Bassmasters Elite In Waddington Aug.8-11
WADDINGTON - The largest eastwest river in North America will be the
scene of the seventh stop of the 2013
Bassmaster Elite Series -- and friends
from Canada are on the top of the guest
list.
The Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown at the St. Lawrence River takes
place at Waddington, New York, USA,
from August 8 to 11. The world’s top 100
bass anglers will compete for more than
$650,000 in prizes in this next-to-last
Elite Series stop and the only one in the
northeast this year.
The mighty St. Lawrence is not only
known for its legendary-size fish, but also
is known as the Fourth Coast because of
its proximity to Canada, our neighbor to
the north. Two international bridges -- at
Massena, NY and Ogdensburg, NY -- are
each about 30 minutes from Waddington. This Elite contest will have some international flair, welcoming guests from
across the border to participate in the
week-long festivities developed around
this high stakes bass fishing event.
A Hospitality Tent, American-Canadian Wounded Warrior Fishing Tournament, and even the daily singing of
Canada’s national anthem are just some
of the event’s features that have been
designed with our closest neighbors in
mind. The Elite Series’ longtime emcee,
Canadian angler Dave Mercer, is expect-
ed to be on hand all four days, along with
Canada’s other favorite fisherman, “Big”
Jim McLaughlin of “Just Fishing” fame.
Canada’s veterans are especially invited

An “American Idol” finalist, a charttopping singer described as country music’s “Gen-Y family man,” and Central New
York’s most popular country band will take
the stage on consecutive days of the Bassmaster Elite Series Evan Williams Bourbon
Showdown at the St. Lawrence River in
Waddington this August.
Bucky Covington, a best-selling country singer and finalist in Season Five of
Fox-TV’s “American Idol,” will perform on
Friday, August 9, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Jason
Michael Carroll, whose first album debuted
at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums
chart, will perform on Saturday, August 10
from 7:30 to 9 p.m. And Chris Taylor and the
Custom Taylor Band, last year voted Best
Country Band by Syracuse New Times, will
play on Sunday, August 11 from 1 to 3 p.m.
All three concerts take place in Whittaker
Park in Waddington. They’re part of the
Tastes and Talents of the North Country
Festival that will run concurrently with
the Bassmaster tournament happening
August 8 to 11.
Like virtually all of the Festival activities,
the concerts are free of charge to the public
– though not to the Village of Waddington,
host of the national fishing tournament.
Local organizers believe that having Covington and Carroll – as well as the popular
regional country band led by Chris Taylor –
will serve to further boost crowd numbers.
Local talent will be represented too.
Performances are on tap from the Backroad Bluegrass Band, Crunchenstein, the

to attend on Military Appreciation Day,
Saturday, August 10.
And the entire event is about more
than fishing: running concurrently with
the Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown
will be a “Tastes and Talents of the North
Country” festival scheduled on the Waddington riverfront. Just announced as
part of that festival: country music stars
Bucky Covington and Jason Michael Carroll, who will give free concerts Friday
and Saturday nights, respectively.
Other activities during the festival
include “The Hawg Trough,” a 50-foot
mobile fish tank that will be filled with
Warrior derby catches; a mobile fishing simulator that will allow people to
“fight” trophy sport fish; and an interactive birds of prey demonstration.
Helicopter rides, high-performance
bass boat ride-alongs, canoe and kayak
rentals, outstanding local musical talent, and so much more will also be taking
place during the festival.

Ogdensburg Zonta
Club Antique, Artisan
Show On Tap July 21
OGDENSBURG - Antique dealers and
juried artisans are being sought for the
Debbie Abel Antique & Artisan Show, now
celebrating 39 years and sponsored by the
Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club.
The show is scheduled for July 21 from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Edgar A. Newell
Golden Dome on State Street, Ogdensburg, and is prepared to offer up a spectacular show this year. This is one of the
many exciting events of the Ogdensburg
International Seaway Festival.
While many of the antique dealers who
participate have been doing this show for
years, the show has added several new
vendors of items from a bygone era. This
is the sixth year you will be able to find not
only fine antique furniture, collectibles,
glassware, forgotten artifacts, heirlooms,
and objects d’art as well as the kinds of
beautiful, one-of-a-kind, practical items
lovers of antiques have come to expect at
this show, but also quality hand-crafted
products on the artisan side of the show;
and you are just as likely to find something destined to become a cherished antique among the artisans.
In an effort to keep from competing
with the two-day craft show in the Lockwood Arena the same weekend, the Antique and Artisan Show committee has
worked diligently to make the artisan portion of the show by invitation only. This
allows them to “jury” the show by allowing only those artisans whose work and
booth design they’ve seen to participate.
Most all of the artisans are from St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties and
produce the beautiful work they do for a
living. See the Ogdensburg Zonta Antique
& Artisan Show Facebook page for updates.
A silent auction, including items from
vendors as well as outside businesses, is
extremely popular. Several vendors will
be demonstrating and Ogdensburg Area
Zonta Club Past President and retired
jeweler Sherin Cunningham will be offering free appraisals, and there is always
a restful area to be found decorated with
beautiful flowers and plants from Miller’s
Greenhouse.
Concessions will be available throughout the day, and admission is only $4. All
proceeds benefit the Ogdensburg Zonta
Club scholarships and community projects working to advance the status of
women worldwide.
If you are an antique dealer or a juried artisan wishing to participate in this
year’s show, please email [email protected] or call 323-8075.

