Half at the Hamptons steps out for inaugural half-marathon

HAMPTON | It’s easy to
drive along the coast this time
of year and barely see another
soul. But on Sunday, Ocean
Boulevard was clamoring
with more than 1,000 walkers and runners participating
in the inaugural Half at the
Hamptons.
The half marathon sponsored by LOCO Sports, Inc.,
drew runners and walkers
from all around the Seacoast
region to enjoy a scenic 13.1mile run or walk to get the
blood flowing in the midst of
the long winter season.
Among those out for the
mid-winter run was Amesbury, Mass. resident Dennis
Flanagan, an admitted avid
runner and participant in several local races. Flanagan said
jokingly that he came out for
the T-shirt.
“I run all year long anyway,” he said, “so I might as
well get a shirt out of it.”
Flanagan said he was
pleasantly surprised to see so
many fellow runners out during the first ever running of
the race.
“That’s pretty good,” he
observed. “I’m not the only
fool out here.”

Eating for a healthy heart
Early release denied for Flynn
EXETER | Trying to keep that New Year’s Resolution
to eat healthy? To help out, Eventide Home will host a
program entitled “Eating Your Way to a Healthy Heart” on
Thursday, February 21 at 1:30 p.m.
The program, presented by Susan Engle, MOE, RD, LD,
will provide tips on heart healthy eating and successful
weight loss strategies. Eventide Home is located at 81 High
Street in Exeter. For more information, or to RSVP for the

Candidates’ Night in Seabrook
SEABROOK | A Seabrook Candidates’ Night will be held
on Wednesday, February 20 at 7 p.m. in the selectmen’s
meeting room at the town hall. The event will be televised
live on Seabrook Channel 22.
All candidates for the town, Seabrook School District and
Winnacunnet Cooperative School District offices are invited
to attend the event, moderated by Assistant Town Moderator,
Virginia Small with assistance by Owen Latham.
Because of limited seating in the selectmen’s meeting
room, candidates will have seating preference. Citizens who
do not have TV Channel 22 will be able to watch the live
broadcast at the Seabrook Recreation Center.
Candidates will have time for a brief statement answering
why they wish to run for the office or position, qualifications
they might have for the office or position and how Seabrook
will benefit by their election. Candidates are asked to give
their telephone number and e-mail address so they can
be contacted between Candidates’ Night and voting day,
Tuesday, March 11 for answers to questions any citizens

New knitting group starts
HAMPTON | A recently-formed knitting group will
hold regular monthly meetings from 1-3 p.m. on the last
Thursday of the month at the Lane Memorial Library in
Hampton. Instructed by Linda Gebhart, the group will
meet through the winter and spring seasons until June 26.
It offers a chance for participants to learn how to knit or
brush up on a rewarding handcraft. This group is perfect
for those who are looking for some exciting ideas while
making new friends. Basic supplies and instructions will be
available to get started (or bring a project in progress). For

BRENTWOOD | William Flynn, the gunman in
the infamous Pamela Smart
case has been denied early
release.
Flynn, now 33, was 16 in
1990 when he shot Gregory
Smart in the couple’s condominium. Flynn claimed
he committed the murder at
the behest of Pamela Smart,
with whom he had been
carrying on an affair after
meeting her at Winnacunnet High School where she
served as media coordinator.
On Tuesday, Judge Kenneth McHugh said upon
reviewing the factors of the
case he was compelled to
find that 18 years served
was not enough for the murder. In his writings McHugh

BRENTWOOD | Sheila
LaBarre, the Brentwood resident accused of killing a
man and burning his body,
admitted in court on Tuesday that the state has enough
evidence to convict her of
more than one murder.
LaBarre pleaded not
guilty by reason of insanity
to the charge of killing Kenneth Countie, 24, in March
2006. In her plea, LaBarre
acknowledged that the state
not only has enough evidence to convict her of that
crime, but also the murder of
Michael Deloge.
Deloge had moved to
LaBarre’s farm in recent
years, but then vanished and
was never again located by
his family. The state detailed
its case on Tuesday, including evidence that he was
responsible for the death of
both men.
With LaBarre’s plea, she
admits to the murders, but
will argue she was insane
during the time the crimes
were committed.
The burden now falls
upon the defense to prove
that LaBarre was indeed
insane. If the court is in
agreement with LaBarre’s
plea she could be sentenced
to a psychiatric hospital for
life.
The sentence for the conviction of first-degree murder is life with the possibility
of parole in prison.

I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the
voters of Hampton for the
confidence they have shown
for me in the recent special
election for state representative. I am grateful for your
support but more importantly, I am humbled by it.
Many people of both parties worked very hard for
their respective candidate to
get out the vote and they succeeded in doing just that. The
state only expected approximately 600 voters to participate in the special election
in Hampton, but more than
1500 of our citizens turned
out on a very bad weather day to meet their civic
responsibility. Good for you,
Hampton!
A satisfying experience
for me during this campaign
was to make the acquaintance of my opponent, Dick
Goodman. It was not only
his professional background
but his thoughtful and kind
demeanor that told me
Hampton would be well
served by either candidate.
As we grew to know each
other better I came to more
fully appreciate his service
to our community and to
respect him for his knowledge. I told him — and I will
repeat for you — that I will
seek his counsel on school
and other matters because
there is just too much wisdom there to be ignored.
While the election is now
over, my responsibilities
of representation are not.
I truly do look forward to
the challenge and participating in the difficult budget
decisions ahead. While I
am a member of the minority party, I know that I still
have a voice and when I am
procedurally comfortable I
intend on using it. I also
know that real progress cannot be made without real
compromise. You can count
on me to do that often.
New Hampshire has been
good to me and my family
and I intend to return the
favor. My reward? I have
already received that from
my wife and adult children:

