10 Years of Support of BRAG and
The Market at Hague
Looking Forward to the Next 10 Years
In 2015, Binford Redevelopment and Growth (BRAG) celebrated a
decade of being a cornerstone in the northeast corner of Indianapolis.
From day one, the goal of BRAG was to improve the quality of life for
businesses and residents in this area. Mobilizing local businesses,
residents, government officials, police officers, schools, churches, and
volunteers, BRAG has been a catalyst for improvements and change in
this area. Some of our big wins over the past decade include:
• Attracting businesses and promoting economic development –
particularly at the 71st/Binford intersection;
• Streamlining a residential and business crime watch system to
notify citizens of relevant crime in the area and encourage safe
crime prevention practices;
• Establishing a farmer’s market for the BRAG community that
promotes healthy eating, a sense of community, and shopping
local;
• Working with committees and government officials to construct
trails and sidewalks in the area – most recently, the beautiful 71st
Street Trail;
• Maintaining the physical appearance of the area through planting
and maintaining trees and flowers and coordinating trash pick-up
days.
While this list barely scratches the surface of all that BRAG has
accomplished throughout the last ten years, one thing is clear: BRAG
could not exist without the ideas, support, and commitment from
local businesses and residents like you. If this is your first time reading
the directory, I encourage you to keep reading so you can learn more
about our organization and the local businesses in this area. Money
spent at a local business generates 3.5 times more wealth for the local
economy compared to money spent at chain or big box retailers – so
please buy local when you can.
Looking to the future of the organization, we want your input on
what we can do to continue to make this area a great place to live
and work. We have a very exciting 2016 calendar and encourage you
to learn more about how you can get involved. You can check out our
website at www.binford71.org or email me directly at
[email protected] with any questions, comments or suggestions.
On behalf of the BRAG Board of Directors, thank you for your
support of our organization, and we look forward to working with
you in 2016!
Kim Mathews

Hello Neighbors!
Do you enjoy the convenience of grocery shopping and
running errands near your home?
In 2005, a group of concerned citizens and neighborhood leaders came together
to address economic and quality of life issues facing the residents living near
Binford Boulevard. That effort to “Fight the Blight!” resulted in the formation of
Binford Redevelopment and Growth, Inc. (BRAG.) Ten years later BRAG is a strong
and vibrant grassroots neighborhood organization with community support from
Dean Road over to Sargent Road, 56th Street to 82nd Street.
The seven major initiatives tailored to our community came about as a result of
community-wide visioning meetings and creative input and hard work from
neighbors. These initiatives are fundamental to maintaining a great neighborhood
and a thriving business environment.
1. Business Development and Retention / Networking – new businesses
have come to our area creating hundreds of jobs. This generated an abundance of
convenient shopping near 71st Street and Binford and now along Shadeland
Avenue.
2. Crime Watch and Prevention – a business and residential crime watch
network exists to keep you informed and aware. In 2011, the Marion County
Prosecutors Office awarded BRAG as Crime Fighter of the Year.
3. Trails and Connectivity - The long term goal of the Trails and Connectivity
committee is to build sidewalks and multi-use trails throughout the BRAG
community. Construction on the trail on 71st from Lakeknoll to Hague will be done
this fall. Look for construciton to begin on a trail on Hague Road from Fall Creek to
82nd Street.
4. Schools - Within the BRAG area are Lawrence Township Schools and
Washington Township Schools and a number of private schools. The area has solid,
stable school systems that serve students of all academic abilities. This helps
maintain your property value!
5. Beautification: Parks and Greenspaces – BRAG works to enhance the
physical appearance of Binford Boulevard and Skiles Test Nature Park. Volunteers
planted and continue to maintain hundreds of trees and thousands of flowers &
shrubs and planting beds throughout the service area.
6. The The Market at Hague – The Binford Farmers Market is now The Market
at Hague. The market is run by BRAG and offers fresh Indiana produced food and
artisan products every Saturday, May-October, 8am to 12 noon at 7800 N. Hague
Rd., in the Lawrence North High School north parking lot. marketathague.com for
details.
For more information or to find out about other ways you can support BRAG’s
efforts, please call or email Mark Flanary. [email protected] or 317-408-4323.