Indian Creek Nature Center Exciting Getaway
By AMANDA PURCELL
RENSSELAER FALLS - Nestled between Canton and Ogdensburg, the Indian Creek Nature Center provides the
perfect nature-lover’s getaway.
Between its excellent bird-watching
sites and its approximately seven miles
of trails located on 300 acres in the Upper
and Lower Lakes Wildlife Management
area, there is plenty to see.
The center puts on guided wildlife
tours in the spring and fall and an annual,
but during the summer there is still plenty to do.
“We’ve a new guided tour set up at the
lowland trail with pamphlets available
at the start of the trail,” John T. Bursnall,
president of the Indian Creek Nature
Center, said.
The trail system includes an accessible
boardwalk with illustrative and informative signs and overlook platforms as well
as a viewing tower, pavilion, and restrooms.
“This year, we’ve improved our boardwalk and overlook, which are both much
more accessible now,” Mr. Bursall said.
The state park is full of wildlife. On the
trails, you can catch a glimpse of dragonflies, beavers and a blue heron.
“We’ve got a new overlook that looks
out over the marsh,” Mr. Bursnall said.
“People that come to the center can
have a picnic or can make a day out of
it, and use one of our three or four pavilions. We also have a view tower that
gives an excellent view of the marsh.”
To get to the Indian Creek Nature
Center from Canton, take Route 68
westward for about five miles and turn
left towards Rensselaer Falls on County
Route 14.
Follow this for about four miles and
watch for entrance on left. A large parking area is at the end of the gravel entrance road.

Card Board Boat Races
July, 2013
Hit The Water July 20 In Cranberry Lake
CRANBERRY LAKE - July 20th will mark
the 5th anniversary that the Cranberry Lake
Boat Club and Cranberry Lake Lodge began
sponsoring the Card Board Boat Races. The
races had a humble beginning with some
enthusiastic participants and enthusiastic
but never skeptical pit crew members.
With a great band, Giant and the Green
Foam, an outdoor eatery, a dozen and a half
entrants, and hundreds of spectators, the
event is now spreading its wings and growing.
Becky Milone, an art teacher at CliftonFine Central School, is heading up a T-shirt
design contest with her students with the
goal to design this year’s commemorative
T-shirt. The winners and all of the students
who participated in the contest will have
their designs displayed at this year’s race
with prizes provided by the boat club.
The CFCS-Parent Teachers Organization with President April Provost and Walt
Todd, owner of Todd Supply, are each graciously providing the funds for the materials
to build and register two boats for area students. These two boats will be constructed
by parents and students with the assistance
of Darren Bullard and Elizabeth Cooper.
Supplying the trophies this year, as in past
years, is Steve Gamble of Gamble’s Marina
in Carthage.
“We invite boat club members to partici-

said Bob Raymo, event organizer. “We
are very pleased that students, the Parent
Teacher Organization and school personnel
are involved in the this year’s race.”
The public can view photographs of last
year’s event by going to the Facebook page
of the Cranberry Lake Boat Club. The photographs were provided by Ellen Giraud Jenkins and Gail Gotham.
You can also check out how to build and
register a card board boat for this year’s race
by visiting www.cranberrylakeboatclub.org
under “upcoming events.”
For more information, contact Mr. Raymo at 848-3714.
The day’s schedule is as follows:

