About Gilbert
Gilbert is central to many of Arizona’s scenic attractions. Northeast lies the
Superstition Mountains, location of the legendary Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine,
as well as the Tonto National Forest which contains scenery ranging from
rugged desert to cool pines. South lies Saguaro National Park, home to the
giant saguaro, a plant found in only a small portion of the United States. But
you don't have to travel outside of Gilbert to discover the outdoors. Considered
the premier bird watching facility in the Phoenix metro region, the Riparian
Preserve located within Gilbert features hiking and equestrian trails and
provides an opportunity for wildlife and bird watching, where approximately
300 species of birds have been sighted.
Once known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World,” Gilbert, Arizona has
evolved into one of the fastest growing communities and the largest town in
the United States. Encompassing 72.6 square miles, just southeast of Phoenix,
Gilbert has transformed from an agricultural community into a contemporary,
urban community with a relaxed but vibrant atmosphere.
Incorporated in 1920, Gilbert owes its beginnings to William “Bobby” Gilbert
who provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 to construct a rail
line between Phoenix and Florence, Arizona.
As the 2nd Safest City and the 22nd Best Place to Live in the country, you can
experience all the West has to offer in an environment that makes you feel like
you’ve come home.
The iconic water tower stands tall in downtown Gilbert in an area that once
housed little more than the post office. Today, you will find the downtown
bustling with shops, restaurants, a theater, and art galleries.
Gilbert offers several shopping venues from unique boutiques in our Heritage
District to the SanTan Village Shopping Center. At SanTan Village, you can find
everything from Macys, Dillards, Apple, and Coach to Sephora and Barnes &
Noble, along with many delicious dining options to satisfy everyone’s taste. If your pleasure is more along the lines of nature, relax at one of our outdoor
parks. Gilbert is home to six golf courses, five major parks, four community
pools, three community recreation centers, one regional library, three theatres,
and an indoor ice arena. Throughout the year, Gilbert is host to numerous
festivals, youth and amateur sporting events, academic conferences, sports
tournaments, an art walk, and farmers markets.
There’s always something to do in our community.
We invite you to Discover Gilbert!

INFLUX
INFLUX brings together art, economic development,
and property management organizations throughout
the greater Phoenix area to provide opportunities for
Arizona artists to create site-specific temporary public
art installations in a wide variety
of locations.
INFLUX provides unique project opportunities for artists
to expand their skills, innovatively apply their creativity,
and garner public recognition for their work. INFLUX
offers new perspective on the connections between
community organizations, city governments, local
businesses, artists, and audiences.
The INFLUX initiative, currently operated through the
strategic partnership of eleven organizations in Chandler,
Glendale, Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe
was launched by Scottsdale Public Art in 2010 as an
initiative for temporary installations in vacant storefronts.
The initiative has since continued to expand and gain
momentum since its inception, increasing its positive
impact on our local communities and our Arizona artists.
INFLUX will be on display again soon. Check
discovergilbert.com for artist and timing information.
Gilbert Mural
Participants of Gilbert Leadership Class XXI unveiled their
community project which includes an art mural painted
on the south-facing wall of the American Legion Merrill
Mitchell Post 39 and an open space improvement with
park features in the once-vacant lot immediately south
of the mural. The mural depicts the Town of Gilbert in the
World War I era, circa 1917, with the exception of the
“Gilbert” sign, which was later added across Gilbert Road
in the early 1930’s. To further enhance the project, a plaque
has been created to explain the significance of the site
and was incorporated in the Heritage District History Walk.

menu created to pair with the handcrafted ales. Arizona

Cozy up at the custom Terrazzo counter, order a cocktail

robust without overcooking. You will also want to enjoy
one of High Tide’s signature burgers – made with the
highest quality short rib blend beef, or opt for one of their
many other sumptuous entrees paired with a craft beer
or wine from their extensive list. High Tide is committed to
sourcing local ingredients and supporting local suppliers,
and was even featured in Valley Lifestyles Magazine.
It may not look like a home any longer, but Joe’s Farm Grill was
created from the Johnston Family home built in 1966. Keeping
the 60’s era look, the building was altered to a mid-century
modern design of a “burger stand” while ensuring a peaceful
setting created by the large trees. Blending the indoors and
outdoors, the butterfly roof and open breezeway make for an
airy patio that offers shade and excellent views. At Joe’s Farm
Grill, they focus on common food done uncommonly well and
served quickly. Common foods such as burgers, fries, pizza,
salads, and ribs are common for a good reason: people love
them. They taste great! As much as possible, they use fruit,
vegetables, and herbs from The Farm at Agritopia, right at their
front door. You may recognize Joe’s Farm Grill as it was featured

