The COLER GmbH, an expert for
vehicle parts and repair shop
equipment, was looking for a new
warehouse management system
for their 32 sites in Germany. They
were looking for a solution with a
high scalability that would allow a
quality increase for the customer
deliveries. They decided in favor
of the warehouse management
system LFS produced by Ehrhardt
+ Partner (E+P). The reason: in
comparison with other warehouse
administration tools, LFS not only
administers the inventory, but actively manages and coordinates the
warehouse processes. The starting
signal sounded in 2010 in the Bielefeld warehouse. E+P integrated the

based on the elaborated logistics
strategy and the training concept
“Train the Trainer”. The objective of
this concept was to train the COLER
employees during the first go-live

Strategic roll-out planning
Before the integration, a logistics
strategy and a roll-out plan had to be
elaborated. In this process, the exact
requirements to the new warehouse
management system were analyzed
and the objectives were defined. In
2010, E+P started with the implementation of the system in the Bielefeld
warehouse, the first of seven sites for
which an implementation was planned.
This warehouse was quickly followed
by the sites in Kirkel, Mülheim-Kärlich,
Holdorf, Oldenburg and Trier. Recent-

consists of more than just managing

logistics play a decisive role in the
process chain. “Together with E+P,
we planned to optimize the entire
logistics chain”, Torke says. “This is
only possible when warehouse management and transport management
are closely connected. With LFS and
the two functional areas LFS.wms
and LFS.tms, we have found the suitable solution.” The advantage of the
new LFS.tms product line is that the
solution can be used as an integrated
part of LFS without additional interfaces. This means that all processes
can be displayed in the familiar and
user interface of the warehouse management system. The objective was
to efficiently increase the quality of
the customer delivery with the new
software products and to make all
processes traceable and transparent.

The tour planning module offers different stages that build upon each other.
It includes options for manual tour processing with three sub-functions for
frame tours, map representation and
tour optimization as well as options
for dynamic tour planning. These functions can be adapted to the different
industrial sectors and the customers’
individual requirements.
The connection of the LFS.wms warehouse management solution and the
LFS.tms transportation management
solution allows an acceleration of the
internal processes at COLER and an
increased efficiency for the customer
delivery. Already during order consolidation, a command can be entered
in order to inform the transport management system about the location of
the items to be shipped. In addition, a
driver can flexibly take up other orders
when collecting the items in the warehouse. When the driver recognizes that
goods that have not yet been allocated
to the current can be delivered on the
same route, the goods can be scanned
in order to allocate them to the current
tour. At the same time, the warehouse
management receives a request for
changing the order status. “In addition,
we use the system in a way that all orders of a customer are collected and
recorded with a cut-off time in order to
pick the ordered items in a path-optimized form. This means that we deliver
several orders for the same customer
in one process.” Shorter processing
times guarantee a higher customer
satisfaction. The vehicle parts expert
has to provide many different items in
stock. Here, LFS guarantees a high inventory security, which is also important for stocktaking. The system’s high
flexibility also shows in tour processing: As the processes in the warehouse
are connected to the processes on the
road, the drivers can optimize them
easily and autonomously. With their
handheld computers, they can always
check the current status of their orders.

players in the spare parts industry. Besides car parts and accessories for
the free market, the company also stores original spare parts for many
car manufacturers, offering their customers the full range of products.
In addition, COLER offers the complete assortment of repair shop equipment and special tools. The company assists the repair shop owners in
planning new buildings, making reinvestments and buying new equipment. The maintenance and repair services efficiently solves customer problems the same day. The trade assortment is completed by the

As a multi-channel company, the
Popken Fashion Group counts on
three distribution channels with the
fashion labels Ulla Popken, GINA
LAURA and JP 1880: mail order
trade, shop trade and franchising.
In order to optimize textile logistics, these channels are managed
in one central warehouse. In the
first step, the Popken Fashion Group
optimized their warehouse management software for the Ulla Popken
profits from the highest possible transparency in the
warehouse, shortened delivery
times and an efficient returns management.

solution flexibly adapts to changing conditions in textile trade and
the resulting logistic requirements.
This way, the Popken Fashion Group