‘Plein Air’ Festival Set Aug. 1-4 In Morristown
MORRISTOWN — For more than a
century, artists have been searching for
the best light to paint their landscapes
“en plein air,” as the movement, started
in Paris, is called. That movement is still
alive and well, and will be showcased at
the Morristown Public Library Aug. 1 to
4.
Natural light became more and more
important to the impressionists and all
who followed. In 1850, painting became
a moveable feast: an American fashioned
tin tubes for carrying pigments and a
Frenchman created the box easel, highly
portable, on telescoping legs with a palette and paint box built in. Artists and
their easels dotted river banks, perched
on roof tops, sat in forest clearings
searching for the fleeting yellows and
blues of very early day, the brilliant fires
of noon, the greys and magentas of dusk.
The special quality of northern light
brought groups of artists together in
northern Europe and North America.
The movement flourished in upstate
New York with Frederic Remington and
Winslow Homer among its practitioners.
The Morristown Public Library Aug.
1 to 4 will celebrate its “Plein Air Festival
2013,” a gathering of artists from northern New York,Pennsylvania,Maryland
and southern Ontario who will be in the
village for four days, painting at outdoor
sites along the St. Lawrence River and in
the town, hosted by property owners and
the library’s committee of volunteers.
Despite the challenges of time and
place, the painters will allow quiet visitors
to watch them work. A “newsstand” outside the library will list the artists’ painting sites for each day along with news of
the other daily events, from a vineyard
exhibit and lecture, book sale, meetand-greet barbecue, kids’entertainment,
silent auction and award presentations
with door prizes. The best works will be
offered for sale with the library getting a
percentage of the selling price. There will
be daily opportunities for visitors to mingle with the artists at events.
Here’s the schedule:
Aug. 1:
Plein Air artists arrive. A list of all those
registered, their biographies, and samples of their work are available at the library.
Aug. 2:
Visitors touring painting sites can pick
up a ticket at every site for Sunday door
prize drawing.
6 p.m.: Wine and hors d’oeuvres reception for artists and visitors at BellaBrooke Vineyard, 2989 County Route 6,
Hammond.
8 p.m.: Showing of private collections
of 1930s north country artists taught
by Charles S. Chapman. Curated by Joe
McDonald of Chapman Point and Gloria Scott Johnson. Wine tasting at $4 per
glass.
Aug. 3:
Visits to painting sites.
9 a.m.to noon: Annual Morristown Library book sale at the library, 200 Main
St.
6 p.m.: Meet and Greet the Artists
chicken barbeuce at the fire and rescue
pavilion, 6703 Morris St. Artists’ work
will be on display. Tickets are $9 in advance, $10 at door.

The nation’s largest junior carp fishing contest is for boys and girls ages 11 to
18. Entry fees remain the same as last year:
$100 if registration is received by July 15 or

part of a four-person team.
Registration covers participation in all
tournament-related events during the
three days, including a pre-tournament
fishing school sponsored by Mort Backus

River.

Old Fashioned Harvest Days Exhibit Opens Aug. 31
MADRID - The St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum,
1755 Route 345, kicked off its 2013 season in May with an open
house and a living history exhibit on plowing, disking, and
planting oats to be harvested there later this year. The museum
opens at 10 a.m. and will keep public hours on the second and
fourth Saturdays of the month through October.
The past, to be sure, can still generate plenty of fun and enlightenment in the present.
“We are very excited about the living history programs the
museum will be presenting during the next six months,” said
museum board treasurer Roger Austin. “Visitors can see real
demonstrations and participate in the program.”
The other living history programs at the museum include
tractor pulling, early textile techniques, operation of antique
gas engines, home canning, and horse-hitching.
The museum’s two signature events are traditionally big draws.
The 23rd annual Old Fashioned Harvest Days Exhibition will be
held Aug. 31 to Sept. 1. It will feature a fall harvest, antique engines,
machines, autos, trucks, tractors, sawmills, a tour of the farm, farm
animals, pulling contests, food and music.
The museum, according to trustee Charles Goolden, is a proven
attraction.
Mr. Goolden said the museum draws visitors from Canada and
other states.
“The growth on the museum grounds since 2008 when buildings started being added has been very exciting requiring the efforts of many very dedicated volunteers,” he said.