Balancing old and new
To the Editor:
The Trustees of Nichols
Memorial Library will be
sponsoring two warrant
articles in Kingston’s town
vote this March. Through the
success of these two warrant
articles we hope to sell the
land purchased for a new
library building on Church
Street in 2000 as revenue,
along with a bond, to fund
the current plan to expand
the existing historic building
on Main Street.
With the gift of land by
Marilyn Bartlett which was
accepted in last year’s vote,
there will be sufficient space
to expand the 110-year-old
building, and provide adequate parking. The expansion plan keeps the library
in its original location in the
historic village district of
Kingston.
The plan features a new
entry, so for the first time
since 1898 any community
member, regardless of their
mobility needs, could enter
the library and enjoy our
services. And services in
today’s libraries are far more
involved than they were 110
years ago. In 2007, we offered
programming to over 4,400
adults and children.
While the original Nichols Memorial Library building has done well to adapt
to a community over seven
times the size it was intended to accommodate, the time
has come to look toward the
future, and anticipate the
needs of new generations.
In 1898 when J. Howard Nichols — in honor of
his parents — presented
the town of Kingston with
the immeasurable gift of its
library, he intended to “provide a building that would

legacy of information, education, entertainment and

Shortly after the original
fieldstone building, with its
Arts and Crafts Style homage to the Medieval, was
completed, new bookshelves
were required. Electric
lights replaced the original
gas fixtures in 1911, but by
1921 the call went out for
an expansion or new wing.
In the intervening 87 years
since the first mention of an
expansion, every option for
maximizing usable space has
been taken.
Effective management
of the library’s collections
is compromised by lack
of space. In order to add
new materials to keep our
offerings up to date, we are
constantly discarding older
materials. While some thinning of dated material is
normal and necessary, materials that could have proved
valuable to a researcher in
the future may have already
been discarded just to
make space. A better balance between old and new
is needed, so that new acquisitions don’t automatically
force out other materials.

and new. The integrity of the
original building is entirely
maintained, while the added
construction offers space,
light, technology and access
never dreamed of in 1898.
Presentations to civic groups
and organizations throughout the community will be

Thank you Senator
Barnes, for your support
of parents. I am referencing specifically the parental
notification law of 2003. This
law would ensure a parent
was notified 48 hours before
his or her minor daughter
had an abortion.
Although it was repealed,
Senator Barnes has introduced a new version, SB302.
The hearing for this bill will
be on Tuesday, February 19
at the State House at 2 p.m.

to come to this hearing. The
public is allowed to speak,

Who says the summer season holds the corner market
on fun, food and fellowship on the Seacoast? North
Hampton's WinterFest I, taking place on Saturday, February 16, promises fun for all
ages in a day-long, indooroutdoor community event.
Organized by the North
Hampton Recreation Department and Commission, WinterFest I is a collaborative
effort involving local organizations and businesses coming together to bring some
wonderful warmth to the
winter season.
“The North Hampton
Recreation and Commission
invites everyone to come
out on Saturday to enjoy the
many and different events
and activities that we have
planned especially for our
residents to enjoy,” says Rec
Director Diane Wheeler.
“Whether its eating at the
Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast
to enjoying a magic show
by Peter Boie; to enjoying
outdoor games at Sagamore,
to riding on a horse drawn
wagon, to the Chili Bowl
cookoff; to ice skating at the
bonfire and drinking cocoa
or even enjoying a night out
with your favorite Valentine
at the Avalanche Bash at the
Ashworth, we guarantee
that there’s something for
everyone!”
Indeed, the day kicks off
on a sweet note with the
Boy Scouts’ Pancake Breakfast from 8-10 a.m. at the old
town hall ($5 adults, $3 kids
12 and under), followed an
hour of activities to enjoy
at the library, including free
arts and crafts for children
from 10-11 a.m.
Back at the town hall, the
Peter Boie Magician Show
brings some wintertime
magic to the morning for
free, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
Don’t go too far, though — a
free Audubon raptor show
follows from 12:30-1:30 p.m.,
also at the old town hall.
Prepare to be captivated by
these winged wonders.
Over at the Sagamore
Golf Driving Range on
North Road there will be
three hours of activities to
enjoy, including an opportunity to purchase and fly a
kite (it’s not just for mid-July
anymore) and fun things
for children of all ages to
do. Adults can pitch some
“Snow Horseshoes” at 1
p.m. then play some “Snow
Volleyball” at 2 p.m., and a
Snowman Building Contest
is planned (note to families:

From 3-5 p.m. it will be
time to warm up at North
Hampton’s own Chili Bowl
chili cook-off. Over the last
several weeks the rec department has been seeking chili
entries from local contestants, who need to bring in
a minimum of two gallons
of their best chili (and be
willing to eat it themselves,
of course). The cook-off
and judging will be held at
the North Hampton UCC;
the first place winner will
receive a cash prize as well
as the official “Great Chili
Bowl,” which they will keep
until next year’s event. Second and third place entries
each receive a cash prize and
a trophy for their awardwinning efforts.
After warming up with
delicious chili, plan on trekking over to Dearborn Park,
where from 5-7 p.m. the
North Hampton Firefighters
Local #3211 will light up the
night with a bonfire and hot
chocolate. This will be followed at 7 p.m. by a “Des-
serts and Drama” 7th grade
musical and art production
at North Hampton School.
Tickets are only $10, and all
are guaranteed to enjoy a
warm and wonderful time
watching “Rocky of the
Rainforest” and listening to
the NHS jazz band. Proceeds
raised at this two-hour event
will help fund the NHS
spring musical.
The day’s fun and excitement conclude with an Avalanche Bash Dance at the
Ashworth by the Sea from
7:30 p.m. to midnight. Dance
to live band music, enjoy hors
d’oeuvres and take chances
to win some fantastic door
prizes (including two tickets
to see the Red Sox, three
months’ membership to Fitness Revolution, and a $100
floral arrangement by Drinkwater Flowers and Design,
and a gift certificate from
Abercrombie and Finch).
By the way, as the day’s
events unfold, don’t forget to
bring in donations of canned
goods for the “Fill the Food
Banks” effort, and old cell
phones to help raise funds
for the NHS seventh grade
trip to New York City. Collection boxes have been placed
throughout the town, including the town office building,
the library, Centennial Hall,
the old town hall, Sagamore
Golf and the United Church
of Christ.

