Welcome to the Iron Hill Twilight Race Series
T
his year marks the 9th annual edition of the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium.
And once again the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce takes
pride in bringing this great event to the streets of West Chester.
Over the years, we have continued to add new activities and attractions that
not only showcase our borough but also attract more of our community to join in
the fun. This year is no exception as we have added a new race to the day’s festivities.
Introducing the Tolsdorf Oil Lube Express Mile, an exciting all-out sprint that we feel
certain will be a popular addition to the day’s events. Runners of all levels from young
novice runners to elite, world-class athletes will have the opportunity to compete for
glory as thousands of spectators cheer them on.
Of course, the marquee event continues to be the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium pro
men’s bike race, which continues to rank as one of the most prestigious single-day
pro bicycle races on the east coast. And for kids, parents and all who join us, the West
Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race, AAA Travel Kids’ Zone, Kinetic Physical Therapy
Community Festival, Maxxis BMX Stunt Riding and the Rothman Institute Amateur
Bike Race add to the excitement.
In light of this growth, the overall day will now be known as the Iron Hill Twilight
Race Series to more accurately reflect the more varied athletic competitions that
spectators and competitors will enjoy on the first Saturday after the Fourth of July.
While putting on this event is always a challenge, the rewards to the community are
worth all the efforts. There are so many people and organizations that come together
each year to make this possible: the support of our sponsors, the Borough of West
Chester, the Mayor’s office, our local police, hundreds of volunteers, members of the
West Chester Cycling Club, the Chamber staff and its 700 members, as well as the
entire community of West Chester. To all of them, we say, “Thank you.” And to all who
come to enjoy this great day of athleticism and family-fun activities, we say, “Welcome.”

MORE RACING, MORE FAMILY FUN,
Special Promotional Section
I
f you were looking for one word to sum up this year’s day
of racing and family-friendly events it would be “more.”
In fact, so much has been added to this year’s lineup, that
the day of fun and competition has been re-branded as the
Iron Hill Twilight Race Series.
Now in its ninth year, the marquee event continues to be the
Iron Hill Twilight Criterium, West Chester’s unique bike race
that is now one of the most important professional cycling events
on the east coast.
“While the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium will always be the
centerpiece of the day, we’ve added so many new events that
it was felt that an all-inclusive title for the overall event was
warranted,” said Mark Yoder, president of the Greater West
Chester Chamber of Commerce. Certainly the impetus was in
partial response to the addition of the fi rst non-cycling event,
the Tolsdorf Oil Lube Express Mile. This high-intensity running
W4 june 2012

l
event will consist of a series of all-out sprints along the same
course as the bike race. Back-to-back heats will offer amateur
runners of all ability levels, as well as elite athletes, the
opportunity to test themselves against their peers in an all-out
one-mile sprint.
“Competitive running has continued to surge in popularity
since we fi rst brought bike racing to West Chester in 2005,”
said Yoder. “Now virtually everyone will have an opportunity
to test their skill against runners of a similar level. Whether
you want to ride, run or cheer on the athletes, West Chester has
you covered!”
For amateur cyclists the action starts at 8:00 a.m. and continues
until 3:00 p.m. on race day with amateur bike racing at Bayard
Rustin High School in West Chester. These races will allow
riders of all levels and abilities to test themselves under prime
race conditions.

MILERS TO HAVE THEIR DAY IN WEST CHESTER
L
ast year we opened up the day’s events to include more
amateur cyclists. This year we’re going one step further
by introducing an amateur running event,” commented
Mark Yoder, President of the Greater West Chester
Chamber of Commerce. He is referring to the Tolsdorf
Oil Lube Express Mile, an all-out sprint for runners of every age
and level, including elite athletes who can run the mile in under
four minutes. “Being the first of its kind in West Chester, we’re
really happy to be a sponsor of the event,” said Chris Tolsdorf,
President of Tolsdorf Oil Lube Express.
Most races of this type are straight as an arrow. Making this mile
run unique is the fact that it encompasses eight city blocks in
downtown West Chester, where runners have to navigate four
90° turns on their way to the finish line.
The action begins at 5:45 p.m. with the Citizens’ Mile, open
to anyone from 5 to 105 years of age, male and female. “It’s the
chance for one and all to experience the thrill of hearing and
seeing thousands of spectators cheering you on as you run to the
finish,” said Kevin Kelly, co-owner of CCRS (Chester County
Running Store), one of the organizers for the event.
Next up are the High School Boys’ Mile at 6:05 p.m. and the
High School Girls’ Mile at 6:20 p.m. “Henderson High School
has a lot of great runners who can run the mile in the 4:20 range
so we expect lots of participation,” says Kelly. “Of course, I’m
sure the same holds true for many of the area high schools so the
competition should be top-notch,” he continued.
This year the USA Track & Field Championships are being held
at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, on June 20-23, so there
W8 june 2013

