turn - Institute for Veterans and Military Families
v-wise new york city 2014
Welcome!
Dear V-WISE Participants:
On behalf of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), the Whitman
School of Management at Syracuse University, the U.S. Small Business Administration
(SBA) and JPMorgan Chase & Co., welcome to the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of
Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) program.
Business ownership is freedom creating! Business ownership is the American dream!
V-WISE was founded based on the belief that there is no group more deserving of the
opportunity to live that dream than those who have supported a veteran or worn a uniform
themselves, pledging to defend this nation—that means you! The entire V-WISE team is
excited for the opportunity to be a part of your entrepreneurial journey!
The goal of the V-WISE program is to empower our women veterans and military spouses
to realize their dreams of business ownership through education and training, and by
fostering and nurturing a powerful network of women business owners across the United
States. V-WISE NYC includes a wide variety of instructional sessions, panel discussions,
advice from successful women in business and government, networking opportunities and
personalized counseling from small business experts.
Importantly, the V-WISE experience doesn’t end when this conference is over! V-WISE is
made possible through a cooperative agreement between the IVMF, the Whitman School
and the Office of Veterans Business Development at the SBA. That cooperation includes
follow-up support that leverages the Whitman School’s top-ranked faculty and the SBA’s
Small Business Development Centers and Veteran Business Outreach Centers at locations
across the U.S.
Over the next two days, we encourage you to take full advantage of the instruction,
resources and networking opportunities that have been designed specifically for you.
To that end, we want to highlight one unique opportunity we call “office hours.” We realize
that ‘in-class’ time will be limited, and therefore have arranged this program to give you a
forum to ask your most pressing questions in a roundtable discussion with various experts
with experience in the different activities associated with launching and growing a venture.
For this session, please come to the “office hours” between 6:15 and 7 p.m. on Saturday,
June 14 in the Pearl Room, 9th floor.
Again, welcome to V-WISE! Make the most of this opportunity, embrace the entrepreneurial
spirit and be inspired!
Sincerely,
Dr. Mike Haynie, Ph.D.

Meet the Speakers
and Instructors
Ms. Bonnie Amos
First Lady of the Marine Corps
For Bonnie Amos, family has
always been the top priority.
Born, raised and educated in
Pensacola, Florida, Amos met her Marine fighter
pilot husband while he was completing flight
school in September 1971. Since then, the
Amos’ have been a team and staunch advocates
for military families. Throughout General Amos’
career, they have relocated 29 times to 19 different locations. Amos will tell you that some were
better than others, some more adventuresome;
but all are filled with fond memories and great
stories.
Raising two children in the Marine Corps
lifestyle, Amos understands the challenges and
sacrifices that military families face. Between
the two of them, the Amos’ children attended
a total of 25 different schools for primary and
secondary education. They are now both married, leading successful professional lives and
have blessed General and Mrs. Amos with three
active grandsons and one perfect granddaughter.
Throughout her journey as a Marine spouse,
Amos has dedicated much of her time and
energy to family readiness programs, spouse
clubs and numerous volunteer organizations. As First Lady of the Marine Corps, family
readiness, to include Wounded Warriors and
their families, remain her top concerns. She is
actively involved in such efforts as the NavyMarine Corps Relief Society and Ball Committee,
Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Armed
Forces Foundation, Operation Homefront’s
Military Child Award, Military Spouse of the Year
Award, Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, Fisher
House Foundation, Marine Corps Scholarship
Foundation, the University of Idaho’s Operation
Education Program, Marine Officers’ Spouses
Organizations, and the USO.
In addition to volunteering in many areas, she
has also held a number of positions outside
of the military community. These employment
positions span the spectrum from managing
banks, starting up an aerobic dance exercise
class, operating multiple ice cream franchises,
and selling residential real estate. Additionally,
she worked for a commercial real estate development company for 22 years. It goes without
saying that included in her many life experiences,
there have been multiple and unpredictable
deployments.
While she has not loved every minute of the
incredible nomadic lifestyle that goes with the
territory of being a military spouse, she has loved
most of it. From the more difficult times, she and
her family have learned the lessons of life that
have helped shape who and what they are today.
For her part, Amos has no regrets. She and her
family consider it an honor to serve the Marine
Corps and the nation for so many years.