HAMPTON | As part of this year’s observance of the
Lenten season, Hampton United Methodist Church has
established a Lenten Prayer Wall in a room off the sanctuary
of the church.
Worshipers are invited to write a prayer and pin it to the
wall or bring a picture of a loved one to be remembered in
prayer, perhaps someone serving in the military, or someone
who is ill, or someone who has passed away.
The Prayer Wall will remain in place until Good Friday,
March 21, when it will be moved into the sanctuary. Prior to
that time, Thursday evening Lenten services will be held at
7 p.m. on February 14, 21 and 28, and March 6 and 13.
Hampton UMC holds Sunday worship services at 9 a.m.
and 10;30 a.m., with the Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor, and Dr.
David Kerr, interim pastor. Sunday School for children, preschool through high school, is held at 9 a.m. Fellowship and
a coffee hour follow each worship service.
Located at 525 Lafayette Road in Hampton, the church is
handicapped accessible and hearing devices are available.
Nursery care is available during both Sunday morning
worship services. In addition, the church food pantry is

DURHAM | A Durham
native and Navy SEAL who
was killed in combat last
week was laid to rest today
at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Nathan Hardy, 29, was
killed while conducting
combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on Monday, Feb. 4.
Hardy’s parents, Steve
and Donna are both employees of the University of New
Hampshire; Steve as a professor of kinesiology and
Donna as an administrative
assistant in the psychology
department.
Hardy grew up in Durham and was a 1997 graduate of Oyster River High
School.
Family friend and fellow UNH professor, Mike
Merenda said Nathan knew
early on he wanted to be a
SEAL and signed on with
the military shortly after
high school.
Hardy approached the
military with the same zeal
that he expressed as a star
soccer player.
“He was very involved
in sports and the community,” Merenda recalled. “Nate
really loved doing that type
of stuff. He just loved life.”
He enlisted in the US
Navy Nov. 4, 1997, and
graduated from boot camp
at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., in
Jan. 1998. The same month,
Chief Hardy entered Basic
Underwater Demolition/
SEAL (BUD/S) training in
Coronado, CA, Class 221.
Following graduation
from BUD/S in May 1998,
Hardy served his entire
career with East Coast-based
SEAL Teams other than
attending various schools.
His awards and decorations are numerous,
including the Bronze Star
and campaign medals from
Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo.
Shortly
after
the
announcement of Nathan’s
death, UNH President Mark
Huddleston made the following statement:
"Our hearts go out to
Steve and Donna Hardy,
and their son, Ben, at this
incredibly difficult time. We
know it was Nate’s dream
to become a US Navy SEAL
when he graduated from
high school, and he pursued
that dream and excelled at
it. His death has stunned all
who knew him, and all who
know his parents, who both
are so much a part of the
UNH community."
In addition to his parents, Hardy is survived
by his wife, Mindy, sevenmonth-old son, Parker and
brother, Ben. He was predeceased by brother Joshua,
who died while a senior at
Oyster River High School.

HAMPTON | The Friends of the Lane Library will hold a
general meeting for all members on Tuesday, February 19 at
6:30 p.m. at the library Agenda items to be discussed include
the March election warrant article concerning the library
HVAC system. Other initiatives up for discussion include the
funding of a new library water station, the March 4 launching
of the Friends Twilight Book Club, and other business. “We
are hoping for a large turnout of Friends volunteers as we
have a number of important issues to discuss,” says Friends
President Gloria Goudreau. “The Lane Library is a valued
town resource, and the Friends have a number of upcoming
opportunities to demonstrate their support to the library. We
invite current members as well as interested volunteers to
attend our general meeting on February 19.”

mission is to preserve and strengthen Hampton’s library as

tucked under his arm, looking for all the world like a
love-struck fool.
“My gosh, Crawford,” I
said, “I didn’t know you
have a girlfriend. Who is the
lucky lady who’s going to
get the candy on Valentine’s
Day?”
Surprisingly, instead of
being embarrassed, Crawford looked annoyed.
“There is no lucky lady,”
he said. “I’m a political conservative. I’m giving these
chocolates to the person I
really care about and love
the most. I’m giving them to
myself.”
“What!” I countered. “Is
there no one you like as
much as yourself? Not your
Mom, not your dog?”
“Absolutely
not.”
responded Crawford. “As a
matter of fact, we political
conservatives like people
only to the extent that they
are similar to us. If someone
lives in the United States,
looks like us, has the same
religion, speaks the same
language and dresses as we
do, then he is okay. But, if
they differ, we have little
tolerance for them.
“For example,” continued Crawford, “homosexu-

als aren’t like us. Gays are
attracted to people of the
same sex. They don’t like
people of the opposite sex,
as we do. That’s weird. So,
we have little sympathy for
them. And hippies. They
dress funny, and don’t wear
their hair right. So, we don’t
like them, either. Of course,
the worst of all are the people at the United Nations.
We hate the United Nations.
Those people look different,
speak different languages,
practice different religions,
and wear peculiar clothing,
so they are no good at all.”
“Well,” I said, “that
poses a problem. The world
is filled with people who
are different. How do you
political conservatives plan
to get along with them?”
“Look,” snorted Crawford, “we don’t plan to get
along with them at all. We
stay away from them. They
are no good. We stay with
our own kind, and force
people who are different to
live somewhere else. If they
come too close, that makes
us nervous and suspicious.
People who are different are
up to no good. They make
us angry. So, we deal with
them by force. We put them
in jail. Or we invade their
countries.”
By now, Crawford was
in high dudgeon, and could
barely contain himself.
“Fortunately, at crucial
times in our nation’s history,
we have had conservative
heroes step forward to deal
with people who are different,” he said. “Take conservative US Senator Joseph
McCarthy of Wisconsin.
Now, there was a real man.
McCarthy understood that
people who are different
are dangerous. In the 1950s,
McCarthy claimed that
there were 205 card-carrying communists in the State
Department. So, bless him,
he began a series of investigations to root them out, as
well as other commies who
had infiltrated the government. We haven’t had such a
rigorous investigation since
the Spanish Inquisition.”
“Now, hold on just a
minute,” I said. “McCarthy’s
investigations went way
overboard. He persecuted
people simply because they
were different, not threats
to the country. According to
BBC News, 'Many had only
tenuous connections with
communists — through family members or book clubs
where Karl Marx was read,
or unions with left-wing
leaders … Among those
who were brought before the
McCarthy Committee were
famous writers and artists
like Aaron Copland, Dashiell Hammett, and the wife
of singer Paul Robeson …
an accusation by McCarthy
could cost someone his job,
his reputation, and (in one
case of suicide) his life.'”
Crawford looked scornful.
“Hey, if you’re going to
make an omelet, you’ve got
to break a few eggs,” he
said. “We political conservatives believe that you can’t
be too careful. You’ve got to
be suspicious of everyone.
Thank God that today we’ve
got the Bush Administration
looking out for us.”
“Crawford, your conservative paranoia can do more
to destroy democracy than
to protect it,” I said. “Listen to what Dahlia Lithwick
writes in ‘Slate’ magazine:
‘At the start of this war, Congress thought it was authorizing the use of force in
Afghanistan. But now we’ve
learned that in so doing
it also gave the president
limitless powers to break
the law. Congress thought
it was passing the Patriot
Act. But it was actually giving the government broad
and seemingly open-ended
new surveillance authority.
We (incorrectly) believed
the executive branch to be
bound by the rule of law —
by the Constitution and the
Geneva Conventions and
the ancient writ of habeas
corpus.’”
Crawford
looked
thoughtful for a moment.
“Here,” he said, “you
take this box of chocolates.”
“What!” I answered.
“Does this mean that you’ve
taken what I said to heart?”
“No, it means I don’t
know who made these chocolates. It might be someone
weird and different; someone I can’t trust. These chocolates might explode when I
open the box. Here, Patton
— you open it.”