We Need a Cool Sign for the Barn
The 2015 season brought about a new storage barn to the Market at
Hague! We cannot thank each and every one of you enough who donated
to this new addition. The new 20x12 foot barn provides storage space for all
of the market equipment such as tents, tables, wagons, traffic barrels, tabletop items, direction signs, and more. The new barn is located at the back
end of the market on the north side of the parking lot. Be sure to stop by
and check it out during the 2016 season.
As you visit the barn, you may notice there is something missing. A sign!
For the 2016 season, we need your help to dress up the barn with a sign
that exemplifies everything the Market at Hague stands for; local farmers,
sustainable food and YOU, our community! A Market at Hague barn sign
will help us solidify the market brand and put the finishing touches on this
new addition. Please consider making a donation to our barn sign fund and
help us reach this goal for 2016!

Enhanced Crime Watch Efforts
IMPD has reached out to neighborhood organizations asking that
we encourage all residents and area businesses to step up crime
watch efforts. IMPD is concerned that citizens are not reporting
suspicious activity and neighborhood and business crimes.
When to dial 911?
• 911 is the number to dial to report criminal activity in progress, fire, medical
emergencies, shots fired, any life threatening incident, and suspicious activity.
• Stay calm. Give your name, location and nature of the emergency.
• Answer the 911 Dispatcher’s questions as accurately as possible.
• Never hang up on the 911 Dispatcher until you are told to do so.
• Do not dial 911 for non-emergency situations.
• For non-emergency situations, such as noisy neighbors or a stolen bicycle use the
Non-Emergency number: 327-3811
How 911 Works?
Example: What to do if you are looking out of your window and notice a person
breaking into your neighbor's home….
• You should immediately go to the phone and dial 911.
• Even while you are talking, an officer is already on the way. Try to remain calm
and answer all of the dispatcher's questions to the best of your ability - we
understand you may be excited.
• DO NOT HANG UP! For the safety of the officer who is on the way and all
people involved, it is very important that the dispatcher on the phone gets all the
necessary information about the emergency and the suspects.
Information most needed:
• Is anyone injured?
• What happened?
• Suspect description
• When did it happen?
• Vehicle description/License Plate
• Where it happened
Number
(address/intersection/landmark)
• Telephone number of the person
• Direction of travel of suspect
calling
• Did you see any weapons?
• Who is involved?
Never tell a 911 operator that a situation is more serious than it really is just to get
faster service. It is against the law to intentionally give false information to the
police.
911 Emergency Examples:
• Robbery, burglary or larceny in progress (i.e.: Someone breaking into your home
or vehicle or one of your neighbors' homes or vehicles now)
• Shootings
• Fires or Medical emergency
• Traffic injury - crashes
• Person asking for help
• Domestic Violence / Abuse
• Fights or displays of weapons
• Criminal activity
• Any suspicious activity happening at
the time of your call.
8
Non-Emergency Examples:
A non-emergency call is simply a request for police service that is not a life or death
situation, and it is not “in progress”. The non-emergency line is (317) 327-3811.
An officer can handle some of these calls over the phone such as:
• Vandalism (not in progress)
• Stolen property (not in progress)
• Criminal or Suspicious Activity
• Loud Party
(not in progress)
BRAG RESIDENTIAL AND BUSINESS CRIME WATCH
Engaged Citizens Share Information
Safe neighborhoods require people communicating with each other. Reports of
criminal activity must go beyond a 911 call to the police. You must let your
residential and business neighbors know a crime has occurred. You should report
the crime through the BRAG Crime Watch Network so we can broadcast the crime
or suspicious activity to your neighbors and area businesses. Through email
communication it is possible to put all of the surrounding neighborhoods and
businesses on HIGH ALERT when a criminal incident or suspicious activity occurs in
any neighborhood or business area. Your neighbors may be able to provide
additional information. Your neighbors can be on alert for similar activity or take
measures to reduce the opportunities for criminal activity.
If your neighborhood does not have a Crime Watch effort….start one! You can
contact the BRAG crime watch coordinators to find out how to start your
neighborhood or business crime watch organization. We can help you get started!
For information about joining the BRAG Business Crime Watch Network and
obtaining the crime watch alerts visit the BRAG website, binford71.org or send an
email to [email protected].
