delights.
Finally, surrender to all the shades of grey revealed by the unsettling
silhouettes and curves of its mythical monuments.

Luxeuil-les-Bains sees life through
pink-tinted glasses
Pink sandstone
From pale gold to violet, the mineral heritage
of the North of Franche-Comté has been
colouring the landscape for 200 million years.
As a natural rock, pink sandstone on the
facades, monuments and roads today provides
us with its most beautiful escapes: high tech,
sporty, romantic or cultural, from Belfort to
Luxeuil-les-Bains and the Plateau des Mille
Etangs.
2
Pink like the sandstone of its facades and monuments of the spa town that you
discover with the family while having fun on this heritage route 2.0: armed with a
tablet or a smartphone, stroll through the city with 12 mini-games and 1 enigma to
solve. A cultural and fun trip of approx. 2 h. Free game download from Apple Store and
Google Play. Tablets available for hire from the Tourist Information Centre 5€.
But the pink town also flaunts its Renaissance charm and mineral volutes to seduce
lovers. Declare your undying love at the top of the Tour des Echevins [Tower of
the Aldermen], spend the night in a 3 star hotel and enjoy access to the spa to get
pampered: this is the romantic stay "Rose Princesse" [pink princess] that the Tourist
Information Centre proposes.
Different direction: from the status of lover to nature lover! At a few kilometres
of Luxueil, at the foot of the Vosges mountain range, we put on our hiking shoes
to discover forests, fields and orchards of the region called Voge. At Fougerolles,
between forests and brooks, the red stone path unveils impressive sandstone cliffs.
But there is more pink here: in the cherries of the region of Fougerolles. From the
Eco Cherry museum via countless orchards, package and a la carte trips and hiking
circuits.

• Music & Memory: pink
sandstone as a Baroque theatre
Every summer, for the past 23 years already,
Baroque music is especially highlighted in the
churches, chapels and on pop-up stages in
the Region of the Thousand Lakes : this is the
festival Musique & Mémoire, in Haute-Saône.
From 15 to 31 July 2016, it welcomes the
following musical ensembles: Les Timbres,
Les Cyclopes and Allias Mens.

Belfort turns your cheeks pink
Belfort can be explored on a bicycle, nose in the wind. The City of the
Lion was granted the label "Cyclo-tourism City and Region" for the quality
of its animation, welcome, services and equipment adapted to cycling.
Located next to Switzerland, Belfort is connected to the Suissemobile
network (3000 km) with the francovelosuisse, and to Eurovelo6; a
delight for great travellers. In the north of the Region, athletes can ride
the legendary mountain passes from the Tour de France to the Ballon
d'Alsace and the Planche des Belles-Filles. Returning to the base of the
lion of Bartholdi for a stroll through the alleys of the Old Town. A walk
tinted by pink sandstone, like the Saint Christophe cathedral and the
Place d'Armes, the heart of this pretty area. With the family, we stay in
the saddle on the way to the nautical base of Malsaucy or to ride on one
of the numerous cycling paths of the Belfort region.
Even more pink cheeks when entering the citadel... With the family, and
armed with an audio guide, the adventure can start. Stealthily advancing
in the large underground passage, we are propelled in the time and
history of Belfort. Following the enigma and games, and with the help of
Max, the peregrine falcon, we encounter Vauban, the architect of Louis
XVI, D’Artagnan, Princess Catherine of Bourgogne or colonel DenfertRochereau, under the attentive gaze of the lion. Thrilling!
After all that effort and to recover from your emotions, set off to the
industrial district of Belfort for a break at « Au petit répit d’Isana ». A
magical location for ... a nap!
Because it is not reserved to children or old age pensioners, because
its benefits are unanimously recognised, we take a rest of 15, 30 or 60
minutes in this siesta bar. A unique concept in the region, where you
will find a garden, lounges with a cosy atmosphere, deckchairs and
waterbeds, a kitchen corner, a bar serving fruits juices and smoothies
with anti-stress, soothing or tonic properties. It is here, unashamedly,
that you DE-STRESS and see life through pink-tinted glasses again!

Green out for
a ride
It undoubtedly is one of the favourite colours in Franche-Comté! Green.
Nature, plants, chlorophyll, oxygen and even hope or lucky charm: it is all this and more and provides the
vital and precious force of our region. Besides the great routes like the Grandes Traversées du Jura (GTJ)
or the paths of Petites et Grandes Randonnées (PR et GR) that criss-cross the region, other green dots
accentuate Franche-Comté in 2016. Discoveries.

