from all over the world as this years TAT Amateur
Nationals is bigger and better than ever! This year we have concentrated on giving more value to our customers and we have
done all we can this tournament to give you bigger payouts and
more with your entries. We have added more money to the prize
fund, are guaranteed more money, giving away re-entry bonuses,
added a handicap division, and are giving away more bowling
equipment then ever before! Our Top 5 are now guaranteed over
$68,000 and we have increased our Top 10 as well, up to $80,000
with 6th -10th Place earning $2,500 which is an over $18,000
increase from last year’s TAT!
Also new to this year’s TAT Amateur Nationals is that every
TAT Bowler can stay one weeknight at The Orleans for FREE!!!
You heard it right, bowl the TAT and stay for free at The Orleans
which is just another way to help bowlers make money while
they are in Vegas as well as reducing their costs. The Orleans
also gave us great rates for TAT Bowlers to stay the rest of their
stay at The Orleans and TAT Bowlers will receive benefits for
doing so. The Orleans weekday rates (First Sunday to Thursday)
are $40, while their weekend rates are only $90, and Super Bowl
Sunday is just $60 for TAT bowlers. You must book in the TAT
Room Block and you must call to receive the free room night as
well as our special rates.
This year’s TAT Amateur Nationals is bigger and better than
ever. First entries will be receiving 2 New Ebonite bowling balls,
a free room night at The Orleans, up to 5 Qualifying squads, up

BOWLING NEWS
National Deaf Bowling News
by Connie Marchione
Lindy Decker-Female Bowler Of The Decade (2000-2009) ?
YORK — The above headline, if it says “Deaf Female Bowler of the Decade”, I say “YES! She
has accomplished so many records such as 847 (highest ever by deaf female) top 2197 all-events in
Great Lakes Deaf Women’s tournament, won Gold Medal in 2005 Deaflympics Women Masters,
top average 236 and Hall of Fame in her USBC Association during the 2000-2009 decade.” Who
could beat that?
Well, I recently got another e-mail from the fabulous hearing-impaired lefthander Lindy Decker
saying that the York/Adams County bowling writer informed her that she is in the race for York
County’s Female Bowler of the Decade (2000-2009) held by the York County Bowling Proprietors
Association and the results will be officially announced in December. The Award will be formally
presented at the York/Adams USBC Bowling Hall of Fame Dinner on February 2010.
WOW! I knew Lindy had lots of fine accomplishments in her local USBC Association which
inducted her into its Bowling Hall of Fame a few years ago. Let’s wait for the official announcement
of the results in December to make sure she wins this prestigious honor. That would make her the
first deaf woman ever to win such a decade award.
Deaf Senior Bowlers Of America
13th Annual Tournament Results
Taylor And Bice Take Respective Singles Titles
LAS VEGAS — The 13th Annual Deaf Seniors Bowlers of America tournament started with the
Singles event on Tuesday morning, October 13 at The Orleans Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center.
80 men and 30 women aged 55 and older participated with Doubles events following.
Los Angeles bowler Robert Taylor rolling on the first squad came at top of men’s with games of
193-278-246 for top scratch score of 717 plus his 42 handicap for 759 for the $800 prize. Defending
Match Play champion from Louisiana Mike Landry, came three pins short with 756 from 198-265227/690 plus 66 handicap for 2nd place $400. Two bowlers hit 700 but their smaller handicap placed
them 3rd and 4th. Tom Parker, Ohio scored 247-227-233 for 707 plus 63/743 for 3rd while Robert
Jones, CA with zero handicap hit 222-224-266 for 712 for 4th. The men’s prize list runs 20 places
with 628 low. Taylor’s 278 is the tournament high game.
On the women’s side. Alabama bowler Elaine Bicealso on first squad finished on top with 170198-132 for 500 plus 166 handicap, 665 toal for 1st place $300 prize. Three California bowlers were
tied for 2nd place with same 635 scores and each got $100. They are 2005 Women’s Match Play
champion Sharon Duran with 197 in her 500 plus 135 handicap, 2007 Singles champion Theresa
Gutierrez who had the high game 210 in her high scratch 518 plus 117 handicap and Helen Inga
with 461 plus 174 handicap. The last place in the money is 8th.
California Duo Morford & Loustalot Grab Doubles Title
Northern Californians Patricia Morford and George Loustalot paired together to win the $1,100
Doubles first place prize by 2 pins over other 54 Doubles pairs. Morford had 190 in her 510 while
Loustalot helpd with a 238 in his 571 along with their 252 handicap for 1333 total. In 2nd place
for $550 with 1331 total were husband and wife duo from Alabama, James White and Ann Marie
Wagnor-White. Ann Marie had 196 in her 628 while James helped with 209 in his 584, plus their
219 handicap. Mary Sickinger and 82 years old Jack Sickinger of Riverside placed 3rd with 1288
including a huge 348 handicap.
The scoring in Doubles was low compaired with Singles which showed that the senior bowlers
were tiring after 3 games in singles. While there were 3 700s and 7 600-plus in the Singles event,
the Doubles event had only 4 600 with high of 673 (173-231-269) by Texan Thomas Daugherty.
Daugherty placed in 6th (1278) with Landry who placed 2nd in Singles and their scratch total of
1212 was not even the top scratch in this event. The top scratch Doubles series was 1218 by Deaf
Team USA duo from California, Ed Abakumoff (615) and Darrell Stogryn (603) which with their
zero handicap placed them 20th out of money. The last place in money for their Doubles event was
11th 1243 score.
All-Events, Match Play Qualifying and Eliminations of both men and women will be reported
next week when I get the results.