ing. Day-use areas are available as well,
perfect for boaters in the St. Lawrence
River looking for a place to have a picnic.
In Waddington Coles Creek State Park
has wooded and open campsites adjacent
to a beach right on the St. Lawrence River.
It’s a great location for boaters and fishers with a marina on the mouth of Coles
Creek. A pavilion, playing field and playground round off the amenities at Coles
Creek, making for a great getaway.
The Cranberry Lake State Campground has a picnic area, shower house,
tent and RV campsites and a fishing pier
available with 173 sites total. Located
near 50 miles of well-developed trails,
Cranberry Lake is a good destination
for outdoor enthusiasts. A beach is also
available as well as day-use picnic areas
and a pavilion.
The Eel Weir State Park is situated on
the Oswegatchie River, two miles north of
the Black Lake and just a short drive away
from the St. Lawrence River. The area is
known for excellent bass fishing and the
canoeing and kayaking in the region is
ideal. 38 campsites are available along
with picnic areas and a pavilion.
On the Raquette River, located in South
Colton, Higley Flow State Park has campsites separated by pine trees and beautiful trails and river scenery to explore. The

passes through.
Another great place for boaters and
fishers, the Jacques Cartier State Park in
Morristown sports large, open lawns and
terrific views of the St. Lawrence River. A
playground and picnic area are also available.
The Robert Moses State Park in Massena is also located along the St. Lawrence River and has great fishing. Besides

In Jefferson County – but not too far
over the county line – Kring Point State
Park in Redwood is located on a peninsula and half of the campsites are located on
the water. Overlooking the St. Lawrence
River and Goose Bay, there is ample fishing, boating and swimming to be had at
the park.
The Keewaydin State Park, in Alexandria Bay, is also located on the St. Lawrence River and has steep, rocky outcroppings which make for excellent viewing
platforms for anyone looking to see the
river from a new angle.

Black Lake Offers Special Fishing Experience
The largest lake in St. Lawrence County,
the Black Lake is more than 20 miles long
and four miles wide.
Fishing enthusiasts from across the
country visit the lake which is known for
its ample stock of Bass and other species of
fish.
Asked what visitors can expect this summer at the Black Lake, Cara A. Bliss, owner
of Camp Wildwood and the president of the
Black Lake Chamber of Commerce, said
there will be “tremendous fishing as usual.”
Currently fishers are traversing the lake
in search of Northern Pike and Walleye,
Mrs. Bliss said.
Starting June 15, however, Bass season
begins and fishers will be able to test their
skill reeling in Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.
Mrs. Bliss also noted that “decent size
Crappies, Bluegills, and Perch” have been
getting hooked left and right in the lake.
“We’ve also got a lot of prehistoric critters in the lake,” Mrs. Bliss said. From Longnose Gar and Bowfin fish to Sturgeon, the
lake has many species of fish that appear
today little changed from their ancient ancestors.
In addition to fish, the lake is also home
to many beavers, otters and minks – you
never know what you might run into on the
water, especially in some of the more secluded bays and narrow straights between
the lake’s many islands.
Along with the many camps that surround the lake, visitors to Black Lake can
take advantage of its close proximity to other attractions.