products are very popular, so that the
holding uses three distribution channels: mail order trade, stationary trade
with approximately 300 shops and
franchising. The multi-channel strategy is monitored in the central warehouse in Rastede, near Oldenburg.
It has also been implemented for the
menswear label JP 1880 and the GINA
LAURA GmbH & Co. KG, which belongs
to the company group since 2012. In
the Rastede central warehouse, all
threads of Ulla Popken and JP 1880
run together. Expressed in figures, this
means a throughput between 30,000
and 40,000 parts per day. In addition,
approximately 7.3 million items are
stored on a surface of 52,115 square
meters every year. In order to guarantee the timely and correct delivery of
the items, a powerful warehouse management system is required. Before
the cooperation with E+P, the Popken
Fashion Group managed the logistic
processes of the different business
areas separately. “The former solution
could not offer us the required transparency”, says Michael Ostermann, division manager for logistics at the Ulla
Popken GmbH. “We opted for LFS, because the solution offers a high range
of functions and can be flexibly adapted to our requirements.” LFS manages
the processes for all business areas,
based on their different requirements.
These requirements are especially high in fashion logistics: There are
many items to be stored (so-called
stock-keeping units), short delivery
times, high returns rates and a high
share of seasonal items which make
professional warehouse management
essential.
Smooth processes
in mail order trade
The most challenging distribution
channel of Ulla Popken is the mail order trade, which consists of the catalog and the e-commerce business. The
challenge: Many small deliveries have
to be sent to customers all
over the world. The enterprise
also offers their customers a
24h delivery service. In order to increase transparency
and to keep the processes
as lean as possible, LFS
allocates a shipment type
to every incoming order.
When order series are created, the orders with the
same shipment types are
grouped. This accelerates
the shipping processes.
Another important factor
for e-commerce is returns
management. 50% of the
goods ordered online are
sent back to the sender.
These goods have to be available for
other orders as quickly as possible.
Therefore, Ulla Popken has created a
zone for fast-moving items. Seasonal
items or frequently ordered items are
quickly made available for dispatch.
LFS detects the resale value of the
goods based on the sales figures defined in the system. Returns orders
with a high resale value can immediately be used for the next dispatch.
Short processing
times with LFS
Every month, Ulla Popken publishes
a new catalog and offers the items in
more than 300 shops throughout Europe. In order to guarantee the timely
delivery of the new collections, short
delivery periods have to be observed.
Throughput times between two and
three days are the norm. In order to
guarantee the deadline compliance,
Ulla Popken also uses the LFS function
for creating order series for the stationary trade. In Rastede, the enterprise
uses a split tray sorter to which LFS
allocates the order series. Afterwards,
the goods are distributed to the single
shops. The warehouse management
system transfers the information about
the item quantities to be distributed to
the split tray sorter. “Currently, we only
use this picking type for folded garments”, Michael Ostermann explains.
This type of goods accounts for 70 percent of the shipping volume. “We want
to further optimize our processes”,
Ostermann continues. “That is why we
are planning to connect a sorter system for hanging garments to LFS in our
Oldenburg warehouse.” This way, the
manual two-stage picking process for
hanger goods can be omitted.
Transparent processes,
also during order peaks
In order to guarantee the highest
possible quality, almost every item
is checked before sale. “In the past,
the incoming deliveries often blocked
the goods receiving area, because
the items could only be stored after
passing the check”, Michael Ostermann explains. Now, a direct storage
is possible, because LFS can identify
the items at any time, which allows a
check after storage. This also streamlines the goods receiving processes,
which is especially important in times
of high order volumes – like a season
change – in order not to lose track of
the processes. The franchise business
is also seasonally driven. This business
segment for instance includes enterprises that autonomously use the brand
names Ulla Popken or GINA LAURA and
run their own business autonomously.
Here, depending on the purchaser, specific requirements – like for instance
packing instructions – have to be observed. These requirements can also
be controlled and documented in LFS.
The project in an overview
Set for the future: With the centralization of their warehouse
management with LFS, the Popken Fashion Group relies on a futureproof ­system.
Flexible industries require flexible solutions: LFS can be adjusted to the
changing requirements of the textiles enterprise and allows the highest
possible transparency.
LFS securely manages the high throughput between 30,000 and
40,000 parts per day. Individual packing instructions are also observed
in LFS.
LFS also manages the high returns rate of almost 50%. For returns, the
system detects the resale value in order to make the goods available
for sale as quickly as possible.
The warehouse management system also guarantees the secure
handling of folded garments items and transfers all required
information to the split tray sorter.
A challenging project: The fast-moving industry requires a permanent
adaptation of the warehouse management processes. At short notice,
the new label GINA LAURA and the corresponding online shop were
successfully connected to LFS.