Tan Wins First ABTA Title at West Covina
Lonzell Hits $1,005 Match Game
Andrews & Windsor Share $242 Match Series
Linbrook Bowl is Our Host Saturday • 3-6-9 is $800
12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00 & 5:30 Semis 7:15
WEST COVINA—Jhun
Tan, one of the nicest guys
I have ever met, stepped up
and won his first ABTA Title
at West Covina Lanes finally
downing upstart Yu Lam in the
title game to take home a nice
$1,000.
In our return to West Covina a decent turnout of 170,
saw cuts scores of men +25.
The Ladies topped the men at
+3. Super Seniors added to the
board were Walter White and
Romy Cajucom. Unbelievably no Super Senior women
participated in the event except Bobbie Mc Collum who
made the regular board.
Forty Five Semifinalists
took the floor and we saw Jhun
Tan lead the way at +87 to
sit out and bowl for the title.
Right behind was a pretty lady
Yu Lam at +71 who would receive a first round bye in the
single elims and enter in the
second round.
It took a +13, including
three 3 guaranteed women, to
make the top 16 single elim
finals.
In round One, Losers were
Sean Nguon, Fred Go, Thomas Licauco, Danny Guevarra,
Bobbie McCollum, Eddie
Palma and Raul Aldaz. They
received checks of 100 each.
Round two saw Sun Sundara, Youna Yun, Art Windsor and Ben Hurtado lose out.
They cashed checks of $110.
Round three got tense and
saw Yu Lam edge Bob Ricketts 194-186. Justin Taino
struck often in a 266-222 win
over Daniel Cha. So Bob and
Daniel were 4th and 5th with
fine bowling. Yu and Justin to
meet for the right to bowl Tan
for the title.
This game was close but
Justin lost his shot at the end
and Yu prevailed in a 226-200
win with Justin in 3rd place.
Tthe pretty lady off to the title
game vs Jhun Tan.
The title game is on and we
will have a new Champion.
Yu led off with a strike and
spare. Tan spared but then had
three straight opens. Yu had
a nice lead after four frames.
She however opened in the 6-7
frames and it was a dead even
tie after seventh frame. Yu
spared and struck in the 8-9 as
did Tan but he followed in the
10th with two more strikes and
a 7 count. Yu will need a double and 8 to win but came up
light and the title went to the
gentleman from West Covina.
It was a good match, either could have won, but we
welcome Jhun to the winners
circle on this eve. Great bowling by a very nice man. A title
well deserved! Nice bowling
by Yu Lam in the runner-up
positio. She really did well and
almost won the title.
Nice bowling by Justin
Taino also who really bowled
well at West Covina. He is improving for sure and how!
Tourney Hi Qualifiers were
Nick Smith +106 (men) +115
and Youna Yun led the ladies
+77. They get paid entries.
The doubles were topped
by Jerry Chang, and Don
Chung 1,376 $140, and a tie
for 2nd. Ping Romero and
Fred Go, and Chang again
with Sean Ngon 1373 and each
(562) 868-7164
place paid $120. We paid 16
places and $1020 in the $5.00
doubles!
The Match Game WAS
Matched at 148 and Mr. Super Senior Lonzell Burnett
grabbed the Cash $1,005 with
his 148 game. Best 148 I have
ever bowled claims Lonzell
_:))
Match Game is est at
$1,000 this Weekend!
The Match Series was
Matched! 555 was the score.
Mark Andrews and Art Windsor shared $242. We will estimate the pot at $300 this
weekend at Linbrook!.
The 3-6-9 Rolloff of $700
carried over as Dave Godinez,
and Jason Buenviaje couldn’t
eliminate one another and we
go for $800 at Linbrook this
Saturday.
Jhun Tan hails from West
Covina and used a Gravity
Shift drilled by Aarik Torres
at West Covina Lanes. He
thanks Aarik for the fine drilling, and Friends Jeanette
Chang and Tony Tan for the
support and friendship, and all
ABTA bowlers and friends at
West Covina.
Yu Lam is from Arcadia

