Hospital
Apologies that the newsletter is a week later than normal, I
spent last weekend walking the Flintshire stretch of the Coastal Path from
Saltney to Gronant sands in aid of the three charities I’ve chosen for my
year as Chair of Flintshire County Council. They are Nightingale House
Hospice, Cancer Research UK (through the local Treuddyn and Leeswood
branch) and Mold Community Hospital League of Friends towards the new
X-ray machine, the promise of which helped keep the x-ray department
open during the recent threat of closure.
The Chairman is the ceremonial civic head of the
Council. Duties include presiding over meetings of
the County Council to ensure they are conducted
efficiently and with regard to the rights of
Councillors and the interests of the Community;
raising the profile of Flintshire and acting as
ambassador,; fostering community pride and
recognising individuals and organisations who have
brought success to the County; and I will also be
fund raising for nominated charities throughout the
year.
I was elected by fellow County Councillors at the Annual General Meeting
on 14th May. It is a great honour and privilege and I’m looking forward to
learning more and meeting residents and volunteers who are passionate
about what they do. I will still continue with my normal role as Treuddyn
County and Community Councillor, this is just an extra responsibility for
the year.
My Civic Service is being held on 9th June at St Mary’s Church, Treuddyn
and it’s really appreciated that so many people want to attend. The vicar
will be extremely pleased to see the Church full and we are hoping to
accommodate everyone but it could be a squeeze, there, and in the village
hall afterwards. As Chair of Flintshire, I could have held it in the town but
it was very important for me to hold it locally within our Community.
3
I will be organising various fund raising events over the coming year to raise
as much money as possible for the three charities which I know are also
close to the heart of many residents.
Mold Community Hospital
League of Friends
(towards X ray machine)
I’m hoping that this Summer may be drier than last year and that we can
enjoy all the local events planned including the Strawberry tea, Church Fete,
Treuddyn Festival and Family Fun day as well as all the other great events
publicised in this edition of the newsletter which provide community
entertainment and support various worthy causes.
The sudden heavy downpours we have been having block all the drains and
ditches in an instant with debris and gravel, so need clearing as soon as
possible afterwards to keep on top of them. Don’t forget any problems with
the highways, litter, dog fouling, street lighting, ditches, grass cutting, drains
or waste collections, call Streetscene on 01352 701234. If you have
problems with on going issues please give me a ring.
Don’t forget that for updated, extra information visit the Treuddyn website
www.treuddyn.org.uk. The website is looked after by Treuddyn
Community Councillors, Gill Short and Jenny Smith. Email:
[email protected] or telephone 01352 771346 and
[email protected]. Or telephone 01352 770765.
The village hall continues to be very busy with weekly
activities, events and bookings thanks to a dedicated
caretaker and committee. Should you wish to hire it, please
call Paula Bidwell on 01352 771766.
Mair Williams is the Secretary of Hafan Deg
Association and takes bookings for Hafan Deg.
Best wishes for a Great Summer and warmer weather!

From St Mary’s Church......
As you see in our Calendar, we welcome Carolyn as Chair of our County
Council, at a Civic Service on June 9th. We wish her and her family well in
the busy year that lies ahead.
Recently an appeal was made regarding the future of our Parish Church. The
Diocese asks that we fulfil our obligations in paying our “parish share” (it
used to be called “quota”), and regrettably we have in the last couple of
years fallen behind in payments. As a result of our appeal it is good to see
that there has been a moderate increase in giving, and for that we are
grateful. Every penny counts! If there are any folk who perhaps missed our
appeal, please contact the Vicar or any Church Officer: there are several
ways in which you can help to keep our place of worship open, including
envelope schemes and Gift Direct.
Again, from our Calendar, you’ll see that the first Sunday of each month is
designated as “Children/Family”. This has been the case for many months.
These services are for everyone, and you have the chance to make them into
what you need on a Sunday. Please spread the word; and also remember that
we invite Mums (and Dads) to bring toddlers into Church every Sunday,
around 10am to be with us in Church.
Have a happy summer! See you in Church!
The Vicar can be contacted on 01352 770919, or email [email protected]

CAPEL Y RHOS, TREUDDYN
Many thanks to everyone who supported our fund raising efforts for
the Presbyterian chapels’ Sasiwn. Ladies from all over North Wales
attended and we had a successful day with two meetings at Bethesda
Chapel, Mold. Since we were the hosts for the first time in ten years
we were given a target of £4,000 to fundraise. We were delighted to
have surpassed it by raising £5,500 through the sale of calendars,
recipe books, concerts and the afternoon tea in Hafan Deg.
Many thanks to everyone concerned,
Ceinwen Parry

