My Journey with Chevrolet by Phil Falk (’06)
This month we are pleased to run an article written by a
past club member in place of the traditional President’s
Letter. We hope you enjoy this feature.

In the 1950s and ‘60s, men were often known by their allegiance to one make of car. They generally bought from only one manufacturer and very rarely switched brands. You were either a Chevy, Ford, or Chrysler man. I naturally became a “Chevy man” because that is what my dad had, but I believe Dinah Shore singing “See the USA in your Chevrolet” may have had just as much influence. My father owned a 1940 Ford before the Chevy and I’m sure it was my input that caused him to make the switch. As a 4‐year‐old in 1949, I would hear Dinah on the radio singing her advertisement for Chevrolet, so when my parents were deciding what to buy, I put my two cents in…“Get a Chevy, Dad, they’re better on trips.” To this Events

day, I can clearly remember going with my dad to pick up his new car. It was in the fall of 1949 that we waited for a bus on the porch of Allentown Hospital’s NCM Ambassador

Laura and I would like to thank EVERYONE in the AACC for all your participation, support, and help in making this year’s Springfest show another successful one. We would especially like to thank last year’s outgoing Springfest committee, Dennis, Frank, Jim, Rich, Bonnie and Charlotte for guiding Laura and I through our first show. We would like to acknowledge and thank the following people for their support and participation on the day of show: • Chris Miller (General Manager, Faulkner Chevrolet‐

ful campus once again. • Lance Miller (Carlisle Productions) for agreeing to be our Celebrity Guest this year and bringing his Carlisle Blue ZR‐1 to the show. Lance and his wife, Michelle, had a great time and enjoyed participating in our Tricky Tray auction. Lance Miller with Laura and Marty Hegyi

Jamison Publick House Luncheon
Sat., May 19 — Linda & Woody Roberts organized a luncheon at an historic restaurant owned by Linda’s family member — the Jamison Publick House (Pennsburg, PA). With the gorgeous weather, club members met at various locations across the Lehigh Valley and cruised the backroads to the event. Although the weather was nice enough to eat out‐
doors, our 30 attendees overtook Jamison’s main dining room. There we selected from a special lunch menu with popular items being the Classic Black Angus Burger, Buffalo Shrimp Salad and Grilled Churrasco Steak. Prices ranged from $9 to 13. The Jamison Family has proudly renovated the historical Geryville Publick House back to the original (c.1745) warmth of stone, wood and candlelight. They welcome all who thirst for value and service whether it be for a sandwich, a beer, or a bottle of wine over dinner. [www.JamisonPublickHouse.com] Thanks to Woody and Linda for making the arrangements and a special thanks to the owners and staff of the Jamison Publick House for not only opening your doors and being such wonderful hosts but also being a donor to Springfest! NCCC Awards
Wed., May 23 — Now that the 2011 competition season has ended, the results have been tallied and the final times have been posted. AACC is not a big auto‐crossing club, but we do have some racers with quick hands and heavy right feet. During the last May club meeting, NCCC Governor, Pete Lilick, announced there were two such racers in our club. Pete first presented Jim Fagan with a Top 10 Badge for finishing in 9th place in NCCC East Region autocrossing events. Not in attendance at the club meeting was Tom Schneck, who finished 5th in East Region autocross points. Tom's 5th in autocross also placed him 24th in Overall Competition in the East Region, for which he received a Top 25 Competitor badge and an embroidered shirt. Congratulations to both Jim and Tom. Here’s to even faster times in your 2012 competitions!! Tom Schneck in competition S

nurses’ home. (That building is still there, located on the south side of the hospital’s present day 17th and Chew Streets parking lot.) I was so excited that I left a favorite toy on that porch, never to be found again. When the bus came, it
took us to Town Auto Company at 631‐639 Linden Street in Allentown. I don’t remember much about what went on at the dealer, but I do remember the drive home and turning onto West Street from Gordon—our address was 335 N. West Street. After making the turn, I stood on the front seat feeling so proud to be coming home in a brand new, two‐
tone green 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe. I became a little Chevy man that day and was ready to see the USA. My father kept that car until after I graduated from college. In 1959, I began my sophmore year at William Allen High School. Those were the days when high school consisted of only grades 10 through 12. Each morn‐
ing my friend and I rode to school with his father, getting there with plenty of time to spare before the beginning bell. If it wasn’t raining, we would stand on Linden Street to watch everyone arrive. The area was a meeting place, so there was always something going on and this got the day off to a good start. I won’t forget one warm, sunny morning in May when a couple of the guys brought their guitars and played rock and roll music on the front lawn before school. This was an event that didn’t happen often…it was memorable and drew a large crowd. I suppose most people look back on their high school days with nostalgia, but the middle to late ‘50s were especially good years. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was President and our nation was making great progress after having weathered The Great Depression, World War II, and the Korean Conflict. Even though the cold war was on, Nikita Krushev had not yet precipitated a cri‐
sis by trying to place nuclear missiles in Cuba. Our nation had become the envy of the world and the economy was moving along just fine. Vietnam was not yet part of our vocabulary or thoughts, so these were carefree times for a high school kid who only had to think about cars, girls, and how to get through school. Watching the cars drive by kept us busy, with Fords and Chevys getting the most attention. However, there was one car that was in a different cate‐
gory than the rest. It was either a 1958 or ‘59 Corvette that, as far as I know, was the only one in Allentown driven by a high school student. In fact, I believe it was the first Corvette I ever saw. The car was owned by an upperclassman named Lenny (don’t remember his last name), and he drove his fuel‐injected Corvette down Linden Street every morn‐
ing. The sound of a Chevy small block with a Duntov cam and solid lifters is unmistakable, and this one hit all the right notes. I never forgot it. As I neared college graduation in 1967, I finally began looking for a car of my own. Naturally it was going to be a Chevy, so I picked up a brochure. It didn’t take long to see what I wanted. There was a picture of a Marina Blue Chevelle SS‐
396 that I couldn’t stop looking at. I still have a copy of that sales brochure. After graduation, I worked at Crowder Jr. (Continued on page 13)