House
(A) STATE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO RECYCLE
BETTER | HB877 sets up a committee to coordinate the
state government recycling program. Supporters said that
current recycling efforts are not effective across the various
departments in state government. When implemented
properly, this will save the state money. Opponents said
that the governor could do this without a committee,
at less cost and with less of a bureaucracy. The House
PASSED the bill, 199-124. A YES vote FAVORED a state
government recycling committee.
(B) HOME CONTRACTOR BILL'S LANGUAGE FAILS
| HB174 would require that building and remodeling
contractors register or face a penalty of one year in jail, a
$4000 fine and a ban on all future work. Supporters said
that this bill would enable the state Attorney General
to go after unscrupulous contractors, who are able to
change their corporate identity to escape prosecution,
while staying in business and ripping off unsuspecting
consumers.
Opponents said that the bill’s penalty is too harsh,
particularly since the language was confusing, and could
result in a local handyman working for a neighbor being
thrown in jail. They also said an exemption for big box
retail contractors like Home Depot or Sears was unfair. The
House defeated the language in the bill. 107-216, but then
tabled the bill, to perhaps come back another day. A YES
vote OPPOSED this bill regulating small contractors.
(C) TARGETED AID AMENDMENT FAILS | CACR6
would allow the state to target educational aid to districts
that the legislature thinks need it, but is silent on the
state’s obligation to provide an adequate education to
all. Supporters maintain that this is the targeted aid
amendment that everyone is talking about. Opponents
said that the state can already target aid to some degree,
or want an amendment that does guarantee educational
adequacy. The House KILLED the amendment 192-98. A
YES vote OPPOSED this targeted aid amendment.
(D) DON'T TAKE AWAY THE COURT'S POWERS
| CACR2 is a constitutional amendment that would
take away the Supreme Court’s power to declare laws
unconstitutional, allowing it only to make that judgment
on lower court decisions. Only the legislature itself
would decide which of its laws violates the constitution.
Supporters said court has usurped its authority, and it
was never supposed to do anything else but interpret
lower court decisions. Opponents said this violates the
fundamental balance of power, and removes the ability
for the courts to protect the rights of minorities against
majority rule. The House KILLED the amendment 228-104.
A YES vote OPPOSED taking away the Supreme Court’s
power to rule on a law’s constitutionality.

Visitors stopping by Lincoln
Akerman School in recent
weeks may have noticed a
work of art hanging near the
stairway, just past the inner
doors of the front foyer.
This virtual masterpiece,
a stunning king-sized quilt
rendered in shades of blue
and white in an “Indian
Hatchet” block pattern, is the
result of months of painstaking piecework, thousands of
stitches and careful attention
to detail.
The quilt is the work of
Hampton Falls resident and
machine quilter extraordinaire Janet-Lee Santeusanio,
who with her business partner Mary Schilke founded
the Machine Quilters Exposition, LLC.
Also known as MQX,
the exposition is an annual
machine quilting show and
conference held annually in
Manchester.
It is at this year’s show,
scheduled for the week of
April 14-19, that the quilt
will be on display along with
countless other machine
quilted items stitched by
MQX participants.
But this quilt will serve
an even nobler purpose
once the MQX has come
and gone: It is being raffled
off as a fundraiser for the
annual LAS eighth grade
trip to New York City in May
(Janet-Lee’s daughter Ariana
is a member of the LAS Class
of 2008).
Tickets are currently
available at $1 each, or six for
$5, and may be purchased at
Lincoln Akerman School, the
Hampton Falls Free Library,
and the Hampton Falls Village Market. The drawing
will take place on Tuesday,
April 22.
Valued at $2500, the quilt
is crafted of 100 percent cotton fabrics in a smorgasbord
of luscious prints. According
to Janet-Lee (who donated it
for the LAS fundraiser) her
magnificent quilt actually
comes from rather humble
beginnings.
“The quilt is composed of
scraps from two other blue
and white quilts,” she says.
“One was a wedding gift.
I liked it so much I made
one for myself.” There was
enough fabric left over from
these two projects to make
the third quilt, which is in
predominantly blue florals,
stars and prints.
“I guess I over-bought the
blue [fabric],” she laughs.
Janet-Lee estimates it
took “probably six to eight
months to piece” the quilt
top together. With quality
wool batting sandwiched in
between the top and the
back, she used her speciallydesigned long-arm quilting
machine to stitch the layers
together.
“The quilting design
is called ‘feathers,” she
explains. “It’s a continuous
feather design.” The stitches
curve, scroll and swirl delicately over the triangles and
rectangles of the 100”x114”
quilt top.
This final step of the process took a couple of days
(and even an all-nighter) for
Janet-Lee to complete, just
in time for its entry in a
quilt show. The quilt’s journey will continue with this
spring’s MQX.
“It will be at the show,
out front by the entry of
the main exhibit hall,” says
Janet-Lee. “We’ll be selling
[raffle] tickets at the show.”
The Machine Quilters
Expo, in and of itself, is a
premier event for dedicated
stitchers and casual observers alike, and like the quilt
to be raffled it, too, is of
humble beginnings.
“It started in my living room in 2000, with 40
women,” says Janet-Lee, and
it has grown to be one of the
most inspiring events in the

