Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
GOD’S WORK
We are so busy! Most of us have more than
one job to do, and we never seem to have
enough time. We are workers, volunteers,
parents, friends, and most of us are more
than one thing at a time. But which of these is
the work of God?
We seldom view our ordinary work as being
the work of God. We may think that we have
to be ministers or priests, missionaries or
charity workers, engaged full-time in works
formally identified as being “God’s work.” But
everything we do with a faithful heart and
with love for others is God’s work. We each
have our own role to fill in the world, and
many gifts are necessary. We cannot always
see the direct connection of our daily work to
the plan of God. But we trust and we believe
that God leads us to do what is needed,
where it is needed. What is “God’s work?”
“This is the work of God, that you believe in
the one he sent” (John 6:29).

Decimoctavo Domingo del Tiempo
Ordinario
EL TRABAJO QUE DIOS QUIERE
¡Estamos tan ocupados!
nunca tenemos suficiente tiempo. Somos
No siempre

A Message from Archbishop José H. Gomez
I would like to share with you two announcements made by the Holy See this week of
great importance to our Archdiocese. First, Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of
Bishop Gerald Wilkerson, Auxiliary Bishop for the San Fernando Pastoral Region, upon
reaching the retirement age for bishops, which is 75 years old.
Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a priest for 50
years, and as a bishop since 1998. He has fulfilled his ministry with zeal and dedication,
and we are very grateful for the many things he has done for the people of God in the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are also grateful because we know that even in his
retirement, his health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry among us.
The Holy Father has also named Msgr. Joseph V. Brennan and Msgr. David O’Connell
from our Archdiocese along with Father Robert Barron from the Archdiocese of Chicago as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It is with great joy that we
welcome the announcement of our three new auxiliary bishops. I believe each of them
will help us in our mission here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — the beautiful mission we have of sharing the love of God and the message of Jesus Christ and promoting
human dignity and mercy and justice in our society.
The Archdiocese has created a special webpage with information on the announcement
of our new auxiliary bishops, including the video of the presentation of the bishopselect, their statements and special articles from The Tidings. I invite you to visit this
page at http://archla.org/20150721.
Please join me in praying for them.

apostolic movement founded by Don
Bosco under the guidance of Mary Help
of Christians. The event is on from
August 14 to 16 at Saint John Bosco
High School. Admission is free. Tickets
are available in the plaza after Sunday

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN
Did You Know?
Helping children problem solve
through communicaƟon
O en the easiest response to complicated
conversa ons is a generic one, but these
moments can be opportuni es to help children
grow. For example, if a child comes to you and
tells you that a friend is being le out of social
ac vi es, you might respond with a ques on:
“Do you think there is anything you can do help
him/her feel more included?” Or if your child
comes to you for money for social ac vi es,
instead of offering a solu on, you might prompt
them to consider ways that they could earn
money or fundraise on their own. In this way,
you are not only helping a child find a solu on to
an immediate situa on, but also helping them to
grow in wisdom and prudence. For complete

ayúdenlos a pensar y examinar diferentes maneras
