A 35-year-old man is hospitalized with abdominal pain, fever (103°F), and
bloody diarrhea for 2 days after a trip to Mexico 2 weeks ago. He denies
any nausea and vomiting. During his vacation, he took ciprofloxacin
as prophylaxis against traveler’s diarrhea. His brother has a history of
