Während der letzten fünf Jahre verbrachte ich manch unvergesslichen Abend in
den legendärsten Clubs in Havanna. Ich lernte einige der grössten Musiker
Kubas kennen, rauchte Zigarren und trank vom weltbesten Rum: ein Stück
Paradies!
Der Zufall wollte es, dass ich Lucas traf, jenen Barkeeper, der über neun Jahre
im legendären Social Club von Buena Vista Drinks mixte. Nach einigen Cocktails
war die Idee zu «The Bar at Buena Vista» geboren: nicht nur mit den
Grossvätern der kubanischen Musik auf Tour zu gehen, sondern gleich mit der
gesamten Bar.
Lucas arbeitete in den legendären Clubs von Havanna wie «Sloppy Joes»,
«Niche Bar», «The Floridita», «The Bodeguita del Medio» und dem «Social
Club» von Buena Vista. Manch prominente Persönlichkeit zählte er zu seinen
Gästen. Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe oder Ernest Hemingway, dem er nach
einer durchzechten Nacht den Weg nach Hause zeigte. Lucas kannte sie alle. Die
Gäste und die Musiker.
Es gibt einen Ausdruck in Kuba – descarga – der im weitesten Sinne die bei uns
geläufige Jam Session umschreibt. Ein zufälliges Zusammentreffen verschiedener Musiker, die auf einen Drink in eine Bar gehen und spontan zu den
Instrumenten greifen. Daraus ergibt sich ein improvisiertes Konzert. Diese
ungezwungene, fröhliche Atmosphäre wollte ich für «The Bar at Buena Vista»
aufgreifen und dem Publikum eine aussergewöhnliche Gelegenheit bieten,
einem solchen Abend in einer traditionellen Bar in Havanna beizuwohnen.
Ich lade Sie zu einem Konzert ein, bei dem Sie Zeuge eines Stücks
Kulturgeschichte werden. Die Geschichte der lebenden Legenden und solche,
die auf dem besten Wege dazu sind.

For the last four years in Cuba, I have spent many blissful nights in some of the
great bars of Havana, meeting some of Cuba’s legendary musicians, smoking
exquisite cigars and drinking the world’s finest rum: a taste of Paradise.
Meeting Lucas, the original barman of the Social Club, an idea was born; not
just to take the musicians of Buena Vista on tour, but to bring the Bar as well.
Lucas worked not just the Social Club of Buena Vista but mixed cocktails at all
the legendary bars of Havana – Sloppy Joes, Niche Bar, The Floridita, The
Bodeguita del Medio – and served the likes of Marlon Brando, Marilyn and, after
a long night of daiquiris, famously helped Ernest Hemingway find his way back
home.
There is a term in Cuba called descarga which means the expression of the inner
self through improvisation, which you might call a jam session when musicians
gather in a bar to drink, tell stories and play with old friends, sometimes until
the dawn.
It was this informal nature of a musical evening I wanted to capture. To give
people a unique chance to experience a blissful night of music in a classic old
bar of Havana, and make some new friends.
I invite you to witness the last remaining legends of Cuban music and to meet
the stars of the future.
So, get up and dance when the music grabs you and experience for one night
only the romance, the passion and the heartbreak of a golden age, which is soon
to pass.

Siomara Avilla Valdes Lescay
Begann ihre Gesangskarriere 1950 bei der Formation «Las
Tropical». 1960 wechselte sie zu «Cuarteto Las D’Aida» und
sang neben Omara Portuondo und Teresa Garcia Caturla. 15
Jahre verbrachte sie mit dieser bekannten Band, bevor sie
sich für eine Solokarriere entschied. Sie tourte durch die
damalige Sowjetunion, Tschechoslowakei, Rumänien, Bulgarien, Frankreich, Japan, Spanien, Polen und letztes Jahr
durch Australien und Deutschland mit «The Bar at Buena
Vista». Immer wieder trat sie als Special Guest im legendären «Cabaret Tropicana» in Havanna auf und stand in der
kubanischen Hauptstadt neben Compay Segundo, Maestro
Rubalcaba und Pio Leyva im «Hotel Nacional» in Havanna
auf der Bühne. Siomara Valdes ist die kubanische Diva in
«The Bar at Buena Vista».
