The Anti-Bullying Assembly
By: Christian Lee
On October 12th, 2015, the entire Middle School attended an assembly about
bullying. This assembly was very unique. In previous years, there were various outside
presenters coming to Tenafly Middle School to talk about when they got bullied or when
they bullied others. But this year, our teachers and staff came out and told their stories
about how they got bullied or actually bullied others. This year’s assembly was very
interesting because we knew the people on stage while listening to their stories. As a
bonus, they brought in and projected pictures of themselves when they were around our
ages. It made us realize our teachers and staff went through similar situations when
they were young. The stories were very touching and most students changed their minds about
bullying and now know that bullying is a very serious issue and vital topic to talk about. Overall, the
staff of TMS did a great job sharing their stories and the assembly was very meaningful.
Reach Out
By: Tais Ramos and Anna Martinez
Every year, the sixth graders go on an annual trip to Club Getaway. Students are
encouraged to “Reach Out” (hence the name of the trip) and make new friends while doing many
activities such as archery, zip line races, rock climbing and much more.
Once students arrived at the TMS cafeteria, they found their team color table (White, Navy,
or Indigo). After they checked in with a teacher, students were given a name tag. The tag had their
names on it, their Club Getaway team color, their bus number, teacher chaperone, table number,
and cabin number. Next students grabbed a shirt that was their assigned color and went to the old
gym. Inside the gym, students found their Club Getaway team, met their teacher chaperone, put on
their t-shirt and waited for each bus number to be called. After putting the bags under the Coach
buses, students had to wait for EVERYONE to load onto their bus and for teachers to take
attendance. It was a three hour journey to Kent, Connecticut, and the buses played movies to keep
students busy.
Once students arrived, they grabbed their bags, went to the cabins and met the people who
would stay with them overnight. After they settled in, students met their assigned groups and
Getaway counselor. Many activities took place on the Club Getaway grounds. Everyone had such
a wonderful time, and even the teachers participated in some of the activities! “Geronimo” was one
of students’ favorites activity. Geronimo consisted of a platform built on top of two trees about
twenty five feet high in the air! Students climbed the trees onto the platform and jumped off
attached to a bungee cord. We interviewed a student who went on the 2015-2016 sixth grade
Reach Out trip and asked what her favorite activity was and she said, “My favorite activity at Club
Getaway was Geronimo.” Although Geronimo was a popular activity, some people who had a fear
of heights did not enjoy it. For those students, it was it bit scary. Students also enjoyed kayaking,
the bungee trampoline, aero ball, swings, blind hikes, or aerial park just to name a few of the other
activities.
Before dinner, students had about twenty minutes of free time when they could relax, talk to
their cabin mates, and dress warmly for the evening activities. One sixth grader said, “the best
things to eat there were the tacos.” Another students agreed, “the tacos were definitely a good
choice.” After dinner, the sixth graders were split in half. One half went to the animal show, and the
other half went to the game show. At the animal show, the presenter brought an owl, an eagle, a
crocodile, a lizard, two snakes (one baby boa constrictor) and a lynx. At the game show, students
were divided into four teams—blue, yellow, green, and orange. Students answered questions and
team members had to dance!!! After the activities students got ready for bed and went to sleep.
In the morning, everyone woke up and went to the dining hall for breakfast. Students sat at
various tables to meet new people on their teams. Breakfast was made up of eggs, tater-tots,
cereal, yogurt, pancakes and more. After a nice breakfast, there were more activities followed by a
buffet lunch. Lunch consisted of pasta, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, pizza, salad, and
some very delicious desserts. After lunch, bags were packed back onto the buses and everyone
headed back to TMS. Overall, it was a fun experience and students made new friends.

