Senior Drivers: Tips To Live By
• Understand that eyesight, physical dexterity and reaction times
change with age.
• Have regular vision and hearing examinations.
• When traveling, always wear your eyeglasses and hearing aid.
• Give yourself time to adjust to new eyeglasses and have your
glasses checked periodically.
• Use medication correctly, and know how it could affect your
driving. Ensure you are free from harmful side effects before
driving. With some medicines, you may not be able to drive at all.
Talk candidly with your doctor.
• Avoid high-traffic periods and busy streets. Plan errands and
appointments for times with less traffic.
• Even if you’re driving less, have your car serviced regularly and
check the brakes, lights and tire pressures.
Ever Wonder?
Where the car seat came from?
The original concept for a
child’s car seat, in 1898, was not
meant as a safety device, and it
was little more than a bag with a
drawstring to keep the child from
getting up or falling out of the
seat. The drawstring attached to
the seat of the car. Vehicles were
so scarce and traveled at such low
speeds in those days that child
safety was not a priority.
As automobiles became more
affordable and production and
performance increased, more
people were traveling with
children. By the 1930s, accidents
were increasing and yet, a child’s
safety in a collision was still not a
priority. Parents continued to use
the “baby in a bag” method as a
way of simply holding their child
in place.
It wasn’t until the 1960s that
Swedish auto designers developed
the first rear-facing child safety
seat with the express purpose of
keeping children safe in case of
an accident. To prevent injury,
the seat was made to match the
deceleration of the body to the
deceleration of the car as closely
as possible to prevent injury. Yet,
these seats sold poorly in the
marketplace. Only the most safety
conscious parents felt this was a
necessary expense.
Education became the key in
selling child safety seats. A massive push by consumer groups,
manufacturers, insurance companies and the medical community
in the 1970s educated the public
AND the government on the
importance of child safety seats.
States began passing laws requiring their use, beginning with
Tennessee. Between 1978 and
1985, all states had passed laws
for child safety seats.
Today, every vehicle carrying
children must be equipped with
child safety seats as society has
become justifiably safety conscious. There are hundreds of
models on the market for all sizes
and ages of babies. Technology
continues to improve the safety
and ease of use for consumers.

CARSTAR Spreads Holiday Cheer
2006 has been an
exciting year for the
CARSTAR family, and
with the holiday season
approaching, it gives us
a chance to reflect on all
that we have been given
in the past year. It also
gives us a chance to talk
about some of the great
charitable opportunities
our CARSTAR stores
and Business groups have
participated in. Every
year around the country
locally owned and operated CARSTAR stores
reach out in their own
communities to give back

MORE FUN INSIDE!
Gary Boesel, owner of
Alpine CARSTAR in Aurora, Colo., participates in
the local “Bikes for Kids”
program. The program
collects used bicycles and
refurbishes them for less
fortunate children in the
area. The bikes are delivered to the children of
select families just before
Christmas.
“We personally deliver
them, and the experience is
very humbling and heartwarming. For many of
the kids, it will be all they
receive for Christmas,”

his experience with the

More and more
members of his staff get
involved with the program
each year and every one
of them are looking forward to this year’s event.
In Oregon, the team
members of Old Dominion CARSTAR volunteer
their time and money
for The Relief Nursery,
where owner Patty McConnell serves on the
board of directors. This
organization provides
care for children who are
currently, or
are at risk to
become, victims of abuse.
Each year,
Old Dominion

to provide
them with the

are unable to provide for
themselves. CARSTAR
employees shop and even
deliver the Christmas
gifts to the families.
“We had such a terrific
response from our employees last year that we
provided one family with
an entire household of
furniture,” recalls Patty.
“The second family had
an infant child and our
employees provided them
with all the necessities for
the new infant — from
crib to diapers to toys.”

bring it back to the store.
The gifts are then distributed to the children.
This year’s family is a
single mom with a 7 yearold boy, a 3 year-old girl
and an 11 month-old girl.
Old Dominion looks forward to providing household items for bedrooms
and the baby, as well as
toys for the children and
clothing for all.
Patty added “We are
so excited about this that
we are having a kick-off
barbecue at the store so
we can rally the team!”

beyond the

donations. They’re
working to develop a
program where the stores
adopt a family to support
all year round!
The St. Louis Group
already offers year-round
involvement with a select
charity organization as
well, with involvement
increased during the
holiday season.

partners.
CARSTAR Business Group of St. Louis
will also sponsor the
organization’s Bowl For
Kids events; three times
throughout the year.
“We hope to get
our stores’ employees
involved in the events
by bowling and collecting pledges,” says Kathe
Carnahan of the St. Louis
Group. “We also hope
employees will get
involved as mentors and
host events at our shops.”
Even simple gestures
can make a big impact
on people who are less
fortunate. Chris Sheehy,
the CARSTAR Regional
Service Manager in the
Northeast, has donated
over 300 pounds of food
to the East Providence
Rhode Island Food
Pantry in the name of
CARSTAR. This will
provide a Christmas
dinner to those who
wouldn’t ordinarily have
one.
“With the holidays just
around the corner, this
food will reach those in
need just when they need
it the most,” says Chris.
It is people like these
and other members of
the CARSTAR family that demonstrate the
CARSTAR value of
the nobility of a life of
service. And, truly - this
is what CARSTAR is
all about. All around
the country, the nation’s
largest group of collision
repair stores is making
a difference this holiday
season.