Papi Oviedo
Siomara started singing in the late 1950s in a duet named
Las Tropical. In 1960 she started in Cuarteto Las D’Aida with
Omara Portuondo. Teresa Garcia Caturla joined later. She
spent 15 years with this famous group and then became a
soloist. She has toured the Soviet Union, The Czech
Republic, Rumania, Bulgaria, France, Japan, Spain, Poland
and recently Australia and Germany with The Bar at Buena
Vista. She was also a special guest for many years at the
Cabaret Tropicana and performed with the greats such as
Compay Segundo, Maestro Rubalcaba and Pio Leyva at the
Hotel National in Havana. Siomara Valdes is the Cuban Diva
in The Bar at Buena Vista.
Papi ist die No 1 unter den kubanischen Tres-Spielern. Seine
Karriere begann bereits mit 14 Jahren. Unterrichtet wurde er
von seinem Vater, Issac Oviedo, der zu den bekanntesten
Tres-Spielern in Kuba zählt.
Papi spielt seit den 50er Jahren mit den Top Bands Kubas:
u.a. dem Isaac Oviedo Septett, der Abelardo Barroso und
Orlanda Contreras Band sowie Los Papines, dem wohl
bedeutensten Percussion-Ensemble in Kuba. Er begleitete
viele internationale Tourneen.
1996 gründete Papi Oviedo seine eigene Band –
Papi Oviedo y sus Soneros und brachte mit der Formation
zwei CDs heraus.
Papi Oviedo’s musikalischen Improvisationen und sein ausgesprochenes Showtalent sind prägend für die kubanische
Musik.
Papi Oviedo, the No. 1 of cuban tres players started his
music career at the age of 14 under the guidance of his father, Isaac Oviedo, himself one of cuba’s best tres players
ever.
Papi Oviedo played with top bands like Isaac Oviedo’s septet, Abelardo Barroso’s and Orlando Contreras’s bands, all
top stars back in the 50’s in Cuba. Papi Oviedo has been a
guest star with prominent international artists.
In 1996 Papi creates his own band, Papi Oviedo y sus soneros and releases 2 CDs.
Papi Oviedo’s improvisasional skills and showmanship have
marked forever the way cuban music is played.
Maestro Guillermo «Rubalcaba» Gonzáles
Stammt aus einer legendären Musikerdynastie und beherrscht die Violine ebenso wie die Flöte. Sein Herz schlägt
jedoch für das Piano. Nicht umsonst verdient er den Titel
«Maestro». Rubalcaba tritt regelmässig mit dem «Buena
Vista Social Club» auf und ist mit «Afro-Cuban All Stars»
immer wieder auf Tournee.
Rubalcaba wurde am 10. Januar 1922 geboren und widmete 58 Jahre seines Lebens der kubanischen Musik, die er
mitprägte. In seiner Heimat, der Provinz Pinar de Rio, spielte er mit verschiedenen Bands: «Ases del Ritmo», «Eden
Pinareno» und «Monte Carlo». Er war mit «Enrique Jorrin’s
Orchestra» auf Welttournee und trat in Europa zusammen
mit Juan de Marcos’ «Afro-Cuban All Stars» auf. In dieser
Formation war er in der amerikanischen TV-Show «Cuban
Legends» zusammen mit Compay Segundo, Omara Portuondo und Chucho Valdes zu sehen. In Kuba kennt man Maestro Rubalcaba als «den Mann mit den goldenen Händen».
Maestro Rubalcaba comes from a legendary musical dynasty, playing violin and flute but earning his title ‘maestro’ on
the piano. Maestro Rubalcaba is a regular performer with
the Buena Vista Social Club concerts in Havana, he tours
regularly with the Afro Cuban Allstars and at the age of
seventy eight is Cuba’s pre eminent vintage pianist.
Rubalcaba was born on January 19, 1927, and has so far
dedicated fifty-eight years of his life to creating good Cuban
music. In his native province of Pinar del Rio he played with
various groups: Ases del Ritmo, Eden Pinareno and Monte
Carlo. He has also toured internationally with Enrique
Jorrin’s orchestra and in Europe with Juan de Marcos’ Afro
Cuban Allstars. He and his orchestra appeared on the show
Cuban Legends televised by MIDEM in Miami along with
other major figures including Compay Segundo, Omara
Portuondo and Chucho Valdes. In Cuba he is known as The
hands of Gold”.
Reynaldo Creagh
Sein erster Auftritt als Lead-Sänger war 1938. Als 20-jähriger
sang er im Septett «Sonora» in seiner Heimatstadt Santiago
de Cuba. 1942 wechselte er zum «Orquestra Cristal» von
Maestro Filiu Isiarte. 1962 gründete er das «Orquestra
Estudiantina Invasora» in Santiago de Cuba mit. Creagh ist
ausserdem Gründungsmitglied der ältesten kubanischen
Formationen: der «Vieja Trova Santiagera».
