SHARING HER STONES
BY ALISA VASQUEZ
On April 29th of 2016 the senior class was
able to listen to an extraordinary speaker
whose mission in life is to positively impact
the lives of others. Marianne Angelillo has
dedicated her
life to speaking
to high school
students,
colleges,
church groups,
book clubs,
and parenting
groups by
sharing her
personal story.
She works
closely with the
National Safety
Council and
New York
Governor’s
Traffic Safety
Committee.
She encouraged us to carefully think about our
decisions in life. Life is a precious gift and
sometimes as a teenager, we take that gift for
granted.
Driving is a major
responsibility and it
is essential that we
understand that.
Each of us have
aspirations in life
and family and
friends that love and
care about us. Why
curtail your life? We
have to make wise
decisions and
encourage our peers
to do the same. Too
many lives have

WIZARDS FALL SHORT TO
THE MOUNTIES
BY BRIANA MONROE
It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon. The sun was out and
shining, it was one of the nicest days that Washingtonville has
seen in a long time. What better way to spend the day than
playing some baseball. The Wizards, who were 3-1 at the time
were to face off, on their home field against the Suffern
Mounties who were 4-2 and 1-1 in their league.
Coach Bauer, who was also the head coach talked about
different ways that the team was ready for the game both
offensively and defensively. “Offense basically leads to
defense. If we can hit the ball well and run well, we can then
worry about catching the ball and getting some outs.” Bauer
continued by saying that one thing the team needs to improve
on this year compared to last year, is to think more as a team.
“Right now it seems that the team’s thinking is more towards
individuals than a team thinking.”
With warm ups starting off, all you could hear was the music,
showing that everyone was concentrating and just focusing on
doing well from the top of the first inning. For the Wizards,
one minor mistake led to another, making it easy for the
Mounties to quickly take the lead. During the fourth inning, it
seemed as if a spark ignited throughout the Wizards, making
them realize that they weren’t playing to their full potential.
However, it seems as if the spark came a little too late. The
Wizards ended up losing to the Mounties 10-5. Though they
might’ve lost this game, there are still many games to win
throughout the spring.

This past Tuesday, the Wizards lacrosse team defeated
Monroe Woodbury 15-14 in a hard fought, back and forth
game. John Milmore lead the scoring for the Wizards,
scoring 6 goals, as well as having 3 assists. Dan Glynn scored
5, and Spencer O’Grady scored 3 and had 2 assists as well.
Dave Carlstrom had a great performance in goal, saving 13 of
Monroe’s shots.
With 1:09 left in the game, Monroe scored to make the score
14-12. With the game seemingly out of reach, Brandon
Lewandowski won 3 consecutive face offs, allowing for the
offense to score 3 goals in a minute, including John
Milmore’s game winner with less than 10 seconds left in the
game.
The game brings the team to 7-3, the best start in program
history. The win also puts them in a good position to go
sections for the first time ever. The team has their senior day
next Tuesday, May 10th vs NFA, as well as a game at
Kingston on Thursday, May 12th.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
BY ANDREW ORLANDO RODRIGUEZ
Many of us dream of playing a sport in college. Going to
school to pursue what you love and also get an education out
of it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. So many high school
athletes don't even get the chance to make a college roster, but
what about the ones that do? Washingtonville High School’s
very own Victoria Dimarco got the chance to make her dream
a reality.
Soccer has always been Victoria’s inspiration and motivation
to achieve anything she set her mind to. Even at the age of six,
Victoria knew she wanted to dedicate herself to playing soccer.
She had this to say when asked about her love for the game;
“Soccer extremely motivated me, and the
love for the game kept me to continue
playing. I am very passionate about
soccer and always have been. My coaches
have also inspired me to continue to play
and my friends were probably the biggest
reason why I fell in love with the game
and continued to play for all these years.
I’ve gotten the opportunity to play on the
same team with some of my closest
friends, whether it be on my high school
varsity team or on Nirvana (Travel
Soccer team). ”
STAR ATHLETE MAEGAN
VILLA
BY TREVOR TOUSSAINT
After a long journey, senior soccer superstar Maegan Villa has
committed to Sage College to play soccer for the next four
years.
