Welcome to the Sports Guide of the K.U.Leuven University Sports Centre. In this guide you will find all the information
you need to have a sporting academic year. The only condition is that you have a sports card
(for a year or for a day: see p.2).
We offer a wide sporting gamma of 60 different sports, for students,
staff and others; both for the beginner as the top-level athlete.
This range of sports is
organized by the University
Sports Centre of K.U. Leuven.
In cooperation with LOKOsport the University Sports Centre
wants to point out the sport policy of the university; not only on
a regional, but also on a national and an international level.
The executive board of the USC is the Sports Secretariat. There you
can buy sports - and fitness cards, enrol for courses and get all kinds
of information.
It is located in the entrance hall of the De Nayer Building,
Tervuursevest 101, 3001 Heverlee. You can also contact the
secretariat by phone (016/32.91.30) or on [email protected].
If you are (more) interested in sport in a more 'student-like'
atmosphere (like interfaculty competition, participate in the famous
24 hours run or running the 21km), we are sure you will find
your niche at LOKO-sport! You can find them in Building De Nayer
room 00.57.
We wish you a successful and sporting academic year and hope to
see you soon at our University Sports Centre!

FREE TRY-OUT!
Are you interested? Just drop by and try it! Reserve your personalized
introduction session at Univ-Fit (016/32.91.42). During this fitnessinitiation you will get to know everything about the way we work. With an
instructor you will take a look (and try) all of the machines and together
you will talk about the basic training schedule. If you like it, you can go to
the Sports Secretariat and buy a fitness card. You‘re ready to go for the
first five sessions with your basic programme! After these sessions, you
will have cardio and power-tests to figure out your condition. Based on
these tests and your personal goals, the instructor will make for you a
personalised and adapted training-programme. Every fifteen sessions, we
will evaluate your progress and (if necessary) adapt your programme.
FITNESS FOR EVERYBODY!
The advantage of fitness is that nobody is too young or too old. If there is
a personal guidance and a flexible approach, fitness is a healthy and useful
activity for everybody. The proof of our flexibility and customer–related
policy is the range in our members; professors, students, staff, elderly …
everybody will find his/her way to work out at Univ-fit!

DO YOU FEEL LIKE PLAYING SOCCER WITH YOUR
ROOMMATES OR VOLLEYBALL WITH YOUR
NEIGHBOURS? YOU WANT TO PLAY TENNIS WITH YOUR
(GIRL/BOY) FRIEND, OR PRACTISE BASKETBALL FOR
THE INTERFACULTY COMPETITION WITH YOUR TEAM?
NO PROBLEM!
All you need to do is call 016/32.91.30, mail [email protected] or drop
by the Sports secretariat (Tervuursevest 101, 3001 Heverlee). We will
help you to find a time slot when the sports area you like is available.
You can book the sports fields and halls up to 14 days in advance.
Before you start playing you have to bring the sports (or day) cards of
all the players to the doorkeeper!
If you want to play tennis or beachvolley, you can only make bookings
1 day in advance (exception: on Fridays you can book for the weekend
and the following Monday). Every player must have a sports card!
For beachvolley you hand over the sports cards of all the players (min. 4)
to the doorkeeper, in exchange you will receive the beachvolley net and
the lines. People who don’t have a sports card have to buy a day ticket!
PRICE
If you and your team mates have a valid sports card, everything is … for free!
For indoor tennis you will pay an extra fee of €10.00/hour.
A WHOLE YEAR
If you want to make use of a sports facility on a regular basis (every week)
at a fixed time, you have to make a request by email. Tell us who you are,
which sport you want to practise, when you want to do so and with how
many people you want to come. Please send your demands before
October 14th 2011 to [email protected]. Reservations on a regular basis
are only possible till the Easter holiday period.

