Meeting the Crisis Head-On
JFCS has always prided itself on being able to adapt and respond to the changing needs of our community. For years, we
have added and expanded programs to keep pace with the times. Older programs like Soviet Resettlement give way to newer
ones that address more timely topics such as addictions, domestic and teen dating abuse, and the difficult economy.
Once again we are adapting to meet the needs of the community. When it became apparent that the financial crisis was here
to stay, JFCS quickly launched its Family Assistance Program (FAP) in response, in order to help families who are struggling
to pay their bills, keep their jobs, and put food on the table. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive array of tools and
resources to help people attain financial literacy and achieve economic self-sufficiency. This program is made possible with
the assistance of a generous grant from the Samson Family, and we are very grateful for their support.
We recognize that this is a very difficult time for many people, and are proud to be able to bring such a comprehensive and
much needed program to the community. You can read all about the program inside this annual report and on our website,
so we won’t go into the details here. Suffice to say that the FAP helps struggling community members to regain economic
stability by providing counseling, support, workshops, case management, vocational services, access to community services and
government entitlements, food and emergency cash assistance when needed, and other supports.
There’s an old adage that says: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
No matter how hard times become, individuals and families want and need to be economically self sufficient.
The goal of the FAP is consistent with the goals of JFCS in general… to give people the tools and the motivation to become
independent and live a life of meaning and dignity. The Family Assistance Program was born out of a need that arose from
the troubled times we are currently experiencing. This is how most of our programs come about. We see a need and we meet it.

24: A Day in the Life of Samost JFCS
8:00 am:
The day starts early at JFCS. Mary, a home health aide, arrives at the door of a Senior Services client. 86-year old
Bess is confined to her home because of an amputated leg and a variety of other age-related problems. Her home health aide, Mary,
is absolutely essential to her life. Mary helps her to bathe, dress and even to eat. In a few hours, JFCS nurse Judi looks in on Bess
to make sure she’s taking her medicines correctly and that her vital signs are normal. Her blood pressure is quite high, so Judi will
contact Bess’ doctor to see if a change in medication is needed.
9:00 am:
Jill, a young adult with special needs who has been coached and trained through the JFCS Developmental
Disabilities Vocational Services Program, leaves for her shift at her new job in the kitchen at the Politz Day School. Jill is a hard
worker and she adores her new job, because it combines her love for Judaism with her desire to serve the Jewish community.
Since starting her new job, Jill is like a new person.
10:00 am:
JFCS volunteer, Marvin, knocks on Leo’s door. Leo can’t get out to grocery shop or cook for himself, so he relies heavily on
Marvin, who delivers a week’s worth of home-cooked nutritious kosher meals on wheels to his door every Monday. Leo eagerly looks
forward to seeing Marvin’s smiling face, along with the food he brings. His family lives across the country and can only communicate
with him by phone, so he is alone most of the time. Marvin spends a few minutes chatting with Leo, and conversation with people
from the outside world is something Leo just cannot get enough of. With Marvin’s help, he can continue to live in the home he loves so much.
11:00 am:
Diane, a young mother who lived for years in an abusive relationship with her husband, will cry for awhile in the safety
of her therapist’s office. For far too many years she allowed her husband and the father of her two children to verbally and even occasionally
physically abuse her. Through JFCS Domestic Abuse services, she will receive comfort and support, then walk out holding her head
high…with a new sense of self confidence and the tools to begin the process of building a new life for herself and her family.
11:30 am:
Down the hall, Marty arrives for his weekly Widow and Widower Support Group meeting. His face, once lined
with the pain and anguish he experienced after the death of his wife of 60 years, is relaxed and smiling because he now looks
forward to each day and enjoys the sense of camaraderie he has with his fellow group members. Right after the session he’s meeting
a widow from the group for lunch.
12:00 Pm:
The troubled economy is affecting many people, and Dawn and Michael are meeting with their social worker to
discuss how they will be able to continue to afford to pay their mortgage, put food on the table, and buy holiday gifts for their
children. Their social worker is able to offer them support through the JFCS Family Assistance Program. They will receive gift
cards for their children’s holiday gifts, food and scrip from the food pantry, and some case management assistance. Michael plans to
attend an upcoming mortgage 9-1-1 seminar offered through the FAP to help him modify his mortgage terms, and he is also
joining a JFCS Back to Work support group to learn how to network and apply for a better job.
