TEACHING
FACULTY
The faculty is drawn from executives and practitioners in companies actively involved
in different aspects of the mining industry. All teaching faculty are professionally
qualified in their field, with a minimum of 10–20 years work experience. The
medium for instruction will include lecture notes, examples drawn from real
situations, group exercises and workshops, and a detailed course manual, as well as
the use of multi-media aids such as videos and large-screen computer simulations.
There will be ample time to question each speaker. The course will ultimately be
reinforced by a visit to a large surface coal-mining operation.

but also undertaking mining projects elsewhere in Asia.

for heavy equipment. Technical support experience in
tyre management, failure analysis, component

Eugene Gallagher
Consultant - Coal Processing,
Minserve Group
30 years experience in mineral processing and coal
preparation, including plant design, commissioning and
operations as well as research and teaching. MSc and
PhD (Mineral Processing), Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral
Research Centre (JKMRC), University of Queensland.
Lawrie Jorgenson
Manager, Mining Division, Minvest
Responsible for a medium-sized coal exploration, mine
planning and surveying consultancy based in Jakarta.
The company is currently carrying out consulting work
for a number of Indonesian coal mines including PT
Arumtin Indonesia and PT Multi Harapan Utama. Lawrie
has worked in coal exploration for more than 12 years
including the last 8 years in Indonesia. He holds a
Bachelor Degree from the University of Queensland.
Angelo Labriola
Technical Services Manager for
Orica in Indonesia
Responsible for coordinating and providing for key
customer technical needs. Over 8 years of Technical
Services blasting experience, spanning several
applications including Underground, Open Pit Coal and
Metalliferous, Seismic and Construction blasting.
Familiar with the entire range of Orica’s commercial
explosives products and technologies. Experience
throughout Australia and South-East Asia.

Responsible for monitoring and developing Thiess survey
resources. Advanced Diploma of Engineering and
Mining Surveying. 14 years experience in the
construction and mining industry. Up-to-date in latest
technology and training in the survey field.
Russell Neil
Associate Director, Crosby
Investment Bank, Indonesia
Over 10 years experience in mining, corporate finance
and accounting, both in Indonesia and overseas. Within
Indonesia, he has performed due diligence and
valuations for several of the prominent coal mining
companies, including Bukit Asam, Kideco, Arutmin,
Berau and Indocoal. Previously worked for WMC Ltd,
Eltin Ltd and Tiwest Joint Venture in Australia. Russell is a
Certified Practising Accountant (Australia) specializing in
the mining and natural resources sectors.
David Nolan

Has over 30 years geotechnical experience in a broad
range of projects throughout Australia and South East
Asia, including studies for mining infrastructure, road
works, mine developments, tailings storage, foundations
engineering, port developments, oil and gas projects.
Also involved in large-scale piling projects, including
detailed investigations for wharf structures in India, Sri
Lanka and Turkey.
Alan Nye

Responsible as Contracts Manager and Operations
Manager for PT Pamapersada Nusantara, Indonesia’s
largest mining contractor, producing over 27 million tonnes
of coal per year. Alan has 25 years experience in open
cut coal mining, with the past 12 years spent in Indonesia,
and also experience in UK, Australia, and Vietnam. Alan
is a qualified engineer, and a recognized mining expert
and speaker, especially in the field of contract mining. A
Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and
Metallurgy (FAustIMM).
Matthew Orr

15 years experience in mine-site environmental
management in several countries, with a particular
interest in acid mine drainage, rehabilitation, auditing
and management systems. Bachelor of Forest Science

5 years as Product Support Manager, and 1 year as

Keith Whitchurch

Responsible for mining consulting activities in SMG
Consultants, a member of the Surpac-Minex Group, the
developer of the most widely used geological modeling
and mining software in the world. Keith has 20 years
world wide experience in open cut coal mining,
specializing in mining equipment simulation and open cut

Colin Zwolinski
Managing Director,
Tunnel Mining Australia
30 years experience in underground coal mining
worldwide. Providing contractor services, equipment,
professional expertise and innovative solutions to
customers. In the region, the first contractor to mine coal
on a contract basis with their own capital equipment and
work force. Tunnel Mining owns and operates the largest
fleet of Roadheaders in the Southern hemisphere. One
current project is at PT Arutmin’s Satui mine in
Kalimantan, developing a pilot underground coal mine.

MINE SITE VISITS - WEDNESDAY 6 AUGUST, 2003
Delegates will have the opportunity to visit either PT Kaltim Prima Coal
(KPC), or, PT Adaro Indonesia (Adaro), on Day 3, Wednesday 6 August
2003. Delegates should indicate their preference when registering for the
course as to which mine site they prefer to visit. For logistical reasons,
mine site visits will be limited to a certain number of visitors, and
delegates may not be able to visit the mine of their first choice.

PT Adaro Indonesia
Adaro is Indonesia’s largest coal producer with sales in
2002 of 21.2MT. Delegates will view mining operations at the Tutupan pit
with multiple coal seams of 20 meters in thickness, travel down the 75km
haul road and view operations at the Kelanis processing and bargeloading facility, which has a throughput capacity of 22MT per year.