RUNNING TRACK”.
ockers
IF YOU ARE A REGULAR VISITOR AT
THE UNIVERSITY SPORTS CENTRE, WE
RECOMMEND YOU TO RENT A LOCKER
TO STORE YOUR CLOTHES AND
VALUABLES TO PREVENT ANY THEFT.
In both the Gymnasium and in the De Nayer building you have several
options:
• You can rent a locker for one day. It’s free of any charge but you have
to bring your own lock. Be aware that you have to take everything with
you in the evening; otherwise your lock will be removed.
• You can rent a locker in BDN for a whole academic year. You have to
pay €4,00 at the doorkeeper and bring your own lock.
• You can rent a locker for one day. You don't have to bring your own
lock, but you insert a €1,00 coin. When you've finished you just take
your bags and your coin will be returned. Again: this is only for one day,
so please empty the locker in the evening or your stuff will be removed.
As you see, lots of options for using a locker. Please use them, we want
to help you to prevent theft!
The track with a length of 1 km was constructed through
the University Sports Centre. The soft, resilient and
absorbent layer not only provides a pleasant feeling while
running but also reduces the load on tendons and joints!
Note: Also for running, you must have a sports card!

The treatment of sports injuries demands a professional approach
whether you are a jogger, tennis player, a professional soccer
player or competitive long distance runner.
The SMAC is home to all people dealing with sport injuries as well
for all questions concerning the prevention, diagnosis and treatment
of chronic and acute sport injuries. It is possible to perform a
sport medical test for so called more dangerous sports or for health
reasons.
The specific rehabilitation of sport injuries,
after having surgery or not, can take place at the well equipped
sport physiology department.
The SMAC is localised at the

OKO-Sport
LOKO-SPORT IS A SECTION OF LOKO
(THE COORDINATING ORGANISATION OF FACULTY
STUDENT ORGANISATIONS IN LEUVEN).
LOKO-Sport is a section of LOKO (the coordinating organisation of faculty
student organisations in Leuven). Our goal is to motivate students in Leuven
to take part in sporting activities. The best known activities are our classics,
which are organised in Leuven by the students themselves and are our
highlights of the year. Almost every student has attended the 24-hours relay
race to run at least one lap or played in the IFB-cup (an intramural
competition between all student organisations and dormitories).
These FUNtastic events will all take place this academic year as well.
You will find all the necessary information on our website.
Our main activities
24-HOUR RELAY RACE: 25 AND 26 OCTOBER 2011
This is the best known and largest event organised by students in Belgium.
About 20 teams, mainly student organisations, work hard and train for weeks
in the run-up to this unique and thrilling relay race which, as the name
indicates, lasts 24 hours. For this occasion the university sports centre is
transformed into a festive and sporting party venue. The teams not only
compete on the track, they also try to surpass their opponents and win the
competition for the best construction or most delicious dish or refreshment.
With music and hi-tech entertainment provided around the clock,
even non-athletes can get involved. It has become one of the high-points
of the academic year in Leuven for the student population.
WEDNESDAY SPORTS FEVER: EVERY WEDNESDAY
We support and coordinate all sport
activities organised by the various
student organisations. As it is also the
main goal of LOKO, LOKO-Sport works
for the democratisation of sporting events
for students in Leuven. Every student
should be able to take part in sporting
events, therefore we subsidise the sporting
activities of all student organisations.
Wednesday Sports Fever is organized in cooperation with KHLeuven and
K.U.Leuven by students for students. With this sports project we want to give
students the opportunity to get an introduction in a not so famous sport.
From the beginning of October every student can participate for free (you just
need a sporting card) on this weekly organized sports evening (afternoon).
Each Wednesday we offer you another sport such as capoeira, diving,
urban golf, fencing and kayak.
Subscribing for each activity
is necessary because
the places are limited.
More information about
the activities and
subscriptions can be
found in the centerfold
of this guide or on
our website:
http://sport.loko.be.
To guarantee that the two goals are achieved, we meet every week in our
Work Assembly. The Work Assembly consists not only of representatives of
the student organisations, but also of volunteer students as well as nonstudents. If you want to join us in our battle to make Leuven students more
sports minded, feel free to attend our Work Assembly and to become a
member of LOKO-Sport. Feel free to contact us by mail or visit our office in
the “De Nayer”-Building room 00.57.
HOW DO WE WORK?
Our main goal is to encourage students to intensify their sporting habits.
To achieve these goals LOKO-Sport:
• organises competitions in various sports, tournaments and mass
sporting events
• works to popularise student sports
• supports activities organised by student organisations
• defends the interests of the students concerning sports by all means and
in various committees
• subsidises the more expensive sports to make them more available for
all students
• organises a lending service for sports equipment