Maegan is enthusiastic about her future at Sage, and is looking
forward to starting the next chapter in her life.
“When I first stepped foot on the sage campus I felt at home. I
loved everything about it. It fit me perfectly academically and
athletically. The team and coaches welcomed me with arms
wide open” Maegan asserted when asking
her about her decision to attend Sage.
However, even though she is excited about
becoming a college athlete, she is cognizant
of the fact that she is taking on a major
responsibility. Collegiate soccer is a huge
commitment, where individuals are
competing against players from all over the
world; one has to push themselves and
maintain a strong work ethic in order to be
perform well.
When speaking to Villa about what
motivated her to continue her soccer career
she asserted,
“What motivated me to
continue playing soccer in college was the
hard work that I have put into the sport,
and my love and passion for the game.”
On February 19, Victoria’s dream came
true by signing with Saint Thomas
Aquinas College (A Division 2 School) to
play college soccer for the next four
years. According to Victoria, “Saint
Thomas Aquinas College was my first
choice because it fits my athletic and
academic needs.”
Education is a second passion Victoria
will be pursuing at Saint Thomas
Aquinas College. Come the fall semester,
Victoria will be majoring in English with
a minor in History. According to
Victoria, with all the motivational figures
in her life that have helped her achieve
what she has done at her age, she feels it
is her job to motivate today's youth by
pursuing a career in teaching.
Throughout the course of Villa’s senior
season she definitely was a role model on
and off the field. As the team’s captain,
Maegan created a positive environment for
the team by encouraging them even when
they were not victorious. The next senior
captain has big shoes to fill.
Victoria DiMarco signs to St. Thomas Aquinas.
What inspires us and motivates us is what models and forms
the person we will become. It is clear to say that if you find
something that motivates you, and you pursue it, the sky's the
limit to what you can achieve.
“The advice I would give to the upcoming
seniors is to give 100% no matter what the
circumstance. Additionally, they should
start their college search early, and finish
out their senior year without any regrets”
Maegan Villa is by far one of the most talented athletes at
Washingtonville high school.
With her athletic skills she
could’ve played any sport, but she decided to play soccer.
I asked Villa why she chose soccer and she said, “That's what I
was best at. My mother was a huge role model for me because
she grew up and played soccer and still does. My coaches also
helped mold me into the player and person that I am today”
Maegan is an exceptional athlete, student, and person. Because
of her strong character we know that she will be successful in
whatever she decides to pursue.

A VERSATILE TEACHER
BY ROSS DOLSON
JIMMY IN A FICKLE
BY INDYAH GREEN
Ms. Michelle Hall is a Food & Nutrition and Child
Development teacher here at Washingtonville. Ms. Hall also
happens to be the only Food & Nutrition and Child
Development teacher in the school.
Freshman Laura Tedford has released a new comic called
Jimmy was in a Fickle. Laura drew a three part comic that
shows a young boy named jimmy being in a fickle. Which
means he is sad and feeling a bit under the weather.
When asked about what it is like to be the only teacher of
two courses she stated, “It has it’s pros and cons, on the pro
side I can make my lessons up by following state guidelines,
but as far as making sure every other teacher in the
department is doing the same thing, I don’t have that, but
the negative part is that I don’t have anyone to bounce ideas
off of and collaborate with. Sometimes I’ll talk with some of
the teachers in other departments such as Psychology to
help with Child Development or Health to help out the Food
& Nutrition course.”
She drew that jimmy’s mother came, tickled him, then made
him feel a little better. Then at the end of the comic, it shows
Jimmy sitting at a table with a pickle on a plate, fork and
knife in hand, and a big smile on his face.
During her time in college Ms. Hall had a chance to go
through an internship with the New England Patriots
football organization.
When asked about it she asserted, “After I graduated from
Washingtonville I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and I
knew that I really liked sports so I majored in Sports
Management and Business, and at my college we needed to
do an internship every year so I spoke with my dad who
knew Scott Pioli when at the time worked with the Patriots
and Mrs. Cooney was able to get me a phone interview with
him and they offered me an unpaid position where for a
semester of school I would move to Massachusetts and work
with their marketing team.”
The comic is actually inspired by her brother. She said, “Her
mother calls it a fickle when her little brother refuses to eat
his vegetables. A tickle makes everyone smile and made
Jimmy feel better.”