Mr. Larry Broughton
Co-Founder and CEO,
BROUGHTONadvisory; Founder
& CEO, broughtonHOTELS
Broughton is affectionately
known as the “Chuck Norris of Cow Country New
York” who enlisted in the military and joined the
U.S. Army’s Special Forces so that he could wear
a cool beatnik Green Beret. Long before Anthony
Bourdain made dining on spiders and snakes
trendy, Broughton sampled such delicacies
as jungle, desert and mountain garden spots
around the world as part of a Special Forces
“A-Team.”
Broughton found the ups and downs of the
entrepreneurial roller coaster even more fun
than jumping out of airplanes and followed
his own motto, “easy ain’t exciting,” launching
his own hotel company in 2001, in the face of
a national recession, the dot.com bomb and
the tragic events of 9/11. A decade later, he
has leveraged his unique leadership and team
building talents to build broughtonHOTELS.
com and BROUGHTONadvisory.com. He is the
recipient of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the
Year award and the NaVOBA’s Vetrepreneur of
the Year.
BROUGHTONadvisory empowers mature
organizations, such as corporations, nonprofits
and government agencies, to dramatically
improve by adopting, implementing and
leveraging Special Ops-inspired success
strategies and the entrepreneurial mindset.
Broughton and co-founder Phil Dyer also
assist start-ups/early growth companies that
are serious about rapid expansion to avoid
costly mistakes in the key areas of strategic

Colonel Jill Willig Chambers, U.S. Army (Retired)
Founder, This Able Vet LLC
Chambers served four chairmen
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff over
an eight-year period. In 2007, she was selected
to serve as special assistant to former chairman,
Admiral (RET.) Michael Mullen, to conduct
a focused study of wounded warrior issues
specifically in the areas of post-traumatic stress
disorder(PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Chambers built a team and spent 18 months
traveling the U.S. where she witnessed firsthand
the often heart-breaking difficulties facing
returning warriors, many of whom experienced
multiple deployments.
Understanding the urgency for both real-time
solutions and long-term prevention strategies,
Chambers assembled a team that included
world renowned psychologist Martin Seligman
and immediate past U.S. Surgeon General
Richard Carmona who is the world-leading expert
in health literacy, with the hope of increasing
resiliency, in service members before they face
adversity and reducing the stigma surrounding
PTSD for the invisibly wounded.
With her Joint Staff experience related to
returning warrior issues, she moved to the Office
of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel in
Nov. 2008 and arranged a meeting between
her team and the Chief of Staff of the U.S.
Army. They successfully presented their unique
vision as the strongest opportunity to care for
the record number of men and women in all
branches of service facing TBI and PTSD.
Chambers is widely recognized as the first
person in the history of the U.S. military to
develop a successful, sustainable strategy
designed to reduce the crippling stigma
associated with mental health challenges in a
warrior culture. Her clear vision, comprehensive
experience, understanding of the issues
at hand, willingness to think laterally and
dogged determination laid the groundwork
for the development and adoption of the first
holistic approach to wellness for our service
members. The U.S. Army subsequently
developed the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness
Program, which launched in 2009 and created
an unprecedented number of messages via
Armed Forces radio and television declaring and
encouraging the “Permission to Speak” across
all branches of military service.
Retiring in 2009 after 28 years of active duty,
Chambers “re-launched” as founder of This Able
Vet LLC, where she continues her commitment
to real-time solutions and long-term strategies
working with non-pharmaceutical alternatives
for PTSD, like neuro-feedback alongside Dr.
Tim Royer and guided imagery with Belleruth
Naparstek.
Chambers was more recently appointed to
serve on the SBA’s advisory committee on
Veterans Business Affairs and The American
Legion TBI/PTS Ad Hoc Committee. Additionally,
she was selected as the Senior Professional
Women’s Association Department of Defense
Woman of the Year for 2010 in recognition
of her rare gifts as a leader and her many
groundbreaking accomplishments over 30 years
of service.

Happy Brain Day!
IT COULDN’T BE DONE
By Edgar A. Guest
Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But she with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but she would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till she’d tried.
So she buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If she worried she hid it.
She started to sing as she tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and she did it!
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;”
But she took off his coat and she took off his hat
And the first thing we knew she’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
She started to sing as she tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and she did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it!
BE THE BEST OF WHATEVER YOU ARE
By Douglas Malloch
If you can’t be a pine on the top of a hill
Be a scrub in the valley, but be
The best little scrub on the side of the hill;
Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.
We can’t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew,
There’s something for all of us here.
There’s big work to do and there’s lesser work, too,
And the thing we must do is the near.
If you can’t be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can’t be a muskie, then just be a bass,
But the liveliest bass in the lake!
If you can’t be a highway, then just be a trail.
If you can’t be the sun, be a star;
It isn’t by size that you win or you fail,
Be the best of whatever you are!
THREE WOMEN
Gift from Jewel Manzay
And there were three women
went down the road,
as down the road went she.
The woman they saw.
The woman she was.
And the woman she wanted to be.