For information about joining the BRAG Residential Crime Watch Network and
obtaining the crime watch alerts visit the BRAG website, binford71.org or send an
email to [email protected].
Be the eyes and ears of your community! If you SEE something, SAY something.
Police Satellite Station
Watch for the opening of the new Police Satellite Station at 71st and Shadeland,
inside the Castleton United Methodist Church facility.
The satellite station is used by North District officers to file reports, as a gathering
point for officers, and occasional North District Roll Call. The station offers a law
enforcement presence in the area as well as provides a service to the officers. The
office contains a small refrigerator and cabinet stocked with beverages and snacks
for the officers.
The office was created and managed by volunteers and is always in need of
refreshments, soft drinks, bottled water, candy, chips and snack donations for the
police officers who stop by. BRAG makes regular grocery runs to stock the station
and eagerly accepts monetary donations to fund the effort. Please send your check
marked “Satellite Station” to BRAG, 5868 E. 71st Street E-104, Indianapolis, IN
46220-4078. Monetary donations are tax deductible.

BRAG is Proud of Its Schools
BRAG is proud of its schools. Each year, all the public and private schools of
Washington Township and Lawrence Township are recognized for academic
excellence and for fostering top level opportunities for students to grow,
share and achieve. We routinely share many of those accomplishments in our
BRAG email bulletins and on our website. In this edition of the BRAG
Directory, we focus on yet another example of the unique advantages
offered by our schools.
Washington Township Middle Schools Empower Students To
Rise Above On Challenge Day
Early in January 2016, Eastwood Middle School – along with two other
Washington Township middle schools – hosted a widely-lauded Challenge
Day event. Challenge Day programs are highly focused and designed to
build empathy and a sense of shared community among students as they
enter an age in which they all too often face bullying, teasing and
stereotyping. The organization around Challenge Days is national in scope,
but Washington Township has recognized its value and signed on as part of
its effort to foster a healthy, proud, and strong student body that is open to
change and to challenging the status quo.
Husband and wife team Yvonne and Rich Dutra-St. John co-founded the
Challenge Day organization in 1987. Sharing memories of the difficulties
they faced as children, the founders set their sights on the lofty goal of
creating a world where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated despite
emotional turmoil at home or at school. They recognized the steep
challenges in achieving this goal and, not surprisingly, the act of facing that
challenge is one of the fundamental teachings of their programs. Indeed,
the hashtag ‘Be the Change’ is commonly connected to the founders’ efforts
to spread their message. The Challenge Day program thus seeks to instill
within students a belief in themselves as well as a belief in their power to
effect change.
The organization set out to fulfill that core mission by fostering hands-on
programs that celebrate diversity, truth and expression and that reveal the
power of empathy and shared connections. While it offers both workplace
programs and transformational workshops for adults and older teens,
Challenge Day is best known for its school programs. Through those
programs, Challenge Day has reached over a million students and has been
featured nationally on The Oprah Winfrey Show, MTV, the Emmy Awardwinning documentary, Teen Files: Surviving High School and in the book
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul.
Challenge Day’s signature effort is a 6½ hour experiential program for
approximately 100 students and 25 adults. With the assistance of a
Challenge Day facilitator, the students find common ground with their peers
and teachers, develop respect for others, learn they are not alone in their
16

feelings and worries, and find compassion and connection in a safe
environment. Even better, the students get to have fun with the event. The
facilitators guide the participants through a carefully-designed series of
games, activities, and trust-building exercises that break down the walls of
separation and create new levels of empathy and respect. Words can never
do justice to the in-person experience, but a deeper glimpse can be gained
from video on the organization’s website (e.g., www.challengeday.org/howchallenge-day-works.php and www.challengeday.org/videos.php) and on the
organization’s youtube channel (www.youtube.com/user/ChallengeDay).
As recognized by Challenge Day, bullying, violence, emotional trauma and
alienation are a part of a typical school day for millions of young people.
These troubles tend to reduce learning, increase behavioral problems, and
can result in physical and emotional harm. The Challenge Day school
program seeks to reduce those risk factors by calling out the causes of
teasing, bullying, and stereotyping, teaching tools for peaceful conflict
resolution and for healthy expression of emotions, and building a sense of
empathy, community, and positive change.
