It is also good to reminisce to decide what one could do differently or better.
As u die Libretto lees sal u
Our students achieved excellent results. There were category winners and finalists at
competitions, roll of honour examination candidates and exceptional performances among
all the achievements. The students are usually unaware of what they are capable of and many
achievements are often made possible through the dedication, enthusiasm and hard work of
the teachers. Their input with the co-operation and support of parents make the activities at the
Music Centre worthwhile.

‘n Paar hoogtepunte was die Concertofees wat soos elke vorige jaar ‘n aand was om te onthou.
Die Kerskonsert in samewerking met die Suidoosterfees en 3 soprane was ‘n eerste en ‘n
ongelooflike ondervinding vir elke student.

Stellenbosch International
Chamber Music Festival 2014
The 11th Chamber Music Festival took place from 4-13 July. The Festival Symphony
Orchestra was conducted by Daniel Raiskin and the Festival Concert Orchestra by
Daniel Boico.
Two past pupils, Cherilee Adams and Dylan Tabisher played in the opening concert
and two of the centre’s part time teachers, Annien Shaw (violin) and Emile de Roubaix
(viola) were part of the faculty members of the festival. Our very own Mr Burden was
one of the guest conductors. He conducted the Orchestral Suite in b min by JS Bach.
The centre pupils who participated in the festival, were from the brass department:
Charlton Scheepers (trombone) and Chanson Hoffman (trumpet) who both received
full bursaries to attend the festival, played in the Festival Concert Orchestra. From the
woodwind department:Michaela Alexander (saxophone), Tarren Pedro (bassoon) and
Andrea Salomo (oboe) played in the Festival Concert Orchestra, and Caron Tremble
(bassoon), played in the Festival Symphony Orchestra. Caron, Tarren and Andrea
received full bursaries to attend. From the string department: Zoë Adonis (violin)
received a full bursary and played in the Festival Concert Orchestra as did Nastassja
Pretorius (cello).
The fact that so many students prefer to spend their holiday attending the Chamber
Music Festival speaks volumes!
WCED Prestige Concert
The first ever WCED Prestige Concert was held in the Hugo
Lambrechts Auditorium on Sunday 12 October 2014. This
concert, funded by the music division of the Western Cape
Education Department, was intended to spotlight the cream
of the crop of highly talented Grade 12 music learners from
the Western Cape. Learners from as far away as Robertson
and Oudsthoorn were soloists on the evening.
Twelve soloists all performed movements of various concerti
accompanied by a professional orchestra and conducted
by Hugo Lambrechts’ very own, Mr Liam Burden. The
following three learners from the Hugo Lambrechts Music
Centre were soloists: Michaela Alexander (Soprano
Saxophone), performing the 2nd and 3rd movements from
B. Marcello’s Concerto in C minor for oboe, and Caron
Tremble and Tarren Pedro (both on Bassoon) who performed
the second movement from Allan Stephenson’s Concertino
for Two Bassoons.
Congratulations to all who took part and especially the Hugo
Lambrechts students who performed at an exceptionally high
level! We are very proud of your achievements!

Simfonie-orkes kamp
With great anticipation we all made our way to the camp site in
Melkbos with absolutely no idea what the weekend would have in
store for us. We hoped that it would be a memorable one and indeed
it was.
oefennaweek by Melkbos Kultuursentrum gehad. Dit was ter
voorbereidng van die Concerto fees.
Yes, we came to work hard and we did; it felt as if the rehearsals would
never end, but somehow we all found time to make unforgettable
memories. Oh yeah, and we all left with a little bit of so called “extra
baggage” due to the most amazing food made with love, not to
mention the countless chocolate bars calling our names every time
we walked by.
geborg!
At the end of the camp we had accomplished quite a lot. All our hard
work paid off when everything came together the night of the annual
Concerto Festival. It just shows what happens when musicians with
great talent and determination come together and the music gets
expressed in ways you cannot explain. - Jamie Barron
betrokke was!