Personally I feel that the mother plays a key role in this
comic. It doesn’t matter what age one is, a mother’s love for
her child is like no other. Then I proceeded to ask her about
when her next comic is coming out and what the focal point is
going to be.
Laura responded to my question by talking about how she is
thinking of writing about the woodlands.
The comic is going to be based around, “...a family who
moved from the city to a forest near the biggest mountain in
Ireland. They go on mini adventures and the animals speak.”
However, the most anticipated question is when it will be out,
and she said she’s in the process of drawing right now.
Ms. Hall is also the adviser for Student Coalition and the
coach of the Varsity Girls Volleyball team. The volleyball
team is hosting a tournament on Friday, May 20th to help
raise money for the team for next year.
She is overall great teacher, person, and coach who is a
significant part of the Washingtonville High School family.

OPINIONS
LET’S PANIC
BY CHRISTINA JEROLOMAN
Panic! At The Disco, is a crazy alternative rock band that was
formed in 2004. You probably have heard of them knowingly or
not even knowing that was them when a song was on the radio.
Some of Panic’s top songs that have been played on common
radio stations are “This is Gospel”, “Miss Jackson”, “I Write Sins
Not Tragedies”, “Victorious”, and “Nine in the Afternoon”. Panic!
At The Disco has just started their 2016 tour with the band
Weezer. The concerts closest to Washingtonville is at Jones Beach
which is already sold out and at the PNC Bank Arts Center that is
almost sold out. But for those who do not know anything about
Panic!
The band was formed in Las Vegas 2004 by two guys, Ryan Ross
and Spencer Smith. Then a guy named Brent Wilson joined and
brought Brendon Urie as a temporary guitar player and backup
vocals, but after hearing him sing they made Brendon lead
vocalist. The band next started posting demos online. Taking a
chance, they sent the link to Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, who
ended up driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to meet the
band. He ended up signing them after hearing a handful of songs
in their rehearsal space. One of the guys was in college and the
other three were still finishing up high school. Panic! At The
Disco’s first album “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out” came out in
June 2005, it really took off when the single “I Write Sins Not
Tragedies” was released. When the second album “Pretty. Odd.”
was made, it had some disinterest from the band, it was scrapped
and rewritten. Early 2009 it was announced that songwriter and
member Ryan Ross would be leaving alongside Jon Walker. With
all of these differences, the band still went through touring with
Blink-182 and creating their third album. In July, they welcomed
two new full time members, Ian Crawford and Dallon Weekes.
With the band all set together, Panic! At The Disco released their
third album in February 2011. The album as a whole has a loose
theme, which inspired the title “Vices and Virtues”. After touring
the third album, they announced plans for a fourth! “Too Weird
To Live, Too Rare To Die!” was the fourth album released in July
2013, inspired by Las Vegas. Panic! At The Disco was back and
ready to change things up again! This album was hip hop infused
with a strong lean towards electronica, which caught a whole new
generation of fans and also it helped that they were a part of
supporting Fall Out Boy on their Save Rock and Roll tour.
Brendon stated on the Panic! Website “ I didn’t want to hold
anything back. No one was telling me what I could and couldn’t
say. This was my diary and the pages were filled with confessions.
About everything. About my story. What I had gone through and
what I was going through. I kept writing and never really
stopped.” Finally Spencer Smith left the band, leaving Brendon as
the sole original member. Brendon worked with his new members
and Panic! At The Disco still came out with fifth album this year
2016. If you got lost in all that madness of members coming and
going, the band is Brendon Urie still from when the band was
made in 2004 , Kenneth Harris who joined in 2015 and Daniel
Pawlovich who also joined in 2015.
About Panic! At The Disco’s music, they have five albums “A
Fever You Can’t Sweat Out”,“Pretty. Odd.”,“Vices & Virtues”,“Too
Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die”, and “Death of a Bachelor.”
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT HER
BY CAITLIN POLO
Miranda Lambert is a country singer/songwriter that has been
around since 2003. Lambert is most popular for her solo career,
but is also known for her career in the group, the Pistol Annies.
