The Ministry of VOLUNTEERS for Children
The church’s language about ministry refers to service. To serve another in the name and
spirit of Jesus is to be in ministry. All of God’s people are called to be ministering persons. Our
abilities are important resources for others. Ministry happens in a wide variety of settings: some
within the church, and some outside its immediate scope. (Making Disciples by William H.
Willimon, 1990). This article is part of a series of articles that will feature God’s people from
FirstChurch who are answering the call.
If you were fortunate as a child to participate in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School or summer
camp, then you probably have very fond memories...of paper bag puppets, singing “Kum By Ya” and
“Jesus Loves Me,” crayons, glue, and skits about Joseph and His Coat of Many Colors or Moses in the
Bull Rushes and much, much more!
Today’s children at FirstChurch continue the tradition
as they, too, Walk the Way, learning about Jesus, discipleship, helping others, and much, much more. Monday,
June 27th, FirstChurch 2nd floor was filled with over 100
children, ages 4 years to 5th grade ages, and many more
adults! The sounds of “where do I go,” “I want to go
there!” “but I don’t want to go home now!” and much,
much more echoed throughout the halls.
One of the exciting parts of this blessed event was the
spontaneous and generous response of the volunteer
workers who were present to greet, welcome, enroll, escort, comfort, hug, encourage, teach, sing, help, feed, and,
most of all….personally demonstrate the love of Jesus
Christ throughout the halls and classrooms of this church.
Amanda Fahnestock, Children’s Director, eagerly awaited the first arrivals, noting that T Shirts
had been ordered, supplies were laid out, and workers had signed on. To her delight, even though
she had ordered more than expected, she had to order even more T Shirts after the first night! Even
more delightful...more volunteers arrived than
had signed on initially! “What a wonderful problem to have!” announced Amanda.
The VBS children have adopted
“Soles4Souls” as their “mission” and shoes are
filling the collection boxes. If you have some gently used shoes or would like to offer new ones, the
“Soles4Souls” box is located on the second floor
across from the elevator and near the office entrance.
Amanda wanted to list every worker but the
list is almost endless; however, she particularly
wanted to recognize four ladies who have been
instrumental in the planning and organization
of this memorable event: Anne Hardegree, Jovan Cosper Pickett, Lisa Wegner, and Katherine
Pearce. Remember to thank God in your prayers for these dedicated teachers and workers:
creating fond memories and building a strong
faith in our children!

KIDS EAT FREE!
July 5—August 19, 2016
Kids Hunger doesn’t
take a Vacation…..
4.8 Million

Hunger
THANK YOU! Everyone who have signed on to cook or
drive during KIDS EAT FREE! We are ready to begin on July
5th! What a generous church family, you ARE! Many thanks
to Dana Bollinger and Cindy Harper, who have offered their
hands, feet, and backs to oversee the kitchen and purchase
most of the groceries.
This year we will also prepare meals for Bethel United
Methodist Church. This is their first year to participate in the
program and we eagerly anticipate about 25 children will
come to eat at Bethel. We will welcome back over 150 children and their care givers when they come to Immanuel Baptist and Calvary Baptist Churches.
Sadly, Tom Green County has more than 60% of all students receive free or reduced meal
benefits while in school. One out of every 4 families with children had times this past year when
there was not enough money to buy food. That represents 5,400 households in San Angelo!!
Fortunately, FirstChurch will receive help once again from St. Luke’s UMC and Emmanuel
Episcopal Churches. Each church team will prepare meals in our kitchen for 2 weeks each.
FirstChurch is responsible for 3 weeks.
Your Prayers are most needed to support and encourage all our workers.
If you are cooking or delivering, we are most appreciative. You will be doubly blessed as you
work with your church family members in serving these precious children.
This is a critical year since donations have been down. If you are able, monetary
1 in 4 children donations through our Memorials will help cover the costs of this ministry. We
have been fortunate in the past to not have to rely on funding from outside
in Texas are
groups.
This has always been a totally church supported endeavor. We strive to
food-insecure
keep meals at less than $1.50 per plate. Your help in any way is most appreciated.

News about “Holy Conversations”
If you were one of the 127 interested persons who were at an open invitation
meeting on Monday, June 13th in Celebration Hall this article probably won’t
be news to you. But if you were not present we want you to be informed.
In late April, our church leaders met in consultation with Rev. Steve Purdy,
our District Superintendent. Out of that meeting came a decision to invite Rev.
John Thornburg of the Texas Methodist Foundation to come bring the church
information about a process available to us, whereby we can work with the Holy Spirit to move the
church forward in terms of long range planning for ministry.
The process is called “Holy Conversations.” Rev. Thornburg leads churches in a process of prayer and discernment and information gathering and assessment, the goal of which seeks to find
where God is at work and discerning how it is that God is calling us, the church, to partner in the
work that God is already doing. If a church participates in this consultation and if the church
chooses to buy into the results of the process, the door can be opened for spiritual and temporal
revitalization and transformation, both in the church and in the lives of church members.
The cost of the consultation is three thousand dollars and typically takes six months to complete.
A diverse team of 8 – 12 church members representing the congregation is appointed to work with
Rev. Thornburg throughout the process.
Our Church Council will meet in regular session of July 11th at 5:30 in Celebration Hall (Note the
change in location from Cheers classroom). All church meetings with the exception of Staff/Pastor
Parish Relations Committee are open to all members and constituents. Voting is the responsibility
of duly elected Church Council members. The Council will engage in discussion and a vote will be
taken to determine if we enter into the Holy Conversations process. If the church votes to move
forward with the process, a tentative plan would be for the Council to prayerfully enter into a selection process to appoint the team members and have that team in place by the end of August. The
Holy Conversations process would begin in September with Rev. Thornburg’s first in a series of
consultation visits.
While there were mixed responses from attendees at the Monday night meeting, it seemed clear
that people want the church to be “different” than it currently is. There seemed to be a consensus
that if Holy Conversations can be the catalyst to initiate that difference then the church should
move forward. Your Messenger staff will strive to keep you informed as new developments happen.
Want to hear Rev. Thornburg’s presentation “Holy Conversations”
made June 13?? Our website has a recording available: FirstMethodist.net/News.
There will be a S/PPRC meeting, Tuesday, July 5, 5:30 pm in the Office Conference Room.
Church Council meets Monday, July 11 at 5:30 pm in Celebration Hall.

Godspell at FirstChurch—Thank
You Youth!!!
By Tony Walker
Welcome to Youth new Confirmation families! You have joined us on the back side of the youth
2015/16 calendar year. We have our annual youth parent meeting about the time school begins
where you will receive more youth information for the year ahead 2016/17. To everyone, I hope that
all are having a great summer so far on this first day of Summer. I know that many of have taken off
for summer camps and vacations, thanks for the kind words from many of you regarding your kids
Spirit tour experience, thanks to those that attended the Godspell worship service and thanks to
those of that provided input regarding your summer schedules, it has been helpful!
The youth Summer Sunday School schedule will follow the children’s schedule the next two
Sundays. There will be NO Children or Youth Summer Sunday School on July 3. Summer Sunday School will return to its normal schedule on July 10. If you’re in town, come join us!
There is another service opportunity for youth and their families this summer. The Kids Eat
program could use some volunteer chefs (cooking assistants) for head chef Betsy Sadler. Betsy
makes it easy! If you can follow directions, have a heart for service and would like to give your
time to the Kids Eat Program you can volunteer any morning or multiple mornings. First Methodist will be responsible for filling slots to help cook for the first two weeks of July and first
week of August. Other churches have volunteered their services to help with the rest of the summer meals. We host the meal preparation at First Methodist and transport the meals to the host
feeding site. Contact Betsy Sadler or fill out the information at church in your worship service
or FirstPlace Café. Betsy is at [email protected] or 374-8798.
I’m headed to the mountains for a few vacation days next week. You will hear from me when
I return. In the meantime everyone enjoy your summertime it will go fast and please feel free to
contact me if you have any questions.

COSTA RICA MISSION 2016
July 30—August 6, 2016
Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you
wherever you go.
By Brenda Stone
"¿No te lo he ordenado Yo? ¡Sé fuerte y valiente! No temas ni te acobardes, porque el SEÑOR tu Dios estará contigo
dondequiera que vayas." Joshua 1:9
This very special passage from Joshua is our theme for the 2016 Mission Trip to Costa Rica. God
has called 19 of His servants to Costa Rica this summer to be strong and courageous, to not be frightened or dismayed because we know our Lord will be with us. We have prayed and worked diligently
to prepare our minds, our hearts and our bodies for this trip. We ask you to be in prayer for: Karena
Doss, Drew Dozier, Colby Grimes, Kevin Grimes, Sarah Hall, Matt Hardegree, Sam and Julianne
Hunnicutt, D’Ann Kuhlmann, Kevin Porche, Steve and Vickie Purdy, Ray Stubblefield, Mary Slatton,
Courtney Stinson, Brenda Stone, Jimmie and Nelda Von Gonten and Kelly Von Gonten.
We have worked hard to earn the funds needed to go on a trip of this magnitude. We have had a
pancake and sausage breakfast and hosted the FABULOUS “Pura Vida Coffee House” event where
we listened to wonderful music and enjoyed coffee and lemonade along with wonderful sandwiches
and desserts prepared by some of your very hands! At this event, we also auctioned off some fabulous art painted and donated by local artists for this mission. We sold really awesome Pura Vida coffee mugs to remind us to live with the “Pura Vida” lifestyle in mind and heart. Yes, we have been diligent! We have also received financial support for some of our church family and we are forever
grateful for your support.
On July 30th, we will board a plane together as we travel to San Jose, Costa Rica. While there, we
will do construction work on the Methodist Children’s Home in Coronado, Monday through Thursday. After we work at the construction site, we will travel to area churches later in the afternoon to
lead Vacation Bible School for area children. Unless you’ve experienced it first hand, I can’t tell you
the heart- warming feeling you get when those precious children start to arrive for VBS. Some we
will remember from years past and others will see our faces for the first time and us theirs. While we
won’t know until we get there what we’ll be working on while at the construction site, I believe we
may be working on the multi-purpose building that is a work in progress. Two homes we have previously worked on are now full of the laugher of children!
For Vacation Bible School, we will be prepared to show the children the love of God through the
stories of Daniel and the Lions’ Den and also using a butterfly craft, the story of being a New Creation in Christ. We will also have other craft activities and an outdoor activity for them. Each day, we
go prepared for 100 children. There may be on 30 or there may be over 100. We go prepared and
ready!
Each evening, after dinner, devotionals will be led by team members and we will all have the opportunity to share “where we saw Christ at work today”. For me, it’s one of the hi-lights of the day.
We do indeed, work, pray and worship together! Each team member has a secret prayer partner for
whom they are praying. We pray as we hold a small cross in our hand with the name of the person
engraved on the side, lovingly made by Kevin Porche. On our last evening before we leave to come
back home, we will reveal whom we have been praying for and give them their cross. To God be the
Glory!
Most mission trips aren’t complete without a bit of fun and relaxation. So, we will also play together! Following our work week, we will enjoy La Paz Waterfall Gardens with the most beautiful
waterfalls in Costa Rica and over 100 species of animals.
We are so grateful to our church family for the support you have given us and will continue to give
us. We thank you for your prayers and we thank you for your financial support. We could never embark on a mission such as this without both! Pura Vida and God Bless you!!

ESTATE PLANNING
When was the last time your will had a
check up? Does it express your desires?
Does it include your church that means
so much to you?
