Welcome to Halifax County, the heartbeat of North Carolina’s Roanoke Valley. We would like to
help make your transition to our area as quick and easy as possible. We have prepared this guide to

LOCATION & CLIMATE
HALIFAX COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Halifax County is located in northeastern North Carolina at
the center of the US East Coast, halfway between New York
and Florida. Interstate 95 runs through Halifax County with
connections to Interstate 85, Interstate 40 and US Highway
64 within 30 miles. Our network of Interstate and multi-lane
highways connects Halifax County to the entire United States.
Halifax County is within 90 minutes of several of the fastestgrowing metropolitan areas in North Carolina and Virginia,
including Raleigh, Durham, and Greenville in North Carolina,
and Richmond and the Hampton Roads Area in Virginia.
Washington, DC and North Carolina's world-famous Outer
Banks are within a three-hour’s drive.
Climate
Halifax County's moderate climate makes it a great place to live and do business. The area
enjoys warm summers and mild winters. The average temperature in January is 37.7 degrees
and in July is 78.7 degrees. Average annual precipitation is 46.1 inches with a growing
season of 230 days.

Housing
Housing and utility costs in Halifax County are among the lowest in
the country with a wide variety of housing choices including downtown
living, neighborhood subdivisions, waterfront homes, modern
townhouses and historic treasures. Housing prices are extremely
competitive. Whether looking for a starter, mid-range or a luxury home, Halifax County's housing
market can meet your needs.
Recreation
Endless leisure and cultural activities - water sports, fishing and kayaking abound on Lake
Gaston, Roanoke Rapids Lake, and the Roanoke River. Municipal parks, golf, tennis, baseball
and stock car racing are just a few of the sporting opportunities available in the area. Live
performance and community theaters, outdoor concerts, art galleries, historic tours, local
festivals and craft fairs are all here for the choosing.
Tourism
The things to see and do in Halifax County are unmatched. Enjoy the
sights and sounds of Sylvan Heights, the world’s largest waterfowl park.
Walk the footpaths to the past in Historic Halifax, birthplace of
independence. Take in all the history and natural beauty of the Roanoke
Canal Museum and Trail, North Carolina’s “longest” museum.
Wander the seven hiking trails or enjoy camping and picnicking at Medoc Mountain State Park,
site of North Carolina’s first winery. Celebrate and honor the many achievements of current
servicemen and women and veterans at the Roanoke Valley Veterans Museum. Satisfy your
shopping desires at Riverside Mill, the largest gallery of craft art on I-95, with a QVC outlet,
antique mall, and auction house.
It is often said the simple pleasures in life matter the most. In the Roanoke Valley, we could
not agree more. And the wide variety of recreational opportunities available here reflects that
belief. One of the best places to find an array of
water-related activities is Lake Gaston. The lake is 34 miles long with
over 20,000 acres of water surface and 350 miles of shoreline. Lake
Gaston offers you a choice of swimming, wind surfing, water skiing
and other boating activities.
If you prefer fishing, Lake Gaston, Roanoke Rapids Lake, and the
Roanoke River are a fisherman's paradise. Fishing is an option year
round for a variety of species including large-mouth bass, striped bass, and wall-eye. Local
guides are available for tourists and local residents who would like to visit our lakes and river.
The riverfront Town of Weldon is designated as the "Rockfish Capital of the World."
For the explorer in all of us, the Roanoke Canal Trail offers a seven mile walk, stretching from
the Roanoke Rapids Lake Dam to the old corn mill in Weldon. You can spend the afternoon
enjoying a picnic overlooking the aqueduct. Another place to hike or enjoy the afternoon
outdoors is at Medoc Mountain State Park, with over 2,300 acres. The park offers streamside
fishing, hiking, picnicking, group camping, canoeing and nature studies.
The City of Roanoke Rapids has an outstanding parks and recreation program. With 15 tennis
courts and seven multi-purpose athletic fields, the Recreation Department offers numerous
programs in soccer, softball, baseball and most other sports with different leagues for all ages.
There is also an indoor swimming pool and two outdoor pools.
If you like to spend your leisure time golfing, then you will enjoy the
golf courses at Chockoyotte and Scotfield Country Clubs. Both
facilities feature 18-hole golf courses, outdoor swimming pools, and
tennis courts. There are also several public golf courses around Lake
Gaston. For the fitness minded, there are private athletic clubs in the
Roanoke Valley which offers racquetball, aerobics, treadmills,
lifecycles, and more.
The Roanoke Valley is also rich in history and heritage. Today our culture and heritage are
reflected in special events and theater productions held throughout the region. Events such as
Halifax Days, Harvest Days and the annual Haliwa-Saponi Indian Pow Wow attracts visitors to
witness this heritage firsthand. The Lakeland T h e a t r e C o m p a n y in Littleton offers the
opportunity to enjoy the more refined arts. Dinner theater programs are held regularly
throughout the year. It's a wonderful way to relax and enjoy classic theater productions.
Roanoke Rapids is the home of the Roanoke Rapids Theater located at Exit 171 off Interstate 95.
Concerts and other live entertainment venues are scheduled regularly at the 1,500 seat facility.
GOVERNMENT
HALIFAX COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
There are 100 counties in North Carolina and each one has a Board of Commissioners. In
Halifax County we have six elected Commissioners who serve four-year terms. The Chairman is
elected annually by the Board and serves a one-year term. The Board oversees all departments
in the County through a County Manager form of government. The Board sets policy that is
carried out by the County Manager.
The Commissioners enact policies such as establishment of the property tax rate, noise and
subdivisions outside municipal jurisdiction, and adoption of the annual budget. The Halifax
County Board of Commissioners meets on the first Monday and third Tuesday of each month in
Halifax, NC.

