Getting about by bike
British Cycling and Hyndburn CTC, part of Prospects Foundation run
regular series of cycle rides
Welcome to the Hyndburn Cycle Map. Hyndburn has a growing network of off-road
cycle routes. With more cycle lanes and 20mph zones it is becoming safer to cycle on
road too.

Hyndburn Greenway (Route 6)
it’s..fun‘n’friendly
Hyndburn’s great traffic free route links Blackburn, Accrington and Baxenden. It is part
of national cycle route 6 which will eventually link London with Carlisle
Getting healthier too!...
Plan your route...Use this map to plan your route. Use quiet roads, the
canal towpath or cycle paths, to avoid the worst of the traffic.
Baxenden to Accrington
Cycling to work or the shops is a way to obtain the 30 minutes a day
exercise recommended by doctors.
It is quicker by bike...Short journeys are often quicker and easier by
bicycle. It is more flexible than public transport and can also be fun.
From Baxenden follow the cycle path on the old railway through the lovely Woodnook
Valley into Accrington
Did you know Cycling?..
Accrington Causeway
Cross the lake into Accrington Town Centre on the unique causeway. The red pillars
used to carry the railway across the lake. The lake supplied the Globe Works which
was the largest textile machinery works in the world. The Bullough family owned the
Works, a fleet of Rolls Royces, a private yacht and the Scottish Isle of Rum.
• K
eeps you young ...Regular cyclists are as fit as an average person 10
years younger.
• B
urns calories instead of carbon...A cyclist’s emissions only bother the
person behind.
Accrington to Church
• G
ives you miles of extra cash...Cycling saves you money, so you’ve
more to spend on you.
Follow the cycle path along the railway to Church
• A
n average household in the UK spends one pound in every six on
travel...think how much you’ll save travelling by bike.
Church to Rishton
Discover the heart of rural Hyndburn. From Church Kirk take the cycle path through
open countryside to rejoin the canal south of Rishton. There are great views of Pendle
Hill from the path.
• C
ycle with the children...Kids love cycling, take the children (or
grandchildren) on one of the area’s traffic free cycle paths.
• C
ycle to school ...New, safe, cycle routes are serving local schools...it’s
in a class of it’s own.
From Rishton follow the canal into Blackburn. There are links into Blackburn Town
Centre and Witton Park.
Hyndburn

• Cycle to college...Make cycling part of your course.
Cycle
• Cycle to work It’s the business!
Links to Rossendale
• C

eco station.
Let’s
There are plans to extend Route 6 south into Rossendale, linking to Haslingden,
Ramsbottom and Bury.
• Great Harwood cycle to Rishton and take the train from Great Harwood.
Mountain Biking
Ride on the Kings Highway to Haslingden, head
to the West Pennine Moors or take the bridleway
to Whalley. Rossendale’s Adrenaline Gateway
mountain bike area is nearby.
Wheels for all...
There are bikes for everyone at the Wheels for All Centre. If you can’t ride a
bike, or have a disability there’s help for you here at Wilson’s Playing Field,
Clayton-Le-Moors.
www.cycling.org.uk 01925 234213
When sharing routes...
1. Cycle slowly past pedestrians, giving them plenty of room. For more information about Cycling in Lancashire
www.visitlancashire.com/cycling-lancashire
2. O
n downhill sections watch your speed. You will be surprised how
quickly you can pick up speed.
Canal towpath
Much of the canal towpath in Hyndburn has been upgraded to allow use by cyclists
3. D
o not assume other users can hear or see you. Use your bell or say
‘hello’ and ‘thank you’.
Huncoat Greenway
4. You are legally allowed to cycle on cycle paths and bridleways, but not
on footpaths.
When complete the new Greenway will link the north side of Accrington with Huncoat.

Pennine Lancashire’s growing network of off-road cycle routes uses old railways,
canal towpath and cycle paths. Soon you will be able to ride off-road all the way from
Blackburn to Barnoldswick. This great countryside has splendid views to Pendle Hill
and the South Pennines. Stop for a break at one of the canal-side attractions, cafés
and pubs. See how rich and poor used to live and work. Cycle to Gawthorpe Hall, near
Padiham or Witton Park in Blackburn or Towneley Hall in Burnley.

Further Information
Some Hyndburn cycle routes follow paths shared with walkers and horses. From the canal towpath at Rishton follow the cycle path on the old railway to Great
Harwood. The railway was built to avoid congestion at Accrington Railway Station. It is
hoped to extend the cycle path over Martholme Viadvct to Padiham and Burnley
