FISCAL REPORT 2010-2011
From the desk of Fr. David
Howdy and thank you for your support of St. Mary’s. When I look back over the last year,
I have two reactions: (1) Wow! I don’t know where the time went but it sure went fast; (2)
I’m glad that God is on our side because none of this would have been possible without his
help—and much of that help comes through your prayers and financial support.
The year got off to a BIG start with the largest Welcome Weekend retreat for incoming
freshmen and transfer students ever—225 retreaters. This year we are offering the retreat
twice because we just can’t fit any more students in the Activity Center. Thank you and please
thank your pastors for publicizing the retreat. Word-of-mouth and parish bulletins are how incoming students find out about us.
We also started the last school year with 100 of our student ministry leaders gathering for a leadership development workshop.
We were also blessed by the participation of students and staff from three other Catholic campus ministry programs. They came
to learn how St. Mary’s forms student leaders, and wanted to take this knowledge back to their campuses.
Another blessing over the last year was a Longhorn in our midst. Kevin Jackson, a seminarian from the Austin Diocese, spent
his pastoral year with us. He quickly adjusted to Aggie ways, and we quickly learned to love this “enemy” very much. We’ll
miss him!
Well, I’ve written a bit, but just covered the first few days before school started! Please see the rest of the report for more news.
One final note—because I know you all care about the future of the Catholic Church. Ten Aggies will enter the seminary or
begin formation for religious orders this fall. Through your prayers and financial support to St. Mary’s, you gave them a place
where they could hear and answer God’s call. Thank you! Gig ‘em Aggie Catholics! 

Former CSA President Enters Formation for the Jesuits
Everybody knew Tucker Redding ’06 during his time at Texas A&M University! Tucker
was elected president of the Catholic Students Association (CSA) and was employed
by St. Mary’s, first in the parking lot and later in the Development Office. As much as
he loved his student jobs, Tucker’s true passion was retreat ministry, and he led many
retreats as a member of St. Mary’s Youth Retreat Team (SMYRT). After graduation, Tucker
accepted a job as the youth minister of St. Justin Martyr Parish in Houston, led retreats
for Catholic high schools, taught a retreat training class for the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston, and served on planning teams for archdiocesan retreats. Tucker, along with
other former SMYRT members, established Resonate Ministries Inc., a non-profit retreat
ministry. It seems that God may have still other plans for “our” Tucker. This fall he will
begin formation for the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Expressing his appreciation for Aggie
Catholic campus ministry, Tucker said, “I could never have imagined that my involvement
at St. Mary’s would lead me down this path. I am grateful to all the benefactors who made
this journey possible.” Wherever this adventure leads, we send our prayers and support! 
Aggie Sisters Make First Vows
Sister Amata Filia (Laura Dierschke ’04) made her first vows as a Sister of Life in August
2010. In addition to poverty, chastity and obedience, her community makes a fourth vow
to protect and enhance the sacredness of life. Sister Rose Marie of the Merciful Heart of
Jesus (Shannon Schoppe ’07) made her first vows as a Passionist Nun on July 1. The vows
of the Passionists are to promote devotion and grateful remembrance of the passion of
Jesus, chastity, poverty, obedience and enclosure. 

Apostles of the Interior Life Sisters Bearing Witness to Christ
Sisters Reach Out to Young Women on Timely Topics
During the spring semester, St. Mary’s Apostles of the Interior Life Sisters led three evening discussions on topics
of interest to women in college. The topics were: relationships with men; self and body image; and purity and
modesty.
To keep the atmosphere casual, the discussions were held in two locations, their convent home and the common area
of a dorm. The evening began with an informal presentation by one of the sisters, followed by an open discussion on
the topic.
Carolyn Leatherman ‘12 explained that the program allowed Catholic women to meet in an open, relaxed and trusting
environment, “We were able to share our struggles and life experiences, while affirming and helping each other
understand what it means to be a woman of God.” 

