The visual arts are not only naturally fun,
participation in art programs help a child:

projects challenge and engage to build confidence and skills.
18 clay camp options this year! From handbuilding to the potter’s wheel,
campers learn fundamentals and make treasures to keep.
Expanded options for Ages 5-6 including half-days and full-days. With 94
classes to choose from, parents may customize weekly camps to fit schedules
and child interests! To make it easier, Group A classes are themed by day of
week. Children do something different and fun everyday. Mix and match!
Highly qualified teaching artists deliver quality art projects.
Campers work in state of the art studios with talented artists. Plus the
on-site museum quality gallery offers a source of perspective and inspiration.
Wholesome, nutritious lunches and snacks are available at the Art Center Café,
open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Creative Kids Academy, a NAEYC accredited childcare facility right next door,
is available for before or after class childcare if needed. Call 952.473.1225 and

This program offers complete flexibility! Children ages 5 to 6 may register for half- or full-days as many times a week as
desired (1 to 10 classes a week). Classes may be combined in any way to work with the family schedule and connect with
each child’s interests. Please plan carefully before registering to avoid fees for making changes later (details on page 19).
If attending a full day of two classes, please bring snacks, a bag lunch and beverage or purchase food on-site from the
Art Center Café.

CRITTERS
BIG NATURE BY O’KEEFFE
(1 class)
$38 Members / $42 Non-members
Have fun recreating the lovable pieced
characters of Leo Lionni (1910-1999) like
Swimmy the Fish or Frederick the Mouse
by experimenting with colorful watercolor
and collage techniques. The morning class
will draw and paint creatures of the sea.
The afternoon class will paint the amazing
animals and insects living in the backyard
or garden. Enrollment limited to 16.

Like Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1996), we’ll
magnify shapes and simplify details to
capture nature’s beauty using acrylics and
experiment with basic visual elements of
line, shape and color. The morning class
will paint big flowers inspired by O’Keeffe’s
modernist floral paintings. The afternoon
class will paint bold landscapes inspired
by O’Keeffe’s paintings of New Mexico.

(1 class)
Jasper Johns (1930-) knew at age five that
he wanted to be an artist. He became one
of the most important artists of the 20th
century, clearing the way for pop art in
America by painting unsurprising things
like flags, letters or numbers in surprising
new ways. Come experiment with paint
and collage to find your special art. The
morning class will collage and paint flags.
The afternoon class will create colorful
map collages. Enrollment limited to 16.

KLEE’S CATS AND
CASTLES
VIBRANT FRIDA KAHLO
(1 class)
Famous Swiss artist Paul Klee (18791940) admired the freedom in children’s
artwork and strived to capture that
simplicity in his own art. His well known
Cat and Bird painting sets the stage for
an animal extravaganza! The morning
class will create bright, colorful animal
portraits using paints and mixed-media.
The afternoon class will design a castle
for creatures with colored pencils and
imagination. Enrollment limited to 16.

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)
is best known for very personal self-portraits
and vibrant still lifes using symbols
from her culture. She painted tropical
plants, butterflies, monkeys and Aztec art
symbols. More than anything else, Frida
painted what she knew best – herself and
her beloved Mexico. The morning class
will paint colorful self-portraits filled with
personal symbols. The afternoon class will
explore some Mexican folk art traditions
in mixed-media. Enrollment limited to 16.

oversized sculptures of everyday items.
He once made a giant soft sculpture
hamburger, almost good enough to eat!
What kind of food or object do you

will create a soft sculpture picnic lunch.

ideas for giant public art sculptures like
Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis!

Originator of the mobile, Alexander
Calder (1898-1976) is mostly known
for kinetic sculptures, but he also
created fabulous wire sculptures like his
whimsical and imaginative Cirque Calder.
Using everyday objects and soft bendable
wire, campers will sculpt their own
miniature circus. The morning class
will craft acrobats and performers. The
afternoon class will make circus animals.

STORIES

Create a textile story collage using fabric
shapes, fibers and clever embellishments
inspired by African-American artist Faith
Ringgold (1930-), best known for her
painted story quilts. The morning class
will “paint” a colorful, textured landscape
or cityscape with fabric. The afternoon
class will design and decorate small
figures and creatures out of fabric and
mixed-media. Enrollment limited to 16.

KANDINSKY’S CIRCLE
PAINTING
(1 class)
Russian-born artist Wassily Kandinsky
(1886-1944) began as a realistic painter
but seeing an exhibit of Impressionist
artwork, painting took on a fairy-tale
power and splendor for him. Experience
the excitement of connecting color, form
and sound as in Kandinsky’s circle
paintings. The morning class will paint
brightly colored circles and shapes using
tempera or acrylic paints. The afternoon
class will explore how painting and music
can go together. Enrollment limited to 16.

