The Man Behind the Mission
David is lovingly referred to as “The Man
Behind the Mission” here at David’s Refuge.
Hisbeliefthattherewasnothinghecouldn’tdo

say, “I keep doing things I can’t; that’s how I
get to do them.” David climbed waterfalls,

to everyone he met. While many said David
was able to love without judgment due to his
blindness, it was really his passion to follow
Jesus’exampleofunconditionallove. David’s
faith was simple; he loved others as God had
loved him. David modeled for us how we
want to love and accept every family that
comes to David’s Refuge.
Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and
strength, always ready to help in times of
trouble.”There is no doubt David is proud
to know that his story and faith created a
“Refuge”where parentscan be refreshed,
restored and renewed as they care for
their childrenwithspecial needsor those
struggling with a life threatening illness.

“For it is in
giving
that we
Dear Friends,
receive.”
~Francis of Assisi
The picture of David holding my arm for guidance is one of our all-time
favorites. It’s a wonderful reminder of the privilege we had as his parents
to love and guide him though life, ensuring he had every opportunity to
make his life count. When he passed away we made a conscious decision to
pay forward the lessons we had learned from him and so many others. By
giving away his story, his faith and love for God, and his unconditional and
extravagant love, over 250 families have been served by David’s Refuge. We
gave to him, he gave back to us, and now we have the joy of giving to so many
more.
Amazingly this circle of giving and receiving continues to grow. Some of the
families we have served have become hosts who ensure our mission is carried
out with excellence. Many have supported us financially and have given
countless hours in support of our mission. Many of the families we serve
are at a place where they simply need to receive, and that is absolutely OK!
Thankfully, we have many individuals, businesses, and foundations that have
generously given to ensure these families are loved on and
cared for. Francis of Assisi was right when he said, “For
it is in giving that we receive.”
We want to thank you for your partnership and
support of David’s Refuge. Someone once wrote,
“The difference between a helping hand and an
outstretched palm is a twist of the wrist.” Thank
you for twisting your wrist and joining us in
“Caring for the Caregiver.”

medical needs
Jonathan has.
Hope
Emily and Jonathan have a beautiful
relationship. Other children in the home
often have their own struggles associated
with the demands and fears of having a
sibling with special needs.
Jonathan has had numerous surgeries. The
hurt, the unknowns and the continued
medical needs can be depleteing and
something no parent can outrun.
Since opening its doors, David’s Refuge
has provided over 280 respite weekends to
hundreds of local families, all living with daily
struggles and challenges many of us could
never understand. One such family that has
been touched by the mission of David’s Refuge
is the Torrese-Vieru family. Here is a glimpse
into life as they care for their son Jonathan
who was diagnosed with spastic diplegic and
dystonic cerebral palsy at a very young age. “Our children are fragile and parents are
too! We are human and at some point in our
lifetime we all need a renewed sense of being,
understanding and love. David’s Refuge reminds
us that we all matter, we are loved and we are not
alone. It is this love that gives us strength to hold
our children and walk this journey.
This is our life - and it revolves around the

Jonathan is nonverbal and uses a variety of tools to facilitate
communication. His skills are still emmerging, but his
communication is a main concern as he ages and the reality of
his future care continues to grow.
Daddy is the family’s rock; steady, strong and committed to
Jonathan and his needs.

Respite
drive the mission
of David’s Refuge
The weekend getaways that David’s Refuge
provides are only made possible by the
wonderful hosts who have walked a similar
jouney like Jeff and Janelle Fields.
Guests are offered a two night stay at an extravagant B&B.
Each guest is welcomed with fresh flowers and a gift basket.
Their weekend includes a massage and dinner out.
Jeff and Janelle have walked the unwanted
walk of facing serious illness and the
possible death of their child. They knew that
somehow they would use their personal experience to
help others. When David’s Refuge became a reality,
the answer was clear. Along with other hosts, Jeff and
Janelle offer unobtrusive but readily available support
to weekend guests.
“We came tired, weary and
stressed and leave rejuvenated,
happy and encouraged.”

Creating
Rhythm
After a weekend respite, guests are invited to
join our Rhythm of Respite. David’s Refuge
offers four events in addition to our weekend
getaways. These events offer our parents
an opportunity to care for themselves and
connect with other caregivers navigating a
similar journey.