Social Ministry Spreading the Gospel Through Service
Student organizations sponsored by St. Mary’s make
service to others a priority. It would be impossible to
list all the good they do for the Catholic Church and the
community. Whether it is participating in Texas A&M’s Big
Event, collecting food for the needy, or donating blood,
you can be sure that Aggie Catholics are involved, and
are even leaders in these efforts. The skills the students
learn in organizing and participating in these projects
goes with them when they graduate—to their parishes,
communities and chosen professions. The following are
just a few of the ways Aggie Catholics have given of
themselves to help others.
Aggies

cleaned up a two-mile
stretch of highway.
 Each week, Aggies Serving Another Person
WHOOP!
(ASAP) organized one or two service outreach
efforts including: working in a soup kitchen,
playing BINGO and praying the rosary with senior
citizens in a nursing home, and helping at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. ASAP also cleaned up a two-mile
stretch of highway.
 Each semester, Aggie Catholics volunteered for the day at Down Home Ranch, a residential, working ranch for
adults and children with Downs Syndrome and other disabilities. The students helped with the preparation of
raised beds for the vegetable garden and prepared spring flower baskets. The most popular service trip was on
Halloween, when 20 students had fun with a cookie-baking competition, a pumpkin race, and carving faces on
the surviving pumpkins.
 Instead of the beach, 11 Aggie Catholics headed for the mission fields
during Spring Break. Accompanied by Aggie Father Charlie Garza ‘02
from San Jose Parish in Austin, they met up with the Missioners of
Christ in Comayagua, Honduras. In addition to working hard on the
trip, the students worked hard to raise the funds for their travel.
 Although Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, there is still much work to
be done in New Orleans. A group of 11 Aggie Catholics spent their
Spring Break helping in the reconstruction effort. 
Hoedown Raises Funds for
Pro-Life Organization
On Saturday, April 2, Kappa Theta Beta (KTB) Catholic
Sorority, Aggie Knights of Columbus Council 10624, and
the Catholic Students Association hosted the 2nd Annual
HOEDOWN fundraiser at St. Anthony Pavilion in Bryan.
Over $5,000 was raised to help the Good Samaritan
Gabriel Project Life Center in Bryan, Texas. Good
Samaritan is a non-profit organization that helps pregnant
women and their families.
Over 500 attended this community event. Local
businesses donated food, and a delicious barbeque meal
was prepared by the Knights. Music to the Cajun beat of
L’Angelus allowed for lots of dancing. 

St. Mary’s Added An Additional Weekend Mass to the Schedule!
o by
Sunday, the “Lord’s Day,” is the principal day for the celebration of the Eucharist because it is the day of the Resurrection. It is the
pre-eminent day of the liturgical assembly, the day of the Christian family, and the day of joy and rest from work. (Catechism of
the Catholic Church 1193)
Mass attendance is up! The bad news (if there can ever be bad news about this) was that the
church and parking lot were filled beyond capacity. Broadcasting Mass into the Hannigan Chapel
(called Holy Vision) and an overflow Mass in the Activity Center on football weekends are no longer
enough to accommodate the crowd. This fall, St. Mary’s is adding an additional weekend Mass, and
adjusting the Mass schedule. Please note the new times listed on page 2. 
Eucharistic Adoration Draws Students
The most appropriate places for prayer are personal or family oratories, monasteries, places of pilgrimage, and above all the
church, which is the proper place for liturgical prayer for the parish community and the privileged place for Eucharistic adoration.
(Catechism of the Catholic Church 2696)
During the school year, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar in the Hannigan Chapel
for 58 hours during the week. Because Jesus must never be left alone during this time, students
sign up to visit the chapel for prayer and contemplation during particular hours. Many others will
“drop-in.” Christina Wilcox ’12 commits to a weekly hour of Eucharistic Adoration, and explained
why, “Adoration is a time for me to reflect and focus on the most important thing, God. The best part of
adoration is when you see someone come into the chapel to pray. This makes me realize that if I hadn’t been there, then
that person would not be able pray before the Blessed Sacrament.” 

Each year the vibrant witness of the Aggie Catholics brings others to the Catholic Church
through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Those seeking to join the Church meet
weekly for prayer and instruction in the faith. They are supported by sponsors, often fellow
students, who help them on their faith journey. In the last year, 57 adults entered the Catholic
Church either through baptism or making a profession of faith as a Catholic. They also received
their first Holy Communion and the sacrament of confirmation. 
Students Complete their Christian Initiation at St. Mary’s
Every baptized person not yet confirmed can and should receive the sacrament of Confirmation. (Catechism of the Catholic Church
1306)
Confirmation is the completion of baptism, the strengthening of baptismal faith, and the special
outpouring of the Holy Spirit with an increase in the Spirit’s gifts. While many Catholics receive
the sacrament during their middle or high school years, some do not. When they reach college,
they seek the graces of this sacrament. Over the past year, St. Mary’s prepared 47 students for
confirmation. 
Confession is Good for the Soul!
For those who receive the sacrament of Penance with contrite heart and religious disposition, reconciliation is usually followed by
peace and serenity of conscience with strong spiritual consolation. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1468)
The sacrament of reconciliation is offered at ten scheduled times during the week and all day on
Monday—and the lines can still get long. Aggies are not bigger sinners, just good Catholics! 