ICUC: INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR UNIVERSITIES AND
COLLEGES 29/03 - 01/04/2012
The International Championship for Universities and Colleges', or ICUC,
is the latest initiative in collaboration with LOKO-Sport, LOKOInternational, LOKO-Culture, K.U.Leuven and the American University
of Paris (AUP). Together, we want to organize an international sports
circus at the K.U.Leuven University Sports Centre. Sports, social
integration and bonding are the advantages of this project. Do you
feel like uniting with your international friends, participating this
event and measure yourself with the multicultural participants?
Further information will follow, so be sure to keep an eye on the
website at the start of the academic year!
STUDENT MARATHON: 14 MARCH 2012
The student marathon has three versions: 5km, 10km & 21 km. A very
nice route is chosen each year, on rural roads and through beautifully
rolling landscapes, sometimes traversing the town centre. This is one
of the most popular and well known activities organized by LOKOSport and it is very popular not only among students, but among
university staff members and outsiders as well.
INTERFACULTY CUP 2011-2012
During the months November, December, February and March the
preliminary rounds of the Interfaculty Cup will take place. IFB, as it is
known in Flemish, is a competition between the various faculties of
the university. Competition is held for both male and female in four
sports: volleyball, basketball, outdoor soccer and indoor soccer.
The climax takes place on the finals day, when the best teams clash
and offer exciting games and an impressive show of talent, the finals
day will be on the 16th of May 2012.
Adventure Night Raid - Association Sports Day
WEDNESDAY MARCH 21ST, 2012 – UNIVERSITY SPORTS
CENTRE K.U.LEUVEN, HEVERLEE
The second edition of the Adventure Night Raid will be organized
on Wednesday March 21st, 2012. Every student of the
Association K.U.Leuven is allowed to attend this Association
Sports Day. This is not just a sports day! During this Adventure
Night Raid, every team has to beat sportsmanlike records,
to reach adventurous instructions and to solve complicated
brain teasers.

B
ike & Run
ON WEDNESDAY 2 MAY 2012 K.U. LEUVEN
AND UCL ORGANISE THE 10TH EDITION
OF THEIR BIKE&RUN!
You can try to travel the 32km that separate the two ancient universities
in 2 different ways
• as a couple - 1 runner + 1 biker (as mentioned above)
• as a single runner
As the title indicates, we are looking for runners and cyclists. In this event,
you can combine both of these sports. As a couple you can participate,
one as a cyclist and the other as a runner. Along the track, you can change
functions as you like.
This year the start (2pm) will be in the ‘Centre Sportif de Blocry’,
the beating heart of sportive Louvain-la-Neuve, the finish is located in our
own University Sports Centre in Leuven. A beautiful track will guide you
from Louvain-la-Neuve to Leuven, as we try to make it as green as
possible. Through the fields in the region of Bossut and Doiceau, we cross
‘Meerdaelwoud’ and ‘Heverleebos’, two forests that lie between
both cities.
Wherever we cross any street, we provide people making your passage
as safe as possible or we work with police officers.
We offer you a nice warm shower afterwards, a reception and several prices!!
As usual we take care of transportation of your bikes, clothes, etc…
If you’re into sports and like to be out in a green environment, this is really
what you’re after!

