Demolition Derby crashes records with huge crowd
Charlea Mills
Saturday night marked the
continuation of the smashand-crash event that draws a

Yarnall said, “We had the largest attendance and the most
participants that we’ve ever
had.” This was the 13th year
for the annual event.
This year’s event featured
three different events: semimodifieds, compacts and
modifieds. Hometown favorite Rusty Newman, of Cassville, took second place in
both the semi-modified category, where he placed behind
Washburn’s Chris Stidam, and
compact category, as well as
battling his way into fourth
place in the modified division.
His brother, Ryan Newman,
took second place in the compacts division and third in
modifieds, just ahead of Rusty.
As an added excitement,
the youngest driver of the
night, Zack Blair, 15, of Washburn, snagged the fourth place
title in the compacts division.
This was Blair’s first competition.
Oklahoma native Bobby
Arms took first in both compacts and modifieds. Arms
placed in previous years’
events, as well.
Cassville native Rusty Newman makes a hard hit, pushing a car into the side of Red Blair, of
Washburn, at Saturday night’s Demolition Derby.
Rebel Recycling had two
drivers this year, Rick Forest
and Justin Dipley, who took
third and fourth place respectively in the semi-modified
division.
The event was so busy, that

stand and began offering al-

Cox, 53, of Kansas City,

The chase ended on South
Scenic Avenue in Springfield when the truck Cox

and he tried to steal a pickup after shooting the driver
in the shoulder. Deputies
shot Cox and took him into
custody.
According to Sheriff
Mick Epperly, two separate Barry County burglar-
ies on September 8, one in
Leann and one in Golden,
were solved by Cox and
Hamm’s arrests. Epperly
said, “They’re clearing up
a lot of cases that these two
were involved in now.” He
said that two other burglaries include one in Stone
County and one in Carroll
County, Ark.
Epperly also said that
Cox’s car chase went from
Springfield to Republic
then back up into Springfield before his car was
disabled by a spike strip

events
On Wednesday, a Cassville man was arrested
on charges of terroristic
threats, a class C felony.
John Herald Kisling, 47, of
Cassville, was being arrested at 7:34 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, for domestic assault in the third
degree. While on the way
out of the residence on 8th
Street in Cassville, Kisling
yelled that he was going to
shoot all of the officers, according to the affidavit of
probable cause.
Then, Kisling allegedly
tried to kick Cassville Officer Colt Beck and Deputy
Ruark while being put into
a patrol unit. Once in the
Barry County Jail, Kisling
continued to make threats
toward the correctional officers.
Kisling threatened 38
officers, claiming he was
going to shoot all of them
when he got out of jail, ac-
Kisling
cording to Officer Beck’s
affidavit.
Kisling was charged
with terroristic threats
and was given a $15,000
cash-only bond by Judge
Robert Foulke. Kisling has
also charged with domestic
assault in the City of Cassville. He is still in the Barry
County Jail as of the time of
press.

The mayor of Seligman Jerry Montgomery announced at
Monday’s City Council meeting that he is resigning due to
health problems. Montgomery
has served almost three years
during his current term, and
previously he served two years.
At Monday’s City Council
meeting, Montgomery announced his resignation. “Due
to my health, I am going to retire. I’m going to turn it over to
these young fellas, I’m just not
doing real spiffy,” said Mont-
gomery.
Brian Nichols, Seligman
city clerk, said,“Jerry’s resignation was kind of expected, yet
I was still surprised. He really
liked his job.”
In December, the city will
start accepting candidates for
the election in April. Until then,
they are going to be have to find
a recommended person to sit
in as mayor.
Before the meeting Monday
night, a public hearing was held
regarding the City Library. The
council made the decision to

Last month, the library only

in July, only two DVD’s. “The
numbers speak for themselves,”
said Nichols.
There will be a day set where
people from the community
can come to the library and
take home items they would
like out of the inventory. The
city will donate or recycle any
remaining library materials.
After all the library materials are gone, the city will utilize
the building for court dates and

Joy Romulus Petty entered
this world September 5, 1922,

He was the eighth of nine
children born to Elsie and
Isaac Petty and has three siblings from his father’s second
marriage.
Joy served in WWII and
was stationed on an island
Air Base in Guam for the final
bombing assaults on Japan. After the war, Joy returned
to Ukiah, Calif., and married
Alma Myers.
Joy was pre-deceased by
his sons, Harold Petty and