Aggie Awakening An Enduring Tradition
For the past 28 years, St. Mary’s has offered Aggie Awakening retreats, most recently Aggie Awakening #92. This studentled and student-run ministry strives to foster an “awakening” to Christ’s presence in the world. For many students, the
retreat marks a deepening of their faith and a commitment to believe, practice and live God’s message of love.
An Awakening Retreat not only involves 120 “retreaters,” but also an on-site staff of approximately 100 students, with
others who contribute their efforts in other ways. The staff prepares through prayer, leadership training, team building
and service projects. AA #1 began on Friday, October 14, 1983. Aggie Awakening #100 will be in the spring of 2014.
Joe Allen ‘12 led AA #92 and said, “From the months of planning beforehand, down to the very end of the weekend, God
has continued to move in great ways. With Aggie Awakening #100 coming up in just a few short years, there has never
been a greater time to be a part of this largest and longest running Awakening retreat.” 
Farewell and Howdy!
College Station is a place of “good-byes,” and at the end of the last school year we said “Farewell
and Godspeed” to Father Chris Downey. St. Mary’s was Father Chris’ first assignment after he was
ordained a priest in 2009. He served as associate pastor for two years, and leaves us to become pastor
of Holy Family Parish in Copperas Cove, Texas. We will miss him, and we wish him many blessings
in his new assignment.
College Station is also a place of “Howdys!” and we send a big one to Aggie Father Will
Straten ’00, St. Mary’s new associate pastor. He was born in Waco and grew up outside of
West. A proud member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2000, Father Will was active in
Aggie Awakening and the Knights of Columbus, and served as Mass coordinator during his student years. He earned
a degree in agronomy, focusing on turf management. After a discernment retreat in 2002, Father Will realized that God
was calling him to his turf to cultivate a different kind of soil! He entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in
June 2009. For two years, he served as associate pastor of St. Helen Parish in Georgetown, Texas, before God,
through Bishop Joe Vásquez, sent him back to us! Welcome Father Will, and may your service to the Aggie
Catholics bear everlasting fruit! 

KACB and KEDC Announce Alliance
St. Mary’s Catholic Center’s Aggieland Catholic Broadcasting (KACB 96.9 FM) and RED-C
Catholic Radio (KEDC 88.5 FM) spread the Gospel message on the local airwaves. Both
stations share similar goals and challenges even though they serve different listeners.
Aggieland Catholic Broadcasting focuses on programming for college students, while
RED-C offers a wide variety of programming for the public-at-large.
The stations are announcing an alliance that will benefit Catholic radio and the
listeners they serve. In addition, this alliance allows the stations to share resources
and provide students for-credit internship opportunities in Catholic radio with Texas
A&M University. Although each station will continue its own unique programming
format, the stations will share a studio, management and equipment, and engage in some parallel programming.
To this end, RED-C moved its studio to St. Mary’s, which lets both stations operate from one central location. This move
and new equipment will allow live local programming from the studio, live programming from remote locations, and
locally produced call-in shows.
This collaborative relationship also brings an exciting development! Texas A&M University Communications, Agricultural
Journalism, and Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering programs will begin a student radio internship
program with Aggieland Catholic Broadcasting and RED-C Catholic Radio. After the students graduate, they will take
this valuable media skill with them to places all over Texas and beyond.
Aggie Catholic Dennis Macha ‘92, President of RED-C Catholic Radio, said, “This internship with TAMU for our radio
stations will be mutually beneficial. KEDC and KACB will benefit from assistance with radio production, public relations,
development, and engineering. And, our student interns will be able to help serve the Church while also getting a
valuable learning experience for a future career, along with credit for their studies.” 
Aggie Catholics Celebrate Throughout Texas
Since the spring of 2010, St. Mary’s has sponsored Aggie Catholic
gatherings in different parts of Texas, bringing together students,
former students, prospective students and parents. To date, Aggies
have gathered in Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas/Fort
Worth, Austin and Hallettsville.
The gatherings typically began with Mass, concelebrated by Father
David Konderla and Aggie priests in the area. Aggie deacons were
invited to serve. Afterwards, at an informal dinner, Father David updates
the attendees about why St. Mary’s is receiving national recognition for
Catholic campus ministry. Current and former students speak about
how participation in the programs and activities of St. Mary’s allowed
them to develop their leadership