PHYSICAL COACHING
Is “more exercise / sports" one of the items on your unfinished
to-do list? Or do you need that extra push to move from words to
activity? Do you need a “personalised an adapted programme and
would you like the advice of a personal coach?”
If you want to work on a more active lifestyle and want to have some
help from a skilled person, do not hesitate and subscribe for one of
the personal coaches of the University Sports Centre!
The coaching consists of:
• A personal interview with the coach about your exercise history,
your exercise preferences, your capabilities and goals ....
During this interview he/she will develop a personal exercise plan.
• The coach will follow you regularly, put you on your way, answer
questions, adjust your exercise plan with you and will motivate
you to persevere.
Note:
• This physical coaching is aimed at K.U.Leuven staff members
who are “insufficient physically active”. The project is not
designed for performance or competitive athletes.
• The physical coach aims to motivate you for a more physically
active lifestyle, wants to learn you how to move in a correct way.
You also need to have a sports card (for a year (€30), or for the
summer holidays (€15,00) or for five days (€10)). Insurance is
always included!

INDOOR ATHLETICS IN OUR UNIVERSITY SPORT

35 YEARS.
Annually, in cooperation with DCLA (the track and field club of
Leuven), we organise an indoor meeting in the big hall of the

compete in most indoor disciplines, such as high jump, long jump,

T
able tennis tournament
8th of December 2011! That’s when you can show everyone
who’s the best table tennis player of K.U.Leuven and its
surroundings. That day we organise the Flemish and Belgian
table tennis championships for students! All competitors meet
each other in a big handicap tournament. In this kind of
tournament we give a player with a lower rank a benefit in points
so it should be possible for him or her to beat the higher
ranked opponent.
Lots of tension and spectacular play guaranteed!

IT ISN’T EASY TO COMBINE HIGHER EDUCATION AND
A TOP-LEVEL SPORTS CAREER…
BOTH ARE DEMANDING AND IF YOU WANT TO MAKE
THE BEST OF BOTH, YOU’LL OFTEN FIND YOURSELF
FACED WITH DILEMMAS!
That’s why K.U.Leuven has elaborated a wide range of facilities for student
athletes. All starts with getting a ‘student athlete statute’.
We stipulated the following criteria for students who want to apply for
a statute:
YOU SHOULD BE:
• an athlete, recognized by the Olympic Committee of your country
or/and
• selected on a regular base for the national team in your discipline
or/and
• a regular participant in international competitions in your discipline
or/and
• a member of a team in the highest division or/and
• recognized by your own sports federation as a promising athlete or as
one of the top five in your sport or/and
• eligible or selected for participation at the Universiade or World
University Championships
Students who compete in the highest division, the number of training
hours as well as being selected for the starting line-up is taken into
account when the student athlete statute is being considered.
For all those who are recognised as student athletes, the examination
regulations at K.U.Leuven provide 'exceptional regulations for special
groups' (art. 122), with the possibility of:
• spreading out exams from the beginning of the examination period
in January until the end of the examination period in July (and if
necessary until the end of the examination period in September)
• re-scheduling examination dates
• part-time study or spreading one or more academic year over multiple
years
• tolerance of absence at lectures, seminars or lab sessions in order to
participate in practices or competitions
• finding solutions for missed lectures, seminars or lab sessions
Next to the academic privileges, we also offer sport-related facilities:
• use of the facilities of the University Sports Centre
• guidance in specific training sessions
Also on a medical level, student athletes can rely on a high quality service
at K.U.Leuven. As well for medical surveillance as for rehabilitation,
we have a specified medical staff. For surveillance, you can rely on
the ABC-top level sports centre. Here, some of Belgium finest sports men
and women are daily customers, which indicates the high level of
professionalism in this centre. They can provide you with guidance in
aerobic endurance training, testing, nutrition… If you should get injured,
our Sports Medical Advice Centre has some of the very best
physiotherapists that can help you to regain your form and allow you to
get to a competitive level as soon as possible.