even a “Kids Can Quilt” category. “We give away savings bonds, an mp3 player

David “Dave” Follansbee will be
held on Saturday, February 16 at 6

A resident of Epping and a former Winnacunnet High School
student, Dave, 48 is currently recovering from numerous surgeries to
treat an infection to the brain caused
by an abscessed tooth. Due to specific policy regarding physicians, his

cover his treatment.
Both Dave and his wife, Cathy,
are currently out of work — he
because of his medical problems (he
also has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and has lost a portion
of his sight in both eyes) and she
because her husband needs roundthe-clock supervision.
To help the Follansbees meet their
medical and household expenses,
the benefit Valentine’s Dance was
organized in Dave’s name. The public is invited to come and have a
great time while supporting a worthy cause.

The concert features “Pictures at an Exhibition,” the
ever-popular work of musical imagery, with the music
of Modest Mussorgsky and
Maurice Ravel, and the original illustrations by schoolchildren from around the state.
Narration will be provided by
Laura Knoy of New Hampshire Public Radio.
The artistic display is part
of the orchestra’s collaborative
music and drawing project,
“Drawn to the Music.” Students in grades K-7 created the
artwork, and approximately
100 of these images will be
displayed as an integral part
of the Philharmonic’s concert
performance.
Tickets for this “Drawn to
the Music” family concert are
$8 for children and $13 for

Response Seacoast (ARS) Spring
Gayla, taking place on Saturday,
March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton
Harborside Hotel in Portsmouth. This
event marks the 20th anniversary of
ARS.
This year’s theme is “Diamonds
Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” in anticipation of Carol Channing’s special performance to benefit ARS on Thursday,
April 3 at the Music Hall. Attendees
are encouraged to come “Bedecked
and Bedazzled” in their finest array.
Included in the $75 ticket price is
a delicious dinner, an exciting silent
auction featuring many first-time
items, and dancing to the music of
DJ Jodi Duston. Proceeds from this
memorable evening will benefit AIDS
Response Seacoast — always a great
cause.

a trip to Italy and France without even leaving the Seacoast
with “European Adventures:
Painting Trips with Doris Rice,”
a special exhibit set to open
at the Bella Rose Restaurant,
located on Route 1 in North
Hampton.
For the last six years, Rice
— a well known Seacoast artist and teacher — has been
guiding a group of artists to
Europe to paint on location. To
date they have visited France’s
Provence and Brittany and Italy’s Tuscany, capturing their
surroundings on canvas.
The exhibit will display
works from their earliest trip to
the latest. In addition to Rice,
participating artists include
Jamie Baron, Nancy Beveridge,
Annick Bouvron-Gromek, Barbara Cacarillo, Bill Childs, Barbara Cowan, Grace Daly, Helen
Hazen, Brianna Harmer, Ethel
Hills, Nancy and Paul Hubbe,
Joan Labrie, Gwen Morgan,
Nina Shore and Marcia Van
Dyke.
The exhibit, which opens
with a reception from 4-6 p.m.
on Saturday, February 23,
offers the public a chance to see
what they saw, through each
individual’s eyes, medium and
interpretation. The public is

review basic watercolor techniques
and applications by attending classes
instructed by artist and teacher, Ruthie
Kenick at the Portsmouth Art Studio.
Participants in these classes will use
still life, photographs, masterpieces
and plenty of imagination while
discovering how their personality is
expressed through each brush stroke.
Kenick is a graduate of the School of
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and
holds a certificate in Illustration and a
Masters in Education. Her work can
be seen at the New Hampshire Art
Association and in private collections
throughout the country.
These classes respect the freedom
to play, and each participant is promised a finished piece to take home
and/or the opportunity to sell a piece
though a local venue.
A limited number of students is
currently being accepted. The fee for

now on sale for the all-new, first
national tour of “Ring of Fire: The
Music of Johnny Cash,” coming
directly from Broadway to the
Music Hall for two performances
this spring.
The music of the legendary Man
in Black will ignite the Music Hall
stage in its Portsmouth premiere on
Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. and
Friday, April 11 at 8 p.m.
Stories of passion, redemption,
humor, and salvation set the stage
ablaze in this musical production
honoring the world’s most famous
rebel, Johnny Cash. One of the best
“jukebox musicals” of all time,
“Ring of Fire” includes such hits
as “I Walk the Line,” “Jackson,”
“Folsom Prison Blues,” and the title
track “Ring of Fire.”
Through words and music, for
nearly half a century, Cash expertly
captured the moods, the thoughts,
and the struggle of the American
working people. His success was
incomparable: 11 Grammy Awards
(including 1999 Lifetime Achievement Grammy), inductions into
the Country Music Hall of Fame
and the Rock Music Hall of Fame,
and a Kennedy Center Honor. He
placed 48 singles on the Billboard
Hot 100 Pop charts and more than
130 hits on the Billboard Country
singles chart — more than anyone
in history.

death, Johnny Cash remains one of
the most popular entertainers of all

Garden club discovers
‘New England Sampler’
PORTSMOUTH | Portsmouth
Garden Club members will gather
for a meeting and refreshments on
Wednesday, February 20 at 12 noon at
the Urban Forestry Center, located on
Elwyn Road in Portsmouth.
Beginning at 1:30 p.m., Beth Hume,
chairman of the New Castle Conservation Commission, will present the
program “A New England Sampler.”
This program provides a sampling
of the many historic gardens open to
the public in Northern New England.
From Colonial to Victorian to Colonial
Revival to Golden Age, these gardens
trace the evolution of garden design
in a harsh climate. For more information about the Portsmouth Garden

all! Marston Elementary School will
be holding its seventh annual Variety
Show on Thursday, February 21 at
6:30 p.m. at the Winnacunnet Community Auditorium.
This year’s show will feature exciting dance acts, awesome gymnastics,
entertaining musical performances
and hilarious comedy skits.
Marston School’s cast of more than
90 performers have been working
with staff members and practicing for
over a month, and they are more than
ready to showcase their talents at this
spectacular event.
All proceeds from the show will
go directly to the Marston Events
Committee and Wellness Program
initiatives.
Tickets for the event are $4 each
and are available at Marston School.
Tickets are limited and will not be