Liberty Market
libertymarket.com
Liberty Market is an unpretentious urban bistro, located in the heart of Old Town Gilbert.
The building itself has been in existence since the early 1930’s serving Gilbert as a

doubled the store’s size in 1958, and then operated it until 1981. Even in 1981, Gilbert
had only 6,000 residents and there wasn’t another grocery store within 15 miles. Today,
Liberty Market is an award winning, Zagat-rated restaurant serving a diverse and
refined menu featuring wood fired pizza, sandwiches, salads, burgers, pasta, gourmet
style entrees, house-made desserts, and features a premium espresso bar and diverse
beer+wine list. Liberty Market serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week,

Looking for some fun ideas for your upcoming visit to Gilbert? Want to
know more about all of the amazing amenities Gilbert has to offer? If
so, check out this sample travel itinerary to inspire you in discovering
what Gilbert is all about!
Day 1:
Whether you have flown in to either Phoenix-Sky Harbor or
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, you’re surely ready to relax after
a long day of travel (see p4). Make your way to one of our
six hotels conveniently located throughout Gilbert (see p34).
Dine in one of our exceptional restaurants and discover the
Heritage District (see pgs22-31).
Day 2:
Wake up and start the day with a free continental
breakfast. Then, check out SanTan Village for unbelievable
shopping. This outdoor venue offers something for
everyone including Macy’s, Dillards, Coach, a movie
theatre, and multiple restaurants (see p17). Want some
deals? A short drive from SanTan Village, you will find
SteinMart, which offers ladies and men’s clothing along
with housewares for up to 40% off retail.
For a unique, seafood dining experience make a reservation
at HighTide, or keep it casual and enjoy a burger and a beer
at Gilbert’s award-winning micro-brewery, AZ Wilderness
Brewing Co. The craft beer is amazing and they offer a
sampling of their handcrafted beers to share or keep them
all for yourself. Be sure to take home a t-shirt or souvenir to
remember the experience (see pgs22-31).

Day 4:
Golf, anyone? With six public courses all within Gilbert, there is
something to handle everyone’s handicap (see pgs10-11). Relax
at one of Gilbert’s day spas after hitting the course (see p16).
Ever wondered if you were able create a sushi roll like the sushi
chefs you see behind the counters? At Blue Wasabi in SanTan
Village Shopping Center, one Sunday a month, you can find out.
Private classes can also be arranged for your entire family.
This is a great couple of hours spent with their chef creating
California rolls, spicy crab rolls, and a nigari roll (see p45).
Ok, we know you like adventure and you may want to experience more
than just Gilbert, although we aren’t quite sure why. Here are some
drives that will show you more of our great state and allow you to be
back in your comfy hotel room in time to change for another great meal.
•
•
Apache Trail National Scenic Byway — 40-mile drive on Hwy 88.
This route is mountainous and beautiful and should take about 2
hours.
Sedona – known for their red rocks. Wake up early and spend the
day exploring. It is worth the drive and be sure to take your camera.
Day 5:
Ready for unique? We are known for our farm to table culinary
experience. Agritopia is a perfect example of the way a
community can come together and create a total experience of
a fresh, farmer’s market. Stroll the grounds to see the fresh fruits
and vegetables along with geese, chickens, pigs, and goats.
Agritopia supplies much of the produce for many of our local
restaurants including their own (see p19).
Don’t forget to include a few hours to experience our Riparian
Preserve at Water Ranch. The Preserve is organized into
various vegetative zones ranging from marshlands to native
riparian and upland vegetation areas. Approximately 300 species of birds have been identified on the site, and many insects,
fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals have found homes there as well. Over 4.5 miles of trails weave through the park,
and there are interpretive education panels on wildlife and vegetation throughout. Viewing blinds have been established at
various locations near the edge of several ponds to further enhance the visitor’s experience. A floating boardwalk crossing
the northern end of the lake allows visitors a close up view of the fish and ducks on the water. Additional educational areas
include an ethno-botanical garden, a paleontology dig site, gardens for pollinators including a hummingbird garden, and
butterfly garden (see p11). Plus, plan to stay or come back when the sun goes down. A state-of-the-art observatory and hilltop
outdoor classroom will allow you to star gaze as well as see the space station on a clear night (see p11).

Agritopia is a community based on a
sharing lifestyle. When you visit the
community, you will notice narrow streets
lined with shade trees. Low fences with
front porches throughout the community
favor pedestrians and neighbors visiting.
Take a personal tour around the grounds
of Agritopia’s farm. You will find the a
community garden where those devoted
to growing their own produce can do so.
The garden is made up of 40 20x20 plots, a community tool shed,
shaded seating areas, and pathways. Gardeners meet to share
gardening tips as well as their produce year round. Through
the date palms and the citrus trees, you will hear chickens and
ducks. All are a part of the community and help supply the farm
stand with eggs, oranges, grapefruit, dates, and other seasonal
offerings at the honor fruit stand.