Rose, and husband, Archie
Dunsing, of New Plymouth,
Idaho; daughter-in-law Debra
Brush, of Boise, Idaho; son,

brothers, Ike Petty, of Sacramento, Calif., and Vern
Petty and wife, Lois, of Cassville; and one sister, Maxine
Broan, of Fairport, N.Y.; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen
great-grandchildren;
and
a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom feel greatly
blessed to have had Joy in
their lives for so many years.
As anyone who knew Joy
would tell you, HE LOVED
TO FISH!! but didn’t particularly like to eat them. He and
his brother, Vern, fished regularly at Roaring River State
Park in Cassville, and he was
always looking for someone
to give the fish. He also loved
to hunt mushrooms and was
noted for finding some of the
largest “chicken of the woods”
ever seen in Barry County. In
2007, Joy came to live with
Harold and Debra in Idaho.
He was truly a bright spot in
the lives of all who knew him.

Cassville to participate in drug take-back day
Cassville Police Department is again participating
in the D.E.A. Prescription
Take Back Day. This will be
held September 26, between
the hours of 10 a.m. and 2
p.m. Medications can be
dropped off at Cassville City
Hall at 300 Main Street. The
entrance will be in the back
of the building using the
Council Chamber door.
The Prescription Take
Back Day is to help people to
properly dispose of unused
medications, both prescription and over-the-counter.
Proper disposal of medication helps to protect the
environment and keeps the
medicine from being flushed
into water systems. This also
helps keep the medication
out of the hands of people
who do not have a prescription or need for the medication but want to use it for
recreation.
“We want to encourage people to take the time
to clean out their medicine
drawers and cabinets and
properly dispose of their unused medicine,” said Cassville Police Chief Dana Kammerlohr.

their resignation.
James Wood was honored by the Irwin Easley American
Legion Post 118 for outstanding and dedicated service.
Leslie R. Crider, a native of Wheaton, was named assistant administrator at the Missouri State Chest Hospital in
Mt. Vernon.

The Cassville High School Industrial Technology Department was the recipient of two Packard Bell Multimedia
Computers.
Kelli Beuterbaugh won the Grand Champion and Best
Udder in the open show at the Ozark Empire Fair.
Cleo Ethridge, of Cassville, won 1st place in the 19411949 category of Shell Knob’s sixth annual car show held

Following the passing of
a 3/8-cent transportation
sales tax last year, discussion
regarding how roads will be
repaired and maintained
in the city has continued
to be a heated topic. Monday’s Cassville City Council
meeting brought some closure to the questions about
how the city will decide
where to start spending the
money that’s been collected
since last November.
Alderman Jon Horner
stated, “Citizens have seen
nothing done for the last 20
years on their roads. While
I’d love to see asphalt on
all of the roads in town, we
need to see something done
that’s realistic. I’d like to get
as much done as possible to
get the town looking better.”
Phil Hutchens, owner
of Hutchens Construction,
spoke to the council to provide some insight on what
different road treatments
typically cost and what they
can expect to get done based
on the revenue they have.
Thus far, the city has collected $273,423.02 since last
November. By the numbers,
chip and sealing a mile of
road costs just over $23,000,
assuming there are no issues
that need to be fixed first.
Overlaying with asphalt, on
the other hand, costs over
$103,000 per mile, assuming no milling or base work
has to be done first. Cassville has 72 total miles of
streets.
Horner said, “If we can
do as much as we can with
chip and seal to get us as
many miles covered as we
can, it’s a great plan. We
need to see improvements.”
The decision was made
Monday night to hire someone to grade the streets inside the city, per alderman
Terry Heinz’s request, and

Local author’s book to benefit Central Crossing Senior Center
could only remain a dream.
After all, how could such
a grandiose plan be done
when it would require so
many volunteers and with
such limited funding?
The small group was
motivated by the desire to
build a better community.
Recognizing it was worth
a shot, albeit a long shot,
they each chipped in $10