PROPOSED.PURCHASE OF A NEW X-RAY MACHINE FOR
MOLD COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
The Mold Hospital League of Friends and their support group are
endeavouring to raise £100,000 as soon as possible.
We won the battle to keep open the Minor Injuries and X-Ray Unit at Mold
Hospital. We did state during our campaign that if we could retain the
services we would be willing to purchase a new X-Ray machine. The
current one is well over twenty years old.
The machine will cost £200,000 and the League of Friends has already set
aside £100,000 from its funds. We are relying on the public to raise the
remainder.
If you would like to donate you can do so in the enclosed envelope and these
can be put in the collection boxes at Treuddyn Shops and at Reflections
hairdressers, Pontybodkin.
On the other hand if you prefer to put cash in the collecting box there is no
problem.
If you use the envelope and you are a taxpayer please complete your name
and address on the envelope so that we can claim tax back.

Flintshire County Council Community Based
Accommodation Support Service (previously
known as Warden service) for the Hafan Deg
and sheltered accommodation bungalows
The Warden is now called an `Accommodation Support Officer’
And can be contacted on 07917 070 789, Mon-Fri 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
The service is a flexible and responsive service, should your support needs
change before your next visit is due please use your alarm system to
contact your Accommodation Support Officer or telephone 01352 762898
9.00 am to 5.00 pm (Out of hours number is 0845 263 6603).
I have been contacted by some residents concerned about the current
warden/Accommodation Support officer leaving to work another area and
being replaced by rotating staff. I’ve been advised that the rotation will be
between just three members of staff and have been sent the following
information to explain the principle behind it.
Brief on Staff Rotation of Warden service
All changes within the sheltered housing warden service have been introduced
following extensive consultation with tenants, staff and stakeholders. In discussing
how the service could be improved, it was a resounding majority of tenants who
stated that the service should be delivered from a small team of familiar staff from
within their local community.
In order that all of the team are as equally familiar with the tenants, it is essential
that staff are rotated so that they are familiar and able to build effective
relationships with tenants. By only having one member of staff responsible for a
scheme, then we are creating the old way of working, whereby when that staff
member is off on annual leave or sick, then an unfamiliar member of the team
would be required to visit. Another disadvantage to this, staff working on their own
may be more inclined to become personally attached to tenants and adopt
practices that may not adhere to council’s policies and procedures. Also, there is a
greater likelihood that service standards can differ considerably from scheme to
scheme.
There are numerous advantages to the introduction of staff rotation and this has
been recognised by The Sheltered Housing Network (SHN) as best practice in
relation to staffing on sheltered housing schemes. Some of the benefits are:
15
•
•
•
•
•
Tenants get to know all team members and so there is no feeling of ‘it’s not
my warden’
Tenants are more likely to engage with the service as a whole rather than
viewing one individual as the service provider
The team as a whole can provide peer support to each other (eg.
discussing strategies for support etc.)
The team can adopt a more flexible approach to appropriate service
delivery (eg. if one scheme has significant issues requiring greater staffing
presence on occasions)
If one member is off (annual leave, training, sickness etc) another member
of the team can cover essential work as tenants are familiar with all the
team members and the tenant views that the service continues as normal.
The concept of moving staff after a set period of time can feel like continuing
change to tenants who may view this as an unnecessary disruption with little or no
benefit to them, however we are aiming to create a ‘seamless service’ where the
delivery and staffing of the service is provided in a way that enables tenants to feel
it is the same even when there are changes within the staff team.
I’ve had some complaints about the way the tree has been pruned on Ffordd y Llan
which I’ve raised with the tree officer. However, I was told at the time that the tree
has a lot of dead wood and may have to be removed.

