The Kentucky Challenge —A monthly publication of the Kentucky Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God
It has been nearly a decade since I was a counselor at Summer Camp at Crestwood. Over the years of pastoring, there were seasons when every year at either Kid’s Camp or Youth Camp when I joined others from around our state to see how God would use a few days of focus to shape the lives of children. I have since delegated that responsibility to other pastors on staff or lay leaders in our congregation.
This year was different. First of all, my granddaughter (Rya) is going into the 3rd grade and it was her Iirst year to be able to attend kid’s camp. Admittedly, that was the hook. But, just as importantly, it has been a few years since our church attended Camp Crestwood and I’m aware of the comfort level parents need to have in allowing their children to attend. A Senior Pastor going to camp is often just the answer to help mom or dad feel good about sending their child for a week.
Kid’s Camp for this aging pastor was Iilled with late nights and early mornings. ‘Manna Hut’, ‘Free Time’ and ‘You’ve Got To Take a Shower’ were phrases reintroduced into my vocabulary. And, yes, by Wednesday morning I was wondering if Friday would ever arrive. But, just like previous years, God did amazing things in the lives of our children. Worship was genuine, friendships were formed, and memories were created to last a lifetime.
Beyond all of that, I was a pastor again in a way not experienced in several years. I created a bond with our kids that is difIicult to create in other ways. The experience also connected me to families in our church and paved the way for more ministry opportunities in the future. All in all, it was a week not wasted, a moment that I am grateful came my way, and an experience I plan to repeat next summer.
A special thanks to Rodney Goodlett for his amazing leadership and to the team he assembles to make camp happen each year for our children. And, to the pastors and churches that either send their kids or support Camp Crestwood Iinancially, the rewards are certainly worth it! I’m thankful to have had a summer that included Kid’s Camp. I hope that you will consider joining me if you can in 2017.