l
will be a lot of very fit elite runners on the hunt for events that will
help keep their fitness level at peak performance. Many of these
top athletes train at nearby Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.,
under the direction of Hall of Fame Coach Frank Gagliano. The
Tolsdorf Oil Lube Express Mile promises to attract a large turnout
of these elite runners, so spectators will see some of the best
athletes in the country on the starting line for the Elite Mile runs.
The Elite Womens’ mile will start at 6:30 p.m.; the Elite Mens’
Mile begins at 6:37 p.m.
Runners who want to compete can sign up at Tolsdorf Oil Lube
Express at 330 East Market Street, West Chester, CCRS at 24
South High Street, West Chester, or online at IronHillTwilightCriterium.com. The entry fee is $20 if registered by June 15,
$25 by July 5 and $30 on race day. All entrants will receive a free
Nike Dry Fit Training Shirt at the time of packet pick-up on July 5
and 6 at the CCRS West Chester location. Prizes will be awarded
in all categories, cash for the elite classes and Nike merchandise
for the high school and citizen races.
Whether you are a runner, a cyclist or spectator, there’ll be lots of
excitement for everyone at this year’s Iron Hill Twilight Race Series.
The event is presented by Nike, CCRS and the Greater West
Chester Chamber of Commerce.
THIS JUST IN! Chris Tolsdorf, President of Tolsdorf Oil Lube
Express, the event’s sponsor, has raised the gauntlet with a
challenge: “Anyone who beats me in the Citizens’ Mile gets a
free oil change,” he declared. Let’s hope they don’t run out of oil!

Showcasing our many local businesses,
the Kinetic Physical Therapy Community

hottest new innovations, the latest “musthave” toys, fabulous food and a business

And keep your eye out for the Maxxis
BMX Stunt Riders, who will amaze
spectators throughout the day with their
gravity defying antics. Prepare to be
wowed as these trick riders spin through
the air, dance on one wheel and do crazy
antics that you’ll just have to see to believe.
Once again, leading off the evening
racing will be the West Chester Dental
Arts Kids’ Race, which continues to draw
hundreds of children. Few can resist
cheering on the youngsters between the
ages of 3 and 10 as they furiously peddle
their two- and three-wheel rides towards
the finish line.
Always a popular attraction, the Market

kids can create their own masterpiece
in chalk on the street. Those looking for
good times will not be disappointed.
Great food, live music and a party-like
ambiance will continue to make this a
popular spot.

IRON HILL TWILIGHT CRITERIUM:
seventh year as a USA CRITS venue
C
riterium bicycle racing has a unique set of cycling skills
that requires its own ranking and points system. Now in
its seventh year, the USA CRITS Championship Series
was founded to focus solely on that cycling discipline
and provide riders and teams outlets across the country
to showcase their abilities and talents, while providing ear-splitting
excitement to both cycling and non-cycling spectators alike.
This year the USA CRITS Championship Series consists of nine
races spread out across the United States. Cities large and small
are represented: big cities such as Saint Louis, MO; Tucson, AZ;
Boise, ID; and (where it all began) Athens, GA; as well as mediumsize towns like Charlotte, NC; Glencoe, IL; Delray Beach, FL; as
well as Binghamton, NY, and West Chester, PA, one of the original venues for the USA CRITS Championship Series in 2007, the
founding year for the organization. “Iron Hill Twilight Criterium
became one of the first to sign on,” said USA CRITS founder
Gene Dixon. “It was among the first to have all the elements in
place for what would become the definitive USA CRITS venue.”
USA CRITS uses a points system that rewards participation,
consistency, sprinting and, most importantly, finishing placement. These points accumulate throughout the race schedule and
qualify individual riders and teams to compete in the USA CRITS
Finals in Las Vegas, NV on September 20. In 2011, the overall winning rider in the points competition earned over 1500 points while
finishing in the top 10 in four of seven races.
Not only is the USA CRITS Finals the culmination of a long
season of racing, it is also one of the richest criterium races in the
country with $50,000 in prize money up for grabs.
That’s just one of the reasons it’s nearly impossible to overstate
the importance of this year’s Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. As the
seventh in the USA CRITS series of nine events, this pro event
continually attracts some of the top professional cyclists looking
to protect or improve their standing before the final invitational.
It’s a combustible combination, one that means competitive
cycling at its most extreme.
Since becoming a founding member of the USA CRITS, the Iron
Hill Twilight Criterium has seen attendance double time and
again as thousands of spectators throughout the tri-state area—
and beyond—descend on West Chester looking for a great time.
Dixon is not at all surprised by the growth: “You don’t have to be
a cycling enthusiast to get caught up in the excitement of a USA
CRITS bike race.”
WHAT MAKES A CRITERIUM SO DIFFERENT?
As a style of racing uniquely American and certainly well suited to America’s taste for excitement, a criterium is a tightly contained race that features
short high-speed laps, often through flat city streets. Unlike a road race or stage race where spectators see the riders pass by once or a few times,
a criterium allows fans to see the riders a multitude of times, in most cases once for every mile.
It’s a recurring loop where top athletes pass by so close you can actually feel the wind brush your face as they ride bikes at speeds of 35 mph
or more. And as a spectator, one can see how each successive lap adds another layer of intrigue to the race narrative, as alliances are formed,
then broken, and how teams work together in their quest for supremacy.
One of the best ways to appreciate the race strategy as it unfolds is to walk the
route in the opposite direction of the race while occasionally stopping at key
turns and straightaways. Just make sure that as the race gets down to the final
laps, you find a good spot at the finish line to watch the excitement of all-out
sprinting which usually climaxes the race and determines the top-placing riders.
“It’s going to be a very interesting contest at the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium this
year,” predicts Gene Dixon, founder of the USA CRITS. “The season started off
close and I expect it will only tighten up by the time we get to West Chester.”