Those results have yielded benefits. Students completing the program have
described it as the ‘best day of their lives’. Based on the organization’s 201314 survey, 97% of adults and 94% of students would recommend the
program to friends and family. 90% reported a greater recognition of the
effects of bullying, a deeper understanding of others’ experiences, and a
stronger awareness of how their actions affect others. 80% reported a
stronger connection with peers and adults, more self-acceptance, a greater
likelihood to help others, and an improved sense of hope for the future.
Washington Township schools have clearly recognized the value of
Challenge Day programs. All three township middle schools have hosted the
program for several years running. The programs have the support of the
community as well. This year’s program at Eastwood was sponsored by The
Cronk Family, Krieg DeVault, Mike Matt, Ed Negron, the Advancement
Center for Washington Township Schools and North Central Alumni, and
Indy Sports and Entertainment.
Our BRAG schools continue to excel not only by their academic success
rates, but by their attention to the students’ well-being, by their
thoughtfulness for the future and the comprehensive needs of the students,
17
BRAG is Proud of Its Schools
and by their ability to translate all those aims into a system that produces a
successful and prepared student body. Eastwood Middle School and the
Washington Township school system are shining stars in our neighborhood
and worth bragging about. Please continue to follow the school district’s
efforts via its website, on twitter and on Facebook.

Tribute to Bill Mays
When many think of Indianapolis business
excellence, William “Bill” Mays is typically at the
top of the list. The Evansville, Indiana, native
established Mays Chemical Company in 1980 and
due to his steadfastness and strong values, the
company became one of the world’s largest
chemical distributors and a source for chemicals,
related raw materials and chemical management
expertise.
Mays took his ambitions to higher heights. His
other entrepreneurial endeavors included
television stations, golf courses and, notably,
recovering and investing in the Indianapolis
Recorder Newspaper. Mr. Mays passed away Dec. 4,
2014, on his 69th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Rose Mays, and
daughters, Heather Mays-Wood and Kristin Mays-Corbitt. Prior to his death,
Mays passed the Mays Chemical Company torch to his daughter MaysCorbitt, who had been a longtime employee. This past year under her
leadership, Mays Chemical Company has been going strong.
“From the top to the bottom, we have a legacy in the business world and
the community. Everyone has continued to operate with Bill Mays’ principles
in mind,” said Mays-Corbitt. “If you knew him, you knew those values. They
were very much community-oriented, and through our work, we live those
values out each day.”
Mays-Corbitt is able to sustain the familyowned business with the help of
her experienced leadership team. Her staff consists of vested employees Eric
Gillispie, Jeanette Jones and Matthew Murphy. Fresh talent has also been
added to the ranks: Thomas Douglass and George Hughes.
“Everyone on the management team has a certain drive. They’re all very
much committed to Bill Mays and his philosophies, even the people who
didn’t get a chance to interact with him or meet him,” said Mays-Corbitt.
“Everyone wants to work for a winning company. They are committed to
making sure Mays Chemical is a place that is constantly growing and
thriving.”
Mays-Corbitt’s business savvy has contributed to the continued success of
the company. The family atmosphere, teamwork and fellowship also make
Mays Chemical Company a stellar enterprise. “We work hard together, we
play hard together and we fundraise together,” said Mays-Corbitt. “We’re
going to continue on our growth trajectory and create jobs in the
community. We are also going to stay committed to giving back to the
community.”

Beautification: Parks and Greenspace
Welcome to area resident Chris Dossman who is now chairing the Beautification
initiative on the BRAG board. Chris is passionate about keeping the area looking
good and will be reaching out to you, our BRAG residents and business neighbors,
to help with beautification projects in the spring and fall. Keep up to date by
watching the BRAG facebook page and signing up for the BRAG and Market at
Hague weekly newsletters. Sign up at binford71.org.