performance. Congratulations to the two soloists and also the rest of
the orchestra on a brilliant performance. We all felt proud to be part of
the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre. Congratulations must also go to
Ms Vorster for the extra time she has spent rehearsing with the Senior
Strings. Well done!
On Sunday 3 August this year the concert, Three of the Best, was
held at Artscape Theatre. The programme was shared by CPYO, HL
Senior Strings and Beau Soleil Senior String Ensemble.
This is what Ms Vorster has to say:
“It was an evening to remember and a concert that Hugo Lambrechts’
students and teachers can be proud of! The Senior Strings always aim
for a refined performance with attention given to the detail, style,
musical expression and technique required for each performed piece.
We also work towards a professional standard and the performance
in “Three of the Best” was one of the Senior Strings most successful
ones, exposing the Music Centre to a wider audience.
As part of the CPYO programme, ex-pupil Jeffrey Armstrong
performed the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.
The CPYO also gave a lively performance of Verdi’s Ouverture“La
Forza del Destino”and the finale of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
Beau Soleil Senior Strings’ enjoyable performance of Elgar’s first
movement from Serenade for Strings, Massenet’s Meditation and
Bach’s first movement of the Double Concerto concluded the Sunday
concert.
I want to thank each and every member of the Senior Strings for their
enthusiastic dedication and hard work, and for the team spirit during
all the rehearsals. Time spent with you is always very enjoyable and
rewarding! Thank you to all the parents for their constant support!
Without it we could not have done it. A big thank you to Kaylen
Lewis, Jeffrey Armstrong and Giselle Pretorius for joining us again
and well done to the soloists Tamryn Barron and Danielle Salies and
their teacher Ms Bogenhagen!”
After the interval, our Senior Strings were on stage with a lively
performance of all three movements of Vivaldi’s L’Estro Armonico
Concerto no 8. Tamryn Barron and Danielle Salies were the soloists.
The Frolicsome Finale from Britten’s Simple Symphony was played
with precision and with all eyes on the conductor aiming for a perfect

SACS National Music
Competition
Pieter Kooij Music
Competition
In August this year, eight students from the Centre participated in
the 2nd SACS National Music Competition. They were Michaela
Alexander (Saxophone), Josh Southgate (Flute), Liam Slabbert
(Bassoon), Sinead Slabbert (Violin), Tarren Pedro (Bassoon),
Andrea Salomo (Oboe), Kean Loubser (Violin) and Emilio February
(Percussion).
The final round of the Pieter Kooij Music Competition was held on 30
August this year in the beautiful Welgemeend house which is part of
Jan Van Riebeeck High School. The adjudicators this year were Prof.
Hubert van der Spuy, Mr Pieter Kooij and Anna-Marie Swanepoel.
Although Pieter Kooij is a pianist, the competition allows school
students to compete on any instrument.
Andrea went through to the second round and Emilio was the
category winner of the category 15-16 years. Well done, Emilio!
Four of the five Hugo Lambrechts’ students who entered, played in the
final round. Emilio February (percussion), Caron Tremble (bassoon),
Nastassja Pretorius (cello), and Danielle Rossouw (clarinet) made us
proud. The winners were pianists, Rhiyaan Smith (first prize) and
Adam Gild (second prize).
Here is some feedback from some of the participants:
Ek het hierdie jaar vir die eerste keer aan die SACS Nasionale
Musiekkompetisie deelgeneem. Dit was harde werk met al die
voorbereiding en ekstra lesse. Ek was baie op my senuwees toe ek
probeer! - Sinead Slabbert
I recently took part in the SACS Competition. When they told me I
was going through to the 2nd round, I was stoked! I did not expect
it because the other candidates were so talented. That actually
motivated me to practise harder and do better next year. I can’t wait
for the next adventures which are, of course, more competitions!
- Josh Southgate
The SACS Competition was an extremely enjoyable event. Not only
does it present the opportunity for young musicians to participate
in a competition but also gives them the chance to experience the
growing world of Classical music.
Hugo Lambrechts
Conductors Workshop #2
My experience of the SACS Competition was a good one: I had the
chance to perform a new programme of challenging yet pleasant
works in front of an audience of eager listeners. One must be very
careful with the choice of programme. One piece in the wrong place
can spoil the entire programme. The works must be balanced. The
programme also needs to reflect the skills of the performer as well as
the performer’s musicality.
The follow-up of the highly successful first Conductors’ Workshop
held in March this year, took place from 16 – 19 October. It was
presented once again by the Dutch conductor, Maestro Arjan Tien.
The aim of this round of workshops was to give more advanced
conductors the opportunity to have intense one on one sessions with
Maestro Tien. They were accompanied by two pianos (thank you Mr
Goodall for agreeing to be part of the piano team). The following
works were prepared for the course: Symphony No. 9 by A. Dvorak,
Symphony No. 29 by W.A Mozart, and the aria Ah! Non creda mirarti
from the opera La Sonnambula by V. Bellini. Leah Gunther, a student
from the UCT Opera School, graciously accepted the request to
perform the aria during one of the classes. The Cape Town based
baroque orchestra, Camerata Tinta Barroca, also agreed to be part of
the course and offered their services as a vehicle on which the young
conductors could apply what they had learned during the course.
The SACS National Music Competition was a great experience and I
look forward doing it again next year. - Emilio February
Three conductors from Cape Town applied to actively take part in
the course: Chad Hendricks (UCT), Clark Schilder (New Apostolic
Church), and Liam Burden (Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre). There
were also a number of people, including staff from Hugo Lambrechts,
who came to sit in on the workshops, which took the form of open
master classes.
Four intensive sessions, all of which were recorded, were spread
over three days. Analysis of the videos taken during the days’ classes
provided valuable material from which the participants were able to
work on honing the skills and refining their gestures. Maestro Tien
chose two of the participants, Liam Burden and Chad Hendricks, to
conduct Camerata Tinta Barroca on the final day of classes. Liam
conducted the second movement and Chad the third of the Mozart
symphony. This opportunity gave the participants the chance to apply
what they had learned over the last three, days with an orchestra.
The Hugo Lambrechts Conductors’ Workshop #2 was concluded by
an awe-inspiring concert with Camerata Tinta Barroca and Maestro
Arjan Tien at the helm.
A huge thank you to all who made this invaluable course a reality,
especially Maestro Tien!

