Dear Prescott students, families, and friends,
Welcome to the 2014-15 school year! It’s an exciting time of creating and renewing friendships, deepening
thinking, enhancing skills, and exploring the world through school. At Prescott we spent the summer preparing
for this time. In May and June, faculty and I relentlessly searched for dedicated, knowledgeable, and caring
teachers to and staff who could add to our robust collective knowledge of teaching and learning. I’m excited to
introduce you to an outstanding, highly skilled group of new faculty and staff later in this newsletter.
We also worked hard this summer to improve our individual and group skills in cognitively challenging
curriculum, instruction, and assessments, and in creating community. Just before the summer began, Ms. Bigby
and Ms. Lisa attended the high-quality Multi-Sensory Phonics training. In July, Teachers Ms. Kirshner, Ms.
Lindsey, Ms. Szarnych, Ms. Downing, Ms. Roche, Blundy, and Ms. Phares attended Columbia University
Teachers College’s week-long, intensive training in writing workshop here in Chicago (Ms. Roche went for two
weeks in New York!). Later that month, we hosted at Prescott an in-depth, individualized training in
Responsive Classroom, so our faculty and staff knows better ways to help students to create classroom and
school community-- Ms. Lisa, Ms. Ammons, Ms. Szarnych, Ms. Stewart, Ms. Blundy, Ms. Small, Ms. Farley,
Ms. Blundy, Ms. Diaz, Ms. Farmer, and Ms. Roberts attended. In August, another group of teachers—Mr.
McCarthy, Ms. Stewart, Ms. Blundy, Ms. Roche, and Ms. Szarnych—immersed themselves in the Socratic-like
book discussion training of the Great Books Foundation. During the summer, the faculty has enriched our
abilities to push students’ analysis, creativity, skills, problem-solving, and teamwork.
I ask you, as parents and families, to continue your rich contributions to our students’ deeper thinking and
learning, too. I encourage you to ask questions of your children each day—about their school day, their favorite
questions, their favorite books as well as their challenging skills and relationships. Tell them, too, of your own
daily successes and challenges. Let them know how you’ve solved problems. Of course, topics and language
need to be appropriate to your child’s age and raised as naturally as possible. In our parent library in the MultiPurpose Room (MPR), you can find some terrific CDs and DVDs on parenting. I recently listened in the car to
one of the Love and Logic CDs and found it very useful as a parent and principal. You can check them out
(unless I’m listening to it!) for free. Teachers and parents can talk more about home-school connections at
Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 11th at 5:30-6:30pm.
To further strengthen our home-school connection, I’ve opened a Twitter account to send you weekly photos of
student learning. My goal is to give you each week a photo that exemplifies the kind of learning that represents
high-level thinking, skills, teamwork at Prescott. I’ve sent a few photos of the construction of our new turf field
at Prescott. After creating a Twitter account, please follow Prescott learning at @PrescottCPS.
Starting next, Monday, September 8, breakfast will be at 8:30 for K-8 students who elect to eat breakfast
at Prescott and all students can eat lunch free. Breakfast will not be available during learning time of 8:45.
At 8:30, students arriving at 8:30 should enter the main entrance and go to the cafeteria to eat. Then they can go
to the playground to play. At 8:40am, the line-up bell will continue to ring just like last year and students can
line up to be led by teachers at 8:45 into the school building. This enhancement allows all students to continue
to eat breakfast while providing additional learning time at 8:45am. Breakfast—and now lunch, too—is free for
all students. Lunch menus are available at cps.edu. Looking forward to a great school year with you!
Sincerely,