Accessibility: Trails, Sidewalks and
Connectivity
When BRAG was formed over ten years ago, the primary focus was to revitalize
the retail corners at 71st and Binford. This effort resulted in vibrant retail
destinations featuring a variety of shopping, dining and service options. As the
organization continued to grow in its membership and scope of influence, the city
began to take notice. The Department of Metropolitan Development conducted The
Binford Village Study to determine a long term development plan for the area. The
Greater Indianapolis Neighborhood Initiative (GINI) awarded BRAG a grant to
further study our needs and help with our development into a viable, thriving
neighborhood organization. A common result of both of these studies was that
while BRAG has a blend of retail, schools, places of worship, restaurants and other
destinations within a 10 minute walk of many homes, these were only safely
accessible by driving due to the lack of safe walkways.
As a result, a committee was formed within BRAG to address this deficiency. And
although the names of the committee have changed over the years (the Pedestrian
Access Committee, INSTEPP, and now Trails and Connectivity Committee) the goal
has remained the same: to create safe sidewalks or trails that will provide the
opportunity to bike, walk, run and otherwise be connected to the amenities in the
BRAG area.
The committee recognized that this goal would be achieved in incremental
efforts. The major milestones that were the initial focus were:
• Provide connectivity along 4 major thoroughfares
- 71st Street from Allisonville Road to Hague Road
- 75th Street from Graham Road to Hague Road
- Hague Road from 71st Street to 82nd Street
- Shadeland Avenue from 82nd Street to Fall Creek
• Provide safe pedestrian crossings at major intersections.
22
As of 2015 the following projects in the BRAG area have been completed or have
received funding and are in progress:
• The DPW built sidewalks along 62nd street from Allisonville road to Binford
Boulevard
• INDOT constructed sidewalks on both sides of 75th street from Binford to
Shadeland Avenue
• The DPW constructed a multi use path on 62nd street from Allisonville Road to
Rural Street
• A sidewalk has been build on 71st street from Steinmeier Drive to Graham
Road
• A shared bike lane has been built on Allisonvile Road
• The 71st street multi-use path from Lakeknoll to Hague opened in October
• A multi use path will be constructed on Hague Road from Fall Creek to 82nd
street
BRAG residents have been behind these efforts as they have worked closely with
city agencies to make these happen. We continue to work toward our goal of
making our streets safely accessible for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public
transportation users so that those who do not, choose not to or can no longer drive
can enjoy the wonderful amenities of our BRAG community.

BRAG Professionals
BRAG Young Professionals (YP) started in late 2013 with a goal of
engaging the young and “young at heart” in the BRAG area. After two full
years of events and programs, the decision has been made to combine both
BRAG YP and the BRAG Business Alliance (BBA) into one big initiative for
2016 – BRAG Professionals. We feel that this new name will encourage
more businesses and residents to get involved in networking and service
events as the term encompasses people of all ages. We also want to
continue to add value to our BRAG businesses and feel that hosting events
where they can promote their products and services is a great benefit!
The new joining of BBA and BRAG YP means that we have an exciting
calendar of events planned for 2016! Our goal is to continue quarterly
breakfast meetings that include a speaker and a chance for you to promote
yourself and your business. We are open to hearing from you about topics
that you would like to see and if you are willing to host an event at your
business, that is fantastic! We hope that 2016 will be a year of learning and
engaging with fellow BRAG businesses and encourage your participation in
this process.
To join the BRAG Professionals email list, join the BRAG Professionals
Committee, receive a calendar of events, or for any questions or
suggestions, you can contact Kim Mathews ([email protected]) or Brian
Queck ([email protected]). Thank you for supporting BRAG and we look
forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

The Market at Hague
The Market at Hague welcomes you to the
upcoming 2016 season. As the winter weeks pass us
by, remember that locally produced, fresh, and
healthy food options are coming right along with
springtime. Whether you are a long time shopper or
stopping in for your first time, the Market at Hague
promises to have a variety of local Indiana products to chose from.
This past season the market completed its second year at its new and
permanent location at Lawrence North High School. With tremendous support
from Lawrence Township and Community Health Network, season two went
off without a hitch. This season we welcomed back some old favorite vendors
and as well as a number of new vendors! Garcia’s Garden stole the show with
their lush and nutritious Asian style greens while Inga’s Popcorn introduced
irresistible cheesy and caramel popcorn varieties. We also welcomed fresh
loose-leaf teas from ADH Teas and Leona’s Kitchen served up grass-fed beef
breakfast burritos and unforgettable sweet treats!