Learning to draw helps children confidently
express themselves on paper. This class
will introduce tools and techniques and
train the eye to see shapes and details.
We will practice drawing different
subjects and study prints by master artists

It’s time to get hands muddy! Learn clay
handbuilding fundamentals in a fun day
of clay. The morning class will create
a vase perfect for summertime flowers,
holding straws or pencils. The afternoon
class will make pinch pots that can be
shaped, carved, and sculpted in surprising
ways. Projects will be decorated with
colored slips and glazed for finishing,
ready for pickup in three weeks.

super spy team, the Penguins of

Get to know the friendly wood spirits
in the celebrated Japanese animated

recreate the magical cat bus in mixed-media
for a flying fun adventure. Enrollment

realistic rubber fish and sea creatures.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR
DRAGON
(1 class)
There are more than 30 different dragons
in How to Train Your Dragon. That’s
plenty of inspiration! The morning class
will sculpt dragons and other mythical
creatures using air-dry modeling clay and
other art materials. The afternoon class
will create a colorful wind catcher that
might be found in the Isle of Berk.

Join The Incredibles superhero family and
craft props for superhero escapades! As

power to make a superhero mask. The
afternoon class will paint a background
scene and make superhero props for

Embark on an adventure like the Peruvian
bear, Paddington! See where curiosity
leads and what creativity can make. The

Paddington bear and his suitcase of

assemble an imaginary travel adventure
scrapbook. Enrollment limited to 16.
MONSTER UNIVERSITY

There’s nothing scary about these
monsters, they’re friends from Monster
University! The morning class will have
fun drawing and painting monster
buddies like Mike and Sulley. The
afternoon class will continue the mayhem
making mixed-media monsters using
air-dry modeling clay, wood pieces,
chenille stems and other art materials.

Enter a textile tornado! Each day you’ll
learn some basics about knitting, sewing
and textile construction. Using cloth,

Rock like a sculptor and transform a

MOSAIC ART

Mosaic is an art form that’s timeless!
Since about 4,000 years ago, mosaic
art has been embraced culturally and
architecturally. Today a prominent
French street artist, the Invader, leaves his
mark in cities around the world in small
mosaic video game characters playing on
the old 8-bit pixel art of the 70s-80s. Get
inspired by colorful mosaic masterpieces
through history and create your own
mosaic design as you learn the tools of the

Finally! A class that encourages cell
phones! You'll share music and images,
favorite videos and more in an open,
seminar-style class. Then draw, paint
and explore mixed media as you create
background sets for photo images.
We will move between hands-on art and
digital photography with our cell phones.

and patterns can map the inner self and
express your unique story. Explore acrylic
painting techniques, the use of natural
materials and the inclusion of geometry
in design as you create your very own

CERAMIC SCULPTURE
(5 classes)
Create functional and decorative clay
forms, from abstract to portrait
sculptures or figures in action. Practice
basic handbuilding ceramic techniques
and gain greater confidence with
traditional sculpting tools and
construction methods. Projects will
be ready for pickup in three weeks.

FANTASY/SCI-FI
ILLUSTRATION
(5 classes)
Create a wildly imaginative environment,
complete with creatures and characters,
drawing inspiration from contemporary
fantasy and science fiction illustrations.
Use basic drawing and illustration
techniques and a variety of materials to
create thumbnail sketches, design layouts
and develop characters. Enrollment
limited to 16.
GLASS FUSING
(10 classes)
Create brilliant bits of art in wonderfully
reflective glass. Explore the basic
techniques of glass art with a focus on
fusing. Students will create small-scale
projects like sun catchers and tiles while
practicing basic glass cutting, color,
composition and design concepts.

B&W PHOTOGRAPHY
(10 classes)
Introducing students to the camera and
darkroom, this class covers the techniques
and processes of black & white photography
including composition and developing
techniques. Students must provide their
own 35mm SLR camera. Enrollment
limited to 12.

The B&W Photography class has
doubled in length in response to
student requests to provide
sufficient time to achieve success
and proficiency with the photo
taking and photo making process.

SELF-PORTRAITS
REVEALED
(5 classes)
Who are you? How would you express
yourself through art? What do you want
to say? By exploring the self portraits of
artists such as Van Gogh, Andy Warhol,
Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, Joseph
Cornell and Chuck Close, discover
yourself in your own inspired self
portraits. Explore portraiture techniques
and approaches through painting,
drawing, photography and assemblage.
ONE-PAGE COMICS
(5 classes)
Explore a new level of storytelling and
visual communication in the popular
trend of the one-page comic. Express an
idea with words and illustrations and tell
a complete story on one page. Learn how
to develop story concepts, design clever
page layouts and bring it all together
with your unique style. Experiment with
drawing techniques using pencils and
a variety of pen and brush tools.

KINETIC WIRE
SCULPTURE
(5 classes)
Bring metal wire to life so that it sings
and moves freely! Inspired by the kinetic
sculptures of Swiss artist Jean Tinguely,
you’ll use sculpture wire, beads, rods,
paints and metal hardware to sculpt
realistic and abstract shapes. Then explore
ways to add sound and motion to your
designs! Enrollment limited to 16.
GRAPHIC TS
(5 classes)
Bring a T-shirt, whatever style you like
as long as it will lay flat, and transform
it into expressive art that is uniquely you.
Subtle, bold – you decide. Learn about
the process, get some design ideas started,
and then create a look you’ll love! Draw
and cut stencils and combine with
freehand techniques using water-based
inks. Enrollment limited to 12.

