COAST MENTAL HEALTH SPECIAL DONOR REPORT
APRIL 2012 - OCTOBER 2013
In 2005, following his most recent episode of depression, John was
released from hospital with nowhere to go: no job, no home, no car.
Then he discovered the Resource Centre Art Room – a place of comfort
and artistic inspiration that sparked a journey to wellness.
“When I found Coast, I was the lowest I’d ever been,” says John.
“I started painting in the art room; I painted every day, all day.”
With volunteers facilitating workshops, John was also able to
socialize with other artists and integrate into a new community.
Like many others who frequent the Resource Centre Art Room, John
found the experience to be cathartic. Now in good mental health,
he continues to paint each day, and his artwork has even become an
increasing source of income.

Centres of Excellence
Now in its 20th year of operation, the downtown Vancouver RESOURCE CENTRE
has over 500 active members and provides 300 meals daily, as well as laundry
services, clothing and shower facilities. For many people outside the mental health
system, the centre is a first point of contact and facilitates their connections
to health care, housing and funding as well as volunteer and employment
opportunities.
THE RESOURCE CENTRE ART ROOM is a member-run space where individuals can
learn and create, and which holds an annual Art Show in the autumn. Beyond
producing artistic works, our members have also created a safe and welcoming
place to call their own.

THE COAST CLUBHOUSE is a comprehensive and dynamic support program.
Unlike traditional day treatment and other day program models, Clubhouse
calls its participants “members” (as opposed to patients or clients) and activities
focus on their strengths and abilities, not their illness. All participation is on a
voluntary basis.

From outward appearances, Adrienne seemed to have it all: a
university degree, a passion for classical music and a job as
a government researcher. But inside, Adrienne struggled. Her
depression and anxiety were worsened by workplace pressures. Unable
to cope, she felt suicidal.
Psychiatric intervention saved Adrienne’s life. Moving into a
Coast supportive housing environment helped her get back on track.
“I felt isolated and alone before I was at Coast. Support provided
by the staff helped me to settle in and relax and keep healthy.”
Today, Adrienne is back at work. “It feels good to be getting my
life back on track. It feels really good.”

Housing
A key determinant of health is housing. Being homeless or under-housed creates
or worsens health problems, mental health issues and addictions, and strains
costly public systems – police services, emergency rooms, hospital beds, detox
units and residential treatment programs.
Coast houses 1,o00 individuals with mental illness, aged 18 through 90, in 36
housing sites in Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam and Surrey.
“Being homeless was a full-time job. Getting enough to eat, staying safe, finding a
place to sleep…it all takes so much time and energy that you have nothing left.
You don’t have time to care about your health, physical or mental. It is exhausting.”
~Todd T., Coast client and Peer Support Worker, speaking at the 2013 Homelessness Awareness Week Forum

Chris knew he had an eye for design. But that was just one reason
why his job as a shipper/receiver didn’t satisfy him. A struggle
with mental illness complicated matters. Before he knew it, Chris
was on long-term disability, without a job or relationships, and
facing bankruptcy.
Fortunately, Chris found Coast Mental Health’s Transitional
Employment Program, which works with people with mental health
concerns. After transitioning through the program’s three training
units at the Clubhouse, Chris and his employment counsellor created
a plan for Chris to study graphic design, including submitting a
proposal to Human Resources and Skills Development Canada to receive
funding for the program.
Since completing the nine-month training, Chris has emerged
confident and enthused about his work as a graphic artist. “This has
made a large impact on my life. Without Coast, this would have never
happened.”

Employment
CLUBHOUSE / TRANSITIONAL EMPLOYMENT
The Clubhouse provides pre-vocational and vocational opportunities for its
400 active members in a safe, inviting environment. Members learn work and
social skills while working side by side with employment counsellors and other
members, have a low-cost nutritious meal, participate in a variety of group
recreational activities and use the free laundry facilities.
PACT JOB OPTIONS
In partnership with the Province of BC, Coast’s PACT office provides intensive
employment-seeking training to individuals with a mental illness. The five-week
program is offered four times a year and participants are followed on a oneto-one basis by employment counsellors for a six-month period after training.
The program includes classroom and individual instruction in job-search and
interview skills, resumé and cover letter preparation, and strategies to maintain
employment, such as conflict resolution and stress management.
Unfortunately, the funding for this very successful program has been cut.

Diagnosed in her early youth with bipolar disorder, Susan had big
dreams but couldn’t see how to make them a reality. Coming from a
low-income household, a lack of financial resources further limited
her options. By age 19, although she was stable on medication for
her illness, Susan couldn’t see a future for herself.
Fortunately, Susan discovered Coast Mental Health’s Educational
Assistance Fund, which provides individuals with mental illness
who are interested in job training up to $2,500 for education and
training.
“I was so excited when the Bursary Committee approved my
application. I knew decisions on who to choose are made very
carefully.”
For Susan, education was the final step in her transformation.
Today, she is a gainfully employed recreation therapist.