Johann Vos Piano
Competition
The Johann Vos Piano celebrated its 24th year. The finals took place
on 3 September and the event was well attended. This competiton
comprises three sections, with winners for each.
Anna Grieve won the Piccolo section for grade 6 and 7 learners,
with Jiyoon Jeon coming second. In the Junior section, Annerike
du Plessis came out tops with second place going to Lorena Marais.
Rhiyaan Smith received first prize in the Senior section, and Adam
Gild was placed second. Competitors in this competition reflect the
high standard piano teaching in the Western Cape and we anticipate
its 25th year to be an extraordinary event.
Piano Department concert
The Piano Concert took place on the 21st October at 19h00 in the
auditorium. 25 excited pianists, from very young to more mature,
performed, and everyone played confidently. What makes this event
special is that all the parents and grandparents come to listen, and this
builds a sense of pride in the young performers.
The piano staff are extremely proud of each student that played.

Concerto Festival 2014
On Sunday 31 August, 16 promising musicians took the stage at the
annual Hugo Lambrechts Concerto Festival. This event is definitely a
highlight on the Hugo Lambrechts calendar and this year it exceeded
all expectations. The symphony orchestra set the tone for the evening
when they walked on stage dressed in their elegant black evening
wear. The soloists also looked glamorous and totally ‘wowed’ the
audience with their extraordinary performances.
This year the concert featured a variety of repertoire ranging from
the baroque era to more modern works. The participants were AhYoung Moon (11, Piano, Rhenish), Jaden Willie (13, Violin, Forres), Michaela Alexander (18, Saxophone, Settlers), Danielle Kwonglee
(16, Violin, De Kuilen), Cheslyn Joseph (18, Clarinet, Northlink), Tamryn Barron (16, Violin, Rhenish), Arjen van Renssen (14, Cello,

The soloists were accompanied by the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony
Orchestra conducted by Liam Burden. This year a greater number of
Centre students participated in the orchestra. The Hugo Lambrechts
Music Centre is grateful to the sponsors of the event: Die Burger, the
Rupert Music Foundation, FMR and Distell. Ms D Schäfer, minister
of education also attended the concert.Thank you to everyone who