1:00 Pm:
Eleanor is ushered into the JFCS Food Pantry by JFCS Volunteer, Andi, to select some food to take home. Eleanor’s
husband has been unemployed for the past year and Eleanor has been caring for their 8-year old daughter who has had two surgeries
to attempt to correct a heart valve problem. Money has been extremely tight, and they eat a lot of pasta and pancakes for dinner
in order to have enough left over to pay their heating bills. Eleanor leaves with several large bags of nutritious food, secure in the
knowledge that her family will eat well for several weeks.
1:30 Pm:
Sylvia, who is a participant in the NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) Program at Towers of
Windsor Park, is having a great time learning new moves in her Tai Chi class, which helps to keep her fit and healthy.
2:00 Pm:
Shelly and her 5-year old daughter, Rebecca, meet with their child and adolescent counselor who is helping them find
ways to deal Rebecca’s depression, which set in after her mother and father divorced. With the help of play therapy, Rebecca is
beginning to open up and communicate her fears and anxieties. A rare smile lights on Rebecca’s face and it looks as though she is
making progress.
3:00 Pm:
Matt, a teenage volunteer, meets with several elderly clients at Lions Gate to teach them how to play Nintendo Wii
video games through the JFCS Wii Fitness Program. This technology helps to improve age related impaired memory skills and
balance and coordination. Irv and Sylvia both suffer from mild dementia, and Sylvia uses a walker. Sylvia bowls a “virtual strike”
with her hand-held remote “bowling ball” and she squeals with delight. Irv is quieter about his tennis score, but he is clearly very
pleased with himself. Neither has enjoyed this much physical activity and fun in months.
4:00 Pm:
David and Rochelle, who have struggled for years with infertility, meet with the JFCS Open Arms Adoption
Network Coordinator to discuss the possibility of adoption. They have many questions, and are nervous and excited about the
whole prospect. Their counselor provides them with a list of resources and things to consider as they begin the process. As they
prepare to leave, Rochelle dissolves into tears of happiness at the prospect of having her dreams of motherhood finally come true.
5:00 Pm:
Sharon, who has recently been diagnosed breast cancer, meets with her matched volunteer breast cancer survivor
from the Yad b’ Yad Program to discuss her fears and concerns for the future. They have a cup of tea and a nice, long one-on-one
conversation, during which the volunteer provides emotional support and a complete list of resources to help her partner get on her
feet. Sharon is overwhelmed with the compassion and caring shown by her new friend.
6:00 Pm:
Adam, a client of the JFCS SAIL Program, (Supports to Achieve Independent Living) leaves his home to join some
new friends to share a pizza and a night of bowling. An hour later, Jon, a member of the Special Olympics SAIL basketball team,
leaves for practice. Both young men used to spend their evenings alone in their rooms watching television.
7:30 Pm:
Walter shows up for a Back to Work Employment Support Group. He hasn’t had much success getting a job
because he lacks interviewing and resume-writing skills. A job specialist will assist him, and a social worker will help him to deal
with his feelings of anxiety and inadequacy.
8:00 Pm:
Ellen, a participant at the Cancer Program evening roundtable panel discussion on ovarian cancer and women at high
risk, has her compelling question answered by one of the leading specialists on the panel. The answer is knowledgeable, thorough
and compassionate. When Ellen asked it, she felt frightened and desperate. At the end of the meeting, she meets an acquaintance
who is going through a similar experience. Ellen goes home feeling reassured and not nearly so alone.
It’s been a full and busy day at JFCS, but not an unusual one. Lives have been touched, hope has shown its face, and the future
looks filled with brighter possibilities. That’s how it is at JFCS. It’s a place where a caring word, a touch, and sometimes just a
hug can make all the difference.
….Tomorrow will start another new and promising day.
Taking the First Step…
Counseling Program: Strengthening Individuals,
Children, Families, and Community
Samost JFCS counseling and support services strengthen and enrich the lives of individuals, couples, families, children,
seniors, individuals with special needs, and other community members. Our caring and skilled professionals assist clients
at every stage of life with a wide range of issues that include separation and divorce, bereavement, depression, disability,
anxiety, addictions, and chronic mental illness. The addition of a psychiatrist to our staff enables us to provide psychiatric
evaluations and medication management. A variety of support groups and community conferences offer coping strategies
that help prevent smaller problems from becoming larger. Individual, couple and family therapy services are available at
convenient times at affordable fees. Sliding scale fees are available based on income, and many insurances are accepted.