The Path of the Diots du Jura
The Path of the Diots du Jura is a family hike of 11 km, with 12
milestones, to understand everything about the landscape, nature and
gastronomy heritage of the region. At Septmoncel, at the locality Les
Clavières. After the name of the butcher who inspired this path!

At the Rivière-Drugeon, this path designed like
a treasure hunt is a thrilling adventure for the

Hikes, waterfalls and
know-how
Near Saint-Claude, nature and know-how inspire new hiking circuits.
In the Tacon valley, you walk in the footsteps of Ulysse Dalloz, a miller
in the village of Bouchoux. From the Waterfall of the Aval Mill, the
2h30 hike opens onto breath-taking panoramas and tells us the life of
an old mountain village. After rural life, we zoom in on the craftsmen;
hikes of 2,3,4 or 5 days propose a sporty approach of the typical
know-how of the Haut-Jura. From one farm to the next, you walk in
splendid surroundings and you gain a better understanding of the
life of the local people. Farmers in summer, they cut wood, horn or
precious stones for the entrepreneurs of the Saint Claude valley and
neighbouring Switzerland during the long winter months.

It is a regional symbol: the Comté clock. It has paced life and

The other speciality of
Saint Claude
Of Saint Claude we know the pipes and the diamonds, but we are
less informed about that strange speciality of cobblestones in ox
bones (1). Their origin is said to date back to the turning tradition at
Saint Claude in medieval times. The craftsmen would use the bones
and more particularly the longer part of the bone. They threw away
the rest. The metastarses of the bovines where then placed on the
ground, at the entrance of the houses. Those cobblestones were said
to have anti-humidity properties. A dozen of houses still have those
special cobblestones in their entrances, hallways and at the bottom
of the stairs.

FIFTY SHADES
OF GREY
Rebellion: Besançon
Besançon, is of course the Citadel: 10 km of walls, half bastions, sentry
boxes, curtain walls and crescents. The fortress stretches over 12 hectares
and offers us a fabulous journey back in time. It is listed in the World
Heritage of the Unesco and is one of the masterpieces of the architect
Vauban. The Citadel is also the symbol of the rally of the city to the kingdom
of France, after decades of relentless resistance, and often tumultuous
combats and rebellion.
What the king has devastated...
Resist, rebel, fight and combat: Franche-Comté has never been subtle when it comes to defending its land
From 1519, via Charles V and the Habsburg that occupy it, Besançon is
Spanish. At the start of the 17th century, Louis XIII decides to annex the
untameable province to his kingdom. Richelieu takes over the direction of
operations in 1635. Ten years of war and destruction; but Franche Comté
resists. Louis XIV succeeds his father and launches a second offensive in
1668, then a third in 1674. Finally Besancon is defeated. In 1678, Spain
hands over Franche-Comté to Louis XIV. The Treaty of Nijmegen ends the
Spanish rule. The Sun King finally can shine over his new province and
Besancon.

By sharing his strategic and military advice with Louis XIV, Vauban has

ago as the great architect also is the father of its rebuilding and the author
of its most famous monument.
audacity and genius.
Here, at all times, we respect others, the differences, but always with fists in the air rather than handcuffed.
A Citadel of pleasure
Impregnable in the past, the Citadel today is a living and inhabited site:

Resistance: Belfort
Whether French, Prussian or Austrian, the invaders never really managed to
get Belfort to bow down. The city was besieged three times in the 19th century.
But it resists every time. Belfort has conserved numerous testimonials of its
major strategic and military role in that proud and glorious past. First of all the
fortified city wall, the Citadel erected by Vauban and the famous lion by the
sculptor Bartholdi; the posture of the feline is a homage to the resistance of
the city under siege by the Prussians during the war of 1870. Colonel DenfertRochereau leads the movement. Hundred and three days after which the area
that corresponds with the current Territory of Belfort is then the only part of
France to remain French.
Originally the lion had to face the enemy, with its head to the west. But finally,
Bartholdi turned its back to the opponent, in an attitude full of disdain. But it
holds an arrow pointed at the German border in its paws.
Pink with rage
Bartholdi's lion, the walls, ramparts and fortifications as well as the facades
of the houses and monuments of the old town on which he stands guard, are
made of pink sandstone. Extracted from the neighbouring Vosges. A charming
sector of alleys and small squares, pretty design or vintage shops where the
Monument of the Three Sieges is also located. Bartholdi's last work It depicts
Legrand, Lecourbe and Denfert-Rochereau. The three officers here surround
4 characters: France carrying a cock, supporting the City of Belfort, holding a
sword, a young fighter and a little Alsatian girl.
New conquests
Past the bridges and the Savoureuse river, the city opens on the modern city
centre and the residential neighbourhoods that stretch to the gates of the
large industrial sites. Alstom, GE and their sub-contractors took Belfort and
its territory to the top of mechanical and microtechnical performance. Always
that sense of challenge!
The strongest
The tour of the forts unveils the fortified belt around the Territory of Belfort,
dotted with its original works that narrate the most illustrious pages of the
history of Belfort from medieval times to the late 19th century. From fort to
fort, the level of this original cultural walk is accessible to all. All in all, 90
kilometres of signposted paths to be hiked in stages, depending on your
ability. Amongst mountains, plains, woods and lakes, a tailor-made itinerary
to discover one of the smallest French departments.