The length of time after establishing residence varies depending upon the state

All driving residents of North Carolina are required to obtain a driver’s license upon establishing

Motor Vehicle Inspections
New residents must have their cars inspected within 10 days after purchase of auto license.
Thereafter, inspections are required annually during the same month as the first inspection.

Air Transportation
The Halifax-Northampton Regional Airport located at 700 Gregory Farm Road, Halifax, NC

Halifax Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is located in Roanoke Rapids and has over 204
beds and over 1,000 medical professionals. HRMC offers comprehensive medical and surgical

Halifax Works - An occupational health service staffed by a Physician Assistant, an
Occupational Health Nurse and two Occupational Health Assistants. Halifax Works provides
drug and breath alcohol testing, physicals, vaccinations, TB screening, hearing testing,
pulmonary function evaluations, respirator fitting and workers compensation injury treatment.

Our Community Hospital, a Critical Access Hospital, is located in Scotland Neck. Other

EDUCATION
Our citizens place great emphasis on education and throughout Halifax County you'll find a wide
range of high-quality educational opportunities. Students starting in pre-school can progress
through high school, vocational and technical training, certificate programs or a four-year
college degree without having to leave the area. Excellent libraries and active parental
involvement are just some of the reasons why many of our schools and students excel.

All schools are accredited by the State of North Carolina. In addition to a solid instructional
foundation based on courses of study required by the state, many unique programs are offered,
including extensive foreign languages, advanced placement courses, cultural arts programs,
vocational education, and special student programs such as the Roanoke Valley Early
College Program which allows seventh and eighth graders to take college courses and
graduate from high school with an associate’s degree and/or two years of college transfer credit.

Beginning School or Starting at a New School
If you are relocating to Halifax County and have a child entering school here for the first time,
there are a number of things to take care of, including registering your child for school. Most
students are assigned to a school district based on the home address of the parent or guardian.
Newcomers and those who have moved to a new school attendance area in Halifax County

North Carolina's community college system is recognized nationally for its customized workforce
training programs and offers a wide variety of occupational certification and continuing
education programs. Halifax Community College (www.halifaxcc.edu) serves the Roanoke
Valley and offers technical and vocational education programs, college transfer, and associate
degrees in many areas of study.
Within a forty-minute drive are Chowan University and North Carolina Wesleyan College. North
Carolina State University (NCSU), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH),
North Carolina A&T State University (NCA&T), Duke University, and East Carolina University
are all located within a 90-minute drive.
Eastern Carolina Christian College & Seminary offers a doctorate of ministry program. The