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE FUND
Anyone receiving services from Coast can apply for an educational grant that
can be used for skills training designed to enhance employability. The Assistance
Fund is supported by private donations. In 2012, 11 individuals were awarded
funding for training; and in 2013, 11 individuals were awarded education bursaries.
Total funding awarded was $15,400.
COAST MENTAL HEALTH ADULT LEARNING CENTRE
In partnership with Vancouver Community College, classes
are held in the PACT offices two afternoons a week for anyone
wishing to upgrade their English, mathematics or writing skills.
Additionally, adults who speak English fluently can access grade
0 through 8 equivalency courses taught by VCC instructors. These
flexible courses are tuition free and feature small class sizes.

For eight years, Mike was homeless and addicted to drugs. “Then,”
he says, “two Coast Mental Health outreach workers rescued me and
restored hope within me.”
Since receiving treatment, and safe housing provided by Coast,
Mike has remained clean. That was two-and-a-half years ago. Along
the way, he completed Coast’s Peer Support Worker (PSW) training
program. “The beauty of being in a room full of survivors offering
what has worked for them and what might work for someone else was
extremely eye opening.”
Now working as a PSW, Mike says, “I see some people who I
remember from when I was in a different stage of life. I listen to
them and when possible offer guidance and show them that there is
another way.”

Peer Support & Wellness
PEER SUPPORT WORKERS are those with lived experience of mental illness who
are trained to help others. Research shows that peer support programs accelerate
recovery for people with mental illness.
In addition to our existing well-established PSW Program, Coast has successfully
launched two specialized programs: YOUTH PEER SUPPORT and WELLNESS/
DIABETES PEER SUPPORT.
Our Youth Peer Support Worker training program equips youth recovering from
mental illness with the skills to help others their own age.
10
To help better serve the growing number of our clients with pre-diabetes and
diabetes conditions, the Wellness Peer Support program trains PSWs in diabetes
prevention, giving them the tools to provide education and support for our clients
living with this complicated illness.

Struggling with schizophrenia and ongoing drug addiction, Malcolm
has been a member of Coast’s Resource Centre for nearly 20 years.
Already 41 years old, Malcolm will require a lifetime of specialized
support.
Malcolm’s mother Joan has always been there for him. But, at 78
years old, she knows that won’t always be the case. Fortunately,
through Coast’s Financial Trust Program, Joan found peace of mind
and a way to ensure a long-term source of income for Malcolm that
won’t jeopardize his disability payments.
“Through the trust I can give money to Malcolm now and in my
Will.” Instead of Malcolm receiving a lump-sum payment, which could
have disastrous results, Coast officers will manage the trust.
“I am so grateful for this program. It will bring Malcolm security
long after I am gone.”
Joan kno
that her son will remain
safe after she is gone
Financial Trust Program
Coast is authorized under an Order in Council to administer trust funds for
“Persons with a Disability” (PWD), including people with mental illnesses. The BC
government dictates that the maximum entitlement for income assistance is
$11,300 per year. Total liquid assets allowed (minus a car and a home) is $5,000. The
earnings exception is $800 per month.
Coast’s FINANCIAL TRUST PROGRAM offers a simple structure designed to help
mental health consumers maximize the benefit from a lump-sum payment
without affecting their eligibility for PWD benefits.

We are Coast Mental Health.
Established in British Columbia as a non-profit organization in 1972, Coast is
committed to enhancing the independence and quality of life of persons with
mental illness by providing them with diverse opportunities for recovery and
ways to lead independent, sustainable and meaningful lives.
We offer practical support like homeless outreach, food, clothing and
supportive housing, as well as essential life skills, education, employment and
rehabilitative social and recreational opportunities.
WE BELIEVE that every individual and every family must have a place to turn to
get help when mental illness strikes.
WE BELIEVE that everyone has a right to physical and mental health, and that
this begins with a meal and a home.
WE BELIEVE that the youngest and the most vulnerable people in our
community must never end up on the streets, at risk of violence and suicide.
WE IMAGINE a world where people with mental illness are treated with
compassion and understanding everywhere – a world where no one is
ostracized or discriminated against because of a devastating illness they didn’t
ask for and don’t want.
WE ENVISION a community where sons and daughters, parents, friends –
anyone who is stricken with a mental illness – receives effective treatment and
support when they need it. A world where no one is homeless, lives in poverty,
is unemployed, hungry or estranged from their friends and family.
WE WORK to make a better world for everyone with a mental illness.

Event Sponsors – The Courage To Come Back Awards
The Courage Awards celebrate British Columbians who have overcome adversity, illness and injury and who have given
back to make a difference in their communities. Courage is made possible by partners who sponsor the event, distribute
nomination forms and reach a million people a year through the media. Corporate sponsorships ensure that money raised
at the Gala Dinner goes to support Coast services and clients.