The revolt: The route of the abolitions
They have shown bravery, determination and audacity. Far removed from
the great schools of thought, the philosophers and the men of power,
in their countryside, the population of Franche-Comté have marked the
Great History with heroic acts that turned the whole humanity upside
down.
The roots of the Route for the abolition of slavery lay here.
On 19 March 1789, on the eve of the French revolution, the inhabitants
of Champagney, a small municipality of Haute Saone, meet in front of
the town hall and solemnly condemn slavery and the exploitation of
Humanity. They draw up article 29 of their list of demands. A founding
action of Human rights and also avant-garde as this is the eve of the
French Revolution. This commitment today is echoed in a museum: the
Maison de la Negritude. An essential stage in the Route of the abolition
of slavery.
We remain in the wings of the abolitions to visit the dizzy heights of the
Castle of Joux at la Cluse et Mijoux (Doubs) whose history is marked
by Toussaint Louverture. Born as a slave in Santo Domingo in 1743,
he becomes General Governor of his colony before fighting for the
independence of Haiti. The black general was a predecessor of the fight
for the abolition of slavery until he was imprisoned in the Castle of Joux
where he died on 7 April 1803. The site narrates his history and character.
"The habitants of Champagney cannot think of the suffering of the
negroes in the colonies without feeling the sharpest of pains in their
hearts"
Article 29 of the list of demands of Champagney, 19 March 1789
"By overturning me only the trunk of the tree for the Freedom of the
Blacks was felled in Santo Domingo, it will grow back by the roots as they
are deep and numerous."
Toussaint Louverture, 7 June 1802
12
"When Toussaint Louverture came, it was to take the Declaration of the
Human Rights literally, it was to show that there is no racial pariah, that
there is no marginal country, that there is no exceptional people."
Aimé Césaire, the leader of the Negritude movement, holder of the International
Toussaint Louverture award, granted by the UNESCO.
Born in 2004, the « Route of the abolitions of slavery », is part of the
international project of the « Route of slavery » supported by the UN and

10 May 2001 adopted by France about « the recognition of the traffic of
slaves and slavery as a crime against humanity ».

Jean-Léon Gérôme, Antiquity and

Jean-Léon Gérôme was born in Vesoul in 1824. The son-in-law of a
famous art dealer, Gérôme lived in opulence and social recognition,
continuously producing ultra academic paintings, tinted by antique
history and eastern influences. The trend was a hit with American
collectors and gallery owners during the lifetime of the artist. In
cinema, to represent Antiquity, the film makers draw from scenes,
backdrops and postures depicted by Gérôme. Guazzoni for “Quo
vadis ?” (1912), Wyler for “Ben Hur” (1959) or Ridley Scott for
“Gladiator” and “Exodus”. Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, the

Aurélien is the young chef of this great kitchen. Originating from the
region, he learned the trade with a few big names in French cuisine such as
Bernard Loiseau and Romuald Fassenet. Love at first sight for the summer

and radish sprouts, crispy vegetables and vinaigrette with brown shrimp.

la Rôtisserie
Can you smell it? That lovely smell of roasting chicken... we are in the
Rivotte sector, at the foot of the Citadel of Vauban. An establishment that
does not just carry the name: this is a rotisserie, a real one. With a fire,
roasting spit, copper pot etc! Here, quality chickens, beef ribs, knuckle of
pork and andouillettes are browning on the fire. And of course everything is
home-made - including the desserts and the first courses. To be savoured
here or to take away. And on Sunday morning there is a small market that
proposes the dishes of the Rotisserie in addition to regional produce.