any hope of becoming reality, though, would require
a community of volunteers

Lamar claims 38-6 victory over Cassville Cross Country
Lee Stubblefield
Missing 14 starters from
last year's team, the Lamar
Tigers had a lot of questions
going into the 2015 football season. After improving to 4-0 with wins over
both Monett and Cassville,
Scott Bailey's team showed it
found the answers.
The Class 2 Tigers won
this game in every key category: controlling the line of
scrimmage on both sides of
the ball; winning the field position battle; and scoring on
offense, defense, and special
teams. Lamar's only blemish for the night was in the
penalty department, where
the Tigers were flagged ten
times.
The Cassville defense
hung in against Lamar's
power running game, but the
Wildcats found themselves in
a 24-0 hole at halftime. With
his team trailing by only 3-0
late in the first quarter, River
Phelps punted away from the
Cassville 26-yard line. Lamar's Luke Hardman gathered in the kick and raced 54
yards for a touchdown.
Then, on Cassville's first
offensive snap after the
score, Lamar's Todd Morrow
picked off a Leigh Cox swing
pass out in the flat and raced
in from the 15-yard line for
another Tiger tally with 2:14
remaining in the first quarter.
The Wildcats finally
earned a first down on the
following series. A lack of
first down efficiency consistently put the Wildcats in
second and long situations
in full swing at Seneca
Jeremy Huse Photography
Cassville’s Leigh Cox is pictured above as he runs the ball for the Wildcats Friday night.
early in this game. Without
big fullback Kyle Ruark for
the night, the Cassville running game relied mostly on
scatbacks River Phelps and
Garrett Knight, and yards
were hard to come by against
the tough Tiger defensive
front. Even finally moving
the chains was accomplished
via a Lamar penalty. But
the opportunity faded, and
Phelps punted away on the
second play of the second
quarter.
Lamar scored in just six
plays, with Hardman skipping the final 28 yards on a
quarterback draw.
Trailing 24-0, the Wildcats finally mounted a drive
as the clock dwindled, and
the scoring hopes failed
when Cox was trapped for
a loss on 3rd and 8 at the

Lamar 38-yard line. Phelps
punted with less than a minute left on the clock, and
Lamar was content to run
out the final seconds before
halftime.
The Tigers opened the
third quarter with a 12-play,
89-yard, clock-consuming
drive that effectively ended
any comeback hopes. Danny
Embry bolted off right tackle
to score from the 12-yard
line at the 7:06 point of the
quarter. Morrow, Lamar's
senior all-conference kicker,
drilled another PAT to push
the lead to 31-0.
The Wildcat Nation got a
taste of Murphy's Law on the
next possession when Lamar
recovered a fumble at the
Cassville 16-yard line. Matt
Whyman was tackled just
short of the goal line on first
down, then sneaked in on the
next play as the 38-0 score
invoked the running clock.
The Wildcats finally
scored late in the final quarter when Steven Hunter barreled into the end zone from
10 yards out to create the
38-6 final score.
The Hunter score ended
a streak of 12 scoreless quarters for the Wildcats against
the Tigers.
"You can't make mis-
takes against a good football
team," Coach Lance Parnell
said after the game. "Those
mistakes get magnified, good
football teams take advantage of mistakes."
Parnell didn't waste time
dwelling on the might-havebeens after the game, He was
already planning for next
week's Barry County Brawl
against Highway 37 rival
Monett in just the second
home game of the season for
the Wildcats.
"I'm not sure I remember
what our stadium looks like,"
Parnell deadpanned. "There's
no better way to come home
than to play your arch rival."
Cassville hosts Monett on
Friday night at Wildcat Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Southwest Spikers record two wins
The Southwest volleyball
team rallied for non-conference wins at Galena and Diamond last week.
After losing the first set in
both matches, the Lady Trojans stormed back for victories, improving their record
to 7-2-1.
"It's never easy to win on
the road, and it's more difficult when you are behind,"
said Coach Steve Voyak. "The
girls really responded in a
difficult situation, twice."
Against Diamond, Southwest fell behind early in the
first set, and the Wildcats
cruised to a 25-18 win.
"They had a large, loud
crowd and their girls were
pumped up," said Coach
Voyak. "We stress trying to
involve all the hitters and the
setters did a nice job mixing
it up, and then going to the
hot hand."
Senior Savana Leonhardt
finished with 11 kills, includ-
ing 9 in the final two sets.
Senior Jaime Shrum added
15 kills, 6 coming on tips,
and junior Sydney Leroy was
10 for 10 serving with 2 aces
and 16 digs. Shrum served
the first eight points of the
deciding set and the Wildcats
never recovered.
Against Galena, Southwest dropped the first set
25-23, but won the second in
convincing fashion at 25-13.
Junior Rebekah McKeever
led the way against the Bears
with 10 digs and 2 kills.
"Rebekah was a calm and
steadying influence when we
got behind," Coach Voyak
said. "We like to use her as a
hitter, but she is also a nice
passer and made multiple
tough digs that led to attacks.
Digging the ball out of the
front row can be difficult, but
she remained focused and
helped get the lead and we
never looked back."
Leroy and Shrum also
went 21 for 21 serving and
added 3 aces. Through 10
games, Leroy is 61 for 61
serving with 12 aces.
"Syd does all the little
things," Voyak said. "She's
fundamental, makes smart
decisions and has a high volleyball IQ. Serving at 100 percent this far into the season is
unbelievable, but she served
at 98 for about half of last
season. She's capable."
In junior varsity action,
the Lady Trojans also swept
games with Galena and Diamond. Freshman Maggie
Robbins had 12 aces in the
two games and has 41 for the
season. Sophomore Kristen
Hendrix had a huge game
against Diamond going 10
for 10 serving with 2 aces and
adding 9 digs and a kill.
Southwest has a busy
schedule this week with road
games at Blue Eye and Verona
and a home game with Cassville. On Saturday, the girls
will play in the Greenfield
Tournament with pool play
games against Exeter, Golden
City, Sarcoxie and Greenfield.