HAMPTON | If it’s February, then
it is time for the Hampton Area Lions
Club Annual Charity Auction. This
year’s fun and exciting event will
be held on Saturday, February 16 at
the Galley Hatch Conference Center,
located on Lafayette Road in Hampton. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
As with all of the Lions fundraisers, 100 percent of the profits from this
evening will be used for charitable
purposes. Once again, the event will
feature a live and silent auction, as
well as several specialty tables. As in
years past, the merchants of North
Hampton, Hampton, and Hampton
Falls, as well as other businesses within the state of New Hampshire and
elsewhere have been very generous
with donations to the auction.
It is impossible to list all of the
items that will be up for bid at the
auction, but sporting enthusiasts are
likely to be interested in bidding on
Red Sox and/or Celtics tickets, as well
as tickets for other area professional
sports teams, passes for golf and ski
areas, and sports memorabilia.
There are numerous other auction
options for dining or entertainment,
places to get away, or adventure items
(a biplane thrill ride, for instance). As
the winter drags on, who couldn’t use
a load of dried and split firewood or
service, a good wash or detailing for
their car. Add to all this an assortment
of artwork, items for the home, jewelry
— there truly is something for everyone. Admission to the auction is only
$9 per person. This not only entitles
each guest to a bidding number, but
also a hot hors d’oeuvres buffet, excellently prepared by Galley Hatch Catering. A cash bar will be available. Plan
on coming by when the doors open
for viewing of auction items, entering
silent auction item bids, and filling a
plate with some very tasty food. Harvey Webber of Webber Antiques will
be conducting the auction and, like
last year, promises to keep the action
moving along in rapid fashion.
The Galley Hatch Conference Center is located at 815 Lafayette Road,
behind the Best Western Inn at Hampton. It is easy to reach and has plenty
of convenient parking. For a great
winter evening of fun, excellent food,
and a chance to snap up some good
bargains, bring a friend and come join
the community at the annual Hampton Lions Club auction.

HAMPTON | The Village Preschool, located at 200 High
Street in Hampton, is currently accepting registrations for
their 2008-09 school year.
The school offers a five-day morning preschool (threeand two-day options); five-day extended day programs for
children age 3-5; and an after-Kindergarten program from

LAS taking new student registrations
HAMPTON FALLS | Registration is currently underway
at Lincoln Akerman School (LAS) for the fall 2008 school
year. LAS is the public school in Hampton Falls serving
children from Kindergarten through grade 8.
Parents are encouraged to pick up registration materials at
the school office as soon as possible for any child who will
be entering the school for the first time in September 2008,
regardless of grade. Students entering Kindergarten must be
five years of age prior to October 1, 2008. Screenings will be
conducted in April.
Timely and accurate information about newly-enrolling
students is very important for planning staff and classroom

atmosphere, will make participants’ experiences fulfilling and enriching.
Body Vive: This is a new
group-exercise-to-music
program which provides a
full-body workout in which
participants set their own
pace. Classes start with a
simple warm-up and continue with alternate heart fitness
and function strength blocks,
culminating with a final
block of core and restorative
exercises. This low-impact,
55-minute class integrates
aerobic exercise, resistance
training and stretching and
mobility work. All instructors
are certified and associated
with Fitness Revolution in
North Hampton. Class meets
from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 12, 19, 26 and
April 2, 9 and 16. The cost for
Body Vive is $55.
Intro to Personal Hypnosis: Over the last decade,
hypnosis (suggestive therapy) has gained popularity
and acceptance as a natural
path to wellness and happiness. It has been useful
for weight management,
smoking cessation, performance enhancement, pain
control, anxiety reduction
and habit modification. In
this six-hour course, participants will learn how to
change unproductive habits
of mind through “speaking”
directly to the subconscious
mind. Under the guidance
of instructors Richard and
Linda Paquin, class members
will learn about hypnotism,
test personal suggestibility,
establish personal goals and
an action plan for personal
change, and learn a threestep self-hypnosis technique.
Class meets Mondays, March
10, 17 and 24 from 6:30-8:30
p.m. Cost is $60.
Intro to Aikido: The noncompetitive Japanese martial
art of Aikido incorporates
grappling, strikes, pins and
throws as a means of protecting oneself without relying
on physical strength alone.
Participants in this course
will learn some basic throwing and pinning techniques,
as well as how to fall and roll
safely. Instructed by Aaron
Cass, this class takes place
from 7-8:30 p.m. on Mondays, March 10, 17, 24 and
31, and April 7 and 14. The
cost for the course is $45.
Adult/Child/Infant CPR:
This single night course, held
from 6-9 p.m. on a date to
be determined by the Community Ed office, will train
individuals age 17 year or
older to act in emergency
situations and to recognize
and respond to life-threatening respiratory or cardiac
emergencies in adults. Participants will learn through use
of lecture, a student manual
and videos, and skill practice on mannequins. Upon
successful completion, the
participant will receive an
American Heart Association
card, valid for one year. The
cost for this course is $35.

WHS senior class presidents sought
Sacred Heart School students in Hampton were challenged
to celebrate their 100th day of school on Thursday, February
7, by bringing in 100 food items per class to stock the
St. Vincent de Paul pantry. The students exceeded all
expectations. Instead of bringing in 1,800 items, they donated
a total of 2,950 items to stock the food pantry. First grade
teacher Lisa Bean and her students are shown in the attached
picture with the graph of donations.