100% fresh regional produce: that is the motto of restaurant Le Local.
Located on the bank of the Canal des Tanneurs, Le Local is undoubtedly
one of the prettiest terraces in the region. The former tanner's mill managed
to preserve the industrial spirit that makes the place so charming. Wood,
bricks, concrete, metal, vintage furniture, old vinyl records as placemats: the
atmosphere is very special here. Quirky and authentic.

a vintage and workshop feel that perfectly suits the atmosphere and the
concept.
In the kitchen, a woman: Raphaëlle Vernier, the owner of the place. Trained

themes: « The world of Marguerite », the iconic cow of the region, the Montbéliarde ; « the Morézienne », a homage to the
neighbouring village where spectacles where made; « Wood in all its states » covers this cosy nest with contemporary
grey tavaillons (fine regional wooden tiles). And finally, "Along the Water" that rocks the night with the babbling of the

The white of Franche-Comté is of course that of the snow that clothes our mountain ranges, from the
tops of the Vosges to those of the Jura and brings us closer in heart and spirit to the great Nordic myths.
It is also that, more confidential but equally fascinating, of the salt that wells up from the earth, carried
by the saline waters. In the past coveted by the world leaders, the white gold today is appreciated for its
thermal properties and the amazing heritage it left us.

At the Spa of revival
The water sources a wealth of minerals and oligo-elements in the soil
and the rocks of the Jura mountain range. Salins-les-Bains exploits this
richness since the 13th century to trade them and distil the benefits
of the rock salt in its spas. Natural salted water used for articular
troubles and anxiety in particular. But the spas of Salins les Bains also
are a tonic and wellness destination for all.
And the event in 2016: the spa resort receives a new setting.
In the heights of the city, an area of 2800 m2 fits the relief of the Fort
Belin hill.
The space, the light and the overhead views of the surrounding
landscapes have influenced the design of this ambitious project.
As soon as you enter the reception hall, the eye wanders to the thermal
fun pool equipped with bubbling benches, jacuzzi and against the
current river. A wellness and beauty zone with hammams, saunas and
caldarium-type pools as well as seven beauty treatment booths.
The treatment and health zone benefits from high quality equipment
that exploit the quality of the thermal water of the resort.

Industrial journey in Tavaux and Damparis

It is a city in the city: the Solvay workers' city The Belgian group, the
world leader of the chemistry sector founded in 1863 by Ernest Solvay
was established here in 1927. To house its workforce, a first plan titled
"general lay-out of the housing" was supplied in 1928 by the architecture
department of the Solvay company in Brussels. Workers', foremen's and
engineers' houses pop up. Soon the city and life get organised: in total 265
twin houses, 11 apartment buildings, a school, a hospital and a church.
The initial plan included other constructions, including a house for the
director. This project was replaced with the acquisition of the "Clos de
Belvoye", in the neighbouring municipality of Damparis.
A very pretty property and a unique industrial heritage from now on open
to the public.
With the help of a local theatre company, you buy your return ticket to that
recent past where the factory represented a paradise of freedom for the
young generations originating from the rural world. An unusual guided
tour where you follow a farmer father who sees his son setting off to that
workers' city in search of a new life.

The virtuous water of Velleminfroy conquers the world
The Velleminfroy could well become THE new health and well-being water.
A water with recognised mineral properties since 1828, when Dr Jacquez
discovered a small water flow by accident and quenched his thirst with it
during a walk in Haute-Saône, between Lure, Luxeuil-les-Bains and Vesoul. He
immediately noticed the beneficial effects on his body: the water of Vellimfroy
is purgative, diuretic and laxative.
It is only 30 years later that a more thorough tests are done on a sample, which
demonstrate an exceptional mineralisation of 3.15 g/litre.
After the approval of the Académie Impériale de Médecine on 29 December
1859, drilling work was started with the purpose of exploitation and sale to
the public.
A prosperous period follows for Velleminfroy : persons taking the waters flock
him from throughout Europe and the water is exported up to Algeria, Indochina
and America. But although the spring never runs dry, its exploitation ended
over the years due to the succession of owners.
It is only in 2004 that Paul Poulaillon, a company director acquires it. His
objective: bring that almost forgotten spring back to life and promote its
"miraculous properties".
The challenge is ready to be faced because in 2016 one of the waters with
the highest mineral content in France will again be bottled and distributed
throughout the world. As for the inhabitants of the village and its surroundings,
they can continue using their dear spring without limits on the historic site. The
spring is reputed to promote longevity.