Als Kind verdiente Reynaldo Creagh sein Geld, indem er bei
reichen Zigarren- und Rumfabrikanten sang. Er nahm Gesangsunterricht bei Augusto Puente Guillot und wurde bekannt als
klassischer Trova-Sänger. Creagh war ein naher Freund des
bekannten Miguel Matamoros, eines grossartigen Musikers
und Komponisten, der den Welthit «Son de la Loma» schrieb.
Miguel komponierte auch das Lied «El Paralytico», das
Reynaldo Creagh in «The Bar at Buena Vista» singt. Creagh
verdiente seinen Lebensunterhalt mit Musik und als Schaffner
auf der Eisenbahnstrecke Havanna–Santiago de Cuba.
Reynaldo Creagh wurde 1918 geboren und ist mit seinen 88
Jahren das älteste Mitglied bei «The Bar at Buena Vista».
Reynaldo Creagh did his first gig as a lead voice of Septet
Sonora in Santiago de Cuba, back in 1938. In 1942, he joined Orquesta Cristal under Maestro Filiu Isiarte, again as a
lead singer. In 1962, he created Orquesta Estudiantina
Invasora in Santiago de Cuba. He is one of the founders of
Vieja Trova.
As a child in 1928 he used to sing for rich cigar and rum
manufacturers. He took lessons with Augsto Puente Guillot
and his fame and reputation grew as a classic singer of
Trova, the sound of oriente.
He was a great friend of the great Miguel Matamoros from
Santiago who formed the Trio Matamoros, and an outstanding composer who wrote the worldwide hit, Son de la
Loma, and expressed the quintessence of oriente.
Miguel wrote a song for Reynaldo which he sings tonight –
El Paralytico. Creagh born in 1918 is eighty eight years old,
but going on fifty.
Jose «Maracaibo» Castañeda
Ist einer der grössten Gitarristen Kubas, beherrscht jedoch
die Posaune ebenso wie das Piano. Maracaibo ist ein
Multiinstrumentalist. Er spielte in den 50er Jahren in den
renommiertesten Clubs Havannas und den besten Musikgruppen von «Orquestra Riverside» bis zu «Conjunto
Caney». Er schrieb Lieder für den wohl grössten kubanischen
Musiker Beny More, den er auch auf dem Bass musikalisch
begleitete. Creagh und Maracaibo wuchsen zusammen auf
und sind seit ihrer Kindheit beste Freunde. Sie beschritten
musikalisch dieselben Wege mit ihrem gemeinsamen
Freund Ibrahim Ferrer. Sie gelten als letzte Zeugen der traditionellen kubanischen Musik. Das Kompliment eines amerikanischen Journalisten könnte die beiden nicht besser charakterisieren: Sie sind wie der kubanische Rum: je älter
desto besser.
Maracaibo, a multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, is a son
montuno expert and master on tres, congas, trombone, violin and piano. He worked through the 1950s in all the top
Havana cabarets with bands from Orquestra Riverside to the
Conjunto Caney, and wrote songs such as Mi son Maracaibo
for Beny More, Cuba’s greatest musician for whom he played the bass. In The Bar at Buena Vista, Maracaibo pays tribute to Beny More, the big self taught musical star who
played in two of the most influential bands of the 1940s and
1950s. Creagh and Maracaibo grew up and played music
with Ibrahim Ferrer and they are still the best of friends.
Singing and playing with seminal bands such as Sonora
Matancera, Orchestra Aragon, Los Bocucos, they are the last
surviving guardians of this dignified music, aching with
nostalgia. Like Cuban rum, these guys just get better with age.

Luis Valiente, - bekannt auch unter dem Künstlernamen
Betun - ist ein Multitalent der Perkussion. Er begann seine
Karriere 1971 mit der Band des international bekannten
Jazztrompeters Arturo Sandoval.
Betun spielte und tourte mit vielen Weltklasse Bands und
war Stargast bei vielen CD-Produktionen, u.a. Buenavista
Social Club.
Roberto Vilches gehört zu den Spitzentrompetern Kubas. Er
ist der Leadtrompeter im berühmten Tropicana Cabaret in
Havana und ein gefeierter Solist. Er spielte u.a. mit der
Compay Segundos Band und dem Cuban TV Orchestra.
In Europa war Roberto Vilches zu hören auf dem Jazz
Festival in Montreux und dem Nordsee-Festival in den
Niederlanden.
