General Information
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS OF CEBU
The 51th International Eucharistic Congress theme is' Christ among you! The hope of glory '(Col 1:27).
Located in the heart of the Philippine archipelago, in the region of Central Visayas, Cebu territory was joined by explorer Ferdinand
Magellan in 1521. According to the story of Pigafetta, Magellan was warmly welcomed by the native King Humabon which converts
to Christianity shortly after the queen, and four hundred of their subjects. To
commemorate the event, Magellan gave to the Queen Juana a small statue of
the Child Jesus (Santo Nino) and raised a cross on the site of the conversion. The
faithful celebrating the Santo Nino the third Sunday of January (Congress period)
with a grand procession representing the main event in the region.
The reasons for choosing Cebu had been indicated by the Bishops' Conference
of the Philippines: deepening the Eucharist devotion, to strengthen the
missionary commitment and launch the celebrations for the anniversary of the
evangelization of the Philippines (1521-2021). Taken from the Letter of St. Paul
to the Colossians, the theme of the congress wants to give impetus to the
historical path of Christians by depositing a seed of living hope in the daily
commitment to his duties and stimulating joint responsibility for today’s land
and history. The theme of hope will be linked to the announcement of God's gift to young people, which Asia is so rich of, and the
commitment to the crowds of poor of this continent. Indeed, those who participate in the Eucharist not only assume the
commitment to transform their own lives but also to transform the world according to the Gospel.