Camerata Tinta Barocca
10th Anniversary Gala
Concert at the Auditorium
Bach’s sons, Johann Christian and W. A. Mozart’s Piano Concerto
#14 and Symphony #29.
The amazing conducting of Arjan Tien “extracted” the best from
each and every musician on stage. The orchestra looked and sounded
as one body moving in different directions, conveying the beautifully
written music in the finest way. It was a fiesta of emotions, dynamics
and articulations which were even more enhanced by the beautiful
acoustics of the auditorium. In between the pieces, the talented
speaker Rodney Trudgeon kept the audience engaged with many
interesting facts related to the programme.
On 19 October, Hugo Lambrechts’ audience was treated with an
extraordinary concert. It was the Cape Town based Baroque ensemble
Camerata Tinta Barocca who was celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The ensemble, founded by the violinist Quentin Crida, is a
small chamber orchestra consisting mainly of string players and
a harpsichord. The members of the orchestra include some of
Cape Town’s finest musicians. The group performs music almost
exclusively from the Baroque era. Sometimes the repertoire stretches
to music from the Classical period with additional woodwind
instruments. The concerts of Camerata Tinta Barocca have met with
critical acclaim in the Cape Times and Die Burger and have been
broadcast on Fine Music Radio.
Two of our full time teachers, Ms Valentina Vorster (violin) and
Ms Carin Bam (oboe) and one of our part time teachers, Emille de
Roubeaux(viola) formed part of the orchestra.
In between the rehearsals, maestro Arjan Tien gave conducting
masterclasses at the Centre. Two of the students in the conducting
classes were chosen to conduct Camerata Tinta Barocca a few
hours before their performance in the auditorium. They were Chad
Hendricks and our own HLSO conductor Mr Liam Burden. It was a
wonderful opportunity and a very inspiring experience!
To add up the already exciting combination of musicians, the wellknown Dutch conductor Arjan Tien, the South African virtuoso
pianist Francois du Toit and the radio presenter Rodney Trudgeon
were invited to join in the 10th Year Anniversary concerts. The first
two concerts were performed in Simonstown Methodist Church and
the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Cape Town. The last one
took place in our beautiful auditorium. The programme for the gala
concerts included Sinfonia in D Major by one of Johann Sebastian
Unfortunately, despite the good advertising of the concert and the
reduced ticket prices for Centre students and parents, we did not see
many in the audience. We would really like to encourage our parents
and students to attend concerts, performed by professional musicians.
There is no better lesson and inspiration than a good live concert!
To those who were there, we are proud of you!

Reunion Island Concert
“The Concertina orchestra from Reunion Island was amazing! It was
good to experience a completely different style of music, instruments
and type of orchestra.
At Hugo Lambrechts we are lucky enough to have visiting musicians,
groups and orchestras not only from this country, but also from
abroad. On 23 October we had a rather extraordinary event-A visiting
orchestra from Reunion Island! It was truly a cultural and musical
exchange.
The orchestra’s main instrument was the accordion. They had
11 accordions in the orchestra. We enjoyed their choice of pieces.
They played many popular pieces like the theme song from Mission
Impossible, the Lion Sleeps Tonight and some French music from
their Island. It was very inspiring to see an orchestra of children,
between the ages of 7 and 17, playing together. We really enjoyed it
very much. Hope they come again soon... or maybe we could go to
them!”- Bjorn Lawson & Kean Loubser
In the first half, the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra, under the
baton of Mr Burden performed a programme featuring HL students
as soloists: Laura Bailie (piano), Liam Slabbert (bassoon), a duo with
Carla Britz (flute) and Lisa Britz (harp) and then Alyssa Arendse
(violin), who is a student from the Rosendal Development Project.
The programme was varied and all the students played very well.
The vibrant HLSO ended the first half with J. Brahms’s Hungarian
Dance No.5.
“First of all, I want to say thank you for selecting me to play at this
concert! It was an honour to play with such professional people. I was
scared at first, but then I became one with the music! I enjoyed every
second of it. Vivaldi is one of my favourite composers and it was very
exciting to play with strings, as the Concerto was originally written
for Bassoon and String Orchestra. I hope to get a similar chance
again, someday. The audience was brilliant! The applause made my
heart feel warm!” - Liam Slabbert (Soloist)
The second half continued with the Concertina Orchestra’s
performance of light music. Their programme also included a solo
piece played by the young South African accordionist Peter Anguelov.
It was wonderful for the teachers to see how flexible, reliable
and courageous our young soloists and orchestra players are. At a
busy time, with a lot of activities at the Centre, and little time for
rehearsals, all the students and teachers put their skills and energy
together and turned this concert into a very inspiring and exciting
event. The local audience, the Concertina Orchestra members and
the Hugo Lambrecths Centre students and teachers had a great time!
Congratulations to all soloists, teachers, orchestra members and
conductors!
“This was my first time as a soloist with an orchestra and it was an
exciting experience. At the rehearsal I was slightly apprehensive, but
after the first few bars I felt completely at ease. It was good exposure,
but it was also challenging, because one has to listen to the orchestra
and be in time all the way through. I am very grateful to have this
opportunity and it is definitely something I would like to do again.
The work I performed was the Piano Concerto No. 3, the so called
“Youth Concerto” by Kabalevsky. I would like to express my sincere
thanks to my piano maestro, Mr. Shane Goodall for his enthusiasm
and expert guidance. - Laura Bailie (Soloist)
Here is what some of our students had to say:

In the week of the prestige concert three of the Centre students went for a live interview on BUSH radio. Thank you to Ms Bam who
accompanied them. Here is what one of the students had to say about the interview:
It was my first time speaking on Live radio, so it was a bit stressful. But as soon as I started talking, it was a lot of fun. We talked mostly about
the Prestige Concert. The three of us, Liam, Michael and I, each played a short piece. We were talking and playing for half an hour even though
it felt like five minutes.I t was an amazing experience and I would love to do it again. - Björn Lawson

Strings Beginner Concert
2014
The theme for this year’s Strings Beginner Concert was Disney’s
movie Frozen and the students and teachers dressed according to their
favourite characters from the film.
The stage was packed with excited students, ready for their first
concert performance. The castle and carriage backdrop set the scene.
As the students walked on stage, the teachers performed “For the First
Time in Forever” from the movie. Students either played solos or in
groups and the concert was brought to a close with a performance by
the Beginner String Orchestra conducted by Ms Bogenhagen. The
orchestra was joined by everyone on stage for the mass item where
the beginners played along to “For the First Time in Forever”.
Students stayed for the group photo and parents were invited to gather
around to take snapshots. Each performer felt like a star with the
enthusiastic audience members’ camera lights flashing in their eyes.
The party held afterwards in the string quad was a huge success. The
tables overflowed with snacks and the highlight was when the violin
cake was cut. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Antonie for the beautiful cake.
Congratulations to all our students that took part in this exciting
event. You make us all proud!
Brass Departmental Concert
The Brass Departmental Concert took place on Tuesday 2 December.
The concert took the form of an ensemble concert, as the students
were divided into small groups. The majority of the brass students
participated in this event.
Some of the highlights included a sextet French Horn Ensemble that
performed the theme song from Titanic as well as Ding Dong Merrily
on High. Clinton Donson, Duwayne de Wet and Jaydon Martin
performed Prelude to Te Deum.
The concert finished with Vinchenzo Boonzaaier and Mr MacDonald
performing Rondinetto and Six Cents.
It was truly an enjoyable event! Thank you to everyone who donated
gifts to the Tyger Bear Unit!

themselves to the audience. They also spoke about activities at the
Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre.
The V&A Summer Sessions, presented by Mercedes Benz kicked off
on Saturday 4 October with free music concerts every weekend in the
V&A Amphitheatre. On Saturday 18 October the Hugo Lambrechts
Saxophone Quartet shared the stage with the Cape Philharmonic
Youth Orchestra (CPYO) and the Masidlale Quartet. The HL
Quartet presented works that range from transcriptions of a Bach
prelude through to Gershwin preludes and original compositions for
saxophone quartet. We were happy to have had a very good audience who generously
applauded the orchestra. The music, despite being on the more
serious side, brought a very nice atmosphere to the busy Waterfront.
The weather was very kind to us and even the slightest breeze had
calmed down as if anticipating the beautiful music! We hope that we
can do that again in the future. - Ms Vorster
On 7 December the Centre’s Young Strings and the combined group
of Intermediate and Junior Strings entertained the crowd with an
exciting programme ranging from beautiful Christmas music to a
funky Jazz Suite composed by Pamela Wedgwood. It was lovely to
spend a sunny Sunday afternoon, listening to good quality music!
Here is what one of the Saxophone quartet members had to say: Op
- Anina Boshof
These exciting performances at the V&A Waterfront showcase what
is happening at our Centre! Thank you to all the students and staff
involved as well as all the supporters.
We do hope to have even more of these events in 2015!
On Saturday, 22 November Hugo Lambrecths Senior strings also had
the opportunity to perform at the V&A Waterfront. Here is what our
Senior Strings conductor had to say about their performance: Once
more, the winners of this year’s Orchestra Trophy made us proud!
The Senior Strings presented a full 45-minute programme at the
Amphitheatre of V&A Waterfront. The programme included a Vivaldi
Concerto for two violins and strings with the soloists, Tamryn Barron
and Danielle Salies, the first movement of Mozart’s Eine Kleine
Nachtmusik, movements from Britten’s Simple Symphony and the
Suite for Strings by J. Rutter. It was a perfect place to showcase our
talented students and the work done at the Centre. The students and
Ms Vorster did not not only perform the pieces but also introduced
Strykersfees