Not only did the market welcome new vendors we also made great
community connections and hosted a variety of community groups. It was our
pleasure to introduce Breathing Space Yoga, Boy Scout troops, The Central
Indiana Lab Rescue and Adaoption, Walk Against Alzheimer’s, Lawrence
Township School District, and more to our market community. If you are a
local community group interested in tabling at the market for 2016 please
contact us.
It was a great year for SNAP at the market! Almost $3000 were spent on
local Indiana fruit, vegetables, and value added items. We want to continue
growing this number, so if you know any SNAP users, encourage them to
double their benefits at the market this season!
The upcoming season kicks off May 7th 2016. Look for us every Saturday
rain or shine through October from 8 am to
12 Noon. RecycleForce collects your
unwanted electronic recyclables every first
Saturday of each month and Artisan
weekends are every second Saturday. We
invite you to join in the lively farmers market
atmosphere, learn where your food comes
from, and gather with friends and neighbors,
to support hardworking Indiana farmers,
The market is proud to accept the
artisans, and business owners. Convenient
Hoosier Works Card to provide
parking is located near the football field and
access to fresh fruits and vegetables
along the front of the school building.

Celebrating BRAG’s 10 Year Anniversary
How do you put into words the last ten years? What started out as a
handful of concerned citizens bloomed into a nonprofit organization that
focuses on improving the quality of life for the northeast corner of
Indianapolis – the “BRAG” area. Working with public officials, business
owners and residents, BRAG has accomplished so much – from beautification
of Binford Boulevard, to the Farmer’s Market, to the economic
redevelopment of 71st and Binford including hundreds of new jobs,
completion of the 71st Street Trail and much more!
What better way to celebrate all of BRAG’s accomplishments than to host
a 10-year celebration at beautiful Hillcrest Country Club? On June 11, BRAG
did just that! With just over 100 people in attendance, we started the
evening at 7pm
with a beer tasting
courtesy of
Monarch Beverage
and Bier Brewery,
and bourbon
tasting courtesy of
Glazers Distributors.
Enjoying a variety
of craft beer and
spirits, attendees
were able to learn
more about the
achievements of the
neighborhood since BRAG’s formation in 2005.
Each table was decorated with a centerpiece to represent each initiative –
Trails/Connectivity, Farmer’s Market, Business Alliance, Beautification, Young
Professionals, Crime Watch, and Schools. In the background, a slideshow of
pictures from throughout the years played to give everyone a visual
representation of BRAG’s 10 year successes. Dan Hodgkins and Anne Yeakle,
who work in the
Community Benefit
office for Community
Hospital, circled the
room to ask for
attendee’s input in a
survey focused on
community concerns.
At 8pm, BRAG
Executive Director Kas
Vargo welcomed
guests, introduced
53
Celebrating BRAG’s 10 Year Anniversary
(continued from page 53)
board members, and discussed a few of the key accomplishments from the
past ten years. She noted a few special guests – Jane Lommel, founder and
the first board chair, Kai Binford, wife of Thomas Binford, state
representative Christina Hale and city councilwoman Christine Scales.
Afterward, Dan Hodgkins delivered results of the survey – citing schools,
crime, and connectivity as the top three concerns. Following this, a delicious
dinner was served! Hillcrest’s Chef Justin carefully prepared the meal using
ingredients from the Market at Hague including product from Tulip Tree
Creamery, Viking Lamb, Garcia’s Gardens, Grandma Jane’s Pies, Homestead
Heritiage, Tonia’s on a Roll and many others. Coffee was provided by Harvest
Café Roasters. The meal offered guests a chance to see vendor’s products in
action.
At 9pm, the winners of the raffle items and 50/50 cash drawing were
announced. Raffle ticket winners took gift baskets filled with product from
the Market at Hague. As the event wound down, it was wonderful to see
the diversity in the room. From the original group of neighbors from 2005
who banded together to attract retail services at 71st/Binford to new faces
who have only recently become involved with BRAG in the past two years. It
was truly inspiring to see the mix of people who came together in
celebration of BRAG’s accomplishments throughout the past decade. While
we are excited about our past achievements, we continue to look to the
future and what new projects BRAG will tackle. If you are interested in
getting involved with BRAG, please contact Board Chair, Kas Vargo
([email protected]).