My Journey with Chevrolet Phil Falk (continued)
(Continued from page 10)
Company—a motor repair shop—until I began a full‐time job in BelAir, Maryland that August. I saved enough money to make the down payment on a car and bought a Marina Blue Chevelle Malibu coupe from Hauser Chevrolet in Beth‐
lehem. The salesman’s name was “Wild” Bill Cawthry. He explained that it was near the end of the 1967 model run, so ordering a new car from the factory was no longer an option. To compensate, I got a good price ($2535), but not quite the car I wanted. My dad came along to make sure I made a good deal and bought the “right car,” which in his eyes was not an SS‐396. My new Chevelle had a three‐speed stick shift on the column and the standard 195 horsepower, 283 cu. in. V‐8. I did get the Marina Blue color I wanted, but it had to be brought in from another dealer. I won’t forget the day I picked it up at Hauser’s satellite lot located at 416 West Union Boulevard, a couple hundred yards west of the Route 378 overpass. I was completing paperwork in their small shack of an office, which after 44 years is still being used to sell cars—now by Dick Milham W. Union Blvd. Auto SaIes—when someone started an L‐71 big block Corvette right outside the door. I never before heard anything that sounded so powerful…at least for street use. When I went outside, all I could do was stand there in awe of that beast. It had sidepipes and sounded mean, like it could run anything else off the road…and it probably could have. If you never heard a solid lifter big block you’re missing a real treat. They have a deep rumble that a small block can’t match. I wasn’t driving a Corvette home, but I was driving my own brand new Chevrolet and couldn’t have been more proud. The years between 1967 and 2004 were filled with raising a family, working two jobs, and all the joys that life has to offer, so any thoughts about Corvettes were fleeting. However, things changed when my son showed me the February 2004 issue of Motor Trend Magazine. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. That issue had the first write‐up of the brand new 2005, C6 Corvette and the new model Mustang. The Mustang was a retro design, taking cues from the 1967 to 1969 Mustangs. I later read that Tom Peters, head designer for the C6, said they focused on the C2 Corvette (1963‐1967) in designing the C6 even though something from each previous generation was evident in the design. Looking for more information, I went out and bought the February 2004 issue of Car and Driver, which also covered both cars. Car and Driver titled this issue “Reborn in the USA!” After reading the articles, I felt like I was reborn and had to buy one of those cars. At first, I chose the Mustang…it was a lot more affordable, but after my son and daughter said, “Buy the Corvette!”—it was settled. It didn’t take much arm twisting. My decision was cemented at the 2004 Philadelphia Auto Show. Chevrolet had a Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic C6 coupe on display under lighting that made it look like the most beautiful car at the show—at least to me—and it reminded me of the ’67 Corvette I remem‐
bered from picking up my new Chevelle at Hauser’s lot. I had to have that car and wasn’t going to be denied. Beverly, Jason, and I experienced delivery of our 2006 Corvette coupe on October 7, 2005 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. It was a memorable day. We had a VIP tour through the assembly plant and then the (Continued on page 14)

museum. After our museum delivery experience was completed, we spent three days driving the Corvette home through the beautiful states of Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. While driving home, a little jingle from long ago came to mind. It was time to see the USA in our new Chevrolet. M&M Memorial Motor Madness Len Feinberg (’09)
Sun., May 27 — A small group consisting of Jim & Linda Peters, Brad Orey, David Gittings, Ken Greidanus & Nancy, Nick Recchia & his son, and Joanne and I braved the questionable weather and headed to the M&M Memorial Motor Madness. After driving through the fog and mist, we were nearly there when it started to rain. I had to stop and put the top up. Once we arrived however, the weather was warm and sunny. Everyone put their tops back down (once they dried). Other members from both clubs (Easton and Allentown) were also there. The show was nice but due to the rainy weather in the morning, the turn out was less than expected. Apparently texting was the main interest for some of the women (check the pictures). Also the turkey vultures seemed to enjoy the show, as there were quite a few circling overhead. http://public.fotki.com/eacc/m‐m‐memorial‐motor/ Photos by
