Loving possessions rather than loving my neighbor
The ten commandments were summarized into two prohibitions - do not worship false idols
and do not covet what belongs to another. It's the flip side of the two great commandments love God and love your neighbor. Jesus warned the man who wanted half of his brother's
inheritance to "beware of all covetousness." To covet is to wish to get wrongfully what another
possesses or to begrudge what God has given to another. Jesus restates the commandment
"do not covet", but he also states that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of his
or her possessions.
Meditation: Have you ever tried to settle a money dispute or an inheritance issue?
Inheritance disputes are rarely ever easy to resolve, especially when the relatives or close
associates of the deceased benefactor cannot agree on who should get what and who should
get the most. Why did Jesus refuse to settle an inheritance dispute between two brothers? He
saw that the heart of the issue was not justice or fairness but rather greed and possessiveness.

PADRE’S PONDERINGS
ARCHDIOCESAN SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING - There will be a Safe
Environment Training offered on August 9 at 7 pm at the St. Francis Center. Please
remember that all employees and volunteers are required to be certified through
the Archdiocesan Safe Environment training program. If you have never received
training, or if your certificate expired more than a year ago, this session is for you!
Please contact Lisa Hunke for details!
YOU PROBABLY WON’T NOTICE – There is a chance that I will be away for a short
time at the beginning of this week. A former student is entering the convent in Alton,
IL, on Tuesday and I hope to be there. If all goes according to plan I’ll leave
Monday after Mass and be back Wednesday. You probably won’t even notice that
I’m gone but I was always told that I had to tell someone when I was leaving home
so…
(If you see me Monday afternoon or Tuesday, kindly disregard the above.)
A/C AT ST. MARY’S – FYI – The unit on the north east side of the Church blew a
compressor last Friday after close to 25 years of faithful service. It is not an
emergency, as the Church was plenty cool last weekend, but did want you to know
what is going on.
HIGH SCHOOL WINDOWS – A quick update on the project. We (actually Mike
Doyle deserves all the credit) recently found three companies who were willing to
bid on the project of replacing the windows in the high school. This was great news
because several contractors who deal specifically with commercial windows looked
once and took a pass. When the bids are received the School Board and the
Development Board will help to determine our next step. On the positive side, one of
the contractors commented, “Whatever you do, replacing the current windows will
increase your efficiency by about 99%.” A little hyperbole but point taken!
RELIGIOUS VOCATIONS FAMILY PICNIC – The annual parish event formerly known
as the Knights of Columbus Bar-B-Que may have a new name but it is still the same
great parish event! Please mark your calendars for Sunday, August 7, and make
plans to join us at Anderson Field in Neligh Park for the 10 AM Mass and then hang
around for a delicious meal. As in the past, because of this event there will not be an
11:30 AM Mass and our “rain location” will be the GA Cafeteria.
MASS AT ST. MICHAEL’S CHAPEL – Thank you to everyone who was able to join us
for Mass at St. Michael’s. It was wonderful to have so many people in spite of the
heat! We will plan on continuing our Masses at St. Michael’s on the last Monday of
the month. See you in August!
ADULT ED – I will be offering an Adult Ed Session on Wednesday, August 10th at 7
PM. I know that this is the week of the Fair, but it is the only Wednesday I have
before school starts so… If you have anything special that you would like to discuss
please let me know. More details will follow.
WE ARE STILL RECRUITING! DO YOU KNOW ANYBODY WHO MIGHT WANT TO
JOIN THE CHURCH? HAVE YOU ASKED? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults –
(RCIA) - is a program of formation and education that offers an opportunity for
individuals who are not Catholic, but might be interested in the possibility of entering
into full communion with the Church, a chance to learn more about what it means to
be a Roman Catholic. Classes would start in late August or early September and
continue through the Easter season. A “formal” schedule would be established when/
if we have any interested candidates, but the norm is to meet once a week as we
explore the rich teaching and history of the Church. If you are interested, know
someone that might be, or are just curious about the process please feel free to give
me a call at (402) 372-2188
THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY – This
year August 15 falls on a Monday so the obligation to attend Mass has been
abrogated. Because it is the Patronal Feast of our parish in West Point, we will be
offering Mass on August 15 at 7 AM, Noon and 7 PM. All Masses that day will be
celebrated at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in West Point.

Saint John Vianney - August 4
John Vianney is known as the Cure (parish priest) of Ars. He was
born May 8, 1786 near Lyons, France. As a boy he wanted to be a
priest, but he could not begin his studies until age twenty. He had
difficulty with his studies because he had little previous schooling
and they were interrupted when he was drafted into Napoleonic
army. He got lost when his unit was moving out and was persuaded
by kindly townspeople to desert. Napoleon granted amnesty to
deserters in 1810 and John came home. He was ordained in 1815,
after his superiors decided that his virtue would compensate for his
inadequate learning. For a time he was the assistant priest for his teacher, M. Balley. He
was sent to be pastor at the village of Ars when Balley died in 1817. Few people were
attending the little run-down church of Ars. The new pastor’s goodness and down-to-earth
sermons soon attracted many people back to church. He became known for his wise counsel in the confessional; sometimes he could read souls, telling people their secret sins. Soon
people from throughout France were flocking to Ars and the good Cure was hearing confessions for much of the day. He slept little and ate little, frequently subsisting on cold
boiled potatoes. Many sick people were healed by his prayers, especially children. John
Vianney died on August 4, 1859 in Ars; he had been pastor there for over forty years.
He was canonized in 1925. He is the patron of parish priests and is being especially honored during the Year for Priests (June 19, 2009-June 19, 2010) proclaimed by Benedict
XVI.

The Transfiguration of the Lord
August 6
In the gospels,
Jesus takes Peter,
James, son of
Zebedee and his
brother John the
Apostle with him
and goes up to a
mountain, which is
not named. Once
on the mountain,
Matthew 17:2
states that Jesus "was transfigured before
them; his face shining as the sun, and his
garments became white as the light." At
that point the prophets Elijah and Moses
appear and Jesus begins to talk to them.
Luke states that they spoke of Jesus' exodus which he was about to accomplish in
Jerusalem.(Lk 9:31) Luke is also specific in
describing Jesus in a state of glory, with
Luke 9:32 referring to "they saw His glory".