Their Future is in our Hands…
Child and Adolescent Program
The JFCS Child and Adolescent Program provides children and adolescents, ages 2 to 18, with support and coping skills
to help them achieve emotional health and reach their maximum potential. Play therapy with toys provides opportunities
for younger children, who often are unable to communicate verbally, to express their feelings. Community outreach
programming is available for parents, teachers and children at area schools, synagogues, pre-schools and other groups
on a variety of topics, including depression, suicide, behavior problems, bullying, eating and sleep disorders, and more.
The Child and Adolescent Program receives generous funding from a grant from the Raymond and Gertrude R.
Saltzman Foundation.
Support Groups and Speakers Bureau
JFCS provides a variety of short-term support groups and community conferences to assist individuals who are going
through transitions or stressful times to help them deal with problems that may arise. Group facilitators provide support
and coping skills to help group members deal with special challenges, and also encourage the sharing of experiences and
feelings. Information about topics and schedules is available on the Federation community calendar and the JFCS
website. Speakers are also available to speak to community groups about a variety of topics.
Domestic Abuse
Project SARAH (Stop Abusive Relationships at Home) raises
awareness about domestic abuse and provides counseling to
ensure a safe environment for individuals and families. Volunteers
help to distribute information about the program throughout
the community. An outreach program, Building Healthy
Relationships, is presented to students at area synagogue
schools and public schools.
From Generation to Generation/L ’dor Vador…
Senior Services
The primary focus of the JFCS Senior Services Program is to keep aging members of our community active, healthy, and
self sufficient. Seniors face a variety of physical and emotional challenges, and our program provides a variety of affordable
services to help them live with dignity and independence in their own homes. Services include case management and
assessment, personal care, companion and home health care, housekeeping, Kosher Meals on Wheels, transportation,
blood pressure and medications monitoring by a registered nurse, resource consultations for adult children, support groups,
monitoring services for out-of-town family members, and volunteer friendly visitor services. In addition, JFCS has
embraced new technologies such as the NintendoWii, and incorporated it into an intergenerational Wii Fitness Program
to keep seniors physically active, stimulated and engaged in life. A generous grant from the Samost Family has enabled
JFCS to distribute over 135 Wii’s to very diverse populations of all denominations, which include: synagogues, churches,
nursing homes and rehab centers, active adult communities, Federation housing facilities and the JCC, Lions Gate,
schools, senior housing facilities, adult day care centers, assisted living facilities, and community centers.
Senior Services also include:
SENIOR CHAI: Provides all of the services above to Jewish seniors, and is partially funded by the Raymond and Gertrude R. Saltzman
Foundation. Certain services are available at a reduced cost, thanks to a grant from the Raymond and Gertrude R. Saltzman Foundation.
NORC: Naturally Occurring Retirement Community, was established at the Towers of Windsor Park in Cherry Hill. NORC is defined
as an apartment complex or a neighborhood where many residents are age 60 and older and have lived there for a long period of time. The
JFCS NORC provides social, medical and recreational services to allow residents to age in place in their own homes.
CAFÉ EUROPA: Holocaust Survivors have the opportunity to connect with other survivors and enjoy recreational and social activities
at monthly luncheons.
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR ASSISTANCE: Provides counseling and assistance filling out claims forms for various entitlements
available to Holocaust survivors, as well as additional subsidies for Senior Chai services.
JEWISH HOSPICE: Enhances traditional Hospice care with an emphasis on Jewish perspectives and traditions. Volunteers bring
the warmth of Shabbat to homebound Hospice patients by bringing them challahs, candles and other traditional items.
BEREAVEMENT GROUPS: Groups such as Widows and Widowers and New Beginnings provide grief and bereavement support, as well
as opportunities for socialization for those who have lost a spouse. A new group, Duets, is now available for widow and widower couples to
explore issues such as the reaction of friends and family, fear of commitment or of suffering another loss; sexual concerns, and others.
Focusing on Ability instead of Disability…
JFCS Developmental Disabilities Program
The Developmental Disabilities program of Jewish Family and Children’s Service helps individuals who have
developmental disabilities to lead independent and productive lives. The focus is on providing a full complement
of services to enable clients to function at their highest potential and to enhance the quality of their lives. Services
include: case management, supported employment, support groups, cash option respite care, life skills training,
social programming, shared holiday celebrations, and educational programs.