for support and her Moou Liu

LAKEWOOD—The
league returned to Cal Bowl
Monday and a new season,
high for 156 and over bowlers, hit the tote board. Betty
Phillips scored 224-606 for
seasn high series, but all other
season highs remained unchanged. Super desk control
staff memer, Vicky, had everything ready for us despite her
being very busy with another
league that started before us.
Another popular staffer, Betty
McDiarmid, was availble too
if needed and Betty also visited with her many friends in
the Vevas league.
The formidable foursome,
Keystone Lanes #2 (Virginia
Gray, Daisy McReynolds,
Kathy Parrish and captain
Bernice Bennett) knocked off
three game from opponents
again and still enjoy a 6-game
lead. However, the 4-way tie
for second was broken. Fountain Bowl #2, has18 wins, followed by Keystone #3 and Cal
#3 tied at 17 wins; Cal Bowl
#1, 16 and Valley View #2, 15.
The rest of the league is closely bunched behind the leaders.
Betty’s 606 led Monday’s
honor roll, followed by Dee
Phipps 236-588, Margo McClain 230-567, Kathy Parrish
530, Doris Lewis 521, Joy
Bennett and Jerry Whitehurst
tied at 516, Jeanne Payton
509, Carol Davis 232, Madeline Majick and Joan Roper
204 games, Pris Mauricio 201,
and Bettie Wells 200.
A warm welcome was extended to Jerry Whitehurst,
making her first start in the
league this season, following
months of medical treatment
and please note she made the
honor roll too. We also enjoyed
visits by former Vegas league
members Pat Willmore and Ell
Wilson. Pat goes to Vegas with
the league and is signed on this
year. Phyllis Baldwin was not
needed for subbing so she just
enjoyed visiting up and down
the concourse and then going to lunch with the “lunch
bunch” after bowling.
NEXT WEEK Monday
10:30 a.m. October 26, at Del
Rio Lanes, and don’t forget...
NO OUTSIDE FOOD!
The coffee shop opens early to accomodate us so there is
no need to bring food.

