K-9 Titan
Handler Deputy Albert Sharp
Tanigahoa Parish SO, LA
10/19/2011 - Deputy Sharp, along with
his K-9 partner, Titan, was patrolling the
area of Hwy 1055 assisting in a
manhunt for a fugitive, who was wanted
for (8) burglaries, aggravated rape of a
juvenile, (2) two home invasions, (1ct)
aggravated kidnapping, and (5cts) of
attempted murder on the police after he
had exchanged gunfire on (3) different
occasions with officers in Washington
Parish, Tangipahoa Parish, and Pike
County, Mississippi. All incidents
occurred during a fourteen-day manhunt
in wooded areas of Tangipahoa Parish
and Pike County, Mississippi. Deputy
Sharp had overheard, via radio traffic, of
a complaint on East Lewiston Road, Kentwood LA, in which the complainant advised
the fugitive was at his back door asking for water and asking to use his phone. Deputy
Sharp responded to the area to attempt to assist in apprehending the fugitive. While on
East Lewiston Road, Deputy Sharp again was advised, via radio traffic, that a Louisiana
State Trooper had spotted the fugitive behind a residence on East Lewiston near
Brumfield Lane, and the man had fled on foot into a wooded area near the listed
ntersection.
Upon arrival, Deputy Sharp was advised by Detective Mike Moore that the fugitive had
fled into a wooded area behind a residence and pointed out where the fugitive had
entered the woods. Deputy Sharp weighed the following factors and determined K-9
force was warranted to attempt an apprehension of Magee.
1. Magee was wanted for numerous felony charges, including several
counts of attempted murder on police.
2. Magee had broken into several residences in the area and had
confronted at least two of the residents with a handgun.
3. Magee was believed to be armed with several weapons he had taken
during burglaries in the area.
Deputy Sharp then deployed his K-9 partner, Titan, into the wooded area pointed out by
Detective Moore. Deputy Sharp was assisted with the track by Louisiana Trooper
Lamarca. Upon entering the wooded area, K-9 Titan began to track, pulling hard
northbound through the wooded area to an area of very thick brush. Deputy Sharp,
knowing the fugitive was armed and had fired at officers several times, decided to
release K-9 Titan from his tracking lead to clear the area in front of himself and Trooper
Lamarca. Deputy Sharp and Trooper Lamarca continued following K-9 Titan as he
continued tracking northbound through the thick brush. Both men then heard a single
gunshot go off in the brush where K-9 Titan was tracking. Deputy Sharp and Trooper
Lamarca immediately took cover, and Deputy Sharp began calling for the dog. After
several calls to K-9 Titan, the dog returned to Deputy Sharp with blood covering his right
leg. Deputy Sharp observed K-9 Titan had been shot in the head, observing an entry
point next to the dog’s right eye and an exit wound to the right side of his neck. Despite
his injury, K-9 Titan attempted to resume his track of the suspect at which time Deputy
Sharp had to call him a second time.
Via radio traffic, Deputy Sharp advised that K-9 Titan had been shot. Deputy Sharp then
picked up K-9 Titan and rushed him out of the wooded area to Detective Mike Moore's
unit. The dog was transported to Kentwood Veterinary Clinic, where he was stabilized
and then transferred to Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center in Mandeville, LA.
Upon arrival, K-9 Titan was treated for shock, stabilized a second time, and was taken
into surgery, where his right eyelid was repaired and the exit wound closed. Deputy
Sharp was advised by Dr. David Kergosien (LAVRC) that Titan had been shot at point
blank range and that the bullet missed his right eye by less than 1 cm. The dog was
kept for treatment overnight and released to the care of Deputy Sharp on 10/20/2011.
Upon his release, K-9 Titan required several weeks of eye treatments for burns with (5)
different eye drops being administered by Deputy Sharp multiple times per day. The
burns resulted from the muzzle blast of the weapon, which damaged his right eye.
Deputy Sharp was later advised by Detective Moore that upon the fugitive’s
apprehension, he stated K-9 Titan had bitten him, and he attempted to fight him off, but
the dog refused to release the bite, at which time he shot K-9 Titan in the head. Deputy
Sharp was also advised by Trooper Lamarca that he believed Deputy Sharp’s decision
to release K-9 Titan to clear the area had prevented the fugitive from firing at both of the
officers.
For his tenacity, bravery, and selfless dedication, K-9 Titan is chosen to receive The
Case of the Year and The Valor Award.

Deputy Ken Hertweck - K-9 Trax
Vanderburgh County SO, IN
According to a Sheriff's Office new release, Deputy Kevin Hertweck went to a home in
the 3900 block of Old Henderson Road to a serve a warrant to revoke the probation of
Raymond Hill, 39.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams said while deputies were trying to serve the
warrant, Hill released three pit bulls, which immediately attacked the dog, Trax, and
Hertweck.
During the exchange, Hertweck drew his gun and fired a round in an attempt to save
Trax from the pit bulls. At the same time, Trax jumped and was struck by the round,
killing him instantly, Williams said.
Hertweck had been Trax’s handler since the dog joined the K-9 unit.
“It’s a big deal to our office and our people,” said Williams. “That dog was incredibly
important to us.”
Williams commented on the tragedy of the situation, saying “there’s a special bond that
occurs between the dog and its handler.”
“That was his partner, they worked together, they went home together,” Williams said.
Trax was buried Friday.