Financial Highlights Being Good Stewards of our Gifts of Treasure
Most Successful Raffle Ever!
St. Mary’s students, friends and benefactors joined together to make
the 2011 Winner’s Choice Raffle the most successful ever, with over
$120,000 worth of tickets sold. The raffle is a major fundraiser, and serves
to introduce many new benefactors to the mission and work of St. Mary’s
Catholic Center. The lucky winner was William (Bill) Boyett from Bryan,
Texas. Bill has been a loyal supporter of St. Mary’s raffle, having purchased
tickets over the past six years. As the winner, he got to choose either a 2011 Toyota Corolla, 2011 Toyota Tacoma Truck
or a $15,000 scholarship to any post-high school education program. It didn’t take long for Bill to make his decision! 
Top Ticket Sellers Party with Coach Sherman
Aggie Catholic football coach, Mike Sherman, graciously invited students who sold at least $250 in raffle tickets to a
party in recognition of their efforts. Students reported that a chance to meet and “party” with the coach was a great
incentive! Thank you, Coach, for hosting a wonderful event, and may God richly bless you and the Fightin’ Texas
Aggie Football Team this season. 
And the Next Step Is...
It’s no secret that St. Mary’s is serving more and more students,
and this is a wonderful blessing from God. Along with this
blessing comes the challenge of meeting their spiritual needs
and helping them to develop into Apostles for the Church
and World.
Featured
Benefactors
Currently, St. Mary’s is “bursting at the seams” within the
church, in the parking lot, and in the Student and Activity
Centers. Not only are we out of “facilities,” we also need more
staff to serve the students—those who come to us and those
whose faith is not an important part of their lives (yet).
In other words, it has never been a question of whether we
need to grow, but how to grow in a prudent way, following
God’s plan. Toward this end, we are pleased to announce
an exciting development.
Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, St. Mary’s has
joined with Dini Partners to conduct a feasibility study to
answer the question of how to best proceed with this growth.
The study will access the ability to raise funds and grow in the
following areas:

Members of the Living Faith Society
We were blessed to have been raised in
strong Catholic families, but it was not until
we became involved in the community at
St. Mary’s that our hearts were opened to a
more intimate spiritual life, a true spiritual
awakening.
After graduating, joining the workforce, and
starting a family of our own, the spiritual
foundation God blessed us with at St. Mary’s
continues to be a key aspect of our daily lives.
Because of those who came before us and
supported St Mary’s through their time and
financial resources, our lives have been forever
changed. We have made it our commitment
to continue to support St Mary’s so that young
Aggies may have the same opportunity to
discover Christ’s love as we did. 

Sacrificial Support at all Levels of Giving
During the 2010-2011 fiscal year, St. Mary’s Catholic Center
relied on thousands of benefactors to support the ministry.
Without the gifts of students, parents, friends, charitable
foundations and other benefactors, St. Mary’s could not
provide comprehensive campus ministry services to
thousands of students. As you can see, all levels of support
are necessary for St. Mary’s to continue and grow the Catholic
campus ministry services for A&M and Blinn students. We
believe each gift represents hope and trust in God for the
future of our youth and the Catholic Church. 
Benefactors Allow St. Mary’s
to Keep Pace with Enrollment
During these challenging financial
times, St. Mary’s has been blessed with
benefactors committed to forming
the future leaders of the Church and
society with the riches and wisdom of
the Catholic faith. During the 20102011 fiscal year, gifts to St. Mary’s
increased by over 16%, allowing St.
Mary’s to meet our budgeting goals.
We especially appreciate this generosity
as the number of Catholics on campus
continues to increase. We estimate
there are over 15,000 Aggie and Blinn
Catholics. Your gifts allowed St. Mary’s
programs and services to keep pace with
the growing enrollment at Texas A&M
and Blinn College.

newman council {$10,000 or more}
Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman inspired Catholic university students to understand the teachings of the Church,
live their faith and grow in their relationship to God during their college years. Benefactors who make gifts of $10,000 or
more annually allow for the expansion of Catholic ministry on campus and are designated as members of the Newman
Council. St. Mary’s thanks these generous benefactors.

I gotta little story for ya Ags...
“St. Mary's has been a church to call home since I moved to College Station. My siblings
were very involved here, and they encouraged me to take part in St. Mary's great programs. I
had the opportunity to go on an Aggie Awakening retreat as a freshman, and I would like to
take the classes St. Mary's offers in the Church's social justice teachings and apologetics. St.
Mary’s is extremely accessible and available—the seven weekend Masses make it possible
for busy, active students to keep the Lord's Day holy. St. Mary's has provided a solid foundation for my erratic life!”

scholars fund {$1,000-$2,499}
Scholasticism teaches that faith and reason complement each other in our understanding of the divine. Benefactors
who make gifts ranging from $1,000 to $2,499 annually allow St. Mary’s to help today’s students proclaim and live the
truths of our faith in an increasingly complex society. With so many more Catholic students on campus than ever before,
St. Mary’s appreciates the commitment of these benefactors.