Luis Valiente, artistically known as Betun, started his career
as a multipercussionist in 1971 with the band of Arturo
Sandoval, one of the most prominent jazz trompet players in
the world.
Betun has toured the world extensively and has been a guest
star in a number of CD releases, including one by Felix
Baloy, from the Buenavista social club.
Roberto Vilches ist one of the best trumpet players in Cuba.
Leadtrumpet with world famous Tropicana Cabaret in
Havana and a featured solist in the show. He plays with
Company Segundos band in Havana and is also the leadtrumpet player with the Cuban TV Orchestra.
In Europe Roberto performed at the Montreux jazz festival
and the North sea jazz festival in the Netherlands.
Leo Vera
1966 geboren, startete Leo Vera seine Gesangskarriere als
Mitglied des «Guantanamo Chors» 1983. Später wurde er
Lead-Sänger in Bands wie «Imagen», «Capitulo 10»,
«Ochuni» und den international bekannteren Formationen
«Charanga Habanera», «Limax», «Habana Ensembel» und
«Irakere». Leo Vera ist ausserdem Sänger bei «Afro-Cuban
All Stars».
Im Jahre 2000 wurde er in Peru als Internationaler Sänger
des Jahres geehrt. Vera trat zudem in Kanada, USA,
Südamerika und in Europa auf.
Leo Vera started his singing career as a member and of the
Guantanamo Choir in 1983. Ever since, he became a lead
singer in bands like Imagen, Capitulo 10, Ochuni, and the
internationally famous Charanga Habanera, Klimax, Habana
Ensemble and Irakere. Leo Vera is also a lead singer with the

In 2000, Leo Vera was declared the International Singer of

Eric Turro is the master of these styles and dances regularly in Havana with the Buena Vista Social Club. The traditional dances of Son from the forties and fifties that feature in
The Bar at Buena Vista are unique to Cuba, a hybrid mixture of street and salon styles.

Daiquiri
Saft einer halben Limette, Zucker, 4,5 cl Ron Blanco
(Havana Club), Eiswürfel. Gemixt in einem Shake-Becher
und serviert «on the rocks» in einem Cocktail-Glas.
Squeeze 1/2 of a green lime, sugar, 41/2 centilitres of Ron
Blanco (Havana Club), a few ice cubes. Mix in a cocktail
mixer and serve «on the rocks» in a cocktail glass.
Daiquiri Frappe
Den elektrischen Mixbecher mit gestossenem Eis füllen,
4,5 cl Ron Blanco (Havana Club), Einen halben Teelöffel
Zucker und einige Tropfen Marrasquino dazugeben.
Mixen und in einem Sekt-Glas servieren.
Pour in a electric mixer a good quantity of mashed ice, 4,5
centilitres of Ron Blanco (Havana Club), 1/2 of green lime,
1/2 teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of Marrasquino. Mix
it and serve it in a champagne glass. Drink it cold.
Mojito
1 Limette achteln und Minzzweig in ein Longdrinkglas
geben. Limettenstücke und Minzblätter mit dem Stößel
quetschen. Anschließend 2 TL Rohrzucker zugeben und
das Glas mit Eiswürfeln füllen, 5 cl Rum hineingeben
und mit 8 cl Soda auffüllen.
Havana Loco
1/5 Ron Blanco (Havana Club), 4/5 Teile Orangensaft,
vier Eiswürfel, 1 Scheibe Orange in den Shaker geben.
Mixen und servieren.
Place one cut green lime and mint leaves into a long mojito
glass and squeeze it. Add 2 spoons of sugar and ice into the
glass, then add 5 cl rum and top off with 8 cl soda club.
1/5 of Ron Blanco (Havana Club), 4/5 parts of orange juice,
four cubes of ice, 1 slice of orange. Shake it and serve.
The Buena Vista
Zucker und Zitronensaft mischen, kohlensäurehaltiges
Mineralwasser und Eis beigeben, 4 cl dreijährigen Havana
Club Rum dazugeben und mit ein wenig Tabasco mixen.
Mix sugar and lemon juice, add sparkling water and ice, four
measures of three year old Havana Club Rum and lashings
of Tabasco. Stand well back!
Hemingway Special
Gestossenes Eis, 6 cl Ron Blanco (Havana Club). Einen
Teelöffel Grapefruitsaft, einen Teelöffel Marrasquino und
den Saft einer halben Limette dazugeben. Mixen und in
einem Sekt-Glas servieren.