Parent reminders:
Please make sure that your child is healthy and in school. Children who are not in school
are not experiencing Prescott’s rigorous curriculum. Prescott’s Level 1 status depends on an
attendance rate of 95%. If your child misses more than 1 day per month (10 total days), then
Prescott’s attendance dips below 95%. Please help to keep Prescott’s Level 1 status by getting
your child healthy and to school on time each day.
Parents who drive children to Prescott are encouraged to drop off children along Marshfield and not
Wrightwood. Marshfield is safer due to less traffic. Please do not park in the cross-walk. Your car may
be ticketed or towed. Thank you for making Prescott School a safe place for children.
If you are interested in taking your PreK child to a playground during school hours, please consider
Wrightwood Park or other nearby playgrounds. Prescott’s playground and Little Gym are not available as
they are used by Prescott students before, during, and after-school hours and for liability reasons. Thanks
for keeping your child safe!
Healthy eating at Prescott
The Chicago Public Schools Board of Education passed a policy regarding healthy eating at schools. Below is
a summary of the policy.
CPS policy
 Only highly nutritional food for children
 Limit over-eating by letting students and parent know in advance of additional food (e.g., birthday
celebration)
 Healthy heating healthy kids and stronger academic growth
To comply with the policy and to encourage healthy eating, outside food must be approved by the principal at least one week in
advance (forms are available in the office). Outside food may only be nutritional. The parent needs to bring the approval to the
lunch supervisor. The supervisor collects and returns the form to the principal.

Field Day 2014! Parent Volunteers needed.
On September 12th Prescott will host Field Day at Wrightwood Park. We are
excited to bring back this event to continue to strengthen our school community
through games and sport. The goal for students is to cooperate with classmates
in a fun atmosphere and push themselves to do their personal best.
We will have a variety of stations and in order for the event to be a success we
will need parents to help run the stations. I am hopeful that we can have two
parents at each station. I will train you on how to organize and have success at
each station, no prior knowledge required! To volunteer, please contact me at [email protected]. You will
need to be available from 12pm-4pm on the day of the event. So start your weekend early and come have
some fun with the kids at Prescott.
Thank you, Coach D

Notice of Student Record Retention and Disposal
Illinois law requires the Board of Education of the City of Chicago to maintain student educational records, which include
both “permanent records” and “temporary records” for specified periods of time. Once the retention period for each type
of student educational record has passed, the Board is no longer required to maintain the records.
A student’s permanent record contains the student’s name, date of birth, address, grade level, grades, parent(s) name(s)
and address(es), attendance records, and other minimal personal information necessary for use by the school or
mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education. The student’s temporary records include all information not contained
in the permanent record.
According to Board policy, for Chicago Public Schools, the Student Permanent Record consists of the Registration Card,
Transcript, and Student Health Folder. The Student Temporary Record consists of the Student Cumulative (or
Temporary) Folder (including, but not limited to, the Student Cumulative Record Card, information regarding serious
disciplinary infractions, and State assessment test scores) and the Special Education Folder.
The Board has determined that retention of student records based on the students’ dates of birth is the most practical and
feasible operating method to comply with the five-year State of Illinois retention requirement for student temporary
records. According to Board policy, the retention periods for student temporary records are as follows:

The Student Cumulative (or Temporary) Folder for elementary school students shall be kept until the student is 21
years old.

The Student Cumulative (or Temporary) Folder for high school students shall be kept until the student is 27 years old.

The Special Education Student Folder shall be kept until the student is 27 years old.
In accordance with Illinois law, the Board is currently retaining permanent student records for at least sixty years after the
student has transferred, graduated, or otherwise permanently withdrawn from the school.
The Board will follow the above retention schedule and will destroy these student records in the natural course of business when the
records are eligible for disposal. All rights to student educational records transfer solely to the student once the student has reached
the age of eighteen, graduated from secondary school, married, or entered into military service, unless the parent or the Illinois
Department of Children and Family Services continues as the student’s guardian beyond the age of eighteen. To review student
records after the student has transferred, graduated or withdrawn from school, parents and students may contact the student’s former
school or Student Records Services (773-535-7722).
For more information regarding student record retention and maintenance, please review the Board's policy on
“Guidelines for Maintenance of Student Records.” For a copy of the policy, log on to
www.policy.cps.k12.il.us/documents/706.1.pdf or write to the Board Secretary, Board of Education of the City of Chicago,
125 S. Clark St., Suite 600, Chicago, IL 60603.