Other Services include:
SPECIAL EVENTS: Conferences, resource fairs, and other programs offer experts, workshops and community resource information for
individuals with special needs and their caretakers. In addition, holiday celebrations are open to the community throughout the year.
GROUPS: Sibshop groups provide brothers and sisters of individuals who have developmental disabilities opportunities to share common
joys and concerns in a relaxed recreational setting.
RESPITE SERVICES: A Cash Option Respite Program is available for eligible families who have a child with special needs
living at home, through the Family Support Program of the Division of Developmental Disabilities.
THE SAIL PROGRAM: The SAIL (Supports to Achieve Independent Living) Program offers a variety of support and
services for individuals who are living on their own or preparing to live on their own in the community. These include:
social, recreational, life skills, housing, athletics, Birthright trip to Israel, and other services.
SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT: A vocational coordinator and a team of job coaches help individuals with
special needs obtain and maintain competitive employment. Samost JFCS is an approved Supported
Employment Vendor through the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services,
which enables Samost JFCS to offer numerous job support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. JFCS also contracts with local school districts to offer transition services.
SUCCESS OF SAVINGS (SOS): An interactive program in partnership with a community
bank helps young adults with special needs achieve financial literacy and provides incentives
for savings.
Answering the Call When and Where Help is Needed..
Volunteer Program
The Volunteer Program of Jewish Family and Children’s Service consists of a team of over 130 volunteers who range in
age from teenagers to senior citizens. They enrich the lives of our clients, as well as their own lives, through a wide range
of volunteer opportunities, which include:
FRIENDLY VISITORS: Volunteers bring friendship and companionship to seniors and homebound adults, through
home visits and phone calls to those who are isolated from the outside world.
KOSHER MEALS ON WHEELS: Volunteers deliver kosher meals on a weekly basis to homebound or convalescing
older adults who need some extra assistance.
TRANSPORTATION: Volunteers provide transportation to medical or other appointments and
help individuals unable to get around on their own to maintain an independent lifestyle.
SHABBAT SHALOM VISITORS: Volunteers bring the warmth and spirit of Shabbat and the joy
of Jewish holiday celebrations to residents in nursing homes by visiting and conducting services.
TEACHER'S HELPER: Volunteers serve as an extra set of hands in the pre-school classrooms
at the Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Center at the Katz JCC. Volunteers, many of whom are
teens, help with various tasks depending upon the needs of the teacher in each classroom.
NINTENDO WII FITNESS PROGRAM: An intergenerational program pairs seniors with
teens, who teach the elderly how to use the Nintendo Wii, which helps improve memory,
coordination, balance and flexibility. A generous grant from the Samost Family has enabled
JFCS to provide Nintendo Wii's for seniors at numerous facilities throughout the tri-county
area, including Federation senior housing, Lions Gate, NORC, and other retirement
communities and senior facilities.

JEWISH HOSPICE: Through a partnership between Samost JFCS and Samaritan Hospice, volunteers bring the comfort
of Jewish traditions through visits with seriously ill patients, often providing respite care for family members. Volunteers also
enhance their lives by bringing them challahs, candles, and other traditional items to celebrate Shabbat.
DOMESTIC ABUSE (PROJECT SARAH): Volunteers help with outreach by distributing educational materials to
various organizations throughout the tri-county area. They also serve as speakers about domestic abuse issues at local
synagogues and organizations.
SPECIAL NEEDS ACTIVITIES: Volunteers serve as coaches and assistant coaches for the SAIL Recreation
Program, as well as economic coaches for the monthly Success of Savings (SOS) program that teaches young adults
with special needs how to manage their money.
Food Pantry
The Food Pantry, staffed and operated through the
Volunteer Program, collects food and personal care items,
gift cards, and scrip to distribute to individuals and families
in need throughout the community. The food pantry
provides much needed assistance to community members
who are struggling to make ends meet in this difficult
economy. Donations from synagogues, organizations, JCC
camps, the Ravitz Family Foundation and other charitable
organizations, as well as from families celebrating simchas
with edible centerpieces help keep it well stocked.
Volunteers and board members also help prepare and
deliver food to homebound seniors and other community
members at Thanksgiving and Jewish holidays.
When the Going Gets Tough, Yad b’Yad is There…
Yad b'Yad
Yad b'Yad (Hand in Hand) is a community of individuals empowering one another in the fight against breast cancer.