Ms. Giuntini Interview
Getting to know Mr. Rosenthal
By: Alec Kudler
By: Alan Tse
When Ms. Giuntini was asked how she
liked being a new teacher at TMS, she said that
she felt really welcome here. She shared that her first year
of teaching in TMS is going great. She loves not having to
drive over the George Washington bridge to get to work.
Ms. Giuntini came to TMS after she became an official
resident of New Jersey and because there are very few
schools better than Tenafly Public Schools. Ms. Giuntini
also mentioned that she went to college at Saint Joseph's
University. She attended college knowing she wanted to
be a teacher. In fact, she never saw herself being anything
else than a teacher. Prior to coming to TMS she taught in
the Bronx, at Corner Stone Academy for Social Action
Middle School. Here in TMS, Ms. Giuntini likes to
collaborate with her fellow literacy teachers. She shared
that she really appreciates the school motto of “take care
of yourself, take care of this place and take care of each
other” and suggests that teachers should apply it every
day. In her free time Ms. Giuntini loves to watch television.
She enjoys watching Game of Thrones, Homeland, and
her all time favorite show is Breaking Bad. In addition,
Ms. Giuntini enjoys going to concerts, music festivals,
dancing, baking, and reading. Overall, she loves her new
classroom and was an interesting person to interview. She
has an optimistic personality that will help students
appreciate her and learn from her. Tiger Tales wishes Ms.
Giuntini much success in her new position!
Ms. Ashby
By: Hannah Joung and Logan Wong
A lot of new staff members joined our
Tenafly community of teachers this school
year. Tiger Tales had the pleasure of interviewing Ms.
Ashby, one of the new math teachers. Ms. Ashby
graduated from West Virginia University and moved to
New Jersey to find a teaching position. She was fortunate
enough to find one in TMS!
Ms. Ashby previously taught mathematics in
Maryland, and she was always determined to become a
math teacher, even though math was not her favorite
subject. She was inspired to become a math teacher by
her own eighth grade math teacher who helped her learn
how much fun math can be.
Among the fun facts Tiger Tales learned about
Ms. Ashby was that she one brother and no children. Ms.
Ashby likes going on long walks with her dog, and she is
crazy about going to the beach. She has interest in
learning more about the arts, but she lacks skills in this
area. Her lucky number is 1, and her favorite color is
yellow. Her favorite teams in football are the Redskins and
the Mountaineers, and her favorite foods are pizza and
cheese (of course!).
Ms. Ashby enjoys teaching in Tenafly and she is
working on making new friends at TMS. But, most
importantly, Ms. Ashby wants each and every one of her
students to enjoy math and have fun with it!
Mr. Rosenthal is one of the Family Life
teachers here at Tenafly Middle School. He began
teaching here last December, as a substitute for Mrs.
Prinz, who is on maternity leave until January. He said
this past year has been great working with students and
staff.
Before coming to Tenafly Middle School, Mr.
Rosenthal taught at a high school called Tappan Zee. He
was a substitute there for about a year and a half. For his
college experience, he attended East Stroudsburg
University, which is located in East Stroudsburg,
Pennsylvania.
Mr. Rosenthal was inspired to become a teacher
after he was a student who had many great teachers. His
goals as a teacher are to help students make healthier
decisions by giving them many resources. Mr. Rosenthal
tries to apply information from the student’s lives to
motivate them. The more information they can relate to,
the more motivated the students become.
Some advice he wants to give to his students is to
enjoy their time at TMS and everything about the school.
TMS is a great place and the students here are very
fortunate. Mr. Rosenthal enjoys the enthusiastic students
and staff and wants to thank them for being so great. In
addition, the students and staff made it fun to teach and
help him to enjoy TMS even more.
One of Mr. Rosenthal’s interesting hobbies is
dressing up as Batman on weekends. Also, in secret, Mr.
Rosenthal likes Mr. Cilento's beard. Best wishes to you Mr.
Rosenthal and thank you for what you give to our students!
Ms. Honschke Interview
By: Alec Kudler
Ms. Honschke is an exciting and
outgoing person to interview who thinks that
our school is a lot of fun. The students and faculty are
really welcoming! Ms. Honschke shared with Tiger Tales
that what really attracted her to TMS were the great things
she has heard about us. Based on that information, she
believed that it would be really awesome to teach here.
Ms. Honschke attended Towson University. And
teaching has always important to her. In fact, when she
was little, she made her brothers play school and they
were her students. Prior to coming to TMS, Ms. Honschke
taught at Toms River Schools for two years and at Sage
Day High School for another two years.
Ms. Honschke really appreciates her colleagues
and thanks the administration for guidance, support, and
advice. Ms. Honschke advises her colleagues and other
teachers to not suffer in silence, but to ask questions
because everyone is willing to help. During her down time,
Ms. Honschke enjoys spending time with family and
friends, going to the beach, going outside, eating fro-yo,
and reading. She also loves Friends re-runs and the
movies she likes are Finding Nemo and Elf. It was a very
pleasurable experience to interview Ms. Honschke and she
is a great addition to the staff of TMS! Tiger Tales wishes
you much success in your teaching endeavors!

goal as a teacher is to pass this passion onto her
students. "I want everyone in my class to love science,"
she said during the interview. This year in seventh grade
is learning biology, the study of all living things from single
cells to ecosystems, and from bacteria to the human
body. She likes teaching using visual demonstrations and
she makes her students think by asking hard questions to
challenge them. Her classes includes hands-on labs and
activities.
She really likes the students here at TMS and
she shared that her favorite science fact is giraffes have
the same amount of neck bones as a human. However,
their neck bones are much larger than ours! Tiger Tales
welcomes Ms. Solis to TMS and wishes her much
success and joy in teaching!
Interview: Ms. Hong
By: Eunice Koo
Ms. Hong worked as a leave
replacement teacher at TMS and she taught
STEM during first quarter . She was part of the integrated
arts team at TMS and covered grades six, seven and
eighth grades. Tiger Tales did have a chance to interview
her before she left our school. Ms. Hong shared that in her
time here, all her students were respectful, and eager to
learn. In addition, the staff was so helpful and friendly.
She enjoyed teaching STEM and it was different kind of
class to teach compared to math which she also is
certified in and likes to teach.
Ms. Hong taught in Englewood and Bergen Tech
before coming here. .She also shared that her favorite
subject in middle school actually is science. In Korea She
attended college in Korea and went to Ewha Girl’s
University. Among her interesting hobbies are eating

teacher are to explore creative, fun ways to teach math
and to grow and learn with her students.
Ms. Saniewska’s has an interesting teaching style.
She likes to give lectures, make her students work in
groups, give projects related to the real world, and let her
students use the Smartboard to explain things.
Finally, she believes that teaching is a very
rewarding profession. At the end of a school year, Ms.
Saniewska shared that if she has made a difference to
even one student, then she has accomplished so much!
Welcome to TMS and best wishes ahead!
Ms. Meluso Interview
By: Alec Kudler
For many people, work is something
that they dread going to but for Ms. Meluso,
it’s a different story. She shared that her fellow teachers
make each day better than the previous one. Ms. Meluso
says her year so far has been very productive. She
wanted to teach at Tenafly because she has heard many
great things about our school district. Ms. Meluso went to
Fordham University and NYU. When Ms. Meluso was
asked when she decided to become a teacher she gave a
very interesting response. She said when she was in high
school, she used to babysit and these children's’ parents
told her that she worked very well with kids. Prior to TMS,
Ms. Meluso taught in Jersey City for the past 8 years. Ms.
Meluso has adjusted well to working here and has had no
difficulties. Ms. Meluso thinks this school is so welcoming