TOP BMX STUNT RIDERS TO AWE SPECTATORS
A
t 42 years of age, Keith King
is the godfather of BMX stunt
riding. It all started when, as
a five-year-old child, he found
an Evel Knievel bike under
the family Christmas tree back in 1976
(Santa should have known better). Since
then, King has inspired generations with
his BMX freestyle performances that
include competing in the 1997 and 1998
X Games. Today, this legacy continues in
the form of his own company, the Maxxis
BMX Stunt Team.
Millions saw them last year on America’s
Got Talent as these peddle-pumping daredevils fought for air space with the birds
while flipping 360° before pounding the
pavement on their front tires. As recently
as this past January, the North Carolina
PROUD SPONSOR
native was honored when his likeness
appeared on the cover of BMX Rider
Magazine. The good news is that King is
bringing his accolades to the Iron Hill
Twilight Race Series to thrill and excite
spectators with gravity-defying antics.
Our advice: watch, enjoy, be thrilled, but
don’t try it at home.
“There’s nothing compared to seeing
these guys live on the streets of West
Chester,” said Dave Fairman, Director of
Membership of the Greater West Chester
Chamber of Commerce and founder of
Fairman’s, the area’s top skate, snow and
surf shop.
“We loved kicking off the Iron Hill
Twilight Criterium last year,” said King.
“The pro-cyclists were really great. We
just happen to ride in a very different way.
And this year we’re really going to give
them something to talk about!” To make
good on that promise, King says he will do
something truly spectacular for the West
Chester crowd.

MORE WAYS THAN ONE
W
hile it’s easy to see that
the Iron Hill Twilight
Criterium has achieved
positive exposure for
the community, this
exceptionally popular event generates
other benefits that often go unnoticed.
For example, the income generated through
sponsorships available at the event helps
give the Chamber the resources needed
to market the Greater West Chester area
with greater effectiveness. The most recent
example is the organization’s newest initiative called the ThinkShopBuy…LOCAL
awareness campaign.
nity. We invite everyone to stop by
our booth to pick up some great offers
from Chamber members,” commented
Mark Yoder, President of the Greater
West Chester Chamber of Commerce.
According to Civics Economics, when
a local resident spends a dollar in a local
business, 68¢ of it will be reinvested back
into the community. Spend a dollar elsewhere and less than half returns. Not
surprisingly, purchases made over the
Internet do very little to support the
economic well being of the Greater West
Chester community. It’s a surprising
statistic, one that drives home how
interdependent we are to each other.
With this in mind the Greater West Chester
Chamber of Commerce has instituted the
ThinkShopBuy…LOCAL promotion to
encourage shopping and buying from local
businesses. Participating establishments
displaying the Greater West Chester
Chamber of Commerce seal is your assurance that local dollars stay local, helping
to strengthen the community. There
are three ways to get all the details: visit
GreaterWestChester.com where you’ll find
the complete list of participating businesses as well as special value-adding coupons,
download the ThinkShopBuy…LOCAL
app, or stop by the Greater West Chester
Chamber’s booth in this year’s Kinetic
Physical Therapy Community Festival
located on High Street between West Gay
and Market Streets on race day.

the next generation.
The impressive production scenario
includes four strategically placed cameras
throughout the eight-block race route that
will allow viewers to witness the strategy
of the race as it unfolds, while a camera in
the mechanic’s pit will showcase the skill
of top bike mechanics as they change flat
tires and make repairs in seconds. Another
camera will be on duty at the finish line to
catch all-out sprinting as riders compete
for the many bonus prizes (primes) that
are up for grabs throughout the main race,
as well as capture the exciting conclusion
of one of the East Coast’s most important
professional bike races.
“We’re thrilled to be able to share this
uniquely American style of bike racing to
everyone wherever they are,” said USA
CRITS founder Gene Dixon.
It’s all just an app away. Details are available on IronHillTwilightCriterium.com.

Our bigger-than-ever
commitment to
Chester County is
starting to take shape.
At The Chester County Hospital and Health System, signs of transformation are everywhere. Our 93,000square-foot patient tower is nearly complete, adding beautiful private rooms. We are also working on
plans for a new Women and Babies Wing with all private maternity rooms and a redesigned Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit. A reinvented Emergency Department will enhance your experience and reduce wait
times. And our TrueBeam™ Linear Accelerator—the very latest in cancer treatment technology—and
other technical wonders will be unveiled. Stay tuned as our transformation begins and comes to life in
the weeks and months ahead.