WHO ENJOYS EXERCISING TO THE SOUNDS OF

The first part of the lesson is a heavy warming-up, followed by
exercises for specific muscle groups. Music of different hit parades
keeps you in the correct rhythm, the teacher is taking part enthusiastic
and corrects all movements. Slowly your heartrythm will bring up to
the dancing part, a gradual finish in the cooling-down is followed by a
stretching in the last ten minutes. After an hour of dance-aerobic you'll

CLASSICAL BALLET IS A VERY SPORTIVE ART OF
DANCE AT WHICH IS WORKED ON BODY ATTITUDE,
STRENGTH, COORDINATION, BODY CONTROL AND
MUSICALITY. YOU DON’T NEED TO BE A BALLERINA
TO DO BALLET!
The lessons are composed of three parts. During the first part you work
at the barre. The extra stability allows you to do the exercises as well as
possible. During the second part you have to do it all on you own and you
work without the barre. Movement is now more emphasized. During the
classes there will be special attention on the technique and learning to
use this during the dancing.

Whereas the exercises ensure a safe and effective training, music
ensures pleasure and motivation. For this reason you can’t think of
them separately while performing body pump. Thus each muscle
group has its own number, every bit of music belongs to a movement
and sets the pace. This ensures an entirely new perception which is
unique for body power! During training all muscle groups are taken
into consideration. Most of the exercises are carried out with a special
tool, called ‘barbell‘. The weight of these barbells can be chosen by
setting the right disk. This also is a large advantage of body power:
everyone can stipulate its own weight, and therefore beginners and
advanced can participate simultaneously. Beside the barbell, a small
bench is also used, on which exercises are carried out lying down.
During body power, exercises have lots of repetitions with a relative
low weight. The training has been therefore aimed at muscle
strengthening, weight loss and maintaining muscle mass. Body power
is suitable for everyone!
We will make a difference
between two groups: the
more advanced dancers,
this means already 5-10
years experience in ballet
(NOT BEGINNERS) and those
with more then 10 years
experience are expected.
If you are enthusiastic,

The end result is that you can lose yourself in a mix of

choreography. Because we work in groups of different
levels, it is possible to work within each persons abilities

BASED ON EXPRESSIONS AND EMOTIONS THIS CLASS
WILL FOCUS ON MODERN DANCE TECHNIQUES SUCH AS
CONTRACT-RELEASEMOVEMENTS AND FLOORWORK.
Modern dance arose from a reaction against the academic ballet with
founders such as Martha Graham, José Limón, Lester Horton, Merce
Cunningham and many more. Modern dance focuses on expression,
where body movements, ideas and emotions are central.
In these classes we will pursue a technical development as well as en
improvement in empathy and a transfer of emotions.
Every class exists of 2 parts. In the first part technical modern dance
elements will be introduced in different exercises. Afterwards we apply
these techniques in a dance combination with focus on transfer of
movements. For several weeks we build on a combination so it’s best
not to miss any classes!
L
We will work in three levels:
• Beginners (A): those who hasn't any dance-experience, we try to
give you movements and basic techniques for authentic jazz dance.
• Middle group (B): the basic skills are known, the emphasis will be
placed to a totally awakening and development of your expertise.
• Advanced (C): at this level,
we shift the accent to quality
and better results, competence
and perception.
In these classes we dance on
socks (or barefoot). Make sure
you wear comfortable clothing
that doesn’t limit your
movements.

ack in action
SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OBVIOUSLY HAVE A
POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON OUR HEALTH.
This means that a good physical condition can be very important,
especially when you consider that 80% of the population will suffer from
lower back pain at least once in their life, generally caused by poor
physical condition. Anyone who has ever been confronted with discomfort
or pain in the lower back region will know how important it is to train in
a back-friendly way. With 'back in action', we provide a one-hour support
programme where the safety of your back is paramount.
To practise this sport, both beginners and veterans have a lot of
facilities at their disposal: for sprinting, hurdling, high jumping, broad
jumping, triple jumping, pole vault, discus throw, javelin, hammer
throw, etc. We even have some indoor equipment. If you want to borrow
any equipment, contact the doorkeeper in the 'De Nayer' building.
Tuesdays are reserved specifically for competitors (7pm-9pm) together
with the university team. The surroundings of the sports centre provide
lots of opportunity for jogging and cross-country. We gather each
weekday at the entrance to the 'De Nayer' building at 4.30pm.