Interview with Mrs. Piccinich
By: Irene Kim and Jooeun Lee
“Don’t hate math! You don’t have to love
math, but discover and ask how or why people
like it. Then you will soon realize that you can actually love
math.” This is a quote by Mrs. Piccinich who can inspire
her students to become motivated math learners.
Mrs. Piccinich is one of the new seventh grade
math and algebra teachers this year. Before coming to
TMS, she taught at many different places; including
Palisades Park and Haworth.
During this interview, Mrs. Piccinich shared that
she was inspired to love mathematics because her math
teacher during freshman year in high school planted a
seed in her heart. Her teacher not only taught math, but
taught each and every one of her students, including Mrs.
Piccinich, with a caring and respectful determination. Her
amazing enthusiasm and dedication caused the seed in
Mrs. Piccinich’s heart to grow and she decided that her
future position would be to become a math teacher. She
enjoys teaching math because she thinks about each of
the problems she presents. She pretends the problem is a
puzzle or a challenge. Each problem is like a fun obstacle,
and each solution is a triumph; a personal victory.
Now, about her personal life! She was born in
Hoboken, New Jersey. She has an older brother, Walt,
who is ten years older than her. Her hobbies are traveling
and running. Some of the many places she’s been to
include Italy, Spain, and Greece. In addition, she has four
lovely children: Alexie (17), Jake (13), and twins Zachary
and Luke (9).
Mrs. Piccinich adores all her students. She tries
to learn about each and every one of them. She always
finds something interesting or appealing about each of
them. She always finds something praiseworthy about
each of them.. Another trait she tries to work on herself is
to improve her own errors. For instance, whenever she
grades tests and many of her students receive poor
grades, she reflects on her past teaching methods and
thinks about what she can do to improve her students’
learning. When her students improve, she improves.
So as this article comes to a close, we hope you
got to know Mrs. Piccinich better! Since this is all about
teaching math, here is a math problem. To make it more
entertaining, the first person to answer a math question for
each grade receives a prize. If you have any questions or
have figured out the solution to the math problem, just
email [email protected]. Please
only answer the math problem for your grade. Show your
work when you turn it in or it will not count. Also, it’s okay
to be wrong, so try your best. If you get it wrong, you’ll get
to learn something new! We wish you good luck!
6th Grade: What is the area of the shape formed by the
three coordinates: (2,3), (2,-1), (-1,-1)?
Hint: Graph the coordinates on graph paper.
7th Grade: What is the smallest positive integer that is
neither prime nor square and that has no prime factor less
than 50?
A) 3127 B) 3133 C) 3137 D) 3139 E) 3149
Hint: Try seeing if it is prime first, eliminating, and then
working on the squares, eliminating, and then coming to a
conclusion based on the remaining choices.
8th Grade: Mr. Jones has eight children of different ages.
On a family trip his oldest child, who is 9, spots a license
plate with a 4-digit number in which each of two digits
appears two times. "Look, daddy!" she exclaims. "That
number is evenly divisible by the age of each of us kids!"
"That's right," replies Mr. Jones, "and the last two digits just
happen to be my age." Which of the following is not the age
of one of Mr. Jones's children?
A) 4
B) 5
C) 6
D) 7
E) 8
Hint: Let s be the set of the ages of Mr. Jones' children and
try process of elimination.
Thank you for inspiring us Mrs. Piccinich! Good luck
to you!

By: Luca Ahn-Cooper
This is Ms. Bongiovanni’s first year of
teaching and Tiger Tales had the pleasure of interviewing
her! Ms. Bongiovanni graduated from Rutgers University.
She chose to become a sixth grade Social Studies teacher
because she loves history and when she was a student
teacher, she really enjoyed working with students this age.
Most interesting is that Ms. Bongiovanni didn’t like Social
Studies as a child, but she has since changed her mind!
Ms. Bongiovanni has two siblings: an older sister
who is 28, and a younger sister who is 14.She lived in North
Brunswick as a child and recently moved to this area. She
likes to write, read, and go to football games. Her favorite
sports team is the Giants and her favorite movie is The

