‘A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM’
Ah, the stories behind this funny, funny musical!
The show ’ s creators originally wanted Phil Silvers in the lead role of
Pseudolus, but he turned them down, allegedly because he would have
to perform on stage without this glasses, and his vision was so poor that
he feared tripping into the orchestra pit. Also, during the out of down
pre-Broadway tryouts the show was attracting little business and not
playing well. Jerome Robbins was called in by director George Abbott
and
producer Hal Prince to give advice and make changes. The
biggest change Robbins made was a new opening number and
introduce the show as a bawdy, wild comedy. From that point on, the
show was a success.
The show, which opened on Broadway
May 8, 1962 , won Tony
Awards for Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Book,
and Best Director. The score, Stephen Sondheim ’ s first time on
Broadway writing both words and music, was coolly received, however,
and not even garnering a nomination. A shame! The show ran for 964
performances.
Every actor who has opened in the title role of Pseudolus on Broadway
( Z ero Mostel, Phil Silvers, and Nathan Lane ) won a Best Actor Tony
Award for their performance. Ironically, Silvers run was cut short due to
illness.
Get ready to enjoy one of the funniest of musicals!

Director, ‘A Funny Thing Happened
On The Way To The Forum’
1.How did you first hear about ‘Forum’?
I knew about ’Forum’, of its existence, when I
was a kid, but didn’t REALLY know about it until
I played a ’Protean’ as a sophomore at OCU.
2. Have you directed it before?
I have never directed/choreographed
but I am VERY excited to.
it
before,
3. What about this show appeals to you as a
director/choreographer?
I love the farcical aspect of the show.
4. What role would you like to do in this show?
If I still had the capability to remember lines,
lyrics AND staging at the same time, of course
I’d LOVE to play Pseudolus.
5. What is the musical you want to direct?
I’d really like to direct ‘Sweeney Todd’,
La Cage’, and ‘Merrily We Roll Along’.
6. What is the most fun for you about rehearsals?
Watching the actors take a note and run with it
to a place I might not have considered.