In addition, you can be certain that the specially adapted exercises
will have a positive and strengthening influence. This course is for
everybody who would like to train in a back-friendly way, as both a
preventive measure and a healing activity.
In the beginners group we teach all the exercises and try to improve
your condition (gradually), with an emphasis on a back-friendly
technique. Once you have passed the beginners level you can join
the medium or advanced level (it is only possible to sign up for these
groups if you have finished the beginners group). You can find the

FENCING IS AN ACTIVITY THAT EVOLVED FROM
PREPARATION FOR A DUEL TO AN OLYMPIC SPORT.
Fencing is an activity that evolved from
preparation for a duel to an Olympic
sport. The purpose of the game
consists in acquiring the proper skills
in handling and controlling a weapon,
together with improving your reflexes.
Only by becoming a master over your
blade, you can hit your opponent in a duel. Fencing can be practised
with three weapons: sable, epee or foil. If you built up the basic skills
in handling a foil, you can go many way: either becoming a master in
foil fencing or switching to another weapon. Therefore in the initiation
lessons, we consider foil as the primary weapon of choice. As the fencer
evolves, we can let him get a taste of sable or epee!

LUAC - the LEUVENSE Universitaire AERO-CLUB vzw - has two faces: on the
one hand it's the university gliding club, but at the same time it is also the "local"
gliding club of the city of Leuven. This means that the club is open to all sorts
of members: students (university and non-university), former students, university
staff, anyone living around Leuven, or just people who feel good in our group.
Every autumn we start an introductory winter course (given in Dutch) which is
open to anyone, for a modest fee. This course provides essential theoretical
background knowledge for those who decide to start taking flying lessons in
the spring. We welcome foreign students. However, if you are interested in
becoming a member, please note the following: all written and oral
communication in the club is in Dutch: regulations, instructions, procedures,
flight instruction, theoretical courses, etc. We have to work as a team, and for
flight safety reasons, it is of paramount importance that all members are fully
conversant in the Dutch language, at least in terms of reading and
understanding it (a few years ago we had an accident in which insufficient
knowledge of the Dutch language was a contributing factor. Since then,
we apply this rule very strictly.)

EVERYBODY WHO HAS A HEART FOR THESE NOBLE ANIMALS IS
WELCOME, AS A RIDER, FAN OR JUST AS A SPECTATOR.
Taking part doesn’t mean learning how to ride better, but also meeting a lot of
students who are, just like you, fascinated by horses. We choose for an individual
approach, which means we are not riding a whole lesson one after another.
Therefore, the number of participants is limited to 10 riders in each group.
The lessons for the semi-advanced and advanced groups are organised on Wednesday
evening at 9pm. On Thursday evening at 9pm, a beginners class is organised.
All lessons take place at the riding school Meerdaalhof (Oud-Heverlee).
Beginners: do not have any (or few) experience with horseback riding. You will be
taught how to saddle the horse and learn the basic things on the technical level.
Semi-advanced: are able to saddle a horse and know how to walk, (rising and
sitting) trot and (the basics of) canter. Advanced: are able to saddle their horse
and know how to walk, trot and canter. This group will concentrate on advancing
technically. Dressage and jumping will be included during the lessons. The price
is € 110,00 for 10 lessons. Enrolment for the sessions will take place at the sports
office starting from Monday 26 of September. Sports card obliged.

JUDO (JAPANESE NAME FOR THE 'SMOOTH
WAY') IS A LIFE-LONG SPORT.
Young and strong people, children and the elderly, practise this
sport, with appropriate coaching. In the introductory sessions,
the accent is on the falling exercises. The mat seems hard at
first, but after some practice it feels (a bit) like a soft bed.
After you master this technique, we start with throwing and
holding techniques. If you are more competitive, then you should
come to the team practice sessions.