The New TMS Logo
By: Christian Lee and Brian Shin
This past September, TMS held a contest for a
new school logo. The contestant who
designed or drew the best logo would win
the contest. Sixth grader, Chantel Liang,
drew the winning logo which is now being
used on shirts and printed on other items
related to TMS.
This contest was unique because it was the first
time a competition of this sort took place in TMS and this
new idea came from Mr. Fabbo. Many students enjoyed
participating and many entries were submitted..
It
certainly was very difficult to choose just one winning logo
from all of the possibilities. But Chantel’s clearly was the
entry that best represented Tenafly Middle School and the
message of the school.
The Student Organization is already selling cool
shirts with Chantel’s logo imprinted on them. When Mr.
Fabbo announced the winner over the intercom, everyone
cheered for Chantel. This logo can also be found on the
Tenafly Middle School page on the district’s
website. Congratulations, Chantel! Tenafly Middle School
is proud of your accomplishment as the first winner of our
school’s logo drawing contest!
Interesting World Records
By: Erin Hong, Eunhye Choi, and Jiaming Li
Did you know the blue whale is also
called the Balaenoptera musculus? It is a
marine mammal belonging to the Baleen
Whales (Mysticeti). They look blue
underwater but are actually gray on the
surface. At 30 meters or 98 feet in length and about 180200 tons or more in weight, it is the largest animal and the
heaviest known to ever exist. Its skull is over 5 meters tall!
The blue whale is a carnivore and eats mostly krill which is
a type of plankton. They are hunted, but not easy to catch
because of their amazing speed. Unfortunately, they are
an endangered species since sharks and killer whales
have been killing them. Many whalers kill them for their oil.
Another impressive record is the one about the
tallest man on earth. Sultan Kosen is the tallest man alive.
He measures 251 centimeters (8 ft. 2 3/4 in). He lives with
his parents and three brothers and sister. They are all of
normal height. Kosen was not able to finish his education
due to his height, so he currently works as a farmer. He
enjoys a normal lifestyle and also enjoys playing computer
games with his friends. In October 2013, Kösen married
Merve Dibo from Syria, who is ten years younger than him.
The smallest living creatures ever is a Pygmy
Marmoset. It is one of the world's smallest monkey
breeds. The adults weigh only 4 to 5 ounces and grow to
be six inches long). They live in the Amazon Rainforest
and can leap between trees while eating insects and tree
sap. They have sharp teeth and claws but are relatively
docile.
Stay tuned for the next edition of the world’s most
interesting records.

Magazine Fundraiser
By: Jiaming Li
Sixth grade students in our school participated in a
magazine fundraiser assembly early in the school year.
They were asked to sell magazines in order to earn prizes
and raise money for their future 8th grade overnight trip. In
addition to magazines, tumblers are available for sale too!
The tumblers are based on sports teams and have other
fun and creative designs on them. Students ask their
families, friends, and neighbors to buy magazines or
tumblers and earn money. Once they complete their orders,
students could also earn prizes in the and pick them up on
Fridays from the cafeteria. Among the prizes are passes to
a game truck, candy, earbuds, cellphone chargers, and
even a mini refrigerator for the bedroom. The person who
sells the most items or has the most orders will also
receive a $50.00 reward!
There are so many different types of magazines for
children, teens, men and women available. Some topics
include sports, cooking, and housekeeping. There even is
a buy one get one free section! The magazines are priced
up to 70% cheaper than when bought at stores. Some even
were 90% off the list price. The tumblers are reasonably
priced at about $18 to $20 each. This assembly helped
everyone learn about the various magazines and is a
worthwhile fundraiser to support!

Pop Music
By: Hannah Joung and Logan Wong
By: Daniel Shin
Do you want to catch up on the latest, hottest songs? If
so, this article is truly fit for you. We were first inspired to write
about pop music because we’re obsessed with it! Anyways, we
will tell you about our favorite songs, the newest songs, and our
favorite singers.
Have you ever listened to “Wildest Dreams” by Taylor
Swift? She was a famous country music singer, but she decided
to try different music genres. Pop music became her new focus
and since then she has recorded songs like: “Shake It Off,”
“Wildest Dreams,” “Bad Blood,” “Blank Space,” “Style,” and “You
Belong to Me.” She is a great singer and role model to younger
girls.
We recommend listening to “Photograph” by Ed
Sheeran. The song talks about him growing up and how you
can’t hold onto things forever. Ed Sheeran’s songs are
emotional and heartwarming. He rarely writes songs that are
silly or have no meaning.
Another song we recommend is “Good For You” by
Selena Gomez. The song’s chorus is the best and Selena
Gomez is a great singer. She used to be an actress on the
Disney Channel. Now she is focusing more on singing and
making new songs than television.
We surveyed the sixth grade teachers and students in
the Fall to find out their favorite pop songs. Here are the results.
You will notice that many people voted “Watch Me” by Silento.
Favorite Songs

