April 10, 2016, Third Sunday of Easter
Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
How do we maintain Easter joy in a world that does not want us to be joyful for more
than a nanosecond? How can God expect us to forget about the troubles of this world and
even in our personal lives? Society seems to be going to hell in a hand basket and living with
joy is just too much to ask! It does sound too difficult to live a life of joy in the midst of such
circumstances.
I want to take a few moments and address this seeming lack of confidence in God’s
mighty power to bring his love and joy into our hearts. About 99% of the Catholics I know deeply believe that God
is love and joy. They believe that the fullness of heaven will be a place of joy. I do not think I know anyone who
does not believe in a heavenly kingdom of joy.
I do know many people who do not believe in joy during this life; that our life has to be always a walk in the
valley of tears. For many, the tragedies of life steal our joy and lead you or me if not to a state of despair at least
to a far too long depression. So how can I be joyful when life is so bad?
It behooves us to recognize the difference between joy and happiness. In common usage, “joy” and
“happiness” could very well be seen as synonyms. One could say, “I was overjoyed at his coming,” or “I was
happy when he came,” and mean the same thing. However, the words have two distinct meanings and
applications. Even a casual listener would distinguish between “rejoice” and “be happy.” Joy suggests a more
complete, ecstatic, consuming passion than mere happiness. In short, “happiness” can be described as an
emotion, while “joy” is more properly related to a state of one’s being.
Happiness is easily taken away when the “state of well-being” ceases; in times of hardship, trial, or need,
happiness seems elusive. Something more satisfying is needed than the mere pleasure or contentment associated
with happiness.
Joy, in contrast, is defined as an intense and especially ecstatic or exultant happiness or the expression of
such feelings. The antonym of joy is “sorrow.” “Enjoying” (related to happiness) is not the same thing as
“rejoicing.” Joy has several deeper meanings than happiness, which are further clarified in Holy Scriptures. In the
Bible, joy can mean:
1. The response of the soul to a great and wonderful discovery, such as truth or communion with
God — Luke 1:44 — For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb
leaped for joy.
2. A personal fullness or sense of completeness in one’s entire life — John 15:11 — These things I
have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and your joy may be filled. (cf. also Jn. 17:13)
3. A deep peace which comes from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within a person, and lasts despite
hardship — John 16:22 — So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and
your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you.
4. The fruit of faith, hope, and love — Hebrews 10:34 — For you both had compassion on them that
were in bands, and took with joy the being stripped of your own goods, knowing that you have
a better and a lasting substance.
Many thanks to Catholic Exchange for the above. It is a good and trustworthy web site.
Easter makes joy an option for you and me. There are times when we will not be happy [death of a loved one,
loss of employment, et al.] but we never have to be joyless. There is never a time when God is not with us —
never a time when all is lost — never a time when there is no hope. Joy is not a Pollyanna mindset, but the reality
that each of us a life of self-worth and dignity as a son or daughter of our Heavenly Father.
The great battle between good and evil has been fought and good won, continues to win and invites us to be
filled with joy and join the winning team. Be joyful.
Pax et bonum,

Volunteer Accountant Needed
Fr. John Ugobueze, who lives with us here at St.
Vincent de Paul Parish, has begun a multi-year
project to build a high quality, Western-style hospital
in a rural area of Nigeria. A team of experienced
professionals in the healthcare field including a
hospital design architect and a major Houston law
firm have already volunteered to help. To complete
our team of professionals we will need the assistance
of an Accountant. Because of the transnational nature
of this project we would prefer the pro bono
assistance of a national accounting firm that has an
association with a Nigerian accounting firm.
Early in his vocation, Fr. John served for 10
years as pastor of a rural Nigerian parish where he
personally worked with countless poor, sick,
disabled, and mentally disabled parishioners who
often suffered serious illnesses. Some suffered
painful deaths because quality medical services were
too far away or too expensive. This hospital project
for rural Nigeria has the blessing of the Nigerian
Archbishop of Onitsha, Anambra state.
If you are a Accountant with a major accounting
firm, please volunteer to help Fr. John in moving this
work of mercy closer to becoming a reality. You may
leave a message for Fr. John at the Parish Office:
713-667-9111 or contact Father John: 217-530-2610.

HOW IS GOD, IN HIS INFINITE LOVE,
CALLING YOU?
Fr. Donald Calloway is not whom you expected. Donny
Calloway was raised knowing nothing of God, and lacking
a loving father did not experience the loving fatherhood of
God until his life had spiraled so far out of control that
death was the obvious next step. By God’s grace in a final
desperate moment, Mary, the mother of Jesus called him to
her Son. How chillingly far the 15-year old Donny had fallen (he was deported from Japan for numerous crimes which
would have been felonies in the US) and how gloriously he
was rescued is fully recounted in Fr. Calloway’s youthful,
energetic style. This Light-house Catholic Media CD “No
Turning Back: A Witness to Mercy” allows us to share in
Fr. Calloway’s all-consuming and whirlwind-paced embrace of God at the eleventh hour.

St. Vincent de Paul Book Club
Do you remember the Gospel story of Jesus and the rich
young man? If you want to know what would have happened if the young man had actually done what Jesus told
him, listen to this CD. Eric Mahl’s vocation story takes him
from playing in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, to
roaming the streets of Cleveland ministering to the homeless – all before the age of 30 – and eventually brought him
to the Divine Mercy National Shrine in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Along the way, he chose to give away all his money, his possessions, and his lifestyle to serve God. He gave
the money to the poor – exactly what Jesus told the rich
young man. This Light-house Catholic Media CD “Being
All In” is radical, mind-bending, and recommended!
The SVDP Book Club will meet Wed. April 13, 10:30am
until 12:00 Noon, MJFC 206. The selection for April is
Lila by Marilynne Robinson. It is available at Harris
County and Houston Public Libraries, Amazon and Barnes
and Noble in paperback and hard back, new and used. If
you're interested in reading religious and secular literature,
recent bestsellers and classics, the SVDP Book Club might
be for you. Members suggest the books and we read them
as they are randomly suggested. The person who suggests
the book leads the discussion. The discussions are always
lively. We welcome new members and are happy to see
those who have not attended in a while. For more information please contact Mary Ann Beachler 713-665-0086
or [email protected]).
Brought to you by the SVDP Vocations Committee.

REDEMPTION
Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested?
He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are
called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he
does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for
him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful
imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the
book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when
we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under
the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and
pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of
Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that we
can all be redeemed so completely! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

la verdad y proclamaron sin temor la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo. Qué fácil hubiera sido mentir, negar a Jesús;
niega a Jesús.

juzgado y crucificado. ¡Qué alivio que todos podemos ser
tan totalmente redimidos! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
muchos comulgantes regalan a sus amigos y parientes
alguna estampita religiosa.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
