Message from Yuet Mui Kong, Program Coordinator:
Happy Holidays!
We had a busy but meaningful November: Show and Sell on the 3rd;
UH School of Nursing Health Fair on the 5th; Veterans Day Celebration on the 10th; and Thanksgiving Meal event on the 23rd. Our
senior members also donated five big boxes of canned and nonperishable food to Calvary Assembly of God for families in need.
Thanks to the sponsors, collaborators and donors for making these
programs possible.
While we are enjoying holiday gatherings and shopping, Honolulu
Police Department reported that car break-ins increase 10% during
the holidays. Please check the shopping safety tips on this page, and
share the information with your family and friends.
Wishing you a safe, happy and peaceful holiday season!

Kurisumasu no aisatsu (Christmas greetings) Yes, it's that time of the year where we celebrate with family and friends for
fun and festivities. Hope you signed up for our Christmas Luncheon to be held on Wed., Dec. 16 at the Japanese Chamber of Commerce. If we don't see you there, have a magical holiday season!
In November, we had a full month of activities. On Nov. 2, we learned a lot about spinal cord injury from Mari Nakamura of the Neurotrama Registry. On the 9th, Dana Teramoto from Walkwise kupuna, together with Officers Walter Espiritu and Ross Malloy, explained the do's and don'ts of pedestrian safety. On the l6th we celebrated birthdays and enjoyed
the music and songs of the Happy Senior Seranaders by Moana Gray. And of course the musical extravaganza by Frank
Toma and company kept our feet tapping and hands clapping.
December is for enjoying festivities with family so we will end our JCC festivities on Dec. 7 with Birthday celebrations
especially for George Nakamura celebrating 90 years young. We will be entertained by Ellen's Ukulele and Victor Tangonan.

November was an eventful month. LMPSC Veterans were recognized and honored during a special program. (Real
Chicken Skin!) A Thanksgiving luncheon sponsored by Meals on Wheels was yummy for all who attended. December
will host LMPSC Christmas Celebration. (For tickets, inquire at the center by Dec. 4th) PCC Meetings will continue
throughout December and conclude 2015 on the 30th at Royal Palace (Stadium Mall).

Aloha Kakou,
November 24th was fun day with Bingo. Garriss Akiona shared researches about widespread elder abuse. Evidences
show that one in ten older adults suffers from elder abuse, but only one in 25 cases is actually reported. Know where to
ask for help if they are being abused.

Humana agents Sani and Willis thoroughly explained coverage and got undivided attention from members on November
7th. They also gave members bags of pens. On November 21st celebrants celebrated a pre-thanksgiving feast with music
and lots of dancing.

November (Shimuchichi) was a short (inchaa) one for us. Members met only twice (takeen) but made the most of it. On
the 12th, members got competitive as games of bingo were played. There were shouts of “shake the box” when their
numbers were not called. Those who got “bingo” were awarded prizes.
On the 19th, Hui O Laulima’s Churakagi Angwata (beautiful young women) put on an awesome performance. While not
young, they showed much enthusiasm with their varied dances. They also got the members to join in with karaoke singing. Thank-you also to Dazzman Toguchi as he “dazzled” us with his dances.
Because of generous donations from our members throughout the year, the club was able to have Thanksgiving for
those in attendance. We were treated to a mini bento along with pumpkin pie. Delicious (Maasan)!
As the end of the year (Tushi) approaches, we will again meet only twice in December (Shiwa`ashi). On the 3rd, we will
be entertained by the Shiyu Kai dancers led by Sensei Yamaguchi along with their singers. Our final meeting of the year
will be on the 10th. We’ll be celebrating the December birthday babies with a variety show put on by our members.
Stay healthy (ganjuumun) and see you in the New Year!
“Ashibi nu churu sa ya, ninju nu sunawai” (The more participants there are, the more enjoyable a gathering becomes).

Flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and

Lanakila hosted two awesome events in November. The University of Hawaii Nurses Fair on November 5 was fantastic.
The UH Nursing School’s faculties, nurse students, and Project
Vision Hawaii provided the seniors with fun and educational
activities about health, stress management, and nutrition, etc.
On November 10, Lanakila held its first Veteran’s Day Honorary Celebration. Forty-four members of Lanakila who served
in the Armed Forces participated in the event with their family
and friends. Special guests included: Ms. Barbara Yamashita,
Deputy Director of the Department of Community Services,
Mr. Gil Tam, President of Ke`ehi Memorial Organization, and
Ms. Stella Wong, Vice President of Programs of Catholic
Charities Hawaii. Everyone enjoyed the live music played by
Hawaii Army National Guard 111th Army Band. Each senior
veteran also received a certificate from Congressman Mark
Takai’s office and a special gift from Lanakila.