Countryside code and dog walking
•
When you take your dog into the outdoors, always ensure it does not
disturb wildlife, farm animals, horses or other people by keeping it under
effective control. This means that you:
o
o
•
keep your dog on a lead, or
keep it in sight at all times, be aware of what it’s doing and be
confident it will return to you promptly on command
o ensure it does not stray off the path or area where you have a right
of access
Special dog rules may apply in particular situations, so always look out for
local signs – for example:
o
•
Dogs may be banned from certain areas that people use, or there
may be restrictions, byelaws or control orders limiting where they
can go.
o The access rights that normally apply to open country and
registered common land (known as ‘Open Access’ land) require
dogs to be kept on a short lead between 1 March and 31 July, to
help protect ground nesting birds, and all year round near farm
animals.
o At the coast, there may also be some local restrictions to require
dogs to be kept on a short lead during the bird breeding season,
and to prevent disturbance to flocks of resting and feeding birds
during other times of year.
It’s always good practice (and a legal requirement on ‘Open Access’ land)
to keep your dog on a lead around farm animals and horses, for your own
safety and for the welfare of the animals. A
farmer may shoot a dog which is attacking or
chasing farm animals without being liable to
compensate the dog’s owner. However, if cattle
or horses chase you and your dog, it is safer to
let your dog off the lead – don’t risk getting hurt
by trying to protect it. Your dog will be much
safer if you let it run away from a farm animal in
these circumstances and so will you.
Everyone knows how unpleasant dog mess is and it
can cause infections, so always clean up after your
dog and get rid of the mess responsibly – ‘bag it and bin it’. Make sure your
dog is wormed regularly to protect it, other animals and people.

Cemetery Extension Update
Following the work that has started at the cemetery
site creating a ditch and bund and updates in the
newsletter I was asked why the Cemetery department can’t use the existing
drain across the site shown on plans. I was told that it is not a cemetery
drain and they cannot connect cemetery drains to public drains
The FCC representative met with the drainage expert a few weeks ago on
site and found the ditch was working well but the ground was still very wet
after all the rain.
They are going to be doing some ground ripping and putting in channels to
see which way the water drains/falls.
Once the Lovells/Pennaf development has finished and they have erected
their boundary fence and landscaping, FCC will start the landscaping of the
cemetery site. The developer is supposed to put up a fence and then a
hedge to soften it.
There will be a few metres boundary between the bund and cemetery which
will be planted with trees and soft landscaping. The bund will be dressed
with top soil and seeded.
The Bro Brwynog
development is now not
due to be completed until
October/November time,
so it could be Spring
before the landscaping is
carried out by Flintshire
County Council’s
cemetery department.

MEASLES - what you should
know
10,000 (10%) children under the age of 18 who live within the Betsi
Cadwaladr University Health Board area are at risk of catching the disease
as they haven’t had the 2 MMR jabs needed. Due to poor uptake of the
MMR jab in the past, the 10-18 year old age group are particularly
vulnerable.
The vaccine is safe; the needle is tiny and takes seconds. Two doses of the
MMR gives a 99% protection against contracting the disease.
The Health Board has arranged vaccination sessions at all secondary
schools in North Wales to enable pupils who have missed their scheduled
MMR vaccinations to get protected -a full schedule and consent form can
be found http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/861/page/66476
Primary schools that have vaccination rate of less than 90% and primary
schools where there are more than 20 unvaccinated pupils are being
targeted.
North Wales is not within the current epidemic area. Therefore at present,
the advice to parents in North Wales is that they should ensure that their
children receive their MMR vaccination in accordance with the normal
schedule. With the first dose given between 12-13 months old and the
second dose at 3 years and four months old, there is no need to bring these
dates forward.
Health staff who are in direct patient contact including those who work
paediatrics, school nurses and GP surgeries are now being offered the
MMR vaccine.
Adults who were born before 1970 are presumed to have immunity and do
not need immunisation. Those born between 1970 and 1995 when the
MMR was introduced are not currently being called for vaccination,
however if they are travelling to the epidemic area they are advised to
contact their GP surgery or contact NHS Direct for further advice.
THERE ARE CASES WITHIN OUR AREA PLEASE READ!

Flintshire Trading Standards and Neighbourhood Watch are
concerned that local residents are being targeted by scammers.
These include different types of scams including mass marketed
mailing scams, ticket scams, bogus holiday clubs and door to
door selling.
Someone recently went round Treuddyn selling prints but
marketing them as original, he also pretended to have a disability
to play on the sympathy of the resident.
If you are concerned about any of the above, please do not
hesitate to contact Claire Edge, Trading Standards Enforcement
officer at Flintshire County Council on 01352 703328 or email

Ysgol Terrig
Islwyn Jones from Pen-y-Bryn
visited school to show his owls.
Everybody had the chance to
hold and touch the owls which
they thoroughly enjoyed.
Islwyn gave a demonstration,
the owls flying above our heads
while we were all lying down.
There wasn’t a sound to be
heard as it flew above our
heads, just as it does in the wild looking for prey. A fascinating
afternoon and we all learned a lot about the owls.
On the first day back after Easter year 4 pupils took a trip to Ysgol
Abermorddu to see the Flintshire Music tutors demonstrating their
instruments. The ensemble played many movie theme tunes with the
pupils having to guess their titles. They all had a lesson about each
instrument and learnt all about an orchestra.
Our year 5 pupils went on a 3 day trip to Cardiff, staying at the
Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. The pupils left early one Wednesday
morning, excited and looking forward to meet lots of new friends. On
their way into Cardiff the pupils stopped at St Fagan’s, The Museum of
Life. After eating lunch they walked round the old buildings that had
been re-built on the site; an old farmhouse with pigs in the outhouse
was a firm favourite. The children had the opportunity to see terraced
houses that were decorated from different periods of history. The
Anderson shelter in the back garden was fascinating, and there were
many objects in the 70’s house that brought back memories for the
29
teachers. After arriving at the Millennium Centre and unpacking the
children enjoyed a fun packed evening at ten pin bowling.
The following morning pupils went into Cardiff City Centre and visited
the Millennium Stadium, home of the 6 Nations winners. The Stadium
staff took the children on a superb tour visiting all areas including the
players changing room, the press conference room and running down the
tunnel. After waving goodbye to the tour guide the next stop was the
National Museum, giving the pupils a chance to say hello to the
dinosaurs before heading back to Cardiff Bay, Techniquest and the
Welsh Assembly building. Pupils also went to see the Norwegian Church
where Roald Dahl was christened.
Exhausted the
children headed
back to the Urdd
Centre for tea
before going to the
cinema. After a jam
packed day with not
much sleep the night
before, lights out
was much earlier!!!
Next morning, it was
time to say goodbye
to Cardiff, boarding
the bus heading for home, but not without stopping at the Big Pit, an
old working coal mine. The tour guide used to work in the coal mines
and was full of interesting information. Everyone had to wear a hard
hat and belt with a mask and a lamp before heading down into the mine.
The mine was cold and very dark, especially when told to switch the
lamps off! An amazing tour. A wonderful time was had and everyone
enjoyed themselves. Diolch am fod yn gwmni da blwyddyn 5.

The School held a sponsored activity to help raise funds for outdoor
resources. Speedmark hosted the event by bringing in a big inflatable
goal and everybody had a turn kicking a ball into the net. Each goal was
marked on the speed it hit the back of the net. We also had a
teachers event with Miss Rogers and Mrs Emberton doing very well . A
final was held and Miss Rogers took the title as winner. The children
are now enjoying the outdoor equipment purchased with the funds
raised by this event. A big thank you for all who sponsored them. Diolch

fantastic achievement. Da iawn chi blwyddyn 3 a 4
Mrs Henley and Year 4 left on the bus for their adventures at Glan

air. After arriving they were shown their rooms and unpacked their
clothes.

The children had a

exhilarating time on

the evening 10-pin

As part of the Urdd Celebrations
Treuddyn Community Council presented
the school with a timeline plaque. This is
a replica of the timeline that was unveiled
at the village hall in April to celebrate 90
years of the Urdd. To commemerate the
occasion the children had the opportunity
to interview local residents about their
memories of the Urdd and their
memories of the ‘good old days’. The
children heard some wonderful stories
about:
going for long walks in the fields during lunch breaks, having to go
outside to the toilet, playing on the headmistress bike while her back
was turned and lots more. An unforgetable day.

We’re pleased to say Jan’s back after a major operation and is
working alongside Sarah, our Youth Leader.
During the time it was closed the youth service did detached
work in the village, taking the young people to Mynydd Isa youth
club and bowling to Flint Pavilion.
The members have taken part in sponsored activities in the club
and 3 young people walked up Moel Famau in April with Sarah and

