“Not only has our son learned to love physics, grown as an artist, taken college level courses as part of his school day, but he’s so connected to his teachers and
his community. He adores his teachers, wants to show up prepared for their classes and looks forward to an engaging dialogue. For us, Khabele strikes the proper
balance between challenging academics and a balanced life as a young adult, son, student, artist, athlete, friend, leader. We love being part of a school that keeps
evolving.”
This quote was taken from a website where parents can anonymously rate and review their favorite and not so favorite schools. This was an unsolicited review and
almost a perfect snapshot of what we aim to accomplish here at Khabele. Our students are bright and hungry for knowledge. They come to class each day ready to
speak their minds and ask questions. Our teachers are respected as experts and friends. They challenge the students academically as well as mentor them through
healthy social and emotional development, which is desperately needed during the teen years. Our parents are supportive and open-minded, willing to invest
in helping their children find their inner greatness. Our administration is nimble and innovative. We do our absolute best to embody what this parent reflects,
keeping the best of the past while continuing to grow with the future.
We have recently embraced a new label to better describe what kind of education we provide here at the Khabele School: Emergent Education recognizes the
relative strengths and shortcomings of both traditional and progressive education and creates a new approach that embraces the complexity of our rapidly changing
world. The model holds that education must continually be responsive to global and national trends, as well as to the needs of particular schools, communities,
and environment.
This year has been a testament to our stance that this kind of education not only works, but exceeds expectations. Since last year, we increased teacher pay by
9%, while public school districts cut jobs. We also reduced class sizes and class loads so that our teachers could give students even more individualized attention
and care. With academic department heads, school directors for each school, and a new student dean, our teachers are more supported and have the resources
they need to design and provide excellent, interactive lessons and projects for their students. We increased our financial aid giving, our ethnic diversity, and our
international student population, making the community a more inclusive and rich experience for all students.
We have added new programs such the Independent Study Program and Senior Projects as well as new sports teams and elective courses. We now offer a full
array of AP classes for high school students, as well as what we call “full-service college counseling,” a program in which all students apply to at least 5 colleges
and receive one-on-one support from our college counselor. Our scores far exceed the blue ribbon public schools and come in barely under the prestigious prep
schools that have been in existence for decades. (Our average SAT composite score is 1,878.)
In addition to all of the academic accolades, our students are actually happy well-adjusted young folks who love school and love their lives. They deal with
struggles and challenges, but in general, they feel supported and engaged and are actively working towards finding their purpose.
How are we able to do all of this? We are a nonprofit organization approaching our 10-year anniversary. We do not have a million-dollar benefactor, nor the
support of a church nor educational association. The Khabele School is a fully independent school that has grown and flourished with the help of the community.
Our parents not only pay tuition, but they also make gifts to the Annual Fund, attend and give to the Spring Gala, and give hundreds of volunteer hours organizing
fundraisers, working the front desk, supporting music, arts, and sports programs, and helping the school with outreach projects. Our family members come to
events, support their students, and give generously to our fundraising initiatives. Our donors give to a vision that this school is not only effectively educating over
200 students, but also becoming a leader in the world of education. Our teachers go the extra mile, stay late to give students extra help, attend after school and
weekend events, and give to the Annual Fund as well. Many of our students are donors, giving their allowance and volunteering countless hours for events and
projects that help the school become better year after year. As a result, we have exceeded our Annual Fund goals and the school is thriving.
I would like to send a special thank you to our Honor Council and Community Leader Circle members who have given above and beyond during 2010: the Kathy
and Gavan Goss, the Tamara and Zoltan Papp, the Susan and Bobby Epstein, the Marye and Deron Miller, the Jodi and Fred Zipp, Doug Drane, and Michael
Doherty. Our Development Committee also deserves special recognition for their volunteer work on the Annual Fund: Jodi Zipp, Florence Spalding Shawn Toler,
Jane Pollard, Liz Maxfield, Liz Nash, Moya Khabele, and Erin Harrell. It is worth mentioning that two of the seven members are parents whose students have
already graduated, yet they are still committed to the development of the Khabele School. Last but not least, our Annual Fund and Volunteer Director Erin Harrell
deserves a heartfelt thank you. She has transformed our development office from a small experiment to a well-oiled and professional administrative asset.
The Khabele School has achieved surprising successes because of your support. Whether you are a student, teacher, parent, donor, family member or some
combination of any of these, we thank you for your trust, support, and generosity. Remember that as the school grows, we are always seeking to grow our base of
supporters. Please share this Annual Report with friends and family so they can see what the Khabele School is accomplishing in the Austin community.
