True Patriot Love 2012 Annual Report
True Patriot Love
2012 Annual Report
Our Vision
For too many years,
our men and women in uniform,
and their families, have lived
and served far from the thoughts
of most everyday Canadians.
Our vision is to repair that
disconnect – to permanently
bridge the military and civilian
worlds, and to ensure that our
military families always have
private dollars at their disposal
to address the various gaps
inevitably left unfunded by
government.

We were also able to fund $647,861 for important
TPL programs and initiatives to help further our
mission of bridging our military and civilian
worlds. One of these initiatives was a multinational Symposium at the Canadian Embassy
in Washington D.C. in partnership with the
White House on the stigmatization of mental
health in the military. The Symposium was
successful in creating collaboration between
representatives from charities, governments
and the private sectors in Canada, the U.S.
and the U.K. At the request of the participants,
this fall we are hosting a second Symposium at
multi-year funding partnerships, which will
reduce our fundraising costs over the longerterm – a top priority for our Directors. Already
in 2013, we have established multi-year
partnerships with Bell Canada (a $1 million
program to support community mental health
initiatives for Canadian military families) and
Scotiabank (an over half-million dollar program
to support ill and injured soldiers). In addition,
we are developing more in-house capabilities
to launch grassroots fundraising initiatives
and hiring a VP of Development to secure
major gifts.

Our Mission
Founded in 2009,
True Patriot Love is a national charity dedicated to honouring
the sacrifices of military families and veterans in three key
areas:
Family health and support

and rehabilitation

and wellbeing
care, kids’ camps, child and

(PTSD), grief, separation,
Emergency childcare, medical
substance abuse and more.
To date, we have raised a
record $14 million to help
fund the positive actions of more than forty-five other charities
across the country, including the Military Families Fund, Soldier On,
32 Military Family Resource Centres, Outward Bound and the
Veterans Transition Program.
We are bridging our military and civilian worlds by providing
opportunities for Canadians to connect with military families so they
can learn about their sacrifices first-hand.
Our Toronto Tribute Dinner, the most concrete
expression of our mission, is the largest
fundraiser for military families in Canada,
bringing together in one event a record number
of everyday Canadians, corporate, political
and community leaders, and members of the
Canadian Armed Forces and their families.

Areas of Funding
In 2012,
TPL funded $2,769,811 in programs and
donations to further our mission. We stepped
in where government was unable by
providing military charities with:
n
$ 815,000 for physical health and
$798,900 for family health and supports,
and;
n
Michael MacKay
rehabilitation;
n
$470,050 for mental health and wellbeing.
The largest recipient was the Military
Families Fund, receiving funds in all three
categories, including $500,000 for vehicles
and home renovations for ill and injured
soldiers, $300,000 for assessments, therapy
and respite for military families with children
with special needs (like autism), and $100,000
for families with children requiring tutoring.
In recognition of the unique challenges of
military family life, we provided $270,000 to
Military Family Resource Centres across
Canada to run a wide range of community
programs, including family counselling,
emergency childcare and programs for
teens. We also provided $100,000 for
children of deployed and recently deployed
soldiers to go to Camp Maple Leaf and leave
the stresses of military life behind.
The Canadian Armed Forces estimates
that there are at least 3,900 soldiers out of
40,000 who served in Afghanistan suffering
from Operational Stress Injuries like PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. Because the
stigma associated with mental illness
prevents many from seeking treatment, last
year TPL funded Outward Bound ($242,250)
and the Veterans Transition Program

($250,000). These peer-to-peer
support programs for previously
deployed veterans have a proven
track record of linking veterans
dealing Operation Stress Injuries,
like Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder, addictions and family
violence to supportive peer
networks and community mental
health and addiction programs.
To further address the stigma
of mental health in the military, TPL held
our first Multi-National Symposium
on Mental Health in the Military at the
Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
in coordination with the White House. With
over 100 attendees from the charitable,
government and corporate sectors in
Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., the Symposium
provided a unique opportunity for multinational collaboration and sharing of
research and best practices among sectors.
For the second year in a row, True Patriot
Love partnered with the Vimy Foundation on
Leadership Under Fire, a tour of important
Canadian battlefield sites, cemeteries and
monuments in France. This tour enables
participants to experience Canada’s rich

“It was truly a memorable experience that I won’t soon forget. Everything
was perfect[…] The attention to detail and effort to make the trip smooth
and enjoyable was really nice. This allowed everyone to enjoy themselves
and soak in the special trip. It was well organized and everyone from TPL
and VF were a pleasure to be with. The group on the trip was an excellent
cross section and thoroughly enjoyable.”