Gem & Mineral Show
& Swap Aug. 24-25
MADRID - The St. Lawrence County
Rock & Mineral Club announces its 47th
Annual Gem & Mineral Show & Swap
will return to Madrid again this year. The
club is fortunate to be able to schedule
the show at Madrid’s beautiful Municipal Park and Community Center, on the
banks of the Grasse River. Show dates are
August 24 & 25. General admission for the
public is free.
This show offers something for everyone: handcrafted jewelry made with
semi-precious stones for the jewelry
lover, gemstone beads, jewelry making
supplies, and free lessons for the crafter,
museum quality crystals, fossils, and mineral specimens for the nature lover and
art collector, handcrafted gift items, free
mineral kits for the kids, mineral collecting trips at some of St. Lawrence County’s
famous rock-hunting sites for the serious
or novice rockhound, fun and fellowship
for rockhounds from all over the Northeast, and a different type of shopping experience for the general public.
Dozens of collectors from several
Northeastern states and Southeastern
Canadian provinces will set up camp on
Friday evening. Most will be offering part
of their collections for sale to the public
on Saturday and Sunday, as well as trading specimens with other vendors. Tickets will be sold for a chance to win a large
Brazilian amethyst cathedral. The winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday afternoon.
A fluorescent mineral hunt for kids
will take place after dark on Friday evening. Kids, age 11 or less, will be able to
borrow a portable black light to search
for samples of fluorescent minerals. They
will be able to keep some of the minerals
that they find. There is no charge for this
activity.
A special feature this year will be free
wire-wrapping lessons. Dave Millis, from
Pennsylvania, has been a vendor at the
show for several years. He is well known
for his gem trees and wire-wrapped jewelry. He has offered to give free demonstrations to anyone who wants to learn his
craft on both days of the show. All lessons
are free, but there will be a charge for materials.
Returning this year is a very popular
display of geodes and a geode cracker. Geodes are hollow rocks that contain crys-
tals. They were formed millions of years
ago by natural processes. Some contain
white quartz crystals; others contain amethyst. The customer may purchase a geode, then be the first person in the history
of the earth to see the crystals inside as it
is split in half in front of them. The customer gets to keep both halves.
The food concession will be open Friday evening, as well as Saturday and Sunday from 9 am until the end of the show,
featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks,
and snow cones.
At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday there will be
an auction of donated mineral specimens
and other items of interest to rockhounds.
It features auctioneer extraordinaire and
man of many hats, Schuyler Alverson,
ably assisted by Heather O’Hara. Note
that this is a time change from previous
years. For the convenience of local residents and commuting vendors, it will
now be held at the conclusion of Saturday’s sales at 4:30 p.m., rather than in the
evening.
Anyone interested in swapping and/or
selling gems, jewelry, rocks, minerals, fossils, etc, may reserve a space for a nominal
fee. (Application forms and fee schedule
are posted on the club’s website, www.
StLawrenceCountyMineralClub.org.)
Guided field trips will go to Power’s farm,
famous location for black tourmaline and
quartz crystals on Saturday, and to the
Bush farm, collecting location for brown
tourmaline and tremolite on Sunday,
leaving at 9:00 am. The fee for collecting
at each of these locations is $5 per day.
There is no charge for the public to attend
the show; everyone is welcome.
The Madrid Municipal Park and Community Center is located near the intersection of State Route 310 and State Route
345. It is at the south end of the bridge
over the Grasse River. There is parking for
many vehicles on a large, well-kept and
mowed grass lawn.
There is river access, and a playground
for the kids. Local restaurants are within
walking distance.
For more information, check the club’s
website at www.StLawrenceCountyMineralClub.org . Or contact club president
Bill deLorraine at (315) 287-4652, or

Norwood Concert Series Continues July 18
NORWOOD - The Norwood Village
Green Concert Series has programmed its
2013 season, the 40th annual season of the
venerable Northern New York tradition.
In 2013 the fully upgraded band shell will
be used to its greatest potential up to this
point in its history and the tradition of the
series unique programming will continue.
The 2013 season will be a blockbuster,
as befitting a 40th anniversary.
In recognition of this upcoming celebratory season some of the greatest artists of their genre have been programmed.
Two exceptional jazz headliners including
a Juno award winner, two diverse dance
groups, a Grammy awarded Country and
Americana singer, a much celebrated
master storyteller, a very special gospel
group, and a legendary Irish ensemble
along with many local performers will be
presented.
A celebratory season comes with a price.
For the series this price for performers
fees is considerably higher than any other
season by over $4000. It totals $37,450. It
will be money well spent and will further
enhance our area’s “sense of place” and
community. It will do it through the arts
on the most basic level - the arts in and of
the community.
The presentation of the stellar lineup
of performers continues the series’ efforts
to provide access to artistic excellence for
the public in a free, unique, inclusive and
eclectic family setting. The series is endowed with a treasured audience base.
In the long history of the Norwood Village Green Concert Series has been able to
present a wide variety of performers from
elementary school, to local and regional
artists, and to performing groups from every continent on the globe. Along the way
it has presented artists that have achieved
some of the most coveted awards in their
fields including 12 Grammy winners, 14
Juno Winners, 2 Emmy winners, 14 International Bluegrass Music Association winners, 3 Blues Foundation award winners, 3
Maple Blues award winners, a recipient of
the Order of Canada and a National Medal
of Arts recipient. The width and breadth of
these award winners continues to grow,
as the creative process is valued in the
programming. Most of the music, dance,
storytelling and other arts genres are creations of the featured performer.
The Series is supported in part by the
New York State Council on the Arts, a state
agency, with the support of Governor
Andrew Cuomo and the New York State
Legislature. It is also supported by public
moneys from the Town of Potsdam and
the Village of Norwood. Its primary support is from many organizations, foundations, businesses and individuals. The
eight acoustic concerts are supported by
The Sweetgrass Foundation.
The series continues to take donations
by check. They can be mailed to: Norwood
Village Green Concert Series, 3 Bicknell
Street, Norwood, NY 13668. All contributions are tax deductable. Norwood Village
Green Concert Series are free but there is a
“pass the bucket”. Donations are encouraged and needed.
Here is the full annotated 2013 schedule:
