developed to encourage the joy of
reading for pleasure, and to give the
children of New York State the
opportunity to participate in honoring
their favorite books. After reading or
listening to at least three books from
the above list, you can vote in
January to select one as your
favorite. Once a winner has been
chosen, we will have a party to celebrate. Keep an eye out for a display
of the 15 books and for related activities and raffles in the Children’s and
Parents’ Services Department.

Prize-winning
historian David
M c C u l l o u g h ’s
book, 1776. In this stirring book,
McCullough tells the intensely
human story of those who
marched with General George
Washington in the year of the
Declaration of Independence —
when the whole American cause
was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed.

skills to function fully in society.

Teens now have a new online tool to improve performance on crucial state exams, like the ELA (English
Language Assessment) and college entrance exams,
including the PSAT, SAT and ACT. The program features
complete curriculum overview, plus the opportunity to
self-test with full length practice tests. The testGEAR program is available in the Library or from home. From our

Camera Club
Learn to take better photos from our librarian/photographer Mr. Casper. Each month there will be a new project
with new skills and camera techniques to go with it. At
each session you will be given a camera then we devel-

Question: What is the best way to prepare for the SAT?
Answer: Practice, practice, practice – and attend the 5 session Math and Verbal review we are offering just in time for
the November 4 SAT. Review sessions will be taught by teacher/specialists and will be 2 hours long. Each week you
will receive instruction in both the Verbal and Math portions of the test. Make a commitment to attend this review
class and you will be on your way to improving your SAT scores. Registration is underway and there is a fee of $35

September 26. Registration for non-district patrons (space
permitting) begins on Wednesday, September 27.

Venture with us for a shopping extravaganza at the
Christmas Tree Shop in Orange, CT. Following
your shopping spree, enjoy a scrumptious lunch at
Cracker Barrel in Milford, CT. The price per person
is $49.00 which includes, round trip coach transportation, lunch, all tips and gratuities. Bus trip
tickets are non-refundable. The bus departs the
Community Library at 7:00 a.m.

LearnOnline is an innovative approach to education
that offers users the opportunity to take advantage
of independent study. Through this non-traditional
mode of learning, patrons can use any computer
connected to the Internet, select classes at convenient times and learn at their own pace.
There are over 200 different classes available covering a variety of educational areas. Here is a small

Access, Exploring the Internet, Frontpage 2000,
Grant Writing, Medical Terminology,Quicknowledge,

All programs are available to Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community
Library cardholders and require advanced registration, unless otherwise indicated. Please have your library card available when you
