March was an unusually busy
month at TAS. We celebrated our
36th “Double Chai” Anniversary,
as we honored Past President
Barbara Grau and Temple
Member and CEO of the Dori
Saves Lives Foundation, Emily
Slosberg, who was presented
by Dad, State Representative,
Irving Slosberg. It was a fun filled
evening...mouthwatering hors d’
oeuvres, liquor and wine,delicious
food, scrumptious desserts and
Dean Richards wonderful music... Oh...what a night!!
“Anshei After Dark” continues to grow in popularity
and attendance with 450 people turning out for the March
one -Wednesday - evening -a- month entertainment and
social happening. The season- ending grande finale
performance, Wednesday evening, April 6th will present
comedian, Carl Guerra and featuring “2 Guys” formerly
with the top 60’s group, The Highwaymen. An evening
not to be missed! Tickets on sale in the ticket office.
Our search for a new Cantor brought us several
wonderful Hazzanim, who will be davening at both Friday
evening and Shabbos morning services beginning March
25 and continuing through April 16th. Comment cards
will be distributed at services. Please take them home, fill
them out and bring to the office. Every member’s input
is important in helping us make the best choice for our
Synagogue.
Before we know it Passover will be here. We clean
the cupboards, get rid of our chametz and prepare
for Yom Tov. Passover is the time we celebrate with
family, our temple family, our community family.... Join
with Rabbi Adler, friends and family, for the first Seder
night, Friday, April 22nd at 7:00 and the second Seder
evening, Saturday, April 23. Please contact Rita Erstein
and Florence Ull, in the ticket office.
I wish you all a Zissen Pesach
Fran
The final step of our annual
fifteen part Seder ritual is known as
“Nirtza”, or desired and accepted.
In our present text it consists of fairly
recent songs and was not known
in ancient times. However unlike
every other stage enumerated in
the Haggadah, this final addition
does not refer to actions we are
performing, like blessing wine
(Kadesh), or telling the Passover
story (Magid), but rather summing
up all that we have accomplished
throughout the evening. Nirtza,
then is a kind of anomaly. No where else in our tradition
is there a concept like this of reviewing all the previous
actions without performing anything new. Some Haggadot
do not even include Nirtzah, like Maimonides. Others like
the Maharal of Prague combine Hallel and Nirtza together.
In this way the final selection of Hallel focusing on complete
future redemption is what we hope the Almighty will find
pleasing and hurry a golden Messianic era for us.
Yet, Nirtza as a distinct step performs a valuable role
both at our Seder table and in our personal lives. Not just
on the first two nights of Pesach, but really all year long.
The ritual of Nirtza gives us permission to take a deep
breath and reflect upon the evening we are concluding
and really our life journeys until this moment.
We have pondered and examined our experiences, as
we have sat around the table to remember our communal
and personal struggles, challenges, failures and triumphs.
The food we ate, the tales we have told, the memories we
have shared, both individually and as a People, have all
evoked a flood of emotions and a deep awareness of the
passing of time.
Now we are ready to proclaim in good faith and abiding
optimism in the future that we have completed our part of
this exercise. We’ve marveled at where we have come
from as Jews, and we have weaved into the narrative our
individual stories. Those present have reaffirmed their
place in the continuing saga of Israel. We have mourned
our losses and taught our children to cherish our beautiful
Torah, all on this memorable night.
We may therefore exclaim Nirtza. “Ribono Shel
Olam”, our Heavenly Father, we have kept true to our
sacred mission this evening and in our lives. We have
remembered our story and have relayed it to our youth.
The rest then is up to You. Please help us repair this
broken world and give us the strength to bring our lives
closer to You. In love and in commitment we proclaim
“Accepted, Pleasing, Desired” to You.
May all our families be blessed with a Ziessenah
Pesach,
Rabbi Raphael Adler

Each candidate will perform both during Friday evening's 7:30 pm service, and the
following morning at Shabbat services. Evaluation cards will be given out at the door.
Please help us pick our next Cantor!

Recently, two tiny stone seals dating to the First
Temple period was discovered in Jerusalem.
What makes this discovery so remarkable is it was
a 2500 year old business seal belonging to a woman.
Elihana bat Gael had a seal made with her name on it to do
business! Was she a liberal woman; self-determined?