Scholarships available to SAU16 seniors
STRATHAM | For the
third year, the Stratham Historical Society is offering the
Winfield L. Foote Award for
Academic Excellence to high
school seniors based on academic excellence in history/
social sciences and/or agriculture.
Two $1,000 scholarships
will be available to high
school seniors who are planning to attend an accredited
college or university in the
fall. SAU16 students and
Stratham residents attending
other local high schools are
eligible to apply.
SAU16 students who are
enrolled in the Animal and
Plant Science course at the
Seacoast School of Technology in Exeter are also qualified.
The criteria for these
awards shall be in keeping
with the stated mission of
the Society: “To promote the
study of the prehistoric and
the historic past of Stratham
and of the communities and
cultures related to that history.”
The Winfield L. Foote
Endowment Fund enables
all awards presented by
Stratham Historical Society.
This fund, created and managed by the society, was made
possible by the Winfield L.
Foote bequest of 2004.
These awards are to be
given during an awards night
at the recipient’s high school.

WWI history comes alive at Hampton Academy

HAMPTON | Eighth
graders at Hampton Academy recently had the opportunity to watch history come
alive when Paul Levasseur, a
teacher in “New Hampshire’s
History Alive!” program
came to the school to share
his knowledge of life experiences of the Allied soldiers
during World War I.
During a month-long
unit on the Great War, students learned about the multiple causes of World War I,
including the four underlying causes and the spark that
sent Europe into war — the
assassination of Austria-Hungarian Archduke Frances Ferdinand. Students also studied
WWI propaganda and campaigns, U.S. foreign policy
during this turbulent time,
and viewed the movie classic
“All Quiet on the Western
Front.”
To better understand and
relate to the human aspect
of war, students completed
letters from the trenches and
little books of knowledge.
“I thought all the gear that
Mr. Levasseur put on me was
heavy even without all the
ammo, grenades, sleeping
equipment and other things
the soldiers had with them
to survive,” reported Emerson, who was selected to
try on an authentic soldier’s
uniform and gear. “I didn’t
even have all the gear that
a WWI soldier would have
had and it was already really
heavy. I can’t imagine standing for a long period of time
in all that. Even one hour in it
was pretty tiring. I appreciate
what they went through even
more. I always thought about
their fighting, but didn’t even
think about the weight of the
gear and how much difficulty even that caused. Their
range of mobility was very
limited.”
Steve Borg, who also
donned the uniform, added,
“The uniform was itchy,
heavy, and wasn’t comfortable at all. I don’t know how
the soldiers lived with wearing those uniforms, on top
of all the other hardships. I
don’t know that I could have
done it.”
The timing of the unit coincidentally corresponded with
the death of Henry Landis,
one of two remaining American WWI Veterans. Landis
died on Monday, February 4,
at the age of 108. Today, the
only known surviving American WWI veteran is Frank
Buckles, 107, who lives in
Charles Town, West Virginia.
Buckles was sent to France
in 1917 at the age of 16, where
he was employed as a driver.
After the Final Armistice was
signed in 1918, he escorted
prisoners back to Germany. In
the Second World War, Buckles worked as a civilian for an
American shipping line. He
was captured by the Japanese
and spent three years in a
Japanese prison camp.
More than 20 million
people died in WWI, and
it is estimated that around
117,465 of those deaths were
Americans, who officially
entered the war on April 6,
1917 and fought until the
Final Armistice was signed
on November 11, 1918.

es in the war. Thousands of
families on the home front
feared for the safety of their
loved ones serving overseas
and made sacrifices to contribute to the war effort.
Yet we study this war
today not to count these numbers, but to know the stories
of the people who make up
these numbers — the fathers,
brothers, mothers, daughters, brothers and sisters
whose lives were sacrificed
for freedom and democracy.
We study the war to learn
from the dreamers and the
heroes who have humbled
future generations with their
bravery and selflessness. It
is by these stories that we
understand what our country
stands for and see that history is indeed alive and honored today by the people of
the United States of America.

Mr. Levasseur, a retired
eighth grade social studies
teacher, is no stranger to the
eighth graders at Hampton
Academy. In the fall he served
as one of the tour guides on
the annual class trip to the
Lowell Mills to supplement
the curriculum unit on the
Industrial Revolution.
Levasseur’s enthusiasm
and passion for history connected with students at the
Lowell Mills last October and
shined on the frigid morning
of February 8 as he unloaded
trunks full of authentic WWI
artifacts at Hampton Academy.
Students watched and listened intently as Levasseur
described how soldiers lived
in the trenches of the battlefield of France during WWI.
He displayed everything from
dog tags to canned goods to
gas masks. Eighth graders
Steve Borg, Sebastian Dawson, Jack Duran, and Dylan
Emerson even got a firsthand experience of one of
the hardships soldiers faced
when they were dressed in a
soldier’s uniform and fitted
with trench gear.

‘Shoot for a Cure’
supports cancer fight
HAMPTON | Elevenyear-old Casey Glynn is once
again getting ready to hit the
ice during winter vacation
week for his third annual
“Shoot for a Cure” fundraiser to fight cancer.
Casey, a player on the
Newburyport
Clippers
hockey team, has committed
to shooting 2000 pucks on
his backyard ice rink to raise
funds for both the American
Cancer Society and Exeter
Hospital’s “Beyond the Rainbow” program, a fund to
benefit breast cancer patients
at the hospital’s Breast Care
Unit.
The community is invited
to pledge “a half-penny a
shot” (or more) to help Casey
meet his goal and raise funds
for this important cause.
His reasons for doing this
annual fundraiser is personal and a true labor of love in

As James W. Tucker stated
in Hampton Union column
“Our Town” on February 14,
1952, “ .... there probably
is not another recreational
community in the entire
United States where band
concerts have been a regular
feature on every day of
the summer season, for 50
continuous years.”
During the summer of
1902, the Haverhill City
Band, conducted by Charles
Higgins, and managed by
Joe Goodrich, a Haverhill
barber, played during almost
the entire season.

summer that a conductor
raised his baton and started
the Hampton Beach Band
Concerts. The north half of
the Casino was built in 1899.
At the same time, a highposted “kiosk” was erected
across the street on the
ocean side of the boulevard
as a bandstand.
The Hampton Beach
bandstand was a familiar
landmark to the vacationing
tourists since 1899, when
band concerts were given
at the kiosk intermittently
during 1899, 1900 and 1901,
but not on a regular basis.