Freshmen win thriller at Lamar
15A
In a game that started
much like any other game,
but ended so differently than
most, Cassville’s freshmen
football team claimed an
exciting victory at Lamar on
Monday. Cassville scored on
their first drive of the game
to take a 7-0 lead.
Lamar answered with
back to back touchdowns
to jump in front 14-7. Just
before halftime, the ‘Cats
pounded into to the end zone
again to close the gap to 1413 at intermission.
A routine, ordinary first
half of football turned into
a thrilling, heart pounding
second half of action.
Lamar scored the first
points of the second half to
claim a 22-13 lead. Cassville
responded with a touchdown, bringing the score to
22-19. Once again, Lamar
scored to extend their lead to
30-19.
Again, the Wildcats answered with a touchdown
and 2 point conversion reception by Trevor Morgan to
get within 3 points at 30-27.
After a defensive stop by the
Wildcats, the offense took
over midway through the 4th
quarter.
Reaching deeply into the
playbook, the Cassville drive
gained many yards and lots
of momentum on a reverse
pass from Ethan Hoppes to
Shannon Haney.
A few plays later, on 4th
down, Haney reciprocated by
throwing a strike to Hoppes
in the back left corner of the
end zone. The extra point
gave the Wildcats a 34-30
lead with two minutes left in
the contest.
After converting on a
huge 4th down play, Lamar
put another touchdown on
the scoreboard to take a 3634 with less than a minute
remaining on the clock.
After the Lamar kickoff,
Cassville took over near midfield, out of timeouts, and
trailing by 2 points.
A Haney to Hoppes pass
connection moved the Cassville offense deep into the
Tiger territory and renewed
the Wildcats hopes for a victory. Those hopes become
reality when Haney once
again tossed a touchdown to
Hoppes in the back corner
of the end zone with 12 seconds remaining in the game,
giving the Wildcats a 41-36
come-from-behind victory.
Anthony Tolbert and
Haney each contributed two
rushing touchdowns for the
‘Cats, while Hoppes hauled
in two touchdown passes.
In addition to Morgan’s 2
point conversion catch, Andrew Berndt added three extra point kicks to contribute
to the Cassville scoring total.
Both Coach Artherton
and Coach Rogers were
pleased with the resiliency
and determination exhibited
by the young Wildcats.
Rogers said, “Had we
played better throughout the
game, we probably wouldn’t
have needed this comeback
to win.
“However, it was great to
see the kids never give up, execute in pressure situations,
and find a way to win. This
was a very exciting game to
be part of, but I may be getting too old for many more
of these.”

The
Cassville
Lady
Wildcats found McDonald
County as tough as a warped
wall on Monday night, dropping a straight set volleyball
match to the visiting Lady
Mustangs, 20-25 and 21-25.
Cassville entered the match
with a 2-2 record but could
not scale the .500 mountain
against McDonald County.
The Lady Mustangs
jumped out to an 8-2 lead
behind a strong service run
by Destiny Arnall. The lead
stretched to 15-8 before Brianna Hemphill became the
first Cassville server to shake
the one-and-done curse.
With Mac leading 16-10,
Chelsey Small scored with a
block at the net to pull the
Ladycats within 5 points.
But Arnall fashioned another
service run for a 22-15 advantage, and the Lady Mustangs won the first set, 20-25.
McDonald County was
impressive at the net, and
even more so from the ser-
vice line. Cassville's defense
was sorely tested by an array
of hard and accurate serves.
Even though the Lady Mustangs only recorded three
aces, their service game led
to a number of unforced errors.
After a tentative 3-3 start
to the second set, Cassville
stretched to an 8-3 lead behind another strong service
run by Hemphill. Mac reclaimed the serve on a smash
by Brittney Stone, and then
Stone ripped off five straight
serves to give the visitors a
10-8 lead. Alexis Cieslinski
staunched the bleeding with
her kill shot, but Bailey Tyson nailed a pair of aces in
a service run that propelled
the Lady Mustangs to an
18-9 advantage.
The Ladycats scrapped
back to within 22-18, and
then to 24-21 when Tyson
hit long on Cieslinski's serve.
But Mac won out on an errant serve, 25-21.
Cassville goes on the road
against Barry County neighbor Southwest for a nonconference match on Thursday
night at Washburn.