“Watch Me” by Silento: 34 people


Technology is becoming more sophisticated every day and
becoming extremely useful everywhere. It’s important to keep up with
the news in this area.
3-D Printed Cars- In 2010 Kevin Czinger, co-founder of a
small electric-car company, had a brilliant idea. He decided to make a
cleaner vehicle and one that would use less fuel and emit less carbon,
as the life of a car is dirty. Most pollutants associated with a car are
not from the car itself, but from making the parts for the car. Carmaking is a dirty process, one that requires many pollutants. In fact,
the actual making of electric cars does greater environmental damage
than the reduced emissions that they have. To stop this problem,
Kevin quit his electric-car company and started Divergent
Microfactories. He created a 3-D printed car called the “Blade”, which
weighs only 1,400 pounds. The actual structure weighs only 61
pounds so it is easy and lightweight to carry and is made out of 69
aluminum parts. Although it uses a natural engine like most cars, it
reduces the emissions because it is so light compared to other cars.
An average car weight is 4,000 pounds while the Blade is only 1400
pounds. The microfactory made Kevin Czinger’s dreams come true.
The Blade is inexpensive to produce, efficient and clean. Kevin plans
to make this technology available for anyone with 3-D printers and the
necessary materials. Kevin hopes his designs will lure people in to
help make more cars of this sort.
A Fighter Jet on Wheels is another new idea. For decades,
humans have had a need for speed. This time, Americans think they
have got it beat. This under-construction vehicle is made out of
special aluminum alloys that are used to go to space. It’s able to spin
over 10,000 revolutions per minute, making it the fastest wheels ever
bolted onto a car. The car has 500 real time sensors to provide
feedback, an aerodynamically neutral body to make sure it doesn’t go
flying, extreme propulsion with 3 Nammo hybrid rockets, and an
extreme deceleration, with two backup parachutes just in case. The
Bloodhound SSC is expected to reach top speed of 1,065 miles per
hour, making it faster than the last car by 302 miles per hour. It
weighs in at 17,000 pounds, its length is 44 feet, and it has 22 tons of
thrust. When this car runs next year, prepare to be amazed at its
speed.
Hydrogen Fuel-Efficient Cars- Modern cars now have an
average of 24.1 miles per gallon on a dirty tank of oil. Toyota engineer
Matt McClory managed to make a fuel-efficient hydrogen car. It has
exceptional range and can go 310 miles compared to an average
hydrogen car which tops out at 250 miles an hour. Hydrogen cars are
good because they use oxygen and hydrogen combined together for
energy. Hydrogen and oxygen combined create water and electricity.
Water becomes the only emission and the car gets energy. With water
as the only emission, there is no environmental damage. That said,
hydrogen cars can go a long way with just about 5 gallons of gas! But
don’t think about buying one yet, as making hydrogen fueled cars
affordable is still a while away. Be on the look out for more new
technology in our future.
Who will Win the Gold?
By: Tais Ramos
Every four years, countries from all over the world gather to compete in several sports such as gymnastics, swimming, volleyball
and many more. This great event is known as the Olympics. This year's summer Olympics will take place in Brazil. So, who will win the
gold?
Let’s start with gymnastics. With an impressive score of 62.232, Gabby Douglas took home the gold in the all around women’s
individual. In second place, was Victoria Komova from Russia. Lastly, in third was Aliya Mustafina, also from Russia. Will they be coming
back for another round? If so, who will win the gold?
Next is swimming. For the 200 meter individual the gold went to Shiwen Ye with a 2:07.57, the silver went to Alicia Coutts an d the
bronze went to Caitlin Leverenz. Congratulations to China, Australia, and the U.S.A. Will they take another dive and if so, who will win the
gold?
Last is volleyball. Team wise, I am proud to say Brazil won the gold! Would you guess the U.S.A. won the silver? But it’s true.
Japan won the bronze. Will all three teams compete again? If so, who will win the gold?
To find out more, you can visit the Olympics' official site www.olympics.org or watch the 2016 Olympics which will be held in Rio de
Janeiro in August 2016!