KARATE IS A MARTIAL ART THAT USES THE
NATURAL WEAPONS OF THE HUMAN BODY.
SHAO-LIN KUNG FU IS ONE OF THE MOST
FAMOUS MARTIAL ARTS IN CHINA WITH A VERY
LONG HISTORY.
It strengthens all muscle groups by dynamic reaction movements.
It also develops specific coordination, dexterity and flexibility.
As a competitive sport it not only develops your power, speed and
courage, but also (and especially) self-control and respect for the
opponent. The normal training sessions are for everybody (beginners
and advanced alike). The extra competition training sessions are
only for karatekas who are selected on the basis of fixed criteria.
If you meet these criteria you can be a member of the university
team. The karate style we offer for the beginners is WADO RYU.
People who prefer other styles within the club have the possibility
to do their own kata exercises. Twice a year we organize
examinations to succeed into a higher level. You're free to come
for both days. During the holidays we also
have training sessions

There are many different disciplines and styles e.g. the PreyingMantis Style, Long-Fist and Northern Shao-Lin ground kung fu.
Some of the movements of Shao-Lin are imitations of animals,
for example, monkeys, swallows, herons, lions, praying-mantises,
etc. Three hundred years ago, Mister Wang Lang was fascinated
by the attack techniques of the preying-mantis and used this
inspiration to create the Preying-Mantis Style. The course is
divided into three different levels. The first level will focus on the
basic techniques, elementary defence techniques and relaxation
exercises. These techniques will help you to get a more flexible
body. Endurance and strength are the main themes. Depending on
your figure, personality and progress, you will be split into two
different groups at the second level. Each group will learn another
style: Preying-Mantis or Long-Fist. The advanced group at the
third level can choose
between Northern ShaoLin ground kung fu,
Drunken Style, Monkey

A CLASS OF PILATES EXISTS OUT OF A
COMBINATION OF STRENGTH ENHANCING
EXERCISES, STABILITY EXERCISES AND
RELAXATION EXERCISES.
It’s not the quantity of the exercises but the quality of
the performance that matters. Control and correct
performance are key concepts in pilates. Breathing
and consciousness to make the right muscles work
are the base of every exercise. The result of exercising
pilates are longer muscles, more flexibility and a
balanced body.
All materials that will be used are at your disposition.
To ensure correct performance of the exercises this
class allows a maximum of 15 people.

USING THE POWER ROOM IS RESERVED
SPECIFICALLY FOR ATHLETES WHO TRAIN
AND ARE COMPETITIVE AT HIGH LEVEL.
Sportsmen who are interested to excercise in the power room
can apply for it by sending a mail to Univ-Fit. They will be invited

entrance will be given to the power room or not.
After approval, one has to buy a fitness card (see p.4), which will
both give access to Univ-Fit and the power room (~ power card)
during the scheduled hours (see door power room). In consultation
with the responsible one can be allowed to train outside the
scheduled hours (only allowed when a second athlete is present).
Note: Before entering the power room, one gives the fitness/
power card to the doorkeeper who will open the door.
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday led trainings
are provided. This led training is no group lesson or initiation in

elf-defence
SELF-DEFENCE INVOLVES DEFENDING YOUR OWN
BODY, NOT ATTACKING.
First you've got to do everything you can to avoid conflict or
aggression. Talking to and just walking away from the aggressor
will help in most cases. If this does not help, however, then (and
only then) can you use self-defence techniques to neutralise an
attack. With this in mind, we focus on some key points that will
return in all the sessions.
1. Every fight avoided is a fight won.
2. If you have to use violence yourself, you have to use it in
proportion to the attack.
In addition to training the basic skills (power, flexibility, speed,
etc.) we'll exercise a few specific skills like falling, warding off
physical contact, strangleholds, hitting, immobilising the
aggressor through holds, arm leg and pulse holds, and throwing
techniques. The didactical and methodological focus is on training
in a 'controlled' way; the safety of the partner is of prime
importance.
cuba-diving
SCUBA-DIVING IS A FASCINATING SPORT,
A CHALLENGE FOR PEOPLE WITH A SENSE FOR
RESPONSIBILITY.
A systematic course in
a closed environment
(swimming pool), will
teach you all you
need to know about
underwater movement
and will give you the
opportunity to spend a

