Dear Colleagues,
The landscape of massage organizations is, as always, shifting
and changing. And these shifts can and do affect you, the
individual massage therapist or licensed bodyworker. Most
recently we have seen a migration of emphasis away from
the National Certification Board and towards individual state
boards and their membership organization, the Federation
of State Massage Therapy Boards. This shift has come about
because of a concern about differences between certification
and licensing.
Both licensure and certification set standards for education
and demonstrated accomplishment in the profession. State
boards engage in licensing and are charged with protecting the
public by enforcing the laws and rules and regulations of the
massage/bodywork professions in each state. Certification is a
third-party credential and can be bestowed by any established
organization. The value of the certification is determined
primarily through tradition.

able to practice or work in a profession. That is licensure.
Usually, licensure is administered by a governmental
entity for public protection purposes and a professional
association administers certification. Licensure and
certification are similar in that they both require the
demonstration of a certain level of knowledge or ability.”

About the PERG
The Professional Education & Resource Guide is an easy reference
for continuing education opportunities for massage therapists and
bodyworkers.
The PERG offers a variety of ways to select courses that meet your
continuing education needs. Browse the pages of advertisements to
discover opportunities to enhance your skills and explore new and
exciting theories and approaches. Or look up the dates you are available
to take classes in the index at the back of the guide and choose from
among those listings.
Presently the National Certification Board for Therapeutic
Massage & Bodywork has raised the bar on standards for their
certification of massage therapists and bodyworkers. The
new Board Certification Credential is voluntary in North
Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, and has different
requirements for renewal than does state license renewal. For
example, NCBTMB Board Certification renewal will only
accept a maximum of 4 CEs earned in the self-care category
of CE classes, but licensure renewal in North Carolina does
not currently limit the number of CEs in self-care they will
accept for license renewal. Each state has its own differences
from the national certification requirements. You can review
the requirements on the NCBTMB website and on your state
board website so you don’t get caught short at renewal time.
Another credential bestowed by the NCBTMB is that of
Approved Continuing Education Provider. At this time the state
boards in states where the PERG is published all accept CE
classes taught by NCBTMB Approved Providers. However, it
will be your responsibility to be aware of content limitations,
as well as live versus distance learning class limitations, when
choosing CE classes that you plan to submit for meeting your
renewal CE requirements.

This six level (two days each level) certification program is founded on the fact that Nature has

been jeopardized. The first level of defense and healing is our own internal pharmacy. The second
level is the use of plants to assist us in this job. Come learn to safely and effectively use some the

The Level 1 class is a pre-requisite for all other classes. After taking Level 1 we recommend you take