Hawking Radiation
By: Edward Kim
Black holes are stars with extremely large masses that have run
out of fuel (hydrogen) and collapsed under their own gravity. Of course,
we don’t know for sure if these objects in space exist or not. Scientists
are only under the assumption that black holes exist because Einstein’s
theory of relativity predicted so.
Anyway, when a star of several solar masses collapses under
its own gravity, it forms a singularity, which is a point in space-time
continuum that is infinitely dense and massive. “Surrounding” the
singularity is a Schwarzschild Radius, also known as the “event horizon”
of the black hole. However, remember that the Schwarzschild Radius
doesn’t apply to just black holes. It’s found from any object using this
formula: 2 times the gravitational constant of the universe times the
object’s mass divided by the speed of light squared. This basically
marks the boundary of the point of “no return.” This means that if
something passes through the Event Horizon of the black hole, it will
never escape. It is because the escape velocity (the velocity it takes to
“escape on object”) is the speed of light. The speed of light is the cosmic
speed limit of the universe, so technically nothing can escape from a
black hole once it passes through its event horizon.
Now moving on from black holes, let’s get started on Hawking
radiation, the main topic here. Let’s begin with quantum physics. In a
vacuum (empty space), there is something called quantum uncertainty,
where virtual particle pairs are randomly created and annihilated. Virtual
particles are basically subatomic, elementary particles (like electrons,
gluons). A virtual particle pair is usually a pair of a particle and an antiparticle (a particle with the same mass but opposite electric or magnetic
properties as its regular particle pair). A perfect example of a virtualparticle pair is an electron and a positron.
When a virtual-particle pair is randomly created in a vacuum,
the particles in the pair almost immediately annihilate each other. But
what Stephen Hawking, a famous British physicist, claimed was when
these virtual particles are randomly created at the event horizon, one of
the particles would be sucked in by the event horizon, while the other
would escape, before the virtual particles annihilate each other.
Someone watching this process from a safe distance (would
observe that the black hole had emitted or radiated a single particle or
antiparticle. Antiparticles are almost impossible to observe since they
immediately disappear when they come in contact with normal matter.
Through the perpetuation of this process of radiating particles
and antiparticles, the black hole loses energy, and therefore loses some
of its mass (since e=mc squared, mass is just a condensed form of
energy).
After billions of years, the black hole will eventually lose all its
mass and evaporate altogether all because of Hawking Radiation.
Unique Winter Drinks
By: Richard Holland
Winter is here! Everyone loves a good cup of hot chocolate,
but why have a regular boring cup of hot chocolate when there are so
many unique and tasty winter drinks out there.
Chocolate Soup- Have you ever wanted a chocolate drink, but it wasn’t
filling, or good enough? Well, this chocolate soup is the drink for you!
This recipe is for multiple people.
 Chocolate wafers
 2 cups Heavy Cream or Milk
 Toppings– chocolate chips, sprinkles, etc.
 Candy canes
 Whipped cream
Amounts of each ingredient varies. Fill a saucepan with the milk or
cream halfway to 3 quarters to the top. This depends on how much
chocolate you add. Once the cream is bubbling a little, mix in the
chocolate, and take the saucepan off the stove. Mix the chocolate until
the soup is thick. Add toppings and you have a chocolate soup.
Nutella Hot Chocolate- It’s even better than hot
chocolate, it’s hot Nutella!
 1 cup of milk
 2.5 tbsp. Nutella
 Tiny pinch of salt
 1 tbsp. of cocoa powder
In a small sauce pan, over medium heat, whisk
ingredients together until well blended. Put some
whipped cream on top, and drink the most amazing hot chocolate
in your life.
Hot Butterbeer- Pretty much everyone who has read Harry
Potter has desperately wanted to try butterbeer. What if I told you
that there is a real recipe. There are many different versions, but
since it’s winter here is the hot version. This recipe serves 2.
 2 glasses of milk
 2 tbsp. of brown sugar
 2 tbsp. of butterscotch syrup (not butterscotch maple syrup.
This has the consistency of chocolate syrup).
Warm 2 glasses of milk on medium heat in a pot then add the
brown sugar and butterscotch syrup. Stir until no trace is left. It
may look like warm milk but it tastes like heaven. Feel free to add
food coloring to make it look orange (please note I didn’t test food
coloring with this drink).
The “Butter”
 1/3 cup of heavy cream
 2 tbsp. of sugar
 1 tbsp. of powdered sugar
Whip ingredients together with an electric whisk until you have
soft peaks. Pour the butter over the “beer”.
Feels like a… What?
By: Maia Liakhovitski
Have you ever asked your friends (or anyone else),
“doesn’t today feel like a Friday?” Have you ever wondered why
days of the week seem to have feelings for you? I know I have,
and I’m not alone! For example, when I asked one of my
colleagues during Tiger Tales club about this, he told me, “yes! I
get that all the time and I hate it so much!” It seems to be a
mystery of life, and I decided to do some research from the
books in our public library and online. Here is what I found:
It can actually be as simple as your brain misreading
the calendar or planner in the morning. Maybe you
unconsciously wrote your homework in the wrong day, and since
then, you’ve been walking around in a Monday-trance,
completely oblivious to the fact that it’s actually Tuesday.
However, you might find yourself not relating to that explanation.
You may feel like it’s something deeper, so...maybe it comes
down to your brain having a routine. It could happen if a weekly
event is, for some reason, moved to a different day of the week.
For example: say you have a weather-permitting track meet
every Wednesday after school and there was a storm prediction
for a Wednesday and the meet was moved to Thursday. You
might be running around the track that day, doing your laps, and
asking the person jogging next to you why everyone keeps trying
to convince you that it’s a Thursday, when you know very well
that’s not true.
Yet another possible reason might be the weather.
That’s often true for me. It could be that for the past month, most
of the Tuesdays have been dreary, and then it rains on Friday
and you think, today just has to be a Tuesday. The brain is
thinking and feeling a pattern. It could also be that you associate
different weather with certain feelings. For example, I link Fridays
with finality and the end of things. It is the end of the school
week. So when I take a test that ends a unit or hand in a big
project on a random day, it strongly feels to me like a Friday.
Well - isn’t it?