1888-1988”, “... For the
opening of the Ocean House
in 1901, Henri G. Blaisdell
and his 20-piece band
played for a week (at the
new bandstand), returning
in August for 10 days and
playing again on Labor

the “Hal” McDonnell Band
at the Beach Bandstand. Mr.
Elliot recently celebrated his
one hundredth birthday.
The old bandstand was
razed in 1962 to make room
for the Sea Shell complex,
and an era of band music
came to a close and another
era opened with the
dedication of the new Sea
Shell complex.

Hampton Beach Orchestra,
who produced a 78 rpm
record in the 1940’s/50’s
called “Take your finger out

Runner collapses during race

HAMPTON | Longtime long-distance runner Bill Paradis was pronounced dead following a heart attack on
Sunday while participating in the Half at the Hamptons, a
half-marathon road race event.
According to fellow runners, Paradis collapsed around
mile 6 of the 13.1-mile course and was taken to Exeter Hospital. First responders were unable to revive him.
Paradis, 55, was a member of the Rochester Runners
Club and was known for his generosity, encouragement
and sense of humor.

held in the library’s Wheaton Lane Room. The room is
currently serving a showcase
for a student art exhibit from
Hampton Academy, and provided a colorful and unique
backdrop.
The perennially popular
tea was hosted by the Friends
of the Lane Memorial Library,
with assistance provided by
a helpful group of students
from Hampton Academy and
Winnacunnet High School.
“We are thrilled once
again to be able to do this for
the kids of the community,”
said Friends President, Gloria
Goudreau. “It’s awesome to
see them all dressed up and
excited to come.”
Accompanied by the special adults in their lives, a
total of 40 children ages 4-8
attended that day, prompting

to observe, “Everyone looks
so pretty — there’s lots of
pink.”
“The turnout is always
great — it fills up quickly,”
said Valentine Sweetheart Tea
Chairman, Arlenea Batchelder. “It’s nice for families
because it’s free. There’s not
much that’s ‘free.’”
As the party started, the
guests were invited to listen
to Children’s Librarian Paulina Shadowens read a trio
of books, including “Elmo
Loves You,” “Clifford’s First
Valentine” and “Valentine’s
Day at the Zoo,” a brand
new pop-up book and one
of the latest additions to the
library’s collection.
The desserts — cupcakes,
brownies, cookies and more
— were a natural hit, and
everyone sipped their choice
of beverage from the china
cups.
It wasn’t hard to guess
what Maggie was sipping
— she came wearing a shirt
that read “This Girl Loves
Hot Chocolate.” Two tables
over, Ben and Chris enjoyed
hot chocolate and apple juice,
and both agreed that the
cookies were their favorites.
After the stories were
read and the delectable treats
enjoyed it was time for the
craft. Friends members supplied the individual Valentine-sized “mailboxes” and
all the embellishments used
to decorate them.
“I liked doing the mailbox,” said Erin, her cheek
adorned with a white unicorn with a colorful rainbow
mane.
Part of the fun was a
chance to win a gift “movie
popcorn bucket” with two
DVDs and movie treats. Eightyear-old Hannah Doherty
was the lucky recipient at the
morning seating. She told her
mother, “I thought today was
my lucky day!”
Whether they won a prize
or not, there’s a very good
chance that most everyone
at the tea felt the same way
as Hannah, thanks to the
Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.
“This is just one of the
events that the Friends and
the library sponsors,” said
Goudreau, who listed Ron
Jillians, Hollywood Video,
Hannaford’s, Me and Ollies
and others among those who
helped make the Valentine’s
Sweetheart Tea a success.
“Our library is such a vital
part of the community and
we need to continue to support it so we can continue to

The Hampton and Exeter Area Chambers of Commerce
celebrated with the law firm of Bostock, Rogers & Donais at
a ribbon cutting ceremony held recently in their new office,
located at 92 Portsmouth Avenue in Exeter. Attorney Pamela
Saia-Rogers cut the ribbon, surrounded by BRD partners
and staff, Chamber ambassadors, town officials, and guests,
including former Congressman Jeb Bradley. Bostock, Rogers
& Donais is a general practice law firm with concentrations in
civil litigation, business/ corporate law, municipal law, criminal
defense, and family law. They currently have offices in Exeter,

out for the day. The business will be offering other
pet services such as training

the building will eventually
evolve into a retail space
were happy dog owners can
purchase a variety of items
for their favorite pet.
Banks said to look for
an official grand opening
of the business coming in
the spring. After roughly a
month of business, she said
the response to this new
venture have been quite
positive.
“It’s been really, really
good,” she said. “We’ve
had dogs for everyday.
Everybody has been really
positive about what we’re
doing.”

on Thursday, February 21

Church hosts Sweetheart Buffet
BRENTWOOD | Celebrate love and fellowship at the
11th annual Sweetheart Buffet, taking place on Saturday,
February 16 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Pilgrim Church, located on
Route 111A in Brentwood.
This delightful Valentine event will offer candlelight, soft
dinner music and an outstanding menu, including fresh
carved ham, turkey and roast beef, a salad bar, and more,
including a variety of homemade desserts.
In addition, free babysitting for children ages 3-10 will be
offered. The children will be served dinner, watch a movie,
and enjoy other activities on the lower floor of the church
while the grownups are upstairs enjoying the meal.
All of this makes the Sweetheart Buffet a great midwinter
event to attend. Tickets will only be sold at the door and are
$10 per person. To have tickets held at the door, or to make

to be that way. Thanks to
new business Play All Day
Doggy Daycare, Fido now
has the opportunity to get
out of the house and get out
that excess energy rather
than take it out on you after
a long day of work.
The business is the brainchild of Amanda Banks and
Craig Field, a local couple
who were looking for something different than the dull
old day job.
“It’s always been kind of
a passion,” explains Banks.
“With our dogs we’ve been
to about a half dozen daycares over the years. We’re
in love with our dogs. We
wanted to create something
that included all of the good
and eliminate the stuff that
was a pain.”
Banks went to school for
Pre-Veterinary Science and
has served as a vet tech. That
education has evolved into
the couple offering a place
for local pups to come out
and play. The business has
5,000 square feet of indoor
space and a huge fenced
in backyard approximately
twice that size. That means
plenty of room for Fido and
his new-found friends to
run and play.