STONE CARVING
(5 classes)
It takes some effort to find the threedimensional art inside a rock. It’s in
there and with a hammer and chisel you
can bang it out then file and sand it to
a smooth finish. This is the real thing
– learn traditional carving techniques
that have stood the test of time. Historical
sculptures and artists will be referenced
and a focus on safety maintained through
the class. Enrollment limited to 12.
CHARACTER DESIGN
FOR ANIMATION
(5 classes)
Create compelling characters with depth
and dimension for use in comics,
illustration and animation projects.
Discover the details of character
development and the various artistic ways
of rendering your characters, including
drawing, painting and sculpting small
maquettes. Enrollment limited to 16.

Morning sessions: 9 a.m. to Noon
Lunch break: Noon to 1 p.m.
Afternoon sessions: 1 - 4 p.m.
Campers must be picked up promptly at the end of class.
Late fees are charged at 15 minutes or more.
Please pick up children’s projects on time, typically
three weeks after class end. We strongly recommend
that you bring your child with you to help identify their
project. All unclaimed items will be recycled after
September 18.
MCFTA will do its best to accommodate
children with allergies. As a public venue,
we cannot guarantee a peanut-free facility,
yet steps to control the camp program
environment will be taken where needed.
Ages 5 - 6: Group A
May register for one or two half-day classes per day, for one
or up to five days a week, in one or multiple weekly sessions
through the summer.
Artist-Instructors
Summer Arts Camp instructors are all college graduates
who are either teaching artists or art educators. Camp
assistants and interns are college students currently
enrolled in studio art or art education courses. Every class
has an assigned instructor and most have one or more
assistants.

Ages 7 - 9: Group B
Ages 10 - 12: Group C
Ages 13 - 15: Group D
May register for one or two half-day classes per day, five
days a week in one or multiple weekly sessions through
the summer.
Lunch & Snack Breaks
All classes take a 15-minute supervised snack break halfway
through class. Campers participating in full-day classes take
a one-hour, supervised lunch break. You may pack a bag
lunch and snack for your child or purchase healthy, nutritious
lunches and snacks from the Art Center Café.
Please notify us at least three weeks in advance if your child
has special dietary issues that may affect the other campers
and we will do our best to notify parents of the issue.
Please note: The Art Center is NOT a peanut-free facility.
Camp Attire
Summer Arts Camp classes use high-quality arts materials
for all projects. As some pigments and materials may stain,
please dress your children in appropriate clothing. The Art
Center is not responsible for clothing that is damaged in
art classes. Children will play games outdoors during snack
and lunch breaks, weather permitting. Please dress your
children in appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor play
(closed-toe athletic shoes are best).
Art Project Pick-up
Campers are so proud of their completed artwork! Yet some
ceramics projects need firing and can’t be taken home until
later. Instructors will provide specific pick-up information.
Camp Pricing & Scholarships
Prices are provided with class descriptions. You’ll notice
that the prices for Art Center members are 10% less than
non-member prices. Having a current membership,
or purchasing a $55 household membership at the time
of registration, qualifies for the member discount, which
is valid for all class registrations in 12 months from date
of purchase. Registration payment may be made online
or by phone using Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

Scholarships based on financial need are available for
campers. Funds are limited, so please apply at least 14
days prior to the class start date. Ask the Registrar for
information, 952.473.7361, x. 16, or download an
application form at www.minnetonkaarts.org/SAC.
Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served
basis. Register early for the greatest selection.
All tuition fees must be paid in full when you register.
Class space will not be reserved without full payment.

CANCELLATIONS
There will be a $5 administrative fee charged
per class for all changes, transfers or
cancellations.
Campers who withdraw 29 or more days prior
to the class start date will receive a 100 percent
refund, minus the administrative fee per class.
Campers who withdraw 15 to 28 days prior to the
class start date will receive a 50 percent refund,
minus the administrative fee per class.
No refunds will be issued 0 to 14 days prior
to the class start date.
Campers may transfer from one class to another
up to 14 days prior to the class start date with
a $5 administrative fee per class.
In the case of illness (physician’s note required),
campers may transfer classes until the first day
of class, subject to availability, with a $5
administrative fee per class. No refunds will
be issued after the start of the class due to
illness.
In the event the Art Center must cancel a session
due to insufficient enrollment, a full refund will be
issued. If a session is cancelled, the Art Center
will notify parents five business days before the
class is scheduled to start.
The Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes
that do not meet the enrollment minimum of six or
more campers.
LATE PICK-UP FEES
Caregivers should accompany children to and
pickup from their classrooms. Please do not drop
your child off more than 5 minutes before class
time, unless it is at Creative Kids Academy and
arrangements have been made with them.
At the end of class, please pick up your child
promptly. A $10 per 15-minute late fee per child
will be charged to parents when campers are not
picked up on time after their Summer Arts Camp
activities. Late pick-up fees are due at pick up.