Provider selection
A sense of tradition
since 1844: Founded
as a family-owned enterprise,
the Seeberger GmbH with headquarters in Ulm, Germany, today
delivers several thousands of tons
of dry fruit, nuts and coffee to customers all over the world. Another
tradition of the South German company is working with the warehouse management system LFS of
Ehrhardt + Partner (E+P), which
has been in use at Seeberger for
more than 20 years, controlling all
movements in the raw materials
warehouse.
“The objective of building a
new warehouse was not only
to create more space, but also
to guarantee a reliable supply
of raw materials for the production machines. This was not
possible before and the material flow processes
were not optimal”,
Frank Bäcker, operations
manager of the
Seeberger GmbH,
explains.
“That is why
we decided to
automate all
processes in
the new warehouse
in order to obtain a
smooth material flow.” The
decision in favor of LFS and E+P
was easy to make: The warehouse
with channels of 14 horizontal and
15 vertical rack levels. In total, 700
different items can be stored on the
23,000 pallet bin locations in the new
warehouse. In goods receiving, the
raw materials are recorded in LFS
using radio frequency terminals. With
forklifts, they are taken to one of the
six hand-in points. From there, they
are transported to the high bay warehouse.
In the warehouse, a fully automated
laterally guided shuttle system takes
the pallets to a buffer section for the
stacker cranes that can handle both
Europe and industrial pallets. The
stacker cranes move between two
aisles with up to 250 meters per minute. The goods are allocated to bin locations in three different temperature
zones: On the bottom level, the products are stored at 5 °C to 8 °C. In the
zone above, there is a temperature of
up to 15 °C and on the top level there
is a zone without temperature control.
In recent years, all signs have been
pointing towards growth. To be able
to handle the increasing goods and
production volume in the future, the
company decided to build a new automatic warehouse. The special feature:
Using a bridge, the new building will
be connected to the production site
and the old warehouse on the other
side of the road. On this bridge, a driverless transport system (DTS) guarantees the reliable supply for the 25
production machines. Here, too, LFS
will ensure the entire material flow. Up
to 75 pallets per hour will be stored
and retrieved in the new Seeberger
warehouse.
Starting as a food wholesaler in 1844,
the Seeberger GmbH has developed
into a worldwide active brand for dry
fruit, nuts and coffee. So far, all raw
materials have been stored in one
of the 18,000 pallet bin locations
of the old warehouse. To be able to
handle the increasing order volume
that is expected within the frame of
the growth strategy, the company
has decided to build a new high bay
warehouse and to automate all processes. The entire material flow will
be controlled by the warehouse management system LFS.

Seeberger –
Visions leading to success
In 1844, Seeberger was founded as a family-owned enterprise. Thanks
to the long-time experience, the medium-sized enterprise has a long
tradition in all markets of the world. The product range includes nuts,
dry fruit and coffee specialties from one of Germany’s oldest coffee
roasters. All products are subject to strict quality control. The harvesting process is resource-saving and the products are gene technology
free. This way, Seeberger can guarantee their customers the highest
possible product quality.
order is created, LFS sends a telegram to the stacker cranes in the
automatic warehouse. They will retrieve the required goods and take
them to the retrieval points. Here, a
DTV will pick up the pallet and transport it across the bridge to one of the
25 production machines. “LFS has to
ensure the perfect interaction of the
different automated systems to keep
the production running”, Frank Bäcker continues. The retrieval process
has another special characteristic:
After arrival and before storage, LFS
automatically selects pallets from the
raw material lot for a manual quality
control carried out by the laboratory
personnel.
When a lot has successfully passed
the control, a DTV can pick up the pallets and transport them to the production site across the almost 100 meter
long bridge. LFS allocates the ve­hicles
to the bin locations based on the orders. The Seeberger employees use
their RF terminals to scan the goods
and take them to the next processing
station or place them on the respect­
ive machine for packaging. Thanks
to the automated processes and the
smooth material flow ensured by LFS,
management system had already
been in use at Seeberger’s old warehouse for more than 20 years. In 2012,
a release upgrade was performed.
“This speaks for the quality, reliability
and consistency of the system”, Frank
Bäcker says.
Refrigerated and
automatic warehouses
The new high bay warehouse is 40
meters high and consists of two aisles

products in goods receiving and automatically control the process.
Seeberger can store and retrieve up
to 75 pallets per hour.
High quality standards from
goods receiving to dispatch
Also during the packing process, the
weight and the packaging quality of
the goods are permanently checked.
Afterwards, the nuts, the dry fruit
and the other products are taken to
the finished goods warehouse with
forklifts, before being delivered to
the customers. Four to five trucks
full of Seeberger products leave the
warehouse every hour. “It has been
almost a year now since E+P implemented the new warehouse – and we
can already say that we have more
than ­tripled our capacities and that
we profit from a transparent material
flow”, Frank Bäcker summarizes.
Within the frame of the Seeberger
2030+ project, further investments
are planned for this site. Currently,

LFS.academy has been extended
and a new offer has been elab­
orated, including a new certification
program.
“Many of our customers are expanding nationally and internationally and
need new employees with the required
know-how in operating LFS”, Marco
Ehrhardt, managing partner of E+P,

Currently, more than 200 LFS experts are needed for the IT and logistics market. Already today, more
than 40,000 employees work with the
warehouse management system. The
IT experts are trained in the logistics
training center – the LFS.academy – in
the headquarters in Boppard, Germany, and in Dubai.
Besides the theoretical courses, all
technologies can be tested on site
and in practice. Therefore, E+P offers
comprehensive testing options in the
logistics training centers with more
than 500 square meters of space
in Boppard, Germany, and in Dubai.
This includes radio frequency, Pickby-Voice or RFID. “The demand for
LFS consultants is very high, so that,
in the last months, the courses in the
LFS.academy in Boppard-Buchholz,
Germany, were fully booked”, Marco