TABBY AND GABBY
Welcome to the Tabby and Gabby Advice Column!
As you may already know, Tabby has a sweet, kind personality and is everybody’s friend. Gabby, on the other
hand, is eternally grumpy and trusts no one. Whether they want to or not, both of them address each problem separately
and give their own opinion. Their advice makes for very interesting reading 100% of the time, and exactly 50% of the
advice given to every person who asks for it is helpful advice. Remember – don’t let Gabby depress you and enjoy our
advice column!
Tabby and GabbyI’m always late for my class after gym! How can I make it on time? I can't be late every day.
-Turtle Pace
Dear Turtle Pace Wow, that’s an easy solution! There are a few ways to
solve this problem. You could talk to your teacher. They
probably have gone through this before and will have a way
to solve it. Also, talk to your gym teacher. He or she will
understand and you can ask if they can let you go sooner.
Also you should not talk to your friends too much - that can
suck up time. You should bring your backpack too, so if you
are late, you don't have to go to your locker to grab your
bag and binders.
-Tabby
Dear Turtle Pace,
OMG! Nobody cares! But, since I have to answer this
question, here's my answer. STOP talking to people while
you’re changing. I mean seriously, it’s a locker room! Not
the mall!
With lots of “concern”,
Gabby
Tabby, Gabby, I need your help! My locker keeps getting stuck and I never make it in time for class! I can not get
detention.
Locker glue
Dear Locker Glue This is my favorite job in the world! First things first, go down to
the office or to a teacher and tell them about your situation. Maybe
they will switch your locker. If they say that they will get your locker
fixed, you can also ask a friend if you can store stuff in his or her
locker until you can get it fixed. If you want, you can ask teachers if
you can keep your binders in their room until the locker is unglued.
-Tabby
Dear Locker Glue
Well, have fun in detention! Just know in
your heart that there is nothing I can do to help
you.
-Gabby
Dear Tabby and Gabby,
My dog keeps licking my homework! So every time I write on it it breaks! Now because of that stupid joke my teachers
never believe me!
-Homework Licker
Dear Homework Licker Super easy. One way to fix this problem is to make
sure that when you’re doing your homework, you keep the door
closed so that your dog does not come in to get your homework
wet. At night you can zip your backpack closed, place it on a
shelf and close the door. Don't leave your homework out on
your desk, bed, table, floor or wherever you do your homework.
If your dog does tackle and lick the homework, let it dry over
night and if you didn't complete it, do it in the morning.
-Tabby
Dear Homework Licker WOW, I totally believe you! (Sarcastic sigh). Are
you sure you even have a dog? Because if you don't,
this is just sad. But if you do… QUIT BLAMING IT ON
THE DOG!!! You're so immature! You know what, I don’t
even know why I’m answering this question! Thank You
for wasting my precious time!
“Love”,
Gabby

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 & 2
By: Jim Mikulsky
In the game: The Force
Unleashed 1 and 2, Darth
Vader, one of the main
characters in the plot, has a new
secret apprentice. This makes
the plot very interesting. I have been a huge fan of this
game ever since I found it on YouTube. The overall
story of the game and the new addition of Darth
Vader’s apprentice, called “Star killer,” made the game
very appealing to me.
The Force Unleashed is about Darth Vader’s
secret apprentice named Star Killer. Vader found him
when he was a boy and kidnapped by the “Dark Lord.”
He trained Star Killer with the dark side of the force to
become his apprentice. Star Killer later turned to the
light side, because Vader betrayed him and Juno
Eclipse, the person Star Killer cared about most. Then
he met Rahm Kota. Kota converted Star Killer to the
light side. Star Killer eventually fought Vader and won,
but let him live. He then fought the Emperor and
sacrificed himself to save the Rebels from fleeing the
Death Star.
In the second game, Star killer got resurrected
and had to fight Vader again to save Juno Eclipse. In
the end Star killer was at a forked road: the light side
of the force or the dark side. The majority of this game
is about Star killer saving Juno Eclipse. The first game
was basically about Star killer turning to the good side
as an act to redeem himself from all the malevolent
things he had done in the past.
Contrary to this game, I am not satisfied with
the performance of the other Star Wars products. The
new Star Wars Movies got rid of original material like
the story of the Clone Wars and all the other video
games and books related to it. Star Wars also got rid
of “Force Unleashed.” I think the Star Wars Company
made a mistake doing the removal. I think they should
keep the story and others for EP.VII.
From the game, I like the characters Star Killer
and Rahm Kota. I like Star Killer because the Rebellion
was saved by him. He was once a Sith but became a
Jedi. Star Killer did not betray anyone, and I liked this
trait about him. Kota is a Jedi who saved Star Killer
from going back to the dark side. I admire Kota
because he saw the good in Star Killer even though he
was a bad person. A regular guy would stay away from
bad people like Star Killer.
I would like to put characters from the Force
Unleashed like Star Killer in the Rebels TV show. I can
predict that Star Killer will be Ezra’s new master and
they will battle Vader in order to ultimately conquer the
dark side of the force. They may go in the future
together in episode 9. Stay tuned to see if I am right!
The Peanuts Movie Review
By: Joshua Pyun
***(WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)***
What else can be said? In my
opinion, The Peanuts Movie is one of the
greatest animated movies ever and one
of the best adaptations of the Peanuts
comics. The movie is about Charlie
Brown and his efforts to impress the new kid at his school, a small
red-haired girl. Meanwhile, Snoopy writes a story about trying to
chase the Red Baron, his enemy, while also trying to impress a
poodle named, Fifi. While Charlie Brown and Snoopy are the
stars of this movie, there are other characters that stand out as
well, such as Linus, Lucy, Sally, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty,
Pigpen, Woodstock and others. The reason this movie is great is
because of the main story itself.
Throughout the film, Charlie Brown tries to do something
great to impress the girl of his dreams, such as doing a magic act
in a talent show, trying to finish a book report for both of them,
and dancing. In the end, none of these things work. All the while,
Snoopy tries to save Fifi from his enemy in his own story while
shooting down the Red Baron. After a huge aerial fight, when the
Red Baron’s at his weakest, Snoopy decides to let him go and
focus on saving what really matters: his love.
One day at school, Charlie Brown is congratulated for
doing great on his test. This leads to him becoming popular. But
when he’s about to receive an award for his perfect test score, he
finds out that the test was actually Peppermint Patty’s, and that
he wrote his name on her paper by accident. Feeling bad, he
admits to the whole school that he made a mistake and walks
away.
Near the end of the school year, the teacher gives the
students pen pals for the summer. And when she announces
“Charlie Brown”, the Little Red Haired Girl accepts him as her pen
pal. Charlie Brown wants to find out why before she goes to
summer camp, and that leads to a huge chase through a carnival.
When he catches her, he finds out that she chose him because of
his selfless acts throughout the year, and that even though he’s a
failure, she still thinks he’s great.
I believe both Charlie Brown and Snoopy’s plots have the
same lesson: Being selfless and nice is what matters the most:
instead of being a winner. When the bus to summer camp leaves,
everyone, even Lucy, starts to respect Charlie Brown and
consider him to be a great friend. The characteristics of the movie
are what makes Peanuts a great comedy, good lessons, and
overall, heart. This movie is a must-see for all Peanuts fans, and
if I could rate this movie from 1 to 5, I’d give it a 4.