TREUDDYN UNDER 5’S
I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce Treuddyn under 5’s, a well
established playgroup based in the
Youth Hall on the same site as the
Ysgol Parc Y Llan/Ysgol Terrig. We
welcome children from Treuddyn and
surrounding areas, including those
attending other schools.
Sessions are run during school terms on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday from 12:45 to 3:15pm at a cost of £6
per session. The Playgroup is for children aged 2 years, with early
entitlement funded places being available.
A Playgroup Lunch Club session is also held on the same days,
between 11:45am and 12:45pm. Playgroup Lunch Club is available
for all children registered at the Playgroup at an additional cost
of £3 per session. As part of the Playgroup Lunch Club, the
playgroup supervisor will collect the children from school
nurseries in Treuddyn. A packed lunch should be provided with
your child, unless your child has their lunch provided by the Ysgol
Parc Y LLan/Ysgol Terrig school canteen.
The Playgroup sessions provide activities that encourage the
development of children's social, physical, language, creative and
emotional skills. Our main language is English, but incidental
Welsh is introduced and encouraged during sessions.
37
The Playgroup is a member of Wales PPA and registered with
CSSIW and Estyn. The last CSSIW and Estyn assessment of the
Playgroup was very supportive of the work being done in the
group and the standards being maintained.
All staff are very friendly caring individuals, with a shared
wealth experience and commitment that has made the Playgroup a
success.
As the Playgroup is a registered charity, we carry out fundraising
events throughout the year in order to ensure we have sufficient
funds maintain the group.
The Playgroup is formally governed by a committee, comprising a
Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, and ordinary members.
Parents and members of the community are encouraged to
volunteer to join the committee.
If you would like any further information, would like to arrange a
visit to see the Playgroup in action or to book your child a place
at this group whilst places are available, please do not hesitate to
get in contact during playgroup session times on 01352-771232.

Childminding in Treuddyn
Treuddyn and District Childminding group was established 12
years ago by a group of local registered childminders in order to
provide support to childminders in the area. They meet regularly
and organise group outings and events for the children in their
care.
The childminders have many years of childcare experience
between them; they are all registered with CSSIW and fully
insured. They are also members of PACEY (Professional
association for childcare and early years) the new name of NCMA
(National childminding association).
Care is provided in a warm, friendly home environment which is
both fun and stimulating where babies and children are
encouraged to develop and learn through play using both English
and Welsh language.
As well as offering full and part time care the childminders are
able to provide a local school drop off and pick up service, before
and after school care and holiday cover.
If you are a childminder and are interested in joining our group
or are interested in our childcare services please contact:

The Wales Coastal Path in Flintshire
As well as stunning scenery, diverse
views and landscapes, the Flintshire se

rich heritage spanning several centuries
and there are interpretation boards
informing you along the way as well as
view points and seating. If anyone wants
to walk or even cycle one way along a
section, rail and road public
transportation is easily accessible and frequent along the route. There are
points to stop for refreshments and comfort breaks along the way, we
stopped at `The Queensferry’, the first pub along the Welsh Coastal path
from England, the Yacht in Oakenholt, Abakhan and Talacre. There was
also a pub open in Ffynongroyw that had old photos which was tempting
but we were pushed for time.
We started off at the Welsh border in Saltney which is
depicted by standing stones from Halkyn, engraved
with images of animals and people to show how they
are both of importance to the area. We walked along
the dual coast and cycle path beside the River Dee
past old moorings, tethered horses, walkers, cyclists of
all ages and ability, plus interesting buildings of
industry and heritage
such as the Old John
Summers building.
We stopped off at the
Queensferry H otel, by the bridge for
refreshments, a lovely welcoming pub.
We were fortunate to witness a tidal bore
along the river, something I’d never seen
before. There is a new interpretation
panel at Connah’s Quay which describes
the whole of Flintshire Coastal path; there are also great new viewpoints.
This first section to Flint was 11 miles.
47
The second day covered 16 miles and
started at Flint Castle which was the first
castle built by Edward I in Wales. The
walk from here to Mostyn is spectacular,
taking in a variety of views and
landscapes, passing through small docks
and natural environments surrounded by
wildflowers, estuary views, salt marshes
and nature along a gentle path.
There was an unusually high tide and I
had to take my shoes off and paddle at
one point by the Duke of Lancaster,
which added to the adventure although
there was a high tide alternative route I
think I should have taken! We walked
inland a little way avoiding Mostyn
Docks, an alternative route has just
been created through Ffynnongroyw
woods which adds an extra mile but is
well worth it if you have time.
We finished our walk along the beach from
Talacre after first getting an icecream,
passing the famous lighthouse and finishing
at the border in Gronant. It was great walking
along the beach which added to the variation
of the walk.
I would like to thank everyone that sponsored
the event. We're still collecting money in but
it may be just over a thousand pounds.
Flintshire County Council’s Coastal Unit and other FCC officers have worked really
hard, showing innovation, determination and dedication, often using grant funding
with CCW money and much valued sponsorship from local business’ to make the
Coastal Path such a wonderful feature. They continue to improve and look after it,
keeping it open and well maintained for all to enjoy. For more information, contact
Flintshire Countryside Service on 01244 814 931 or visit Flintshire’s website.