Mix in a mixer mashed ice, 6 centilitres of Ron Blanco
(Havana Club). Add a teaspoon of grapefruit juice, a teaspoon of marrasquino and 1/2 of green lime. Shake and
serve in champagne glass.
Jesus Rodriguez als Barmann Arturo Lucas
Jesus Rodriguez spielt den Barmann Arturo Lucas und erzählt
seine Geschichte. Denn Lucas kannte sie alle: die Musiker
Kubas, die durch die Tür des Social Clubs von Buena Vista
traten. Als der Mann hinter dem Tresen haben seine Augen
alles gesehen …
Als junger Mann verschlug es Arturo Lucas nach Havanna, wo
er sich in verschiedenen Berufen übte. Er bewachte Autos reicher Touristen vor den legendären Clubs von Havanna, arbeitete jedoch kurz danach selbst im «Sloppy Joes» als Kellner
und später Barkeeper. Bald mixte er Drinks in der «Floridita
Cocktail Bar». Sein Mentor war kein Geringerer als der
Barmann Constantine, der legendäre Erfinder des «Daiquiri»,
von dem er viele Geheimnisse kubanischer Cocktail-Kultur
lernte. Lucas mixte Mojitos für Marilyn Monroe, Cuba Libres
für Marlon Brando und half Ernest Hemingway frühmorgens
den Heimweg zu finden. Nach einer «Indiskretion» mit der
Frau des Besitzers erhielt er schliesslich den Job im Social
Club von Buena Vista, wo er neun Jahre arbeitete und im
Social-Club-Baseball-Team spielte. In den 50er Jahren
herrschte in Havanna klare Rassentrennung. Der Social Club
von Buena Vista war Treffpunkt der schwarzen Bevölkerung.
Strenger Dresscode herrschte auch da, und über das Etikett
wachte Lucas, der in dieser Zeit seinen eigenen Drink kreierte: den Buena-Vista-Cocktail.
Lucas verliess Havanna und reiste nach New York, wo ihm
eine Stelle im berühmten «Palladium Night Club» angeboten
wurde. Dizzy Gillespie oder Perez Prado genehmigten sich
regelmässig einen Buena Vista. Lucas erinnert sich mit
gemischten Gefühlen an New York. Er war eines Abends an
der Seite seines Freundes Chano Pozo, des legendären JazzDrummers, in einer verrauchten Bar, als dieser während eines
Streits um Drogen erschossen wurde. An der Seite von Celia
Cruz verlor er im Glücksspiel all sein Geld und entschloss sich
Anfang der 80er Jahre nach Havanna zurückzukehren, wo er
seine eigene Bar eröffnete: ein Lokal für Legenden der kubanischen Musik.
Eines Abends servierte er dem Regisseur Toby Gough seinen Buena-Vista-Cocktail und erzählte ihm seine
Geschichte. Die Geschichte der Bar von Buena Vista.
Jesus Rodriguez takes the part of the barman Arturo Lucas
and tells his story. The story about every musician who has
passed through his doors. As the man behind the bar, his
eyes have seen it all.
When Lucas came to Havana he tried his hand at many
things. He used to guard cars for wealthy tourists outside a
famous bar, Sloppy Joes, where he got a job as a table waiter and then barman. He soon moved on from Sloppy Joes
and got a job in the Floridita Cocktail Bar under the tutelage
of the legendary barman Constantine, the famed creator of
the Daiquiri. Here he learned many secrets of the classic
Cuban cocktails. Lucas served Mojitos to Marilyn, Cuba
Libres to Marlon Brando and helped Ernest Hemingway find
his way back home. After an indiscretion with the owner’s
wife he got a job in the Buena Vista Social Club, here he worked the bar for nine years, and played for the social club’s
baseball team. Havana society in those days was divided
and the Buena Vista Social Club was predominantly for the
poorer black population, there was a very specific dress
code and etiquette that was strictly adhered to. Here Lucas
invented his own cocktail, the Buena Vista, his own spicy
creation.
He left Havana to work in New York’s famous Palladium
night club, where he served drinks to Dizzy Gillespie and
Perez Prado. He was in a New York bar with his friend,
Chano Pozo the legendary Jazz drummer, when Pozo was
shot dead in a fight over a bag of dope. He crashed with
Celia Cruz when he lost all his money gambling. And he
returned to Havana in the eighties to run his own bar in
Buena Vista, a late night drinking hole for Havana’s legendary musicians and his old friends.
He served one of his notorious full strength Buena Vista
cocktails to Toby Gough one night in Havana and the rest
is history.