Pokémon Mechanics
By: Gaming Guru
Pokémon has many ways to manipulate your chances
of good IVs. I’ll tell you about it in the next paragraphs. Take the
time to try them on your own.
There are different items that
guarantee your IVs but there is only
one way to do it, breeding. There are
Weight
Bracer
Belt
items that guarantee each stat is the
same as the parent. From left to right,
here is the list. The top-left determines
HP, middle-top is attack, then defense, Lens
Band
Anklet
after is special attack, special defense,
and last is speed. There is also the destiny knot. This item can
copy up to 5 stats! If you have a Pokémon with high stats and if
you want it to breed, make it hold a destiny knot.
Now, it is time to talk about EVs. Unlike IVs, EVs can be
changed. There is a hard way, an expensive way, and an easy
way. The expensive way is using vitamins. They can be bought
in different places. The hard way is beating different Pokémon
and your desired IVs. Every Pokémon gives IVs when defeated.
It is a long list so can look it up when you can. This method was
popular until Pokémon X and Y came out.
In generation six (X, Y, ORAS), Super Training was a
new feature. In Super Training, you can either play a mini game
where you shoot soccer balls at Pokémon balloons or use a
punching bag. There are small bags (+1), medium bags (+4),
and 12 EV large bags.
So you may have heard of DNA. The Pokémon
equivalent is a binary code called personality value. Personality
value is kind of like the brain, it decides everything. Shininess,
abilities, gender, and other items are determined by personality
value.
Hopefully you know more about Pokémon. Pokémon is
more than rock, paper, and scissors. So if you like Pokémon, go
use these mechanics to your advantage in your multiplayer
battle. If you haven’t played Pokémon yet, you should try it. Good
luck!

The Guide to Video Games
By: Brian Shin, Adam Wadiri, and Christian Lee
WARNING!: Viewers recommended 11 and up
Want to know about great video games and consoles? We’ll teach you everything we know about video games and consoles. In
this article, you will learn the history of video games, popular video games, and great consoles. We are also going to tell you about the
top 10 best world wide video games for 2015. The information shared is fun and cool. So stay tuned for amazing facts about video
games!
First, let’s start with the best consoles: The Xbox. The Xbox is a commonly used console for playing games. An amazing feature
of the Xbox is the Xbox live. In Xbox live, people can connect with their friends to play exciting matches. The first Xbox was released in
November 15, 2001 in North America and in Japan. In February 22, 2002, Australia released its first Xbox and in March 14, 2002, Europe
finally released theirs. The Xbox was released over 13 years ago! Another great console is the PlayStation. The PlayStation was first
released in Japan on December 3, 1994. It was then released in North America and Europe in September 1995. The Wii is a Nintendo
device. Nintendo Wikia (an official Nintendo site) says “The Wii is the seventh generation video game console created by Nintendo.” The
Wii was released in November 19, 2006 in North America. It broke sales in less than a month.
Now, “hand held gaming devices.” First, there is the DS. The DS is from the company Nintendo, and comes in many sizes and
shapes. One of the most known is the 3DS. Just like it’s name, the graphics of this device is 3D. The first DS was made in Japan on
November 1, 2008. The device went on sale in North America on November 21, 2004. The DS stand for “Developer System or Dual
Screen. This device also gives a lot of wireless connection so that other DS users can join in the game and have some fun. This device
has similar features to a Gameboy, so kids who are older now and change to a DS won't be find it so difficult.
Now, to the video games. “In October 1958, Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game”
says Wikipedia. It was a very simple tennis game, similar to the classic 1970s video game Pong. This simple minded-game turned into
what we have now. It is a revolutionized way of playing games. But playing the same type of games would be boring. That’s why there
are new versions and new categories. Video games don't only consist of one type they come in different types like action, comedy,
puzzles, education, family games, sport games.
Now on to the popular games from the past, just released, and present. There are very popular games like Star Wars:
Battlefront, and Splatoon. These two have different categories positions such as the Star Wars game is more of a realistic, future,
competitive action while Splatoon is more of a unrealistic fun game. These types of games are interesting because it is also multiplayer
so one can connect with friends in Xbox live or play online multiplayer or single player!
Recommended games: Call of Duty, Team Fortress 2 (TF2), League of Legends (LOL), Minecraft, Dota 2, and much more. And
now, last but certainly not least the top 10 video games of 2015.