The program provides mentor support between volunteer breast cancer survivors and new patients, support groups, a
resource guide, educational seminars, volunteer assistance, and other assistance for diagnosed breast cancer patients.
The greatest gift of all is the support a survivor can offer new patients by actively listening to and validating their experiences.
The program is a partnership between JFCS and the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure,
and receives funding from Komen. Yad b’Yad sponsors periodic free workshops and seminars on a variety of topics,
including spirituality and healing, comprehensive approach to wellness, prevention strategies, and others. Podcasts of
many of these seminars are featured on the JFCS website. In addition, Kimmie Cares dolls, which come with removable
wigs and a special book, are available free to any child who has a mother diagnosed with breast cancer to help explain
what is happening. The Cancer Connection is another program that provides resources and support to individuals and
families who are dealing with a diagnosis of other types of cancer.
Meeting a Crisis Head-On...
Family Assistance Program
The needs facing our clients don’t stop at mental health. The recent dramatic downturn in the nation’s economy has had
devastating effects on the entire Southern New Jersey community. Requests for assistance to pay for medications and
utility bills, for food, and for financial assistance increase daily. Our food pantry has benefitted from generous donations
but requests for food are up almost 300% from last year to this year. The Family Assistance Program was created to
respond to a real need in the community. Its mission is to provide a comprehensive program for community members
who are struggling to make ends meet during the current economic climate, and to provide the tools and resources
needed to gain financial literacy and achieve economic self-sufficiency. These include financial
literacy, counseling support, crisis intervention, and case management services. Periodic free
community workshops are offered on topics such budgeting, debt and expense reduction,
credit, banking, mortgages, and other financial issues.

Building Families Through Adoption Network...
Open Arms Adoption Network
JFCS is a partner with the Open Arms Adoption Network (Open Arms), a program of JFCS of Greater Philadelphia.
Licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Open Arms has been providing adoption services and counseling since 1855,
and is dedicated to facilitating child-centered domestic open adoptions in which birth and adoptive families create healthy
lifelong relationships. Open Arms will help coordinate international adoptions as well by conducting the Home Study
and Post Placement visits and preparing those reports. Through this new partnership, JFCS adoption services can
provide a full range of services, from counseling birth mothers to placement of babies with their new families.

Thank you for your gift of Passover goodies. This is the second

Not being able to drive any more and living in a non-Jewish

Did You Know?
• We offer approximately 35 services and programs
and serve 7,500 people.
• We provided 5,700 counseling sessions in 2008.
We now have a psychiatrist on staff.
• We gave away almost three times as much food
from our Food Pantry in 2008 as we did in 2007.
• We have received over 2,500 hits on our website
podcasts and I-Tunes.
• Requests for housing increased 150% since last year
in just a 2 month period. We had 24 total requests
last year and 10 requests just in the period from
October to December, 2008.
• Open Arms Adoption Network, our partnership with
JFCS of Greater Philadelphia, opened its doors Oct 1,
2008 providing a full range of services from counseling
birth mothers to placing babies with families.
• We served 1,500 seniors and delivered 11,000
Kosher Meals on Wheels in 2008.
• Our Volunteer Program currently has 152 volunteers
with 13 available volunteer opportunities.
• Kosher Meals on Wheels is our fastest growing
program on an annual basis. KMOW deliveries are
up over 20% from last year at this time. Meals are
now available for purchase to the entire community,
and gift cards are available.
• Since its inception in 2006, over 2,500 area teens
have participated in our Building Healthy
Relationships Program. We initiated a program
in the Camden Schools in December 2008.
• Our Food Pantry feeds approximately 150
people per month.
• Professional social work/nursing visits are up
30% over last year.
• Homecare services increased 25% over last year.
• As the economy declined, we saw a 33% increase in
vocational needs from last year to this year. There was a
50% increase in case management requests from last
year to this year. There was a 23% increase in requests for
financial assistance from October 2007 to October 2008.
• Our SAIL Vocational Program currently has 40
employers and 47 employed clients.
• We are the only Federation agency to have a
presence in Burlington County.
• We have distributed over 135 Nintendo Wii’s to
senior facilities in Camden, Burlington and Gloucester
counties. Some facilities have created leagues with
tee-shirts and friendly competitions.
• Since its inception, the Yad B’ Yad Program has
touched 2,300 lives.