on State Highway 39 in
Leann near Aurora. Then
the home’s owner, Carol
Walker, arrived home, she
said there was a black sport
car in her driveway. When
she went in the house, Cox
and Hamm were inside,
carrying out items that belonged to Walker.
At that point, Cox allegedly pointed Walker’s
own .30-30 rifle at her and
told her to get out of the
house before shoving her
as he walked past. Cox and
Hamm both threatened to
kill the her multiple times.
Walker left the home to
go back to where her fouryear-old granddaughter was
in the car and left.
Charges were filed on
that case on September 10
after Hamm was identified
by her car. Epperly said
that she has a sister living
in Golden which tied her
to the area. Cox and Hamm
were each charged with burglary in the first degree, assault in the first degree and
stealing for the Leann burglary. Judge Johnnie Cox
set their bonds for $50,000
cash-only each.
Within an estimated
two-hour window of the
Leann burglary, Hamm and
Cox allegedly also robbed a
home on Farm Road 1210
in Golden. According to the
affidavit of probable cause,
they stole four antique
lamps, three boxes of jewelry and an antique mirror
and brush, worth around
$190.
When interviewed in jail
by Barry County detectives,
Hamm admitted that she
and Cox had burglarized
the home. Hamm threw the
property out of the car window while being chased by
Greene County deputies.
Cox and Hamm were
each charged with burglary in the second degree
and stealing. Judge Robert
Foulke gave each of them
$25,000 cash-only bonds.
Hamm is currently being
held in the Barry County
Jail while Cox was released
back to the Greene County Jail after being treated
for his injuries. A Greene
County judged denied a
bond for Cox.
Epperly confirmed that
Cox was recently released
from prison for other
crimes. He said, “He just
served 22 years, but I guess
he wanted to go back.”

130 participating meat processors around the state and
let the processor know how
much venison they wish
to donate to the program.
Hunters can donate a few
pounds to a whole deer.
The processor will package
the ground meat, which will
be given to local charitable
agencies for distribution to
hungry Missourians.
The cost of processing
is the hunter’s responsibility, but funds are available
to help with processing
costs when a whole deer is
donated. CFM reimburses
processors a predetermined
amount for each whole deer
donated. This allows processors to reduce the processing fees to hunters. In
addition, many processors
have local funds available
that allow deer to be processed for free or at reduced
cost. Contact individual
processors to determine if
local funds are available.

Shell Knob author Jo
Twidwell just released “All I
Ever Wanted Was to Be Normal,” a motivational self-help
book.
“All I Ever Wanted Was to
Be Normal” is an autobiography of a 32-year-old woman
who was addicted to alcohol,
was living with her abusive
boyfriend and was depressed
and suicidal. But Jesus heard
her cry for help. He led her
on the extraordinary adventures of being a Christian.
“All I Ever Wanted Was to
Be Normal” is about God’s
loving kindness and childlike faith. She believed in
what she read in the Bible,
and miracles happened! Every chapter in this book describes a miracle — something only God could do,
including deliverance from
alcoholism and freedom
from compulsive promiscuity.
Published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, the
book is available through
bookstores nationwide, from
the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore,
or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com.
Twidwell shared her experience, faith and hope
with recovering alcoholics
and their family members
through Sunrise Ministries
in Wichita, Kan., in the mid1980s. She was a freelance
copywriter in Wichita for
12 years. In 1996, Twidwell
moved to Shell Knob and
married Mike Twidwell in
1997. They are members
of Creative Arts of Shell
Knob, where Mike sells his
woodcarvings and Jo offers
personalized children’s storybooks. In 2011, Twidwell
won first place for one of her
children’s books entitled “Tin
Can” from the Ozark Creative
Writers’ 44th Annual Conference in Eureka Springs, Ark.

Pity the unfortunate 20 percent.
But as an advertiser, it's the 80 percent
that you should be concerned about.
* The majority. The people who read
a paper. They're also the people who are
more highly educated and who have
greater purchasing power.
That's who reads the paper. And that's
where your advertising dollars should be.

Cut With Care.
Electric power tools make quick work ofl awn and garden chores that
otherwise could take all day. But be sure you go slowly enough to pay
attention to electrical safety as you work.
Keep electrical cords in good repair, and make sure they don’t
get in the way of cutting tools that could damage the cords and create
a dangerous situation. Also, remember that electric tools and cords
must never come into contact with water.