As I See It
to hide under a rock, now we have Pastor Mark
Burns, a black clergyman who spoke before
Trump appeared on stage at an event for Trump
in Hickory, North Carolina. Perhaps, to give him
the benefit of the doubt, he did not realize he was
at an open mike, when he said Bernie Sanders
needs to convert. Politico reported him saying
He gotta get saved.! He gotta have a come
to Jesus meeting. Really?! Where does one
begin after a remark like this? Whether Trump
believes this claptrap is almost beside the point,
he has yet to disavow it. Put this together with
his remarks on Mexico and Mexicans ,and his
lack of condemning the KKK and David Duke.
Look carefully at his record, his business tactics,
his inconsistencies. All things considered, the
unacceptable has become commonplace and
perhaps even rationalized. It reflects a refusal to
respect the restrictive norms observed by those
who wish to respect and preserve civility in the
marketplace . How does one push this genie
back in the bottle?
The times ahead are troubling, indeed.
Pray for peace for all of us.

By Barbara Grau
I had thought to write
an upbeat, cheery article,
thanking the Journal committee and all those who
worked so diligently on the
Journal and the Dinner.
Congratulations for a job
well done, from the color

dress, to choice of menu and music, to the brevity, for the most part of the speeches and, yes, I
will say that and more about their efforts paying

huge success and I thank everyone who worked
so diligently on this event. A big hug and thanks
to Lorin for his great pictures.
More could be written on the evening but
events just seem t o crush and crash all the Pollyanna stuff. Israel grabs the headlines , whether
they wish to or not. Jonathan Tobin writes why
it does not matter what Israel does and according to Jeffrey Goldberg, of the Atlantic, Prèss.
Obama still thinks the obstacle to peace in the
Middle East is PM Netanyahu. According to
Goldberg, Pres. Obama believes he could have
brought about a two state solution but he won’t
because he is politically paralyzed to do so. It
must be true because the New York Times said
so in an editorial recently. Not everyone in Israel
is in love with Bibi but the overwhelming majority
of Israelis know that any further land given up
to the Palestinians will become a launching pad
for terror attacks in Israel. President Obama
and the New York Times cling to their fantasy
because failing to do so would be an acknowledgment that they have been wrong all these
years.
On another note, the genie is out of the bottle
on the Trump bandwagon. Even if one can
ignore the ignorant and prejudicial statements
made by Trump himself, for which any card carrying member of B’Nai B’Rith or ADL can wish

Want to honor or memorialize someone?
The perfect place to do this is to dedicate a
“Book Plate” in either the front of the new
Chumash or in the new Machzor.
It’s easy!
Just come to the front office.
To Our Seasonal Residence:
Please remember to secure your High
Holiday tickets. It may seem early
but, we can only assign High Holiday
aliyahs/honors when you have
your seat assignment.
Have a safe trip! We look forward to
seeing you back here in good health!

community, at no charge. However, DONATIONS ARE APPRECIATED. Refreshments are
served. Please do not bring any food from home in to the Temple.
Movie titles and descriptions are available in the special movie carousel in our lobby and on
our website. Our format has been expanded recently to include a greater variety of films. Note
that many of these “newer” movies were not made with closed captioning so please bear with
us as we attempt to diversify the types of movies being shown.

On one Wednesday a month Rabbi Adler will present a “Rabbi’s Pick Of The Month.” The
Rabbi will introduce and then have a follow-up question and answer session following the

Membership
“...in your hands!”
Dear Congregants:
The word is spreading! The word is Temple Anshei Shalom.
One of the many reasons for a temple’s success is the Rabbi.
And we, at TAS, are fortunate and blessed, to have Rabbi Adler.
It has been wonderful to see many new faces at TAS's Shabbat
services. And the community is availing themselves of the
Lifelong Learning lectures and classes being offered. We are
seeing hundreds of people at Wednesday movies and Anshei
After Dark.
Our congregation is a warm and welcoming family. This is why
we will continue to grow.
We had an Open House on March 27 and were pleased at the
turnout of new prospective members.
Wishing all our friends and family a Healthy and Happy
Passover.
Bring your friends and family to Temple with you, anytime!
Every congregant is on the membership committee!
Temple Anshei Shalom’s future is in your hands!
Shalom
Barbara Abramowitz