The group consists of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and
Angaleena Presley and they, as a group, have been around since
2011, but are currently taking a break. Their work includes Hell
on Heels, Hush Hush, and Annie Up. The group also sang with
Blake Shelton on one of his hits, Boys ‘Round Here.
However, Miranda Lambert, as a solo artist, has done much
more than she has with her group. Miranda Lambert’s career
truly started when she asked her father to teach her to play
guitar, so that she could write her own music. This, ultimately,
led her to win third place on “Nashville Star,” after this her
career took off. After this experience, she signed with Epic
Records, and in 2004 she dropped her first album, Kerosene,
which made it to number one on the Billboard Top Country
Albums Charts. Kerosene consisted of 12 songs, 11 of which were
co-written by Miranda Lambert. Along with this, 4 songs topped
the Top 4o Country charts. Lambert’s career launched after this
album was released.
During the next 5 years, Miranda Lambert released two more
albums, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Revolution. Both launching
her career even further. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend won Miranda
Lambert the American Country Music Awards Album of Year in
2008. From the album, Revolution came White Liar, which was
Miranda Lambert’s first top 5 hit. Revolution also won her two
CMA’s Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. Along
with this, the single The House That Built Me won Miranda
Lambert a Grammy in 2011, for The Best Female Vocal
Performance.
Her music always shows the emotional connection she has with
the lyrics. From songs such as, “Gunpowder and Lead” which
talks an abusive relationship, in which she gets revenge on the
person that abused her. And, “The House That Built Me” which
explains the relationship she has with the house she was raised
in, and how she needs to go back in order to put things in
perspective. Also, the lyrics in her song “Automatic” reminisce
on a time that was simpler for everyone. Lambert does this by
singing lyrics like, “Quarter in a payphone, drying laundry on
the line, watching sun tea in the window, pocket watch, tellin'
time,” and “Seems like only yesterday, I'd get a blank cassette,
record the country countdown, 'cause I couldn't buy it yet…”
Miranda Lambert’s career, has clearly flourished, without the
contribution of the Pistol Annies. Although, her group has
contributed to her success, and the success of the other women
in some ways, her solo career is the main reason she has been a
success. Miranda Lambert, as a solo artist will be going on tour
this summer with Kip Moore and Brothers Osborne, both of
which are fellow country artists. Lambert’s tour will be making
many stops, such as Hartford, East Rutherford, Laughlin,
Pheonix, and Bethel, New York.

COUNTRY ON THE RISE
BY DAN HEIL
Country music is one of the most liked genres in the United
States, next to rap, rock and pop. Country music is very clear
and understandable, which is why it is so popular; anyone
can easily sing along without a thought. Country is easily
relatable, singing about good summer times, woman, and
love. Everyone knows country music has a tone like no
other;however, not all musicians sound the same, giving you
a wide variety to choose from. “T-Shirt” by Thomas Rhett is
one of the most popular song on the radio right now,
composed of a very upbeat and easily sang along lyrics.
Growing up, Thomas Rhett would listen to a mix of country,
pop, R&B, rap and rock. It was a mixture of music which has
made him into the musician he is today. Decades later, he
shows his roots with Tangled Up, an album that mixes the
sound of his influences with equal doses of rock and even
rap. One of the best reasons you should love Thomas Rhett is
that there is a song for whatever you’re feeling. Rhett makes
sure he sings his heart out. Even straight forward lyrics
convey the deepest of emotions and all credit goes to the
artists who feel those emotions in their hearts as they sing.
The honesty of these artists does the trick, and keeps
listeners coming back.
The song “T-Shirt,” was made an instant hit, with a very
uptempo beat that will immediately make you happy. The
song was originally intended for Tim McGraw; however, it
sits perfectly in his album Tangled Up. Rhett has been open
about his love for fun pop stars like Bruno Mars, and “TShirt” offers lots of fun. This song is easily sang along to and
fun for everyone.
Thomas Rhett has proved himself to be a very likable
musician and has showed that country can be mixed with
genres like rap and R&B. The song “T-Shirt” is
understandably the most popular song out there. Being a
new artist, and creating a new style and new sound will
prove you to be different;and, different is what will make an
artist successful. “T-Shirt” will certainly not be everyone's
cup of tea, but the song will absolutely be a hit and continue
to build Thomas Rhett's fan base.