Special Visitor. Last November,
Archbishop Timothy Broglio of
the Archdiocese for the Military
Services visited St. Mary’s Catholic
Center to celebrate Mass and visit
with students. The archdiocese
was created by Pope John Paul II to
provide the Catholic Church’s full
range of pastoral ministries and
spiritual services to those in the U.S.
Armed Forces. Since his visit, the
archdiocese sponsored two students
to attend a vocations discernment
retreat in California. Aggie Catholics
have also shown their support for
the men and women in the armed
services by partnering with the
local American Legion in preparing
and sending boxes of “goodies” and
letters to deployed troops.

Rosary Makers. In 2009, the Rosary Makers, a group of students and
others interested in promoting the devotion, began meeting at St. Mary’s
after Tuesday weekday Mass. Since then they have made nearly 1,700
rosaries. The rosaries are given to students preparing for confirmation,
benefactors of St. Mary’s and those in jail. Their rosaries also fill up the
“rosary basket” at the receptionist desk, where any visitor is welcome to
take one. Of course, maroon and white are the favorite colors!

Launching Pad SMYRT. St. Mary’s
Youth Retreat Team (SMYRT) is a
group of approximately 80 college
students who travel to parishes
within 100 miles of St. Mary’s and
lead high-energy retreats for middle
and high school students. Each
semester SMYRT leads 8-10 retreats,
including confirmation retreats
and retreats meeting the particular
needs of a parish. Most retreats are
conducted in parishes that do not
have full-time youth ministers. Each
year for the last 10 years, SMYRT has
also “launched” at least one student
into the National Evangelization
Team (NET) after graduation. Like
SMYRT, NET travels to parishes to
fulfill their mission of challenging
young Catholics to love Christ and
embrace the life of the Church.

Knights. Grand Knight Ryan Skrobarczyk ’12 reports that the Aggie
Knights of Columbus Council 10624 has been busier than ever—over 300
members strong, and 35 joining the order this year. In addition to hosting
four blood drives, participating in the Big Event, selling turkeys to support
seminarians and help the poor, cooking for many St. Mary’s events,
standing and praying for the “40 Days for Life,” co-hosting the Hoedown
benefit, helping to repair and clean St. Mary’s facilities, they still find time
to have fun!

Benefactor’s Prayer
God Our Father, We thank you for the
blessings you bestow on us and for giving us
the means to share with others. We humbly
acknowledge that what we have is not from
our efforts alone, but comes to us through
your divine care and providence.
May our charity be in accord with your holy
will, promote the Kingdom of God and the
Gospel message of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through your Holy Spirit, please bless
with wisdom and prudence our decisions
to share the gifts that you have given us.
Guide those at St. Mary’s Catholic Center to
continue being faithful stewards, using and
multiplying what is entrusted to their care
according to your holy plan.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son,
our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

Aggie Football Player Joins Catholic Church
Just like any student who is seeking God’s will in life, a “celebrity” student wants the freedom and practical help
to hear God’s voice without fuss and fanfare. With great humility, Big 12 standout Michael Hodges made
his profession of faith as a Catholic at Mass on Sunday, July 31. Michael was prepared for this commitment
through St. Mary’s Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program. Regarding this conversion, Hodges
said, “I feel blessed to have joined the Catholic faith and community. This new chapter has already brightened
other areas of my life, and I am excited about facing my future upheld by this faith.”

- C L A SS GI FTS class of 2011 pledges $67,000
For more information about making a gift from your class, contact:
Johanna Bazin (979) 846-5717 or [email protected].
In appreciation for their experiences
at St. Mary’s, students are organizing
within their class to present St. Mary’s
with a class gift upon graduation. The
Class of 2011 donated and pledged
over $68,000 to date. To celebrate,
the classmates gathered for a “Last
Supper” shortly before graduation to
present Father David Konderla with
a ceremonial check. The concept of
class gifts started with the Class of
2005, which has committed more than
$53,000 to the St. Mary’s permanent
endowment. Individual students
pledged at least $1,000 to participate
in this gift. Inspired by these young
Ags, a member of the Classes of the
1940s helped develop the concept
of decade class gifts. At this time, the
Classes of the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s,
1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s have
committed nearly $580,000 to this
permanent endowment. Proceeds of
this endowment will allow St. Mary’s
to continue to minister to future
generations of Aggies.
