Houston leads the nation in retail job growth
for the fourth consecutive year, reports the
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
We’re not surprised. No
matter whether you’re
looking for a pair of bedazzled flip-flops or a Chanel
bouclé jacket, you can find
it. We’ve explored the city’s
shops, from the Galleria to
the Heights. Here are some
Joy Sewing
of our favorites.

THE GALLERIA
I learned how to shop — and ice skate — at the Galleria. Since then,
I’ve seen the retail complex grow into a mecca for Houstonians
and tourists alike. With nearly 400 stores and its signature ice
rink, the Galleria is the largest mall in Texas and the fourth
largest in the country, with more than 24 million visitors each year.
The flagship of the Simon Mall chain is anchored by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue,
Nordstrom and two Macy’s stores. If you feel like splurging, shop the luxury lane near
Neimans — Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Prada and Louis Vuitton boutiques beckon. The Galleria’s

LUNCH STOPS
A
stop for lunch may be the best money
you spend all day — and retailers
know it. The dining options in the
Galleria alone are mind-boggling. Shoppers
can enjoy everything from a chicken-salad
sandwich in the jungle that is RAINFOREST
CAFE to a veal chop at the TONY DEL FRISCO’S
DOUBLE EAGLE STEAKHOUSE.
Bistro N A fresh
Our favorite stop is BISTRO N, which is located berry and fig salad
just past the lingerie department on the third floor with goat cheese
of NORDSTROM, 5192 Hidalgo, in the Galleria. The
inviting bistro recently got a makeover, and its dining room shimmers
in coppers, reds and golds. It is both dramatic and dynamic, but still
soothing. We wish every restaurant offered such flattering lighting.
The lunch menu is what you might expect from a restaurant catering
to women: rustic sandwiches, big salads and entrees that offer big
flavors but are scaled to lighter appetites. On a recent visit, we tried
the Fresh Berry & Fig Salad, which was dotted with spiced almonds and
goat cheese, and topped with a fragrant vanilla bean vinaigrette.
We were seated at the counter, which wraps around the open kitchen.
It was a great spot for regrouping, watching a chef build a pizza from
scratch and enjoying a glass of peachy sangria.

Houston-native Solange
Knowles (sister to Beyoncé)
kicked off the opening of
Texas’ first Miu Miu store
earlier this year as the celebrity DJ. It was the perfect way
for Miu Miu, the sister brand
to the Italian fashion house
Prada, to open its doors. Miu
Miu appeals to the young,
cool and affluent shopper,
and the store showcases the
brand’s fun and flirty clothing, shoes and accessories.
Fashion and art come together at BB1 Classic.
The two-story boutique features clothes from
around the world as well as designs created in
conjunction with artist John Ross Palmer.
UPTOWN PARK
The best way to start off
a shopping trip at Uptown
Park is with a cupcake from
Crave Cupcakes. No sooner
had I bought my red-velvet
variety, I dropped it on
the floor by accident. An
employee gave me another
without blinking. Here at
Uptown Park, customer
service is a priority at every
turn. This charming retail
area, near Loop 610 and
Woodway, has nearly 40
places to shop, dine and
sip. Store after store, I
found friendly sales staffs
and a variety of clothing
and accessories for every
budget, from Mint Baby,
Basiques, High Gloss and
Lady Elle to M Penner and
Lucho.

When Calli Saitowitz moved
her BB1 Classic boutique

the size of the store and also

The South African-native

Julian, and operates the
store with her sister, Moira
Morris. The two scour the
world searching for musthave lines, such as Louisa
Cerano and Isabel De Pedro.
They’ve also launched a line
of scarves, Moi Moi, made of
tissue-thin silk and cashmere, and have collaborated
with Houston artist John
Ross Palmer to feature his
work on the scarves ($149
each).

Rice Village, which opened in the 1930s, is one
of city’s oldest shopping areas. It’s also one of
the most popular, with blocks of boutiques,
including Hemline, Method, Nine Maternity,

cult following. Lunch hours are limited, and

go wrong with the rustic sandwiches, wellappointed salads or the quiche of the day. It’s
simply charming.

Remember Meyerland Plaza? Perhaps it is time
to make new shopping memories at the Loop 610 mall,
and visit Bellaire stores for something chic
By J OY S E W I N G
MEYERLAND
Meyerland is named for Joseph Meyer,
who bought the land in 1885. Meyerland
Plaza was Houston’s second regional mall
when it was built in the late 1950s. As a native
Houstonian, I remember accompanying
my mother to Meyerland Plaza during the
holidays. We would visit its unique momand-pop stores and the square where Santa
set up shop.
Formal Wear and Jos. A.
Bank Clothiers, as well as
some familiar restaurants.
The plaza’s remodeled and
restyled J.C. Penney is one
of my favorites in Houston
because it’s so easy to find
a parking spot.

Vintage, retro and arty modern fare
and small-town atmosphere draw
visitors into the eclectic shops of 19th Street.
By J OY S E W I N G
No other shopping area in Houston has the sweet allure of 19th
Street in the Heights.
It’s rarely chaotic and has such Main Street, small-town charm
you’ll forget you’re in a sprawling city. The boutiques include the
massive Retroplis, with two floors of vintage apparel, and Thread,
a consignment shop for stylish children’s clothing. Makeup artist
Yubi Escalona has a studio offering glam sessions and lessons.
The annual White Linen Night in the Heights on 19th Street will
be 6-10 p.m. Aug. 4. Shop, sip and browse while celebrating the
Heights’ coolness. Go early; it gets crazy crowded.

19th Street is a treasure
hunt; you’re sure to find
something great. I did when
I visited the 2,500-squarefoot store in search of an
outfit for a disco party.
It also has more ’40s
and ’50s dresses, coats,
blouses and vintage jewelry
than I had time to peruse,
plus pieces from the ’80s
and an assortment of used
cowboy boots, vintage
shoes and handbags. Don’t

Customer service can make

Breakfast is served daily until 3 p.m., so there’s also chicken

still we love it.