The Queen Mother bear
Local resident, Mair Blackman
told me a very interesting story
about when she was famous in
2000 for creating a special
bear.
It all started off when she made
a bear for a lady as a favour
following a pattern. It was so
popular she then started
making bears for friends and
charity. Mair would collect
material and items from charity
shops and fairs and also order
items from specialist suppliers
advertised in magazines. The
bears would be uniquely
dressed with shoes, clothes
and accessories often to depict
the character they were made
for.
One day Mair heard about a
teddy bear fair on Lord Lichfield’s estate. She went along to it and saw a
stall with a banner saying `Libearty’ above it. It was a charity that helped
liberate bears from captivity back into the wild. From then on Mair started
fundraising for that charity. One event she held was a teaddy bears tea
party.
Mair was asked if she would like to donate a bear for a charity auction in
London.
It was the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday that year and this inspired Mair to
make a special bear to commemorate it. Conscious of wanting to make
sure it was her own work she created her own pattern for the bear. Using
inspiration from a photograph of the Queen Mother, Mair made clothes from
a finely woven turquoise fabric to match what she was wearing. She found
49
a broach in a craft centre and adapted it with silver earings that she had.
The bear also had a watch, diamante earrings, pearls, hat, handbag and
walking stick. Mair used car spray paint to colour the hat, bag and ballet
shoes to match the outfit. Great attention was paid to detail.
Before sending the bear to auction for charity, Mair wrote to the Queen
Mother to ask for permission as she didn’t want to offend her in any way
and received a letter back from her lady-in-waiting.
The first Mair knew that her bear had become famous was when she was
waiting in a consultant’s room with the Daily papers on the table and she
saw a picture of the bear. The story was then picked up by the Daily Mirror
and Hello magazine.
Mair was asked by the Daily Mail if she would make bears of all the Royal
Family, they said they would commission it with funds in advance. They
phoned three times but because they wanted it straight away, Mair decided
she would not do it. It had taken three months to make the Queen Mother
bear.
Mair was lated contacted by a Japanese company who asked if she would
make a bear for the Japanese royal family to commemorate the birth of
their first baby. The company contacted `Deans of Pontypool’ who were
commissioned to work on Mair’s design. The scout had wanted someone
with a Royal connection and Mair was presented with one of the finished
limited edition bears, pictured below.

Weatherwise
MARCH 2013
March 5th brought a touch of spring with 16 ºC but from about 9pm on the
22nd a white blanket of snow descended overnight to give 30cm on level
ground within 12 hours which, continuing for more than 48 hours increased
to 50cm. Drifting produced depths very much deeper with tree and
structural damage everywhere and many blocked roads. It was a month of
easterly winds and all blamed on a weakened and flattened jet stream which
had moved south across Portugal and Spain giving poor weather there.
Movement north was blocked by a high pressure system from Scandinavia
and Russia, which brought consistent east winds and the coldest March for
50 years. The total number of days with frost is now 91 compared with 69 in
2012 when shirt sleeves were the norm. Contrasting the precipitation reveals
that the year so far is wetter by 134.75 mm. Precipitation in the table is
mostly melted snow.

APRIL 2013
The giant snow piles were slow to leave even along less heavily inundated
field margins and could be seen through to the 12th in spite of a few sunny
days. Stormy weather arrived soon after, giving the impression that spring
had vanished and that a brief touch of summer had followed winter and then
had switched to autumn in about four weeks. Sadly that storm felled the
Pontfadog oak. The jet stream had moved north and was bringing back its
mischievious little friends from the Atlantic. Mixed weather followed from
the 19th with short bursts of rain and hail spoiling the sun but the month did
end on a beautiful day highlighting the great contrast in precipitation with
April 2012 with the annual difference drastically cut to 57.75mm. Frost was
still prevalent through this April resulting in a winter total of 105 days
against 80 in 2012.
