SURF SPORTS UPDATE
Welcome to Omaha beach Surf Sport
Update. As so much has been happening in and around the club
lately we thought it was time to briefly update everyone on Surf Sports & Junior Surf. Please read on
and see what we have been up to.
Junior Surf
Junior surf carnival season got underway on December 5th at Red Beach. Omaha were represented by Angus &
Jack. The December & January carnivals are participation events where no results are recorded or finals run,
and is great for getting everyone involved in all the events. Then in February, March the Regional & National
Champs take place which do run finals & take results. Below the captions sum up carnival #1 perfectly. Thanks
to Ross Syminton.

Coaches & Officials
As everyone knows nothing would get done if we didnt have dedicated volunteers willing to put time into both
coaching at the club and officiating at carnivals. We have had some great new volunteers put up their hands
this season, as well as regulars returning. This is great news with so many new skills being learned and passed
on by our clubbies. Photo on the right is two of our newly qualified officials Ruth & Graham hard at work at the recent IRB
carnival.
"
Congratulations to those who have recently
completed Coaching & Officials courses.

Senior Carnivals & Events
Our senior competitors have been busy. We have been lucky enough to have an awesome surf coach
Teneale Hatton who has been working with a core group of clubbies over winter, especially on surf
skis, which is still a relatively new craft to Omaha, as well as swim, board & general fitness.
The first hit out after the winter training was the Northern Region Long Distance Carnival in October.
This was also our first time attending a Northern region event in many years with surf skis so a
major milestone for the club. We have followed it up with a mix of local, club & Northern Region
events. Results as follows.

The mount monster is turning into the ultimate in endurance surf sport events in NZ. It is 25km
long, includes all the lifesaving disciplines, a 5km beach run, a challenging rock jump, a 1.5km swim,
a 12km ski & 6km board paddle. Based at Mount Maunganui beach it attracts the countries top surf
sport athletes for a cash prize on offer. it is an awesome event to watch and huge respect to
anyone who completes the monster either as an individual or in a team.
Thanks to Teneale & her coaching, Paul Hardy, Sam Peterson & Chantelle Maher went out and
conquered the Mount Monster as individuals.
Austin Puckett, Liana Sykes, Hannah Shaw & Tyler Ferguson-Yearbury nailed it as a team.

IRB Racing
Over the last couple of seasons Omaha has been developing an interest in IRB racing. This has really
taken off this season led by our enthusiatic ladies team of Holly Ostling, Laura Puckett & Francesca
Orchard Hall…aka… Blue footed Boobies.
"
September saw Omaha field 3 teams for the annual pilgrimage to Far North for the 90 mile IRB
classic. This is a pre season IRB endurance race in the far north, and tests the skills and mental
fortitude of all involved. Always a great social gathering post race with true Far North hospitality.
Those who raced were, Holly Ostling, Laura Puckett, Fran Orchard-Hall, Hannah Shaw, Paul Hardy,
James Alach, Rhiannon Gill, Julian ostling, Alex Southwick, Tyler Ferguson Yearbury, plus support crew.
NR IRB Carnival #1 - Omaha
Great turnout at Omaha for the first Northern Region IRB event. Being at our home beach we
were able to mix our teams a bit and give everyone a go at racing and being a patient. Our ladies
team are on the improve taking out the novice division races while our open team, had a slight
problem with the rules unfortunately DQ’d a few times, although Im sure that is just down to
beginners bad luck.
Those taking part were; Laura, Holly, Fran (Boobies), KB, Julian Ostling, Graeme Garner, Tyler
Ferguson-Yearbury, Alex Southwick. Team manager Izi Campbell.
patients; Xavier Garneau-Roughan, Ashleigh Cooke, Tayla Rogers, Liana Sykes, Austin Puckett, Billie
O’reilly, Lexie McGillivray. (apologies if Ive missed anyone)