STUDIO CITY
818-769-7600 or 877-2380
by NICE and SWEET
STUDIO CITY — As you should know (and if not, we’ll
transcribe it now) PInz is 50 years old! We are not over the
hill or nearing old age, only being the silver foxes we are
and gracefully aging. The number 50 means a lot to us, if it
is divided by 10 and add 3 and then cut it in half and multiply
it, you get the exact number of times that it took you to figure
that equation out.
PINZ ADULTS
Many of you have bowled 250’s or 750 series, but have
you ever bowled an actual 50? That takes talent and we
applaud anyone who can skillfully bowl a 50 and still have
pride in their game. Unfortunately, none of you did, so
here’s the scores:
Tavern Guild: David Quam 239/632, Mikey Witt 232, Andrew Ryan 215, Derek Brown 211, Gary Brumburgh 208.
Twilighters: Larry Schneider 234/671, Dane Price 635,

Dwayne Miller 236/647, Michael Gehrke 246/638, Zack
Sturm 223/608.
PINZ JUNIORS
Great job this week, young ‘uns. One day you’ll reach 50
and look back at how much fun you had at Pinz and what a
great person Barbara Lee is. Well, we are 50 and we already
know that our Junior Director is the cat’s pajamas. So party
like it’s 1959 and check out these scores:
Adult Junior: Max Korn 234/646, Ethan Bensinger
183/536, Noah Lander 199/523, Brad Spector 201/519,
Brad Lander 183/515.

Kayla Arriaga 86/197.
Pee Wee Bumpers: Andrew Parker 85/159.
PINZ SENIORS/LADIES
Well, you have seen 50’s before, maybe years ago or just
recently. Yet, have you ever realized that some of you are
older than the alley that you bowl at? No sweat, we still think
you’re spring chickens, young bucks, buckaroos, springaroo
bucks, or whatever else shows how young you are. Well,
look at these ageless scores:

Bowler of the Week: This week we celebrate one of our
own, MIke Da Veiny. He has bowled a terrific game on the
Wii burt has never competed against real people, that is until
last week. He “veined” “It” up and pumped those pins for all
they were worth. He finished with a 124 game. At least he
has a cool name.

TORRANCE—Our stop
before our State Scratch break
was at one of my favorite places, AMF Bowl-O-Drome.
Jeremy Glover was our
leading scorer with an 864.
His high games were 257, 226
and 214. Claudell Redwine
was next with 772 with a 243
high game.
We’re seeing a lot of
Claudell this season. He’s
made some very good improvement in his game this
year. Another big name is big
man Lawrence Merriweather
with games of 204 and 210
bolstering his 753 series.
Demenia Redwine was
the highest girl with 166/587.
Other 200 shooters were Justin Gadaire 212 and Nicholas
Richardson 201. This week’s
baker featured some trio action.
Justin-Demenia-Austin vs
Claudell-Lawrence-Patrick
ended 189-138. CLP then took
on Jeremy-Nick-Gabe. Usually, you can bank on any Jeremy Glover team, but this week
CLP eased by JNG by 10 pins.
Something about a left-handed
gutter ball or something. Congratulations to Jeremy for finishing in the 9-12th place tier
in State Scratch. This week
we’ll be at Del Rio Lanes in
Downey. See you at 1:30 pm.

The JAT made their way to the Valley for a visit to Canoga
Park Bowl. Lane conditions were soft as the bowlers attacked
the pocket. Mark Myers flew out of the gate with an 804 start
including a 300 in game 3. Myers led the qualifying field at
+312 (252 avg.) while close on his heels was James Hawkins at
+272, Max Slevcove +261 including a 300 in game 2 and Charlie
Hair at +249. Low to qualify was Stevn Roderick at +132. In
the bracket, Max Slevcove easily went 2-0 over Steven Roderick
while Jeremy Glover also swept his way into the quarters. Virgil
Hilvano took a tough 2-1 match, Brian Hernandez took down
Keyon Lemus 2-1 and James Hefley fought a tough 2-1 match
over DeeRonn Booker. Nicole Shepard remained red-hot putting
up a 755 series to take out 4th seeded Charlie Hair. Slevcove
swept again while Hawkins, Myers and Shepard all needed three
games to advance. In the semis, Nicole Shepard took out Mark
Myers in 3 while James Hawkins swept Max Slevcove to the
title match. In the final, Nicole Shepard came out hot winning
game 1 258-219 but James Hawkins was all over the pocket taking games 2 and 3 233-213 and 254-226 for his first JAT title.
Congratulations James on finally joining the ranks of champion
and congratulations Nicole on her second-consecutive 2nd place
finish. Impressive bowling all!