pelunking
SPELUNKING IS LIKE DIVING, CLIMBING,
KAYAKING, ETC. A NATURE SPORT, BUT GETS
LESS ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTY
OF FILMING IT.
It is a complete all-round sport; involving crawling through
tunnels, climbing on rock faces, swimming in underground
rivers, getting lost (for a few minutes) in a 3D maze, and much
more. We teach the most important techniques during our
training sessions on Wednesday from 8pm to 10pm, but the
best practice occurs outdoors! Each month we go into the caves
at least twice. We plan these extras each week at 10pm on
Wednesday at Minderbroedersstraat 50, 3000 Leuven.

the year we organise guided practice in individual sports and

sports. Our offer is established in cooperation with CAS (Centrum

organisation as they also organise competition in other sports
than those in our offer like sailing, diving …

TABLE TENNIS, CONTRARY TO POPULAR
BELIEF, WAS FOUNDED BY THE ENGLISH,
AND IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY
PRACTISED SPORTS IN THE WORLD.
China and Korea still have the best players, but the
Europeans are improving rapidly. Belgium also plays a role
in the international table-tennis world. In the southern part
of Belgium it has become the third most-practised sport.
Table tennis combines technique, reaction speed,
concentration, tactical insight and perseverance. A mix you
need for almost every sport. During the introductory
sessions (ground floor) we'll put the accent on basic
technique and movement, but we won't forget the game.
During the training sessions of the university team (1st floor)
we focus on tactics and movement.

WHAT IS YOGA? A LOT OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCE TENSION
AND PRESSURE IN THEIR DAILY LIFE.
It is important that those people know how to shut themselves out of
this chaos and to come at ease with themselves. The goal of Yoga is to
come at ease and to find harmony in our lives. In Sanskrit, Yoga refers
to the unity of body and mind, to bring balance between the different
opposites: work and rest, tension and relaxation, fatigue and vitality.
The offered sessions include:
•
•
•
•
Several preparation exercises to make the body flexible
Death position (total relaxation)
Asanas (physical condition)
Pranayamas (breathing exercises)
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF YOGA?
Firstly, Yoga is not a competitive sport. The primary goal is to create
flexibility. While performing Yoga exercises, muscles get stretched in
the length. The fat around the cells disappears and the exercises
combined with a good respiration stimulate the circulation of blood and
the excretion of damaging substances. Due to stretching and breathing
exercises, Yoga decreases tension and therefore it is an ideal way to
learn to relax.
We have limited places for this course, so you have to
enrol at the Sports Secretariat.

This sport is played with 8 persons in a team, always four men and four

a wide range of benefits: diverse movement patterns, space and healthy
air outside, a high speed that makes the sport spectacular, not to mention
the fact that men and women play together. Moreover, it is good exercise
and requires some technique for the different throwing and scoring
movements. Because it is based on natural movement patterns, it is

Try to convince yourself that this sport is based on swimming
condition, ball handling and skill in the water. The best way
to find out is to try it! Every body should have a sports card
and should have normal swimming experience. The beginners
will have their training session at 6pm until 7pm. and the
more advanced will train from 7pm until 8.30pm. The best
players will be selected for the university team. Each year
we participate in the Flemish and Belgian
university championships.

WEDNESDAY SPORTS FEVER IS ORGANIZED BY STUDENTS FOR STUDENTS. WITH THIS SPORTS PROJECT
WE WANT TO GIVE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET AN INTRODUCTION IN A NOT SO FAMOUS SPORT.
From the beginning of October every student can participate for free (you just need a sports card) on this weekly organized sports evening
(afternoon). Each Wednesday we offer you another sport such as capoeira, diving, urban, golf, fencing and kayak. Subscribing for each activity
is necessary because the places are limited. Enrolment and more information about the activities can be found on the website:
