Smoke ‘Em if You Got “Em
What has become an annual Winston-Salem event
heralding the arrival of summer originated in a downtown
church parking lot in 2005. Daring to promote a whole
‘nother type of ‘cue; something beyond Lexington style
BBQ, promoter Allen McDavid launched the first ever
Twin City RibFest with Shiner Bock beer as the title
sponsor. “Where is it written that pork barbecue has to be
chopped or shredded?” McDavid asked.”There is more
to the pig than shoulders and butts.” The success of
the Twin City RibFest was immediate and helped it gain
recognition in Bon Apetit magazine and MarthaStewart.
com, as well as being named a Top 20 Event by the
Southeast Tourism Bureau. In 2007 a local icon, Texas
Pete hot sauce, signed on as the title sponsor and ever
since the festival has been known as the Texas Pete
Twin CIty RibFest.
In 2009 the RibFest relocated to the Dixie Classic
Fairgrounds where it stayed for three years. Despite the
extra room and other amenities the new location had,
McDavid determined that the event belonged where it
was born, in downtown Winston-Salem. The WinstonSalem Journal provided the RibFest a new downtown
site and a new marketing partner. The 2012 Texas Pete Twin City RibFest returned to downtown
to the delight of its longtime attendees.
Even after having to move
around a couple of times the
Texas Pete Twin City RibFest
continues to thrive with its simplistic combination of national
BBQ purveyors competing for
awards and customers, and
quality entertainment on its
music stages. Musical acts
over the years have included
local, regional, and national
acts including the Avett Brothers, Vanilla Ice, Cyrille Neville,
Hal Ketchum, and many more.
This year the festival runs from
June 6 to June 9, and will host
nine nationally recognized
“ribbers”, including four from
North Carolina. Headline music
acts include HOBEX, Chatham County Line, and a finalist from the first season of “The Voice”,
Casey Weston. New features include a mock saloon and a special discount day called Throwback Thursday with reduced admission coupons and food and beverage specials throughout the
event. For more information go online to TwinCityRibFest.com.

Shine Shop
Written by Louis Money
“There are detailers and then there are these guys”, is a quote from Thomas duPont from the
duPont Registry. In fact, Scott Connor has a lot of influential and high profile clientele. But the
good news is, you do not have to be a big corporate executive to come to the Shine Shop on
Bartlett Street in Greensboro, you just have to care about the quality of the car and the quality
of the job being done.
Everything is done by hand
at the Shine Shop, and by
qualified professionals.
Scott Connor was
born and raised here in
Greensboro, started his
business as a high school
kid at Western Guilford, and
eventually needed to drop
out of his Junior year at
UNCG due to the booming
business. Though the
Shine Shop has only been at their current location for a year, it has not only been cleaning, but
perfecting cars for over 25 years.
People come in from all over the country after being voted one of the best detailers in the

world by the duPont Registry; they are
the only detail shop to make the list in this
area.
One fact that I learned while visiting
the Shine Shop is that you should have
your car detailed before you trade it in.
Because detailing your car increases the
value of your trade in. Good to know.
It is not all about detailing your cars,
boats, trailers, or motor homes for Scott,
either. Sometimes you have to give back
to the community. The Shine Shop has
been active in many local charities. They
organized “Cars for Critters” and 100% of
the proceeds went to the Guilford County
Animal Shelter.
So if you want to be treated like a
high roller, do not trust just any fly-by-night
“detail shop.” Trust your investment with
real professionals who are active in the
community. Remember, there are detail
shops, and then there is the Shine Shop.

Meet Linda Weaver
by Jim Tedder
Linda Weaver’s passion for photography and painting is
evident in the success she has been able to enjoy practicing these crafts professionally for almost 3 decades. She
is best known for her portraits of children with an uncanny
ability to capture the world of a child, and has received
national acclaim in her work. Many of her subjects are the
children of prominent families in the Southeast. Weaver
is equally adept at painting adult portraits and is a master
in a wide range of styles, whether it be highly realistic or
subtly impressionistic. She has received numerous artistic
excellence awards for her painting including many ‘Best
of Show’ awards, and is represented by Portraits Inc., and
Portraits South, brokers who get her commissions
nationwide.
Weaver takes the time to meet with her clients, sometimes
several times, before the actual painting work begins.
These meetings allow her to take photographs and get to
know the needs, desires and personality of her subjects as
well. Commissions usually take three to four months to complete from start to finish.
In addition to her talent and accomplishments in freehand original portraits, Weaver is also highly
acclaimed and accomplished in the photographic world. She regularly exhibits, judges and lectures on
the craft throughout the United States and Europe. Her gift in photography goes very well with her portrait
work, giving her the ability to capture her subject for reference in painting her portraits.
In the world of photography, she has received many professional
awards including:
-American Society of Photographers Fellowship and
Associate Degrees
-The Eastman Kodak Gallery of Excellence Award
-The Professional Photographers of America Master
Artist, Master Photography and Craftsman Degrees
-Certified Professional Photographic Specialist
-The Professional Photographers of America National
Award
-American Photographic Artisans Guild Laurel Degree
and Service Award
-The Professional Photographers of North Carolina
Fellowship and Associate Degrees
-Carolina Artisans Guild Fellowship Award and Service
Degree
Linda Weaver’s studio is located in Reynolda Village in
Winston Salem. The studio includes a gallery, painting
studio, camera room and photographic darkroom.

Business Networking
Business Networking 101
Written by Teddy Burriss - Networking Strategist
We all love a great networking event. What you do at these
events will determine the value you and others get from your
time there.
We have the opportunity to attend another networking
event nearly every week of the month. All kinds of events,
including www.336Events, Chamber of Commerce, as well as
numerous civic, community and association events.
When we walk into the room, we will need to be prepared.
For some, being prepared means having a pocket full
of business cards, one hand to hold the drink and/or hors
d’oeuvres and the other hand ready to greet as many people as possible. This type of networker
is focused on getting to as many people in the room as physically possible, doling out business
cards with reckless abandon while collecting an equal number of cards and shoving them into
the other pocket. Like the Tasmanian devil, this networker can navigate the room without spilling
any soda or snacks as they move from person to person. We call this networker a Gripping ‘n
Grinning Business Card Swapper.
For others, being prepared means showing up early, ready to listen and share interesting stories. This networker will quickly catch up with the regulars before someone new to the group (or
someone who has been away for a while) shows up to the event. This networker will walk up to
someone they have not talked with in a while and strike up a conversation. If needed, they’ll introduce themselves by name only and then ask something like, “Glad to meet you. What brought
you out to this networking event?” This networker will stay focused on the person they are listening to and only share interesting and relevant stories. This networker is here to meet people,
share ideas, stories, and to enjoy a good conversation. We call this networker a Connector.
After the networking event, the Gripping ‘n Grinning Business Card Swapper will cold call
every card they collected. The Network Connector will have coffee, sweet tea, or soda with their
new connection and maybe strengthen the relationship that they started during their conversation.
The Gripping ‘n Grinning Business Card Swapper is after names, phone numbers, and email
addresses. The network connector is there to make a new connection that can become mutually
beneficial.
Consider who you are the next time you attend a networking event.
