care and compassion they extend to both
their patients and staff—their passion is
clearly evident.” Dr. Kunjukunju is equally
excited to be residing in Kansas City,
which supports her interests in running,
performing arts and visiting museums.
“Kansas City has a ‘big little city’ feel that
I am proud to call home.”
Dr. Ryan Vincent specializes in the treatment of Glaucoma. He

2 — SABATES EYE CENTERS
EPIC Surgery Center
A State-of-the-Art Surgical Center in Leawood, KS
The EPIC Surgery Center is in the University Park Medical Plaza at 112th & Nall in Leawood
When the EPIC Surgery Center
(ESC) opened in 2009, it was created as a
stand-alone outpatient facility devoted
to ophthalmic surgery in the Midwest. The
center is an independent outpatient surgery
facility designed for the use of surgical
ophthalmologists from all regional practices.
It is located on the second floor of the new
Sabates Eye Centers building in Leawood.
ESC is certified by Healthcare Facilities
Accreditation Program (HFAP) and Kansas
State Department of Health and Environment
(KSDHE). ESC includes fully equipped operating
rooms, pre- and post-operating rooms and is
staffed by scrub technicians, registered nurses
and an administrative staff to support the
surgeons who use the facility. Recently, ESC
added one of the first installations of the
new Bausch & Lomb Stellaris® PC (Procedural
Choice) in the United States.
Dr. Rohit Krishna, ESC Managing Partner
and CEO, said, “The Stellaris® PC provides an
exciting advance for vitreoretinal and cataract
surgeons who use the EPIC Surgery Center.
It allows us to perform the most advanced
techniques with an intuitive, more compact
system, reducing operating time and improving
patient outcomes and recovery times. To have
that capability available in the Kansas City area
is a tremendous advantage for our patients.”
Bausch & Lomb, the global eye health
company, developed the new state-of-theart Stellaris® PC Vision Enhancement System
to allow surgeons to have true “procedural
choice” by providing the most advanced
technology for both vitreoretinal and cataract
surgery in a single system.
The EPIC Surgery Center is located at
11261 Nall Avenue, Leawood, Kansas, in the
heart of Johnson County, for the convenience
of patients and physicians in the region.

Electronic Health Records Improve Efficiency
Just imagine: you are out of town on a
weekend and you suffer an eye injury that
requires immediate attention. Treating you, the
attending doctor needs to immediately know
certain facets of your medical history to make
the proper diagnosis
and treatment.
Fortunately, your
primary eye doctor is
part of the Sabates
Eye Centers staff
and your entire medical history is all there, in
electronic format, instantly available to send to
the treating physician anywhere in the world.
Electronic Health Records (EHR) are rapidly
becoming the industry standard. Although
many practices and facilities are currently
dealing with the arduous conversion from
paper to EHR, Sabates realized the advantages
early on, and completed the conversion five
years ago.
Electronic Health Records
(EHR) are rapidly becoming
the industry standard.
“It was a very involved procedure when
we made the switch, but it has truly been
worth it,” commented David Galle, Sabates Eye
Centers’ Chief Operating Officer. “Considering
we had 75,000 paper charts on file and had to

physically retain all of those medical
records, just the space savings alone has
been enormous.”
Beyond the obvious elimination of
cumbersome files, EHR offers several
other advantages. As in the case above,
a complete medical history can be
transmitted to any physician instantly
and, no matter which of the many
Sabates offices you visit, your complete
record is always available to the staff
that sees you.
Furthermore, most images can
be viewed in 3-D, a great aid to the
attending physician’s ability to see and
diagnose the situation. All current medications,
allergies, medical history and their dates of
occurrence are listed in typeface, without
having to decipher another doctor’s
handwriting. All insurance carriers and
providers are listed as well, reducing the time
needed to query the patient on these issues.
Dr. Michael Cassell, EHR Committee
Chairman commented, “the EHR system
has proved its worth many times over. The
reduction in time and wasted procedures,
combined with the increased accuracy of
diagnoses, has resulted in an advancement in
the level of patient care.” And as we say…
“That’s the way it should be.”

Sabates Offers Greater Precision with All Laser LASIK® Method
Always at the forefront of the
newest and most advanced technology,
Sabates Eye Centers is thrilled to
announce we are now offering All
Laser LASIK or IntraLase® method with
our LASIK procedures. In traditional
LASIK procedure, a blade is used to create the corneal
flap—the critical first step to performing a successful
corrective surgery. The IntraLase® method, however,
utilizes rapid pulses of laser light to create the corneal
flap and is 100% blade free. This technology gives your
surgeon greater precision, allowing them
to tailor the flap to every dimension of your
eye. Because of this, many patients who
were not considered viable candidates for
LASIK in the past may find they are now able
to have the procedure. The precision of the
IntraLase® method results in better patient
outcomes with faster recovery, fewer flap-related
complications and better post-operative results. This
technology upgrade will serve to enhance our current
custom LASIK procedures and includes computerized iris
registration at the time of surgery. To learn more and
to determine if you are a candidate for All Laser LASIK,
consult with your SEC physician.
Patients Making a Difference
Diagnosed seven years ago with
advanced childhood glaucoma, Emily
Mallette is a not your typical teenager. But
it’s not glaucoma that sets this 15 year old
apart as much as it is her ambition to help
find a cure for the disease.
With the help of her sisters (they
are identical triplets) and a good friend,
Emily began a campaign called “Never
Lose Sight” to raise awareness and funds
to support glaucoma research. The group
6 — SABATES EYE CENTERS
sells “Never Lose Sight” t-shirts and
bracelets, with all the proceeds going
to glaucoma research. Their efforts
have already raised $1000, which was
presented to SEC Dr. Rohit Krishna,
Emily’s physician. In April, Emily and
her “Never Lose Sight” team had the
opportunity to visit the Vision Research
Center for a Q&A with Director of
Research, Peter Koulen, PhD. During
the visit, the girls learned more about
ongoing glaucoma research as well as
prospects for the future.
Gentry Miller, Miss Kansas 2012, is passionate
about building awareness of glaucoma. Her work
as a territory manager for Allergan’s eye care
division cultivated her interest in the disease.
Proving to be both hardworking and dedicated
toward achieving her goals, Gentry graduated
Summa Cum Laude from the University of Kansas
where she was actively involved in numerous
academic honor societies, advisory boards and
sorority. Gentry brings such drive to raising
glaucoma awareness through her pageant
platform. She also looks toward continued work
as an advocate for the visually impaired and is
presently involved with volunteer work at the
Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired.
We are extremely proud of and inspired
by the work these ladies are doing in support
of glaucoma awareness and we wish them
continued success. To learn more about
“Never Lose Sight,” visit their community

patient… if they don’t have passion, they practice somewhere else. These
doctors are exemplary of the skilled professionals that embrace our
philosophy to deliver the highest quality care with compassion and skill.
With their appointments, we now have not just specialists, but
fellowship-trained sub-specialists in every ophthalmic discipline. These

glaucoma, advanced cataract procedures, surgery and lens replacement,
macular degeneration, ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive procedures,
pediatric ophthalmology, corneal diseases and surgery, neuroophthalmology, ocular oncology and advanced refractive procedures.
With their combined roles as physicians, teachers and researchers,
our doctors make us one of the largest groups of fellowship-trained