She Flew Up To Heaven
On The Wings of Angels
by Joy McGregor
ANAHEIM—As
previously reported, our hearts were
saddened to learn of the passing of Orange County Hall of
Famer, Eva Munson. This gracious, unasuming lady who did
extraordinary things lost her
courageous battle with Cancer
Friday, October 9th.
Eva was very modest and
when I had asked to interview
her for her up-coming induction into the Orange County
Hall of Fame, she became
tongue-tied. So I said, “Just
write a short bio to share with
all of us.” She obliged with a
“whole” paragraph. We were
able to stretch it a wee bit...
She and her beloved Kenny (I think they met in some
bowling “alley”), were marEva Munson
ried in 1961 and had two great
kids - Cheryl and Ken, Jr.
Eva didn’t start bowling seriously until 1975 and from there
began her love of the sport. She had two 300 games to her credit,
two 299’s and too many 700 series to mention, her highest being
787 which gave her the honor of holding the highest series for
women in Orange County at the time. She held the distinction
of being on the prestigious Top “10” Average list in O.C. for 10
years. Her highest 4-game series was 994 of which she had two
- one in 1996 and the other in 2006. She was just an outstanding
bowler!
Eva joined the Linbrook staff in 1988 after a six year stint at
Kona Lanes. Anyone visiting Linbrook would always see her
smiling face and hear her distinctive laugh or, if you were unlucky enough to oppose her on the lanes - poor you! She was a
tiger ON the lanes but such a pussy cat OFF the lanes.
Eva’s national bowling team was awarded the WIBC special
bowling honor of placing 1st in team with a score of 796 and 2nd
place series total of 2136 in 1994 and again in 1996 with their
series of 2190. Quite an honor!
So very many accolades and numerous honor awards were
presentd to this very special lady. She captured the WWPB Merle Mathews Invitational with a headline in the Pacific Bowler
and written by Joe Lyou, “Even Earl Anthony couldn’t have done
better.” Wow!! Some other unique headlines: Munson sizzles in
snazzy scoring session with 674 set; Munson blasts 843 topper
in Anaheim All Stars; Eva raps eight in Anaheim Loop; Eight is
enough as Munson paces So. Cal. Ladies Draft; Munson strokes
“another” 300 in Robby’s; Munson is as hot as bunsen in Open
Draft; Christmas “Eva” came early in So. Cal. 590 Classic and
one of my favorites ... “Olive Oil” Munson bowls like popeye in
draft but, did she strike any muscle poses..? She went on to claim
many, many more honors and headlines in the Traveling Ladies
Club, Open Draft, Robby’s, So. Cal. 590 Classic, Rocky Marsh
Doubles and HER 7-11 Vegas league at Linbrook. She said her
induction in 2006 into the OC/USBC Hall of Fame for Superior
Performance was one of her greatest and most cherished moments and she felt so honored.
Eva truly loved her bowling and the bowlers. She was the
secretary of the Tuesday Sr. No Tap and the Thursday night 7-11
Vegas league and took care of all the league sheet service for
Linbrook. Eva handled her illness just like she did her bowling,
with class and style and was loved by everyone.
Her 7-11 Vegas league had a moment of silence in Eva’s honor before the Thursday night session and in HER Honer, Mario
Marquez shot a “300” and Jeremy Berkeley shot a 299/802 series
... Just for you Eva!
Graveside services were held at Forest Lawn in Cypess on
Saturday, Oct. 17th and following was a “Celebration of Life” at
Linbrook Bowl.
Eva was a devoted Country Music fan; had no particular favorites, just loved it all, y’all. But I think “Cissy’s Song” by Alan
Jackson is so fitting ... as he sings ... “She flew up to heaven on
the wings of angels, passed by clouds and stars by where no one
sees, smiling and saying, “Don’t worry ‘bout me.” You know
that her assignment here on earth has been completed and I’ll just
bet she is already deligently working on her new, lofty role.
You will be missed by all who were privileged to know you
Eva. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Munson family.
Your memories of Eva are the comfort you’ll keep in your
heart forever!
