Pastor’s Ponderings:
After our worship on Reformation Sunday, several of you asked for me to print the quote of the
church we can re-form into being, that I used in concluding the sermon. The vision for this
comes from Philip Gulley’s book, If the Church Were Christian, Rediscovering the Values of
Jesus. In a book I read this summer, The Underground Church by Robin Myers, a UCC pastor
at the Mayflower Congregational Church in Oklahoma City, OK, Myers had the wonderful idea of
stringing together the chapter titles of Gulley’s book into a vision of the church for the future.
“If the church were Christian, Jesus would be a model for living, rather than an object of our
worship; affirming our potential would be more important than condemning our brokenness;
reconciliation would be more valued than judgment; gracious behavior would be more
important than right belief; inviting questions would be valued more than supplying answers;
encouraging personal exploration would be more important than communal uniformity; meeting
needs would be more important than maintaining institutions; peace would be more important
than power; we would care more about love and less about sex and this life would be more
important than the afterlife.” (Philip Gulley, If the Church Were Christian, Rediscovering the
Values of Jesus) With God’s help and Christ’s leading, may it be so.

A Warm Welcome to our New Spring Glen Church Members:
Royse Burlingame
Royse Burlingame is a former professional ballet dancer and occasionally
works at the Richard Penna Salon doing permanent cosmetics. She is
currently enrolled in a two year nursing program to become an RN. When
she’s not busy studying, she spends every minute she can with her husband
and 2 month old daughter.
Troy Maiocco
Troy Maiocco is happily married to her husband Richard and is the proud mother of three: Kevin,
Brett, and Royse. She is grandmother to twin grandsons, Ronin and Phoenix, and a granddaughter,
Braelyn . She is a cancer survivor and enjoys working part time at the Richard Penna Salon. For fun
she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, and walking her dogs.
Skip & Amy Masback
Amy and Skip Masback are joining the church by letter of transfer
from the Congregational Church of New Canaan. Skip was a youth
minister and senior minister in New Canaan from 1994-2013. Amy
served the congregation in many capacities, including singing in
the choir, leading Women’s Fellowship, teaching Sunday School,
and helping to found and lead the “OG”, the adult mission team.
Amy and Skip met while studying in France, and they married
after Skip finished law school and as Amy was finishing nursing school. They moved with their family
to Spring Glen in 1991 when Skip entered Yale Divinity School, even worshipping for a time at Spring
Glen Church. After Skip retired from the ministry in New Canaan last year, Amy and Skip returned to
Spring Glen. Amy continues her work as a nurse. Skip manages an academic center and a youth
ministry initiative at Yale Divinity School. They have three children, Owen (34), Katy (32) and Libby
(26), and one grandson, Ulysses. They enjoy gardening, sailing, and playing golf (badly).

Terreal Rogers
My family and I moved to Hamden CT in 2010, from Salt Lake City, UT,
for my husband's residency training as an ER doctor at Yale-New Haven
Hospital. We have two children Elliot (4) and Addie (2). I'm currently a
stay at home mom, but have worked as an RN in the past. In our spare
time we like to travel and enjoy the outdoors via hiking and biking. I was
raised Lutheran, but am now looking forward to becoming part of the
United Church of Christ at Spring Glen Church.
Kevin Basmadjian
Kevin was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where his
parents and three siblings and their families all still live. He
began his career as a high school English teacher, and later met
his wife, Emily Smith, in graduate school while pursuing his
doctorate in education. He currently serves as dean of the
School of Education at Quinnipiac University, and in his spare
time enjoys playing golf, coaching baseball and soccer, and
spending time with his family and friends in the community. He
lives in North Haven with Emily and their two children, Christian
and Carly.
Emily R. Smith
Emily R. Smith, wife of Kevin Basmadjian, and mother of Christian Basmadjian (9) and Carly
Basmadjian (7), is an Associate Professor of English Education at Fairfield University. Originally from
Philadelphia, Emily is a birthright Quaker who spent four years teaching English at a Quaker/Friends
school in Philadelphia. When not teaching, Emily enjoys enjoying her second childhood with her
children, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with good friends.
Halloween Party
Happy Halloween – Continuing a youth group tradition, youth group members Lee Barrett, Katie
Laster, and Jackson Roman, with the assistance of Mark and Tara Barrett, Pastor David, Amy Lynn,
and Justin, Gregory, Abby, and Laurie Bleickardt, hosted a Halloween party for our Sunday school
children on Sunday afternoon. There were 20 children dressed as princesses, Cleopatra, aliens,
Winnie the Pooh, a marathon runner, butterfly, baseball player, video game characters, King Arthur,
Woody from Toy Story, to name a few. They enjoyed face-painting, games, Halloween crafts
(pumpkin-painting, skeletons, owls, bats, cookie-decorating), snacks, and spooky music. Thank you,
youth and adult volunteers, for your many gifts!
Have you read the latest enews from SGC?
We recently changed the way we send weekly updates and news from SGC to our members and
friends, using an internet service called MailChimp. We hope you like the new look! This service
should also help make our messages be treated less like spam by your email service. Rest assured,
we are not selling or sharing our emails with anyone else, and all correspondence is from and to our
SGC office and staff. We do have the ability to do some customization of who gets what messages,
including ensuring notification of important messages for members specifically. If you have not been
receiving our emails, or you have questions or want to change the frequency of your emails, please
email Julia at [email protected]. We welcome feedback and thoughts on how we might continue to
improve our church communications.

Looking Forward: Women's Retreat
The Women’s retreat is scheduled for March 13-15, 2015 at the
Incarnation Center in Deep River. We will be in the same
accommodations, the Brooks Cottage, a warm and inviting setting, with
delicious meals and time to roam the woods, and be together in prayer
and song and silence. And a chance to get to know one another, relax
and enjoy each other's company.
It may seem way too early to be thinking about those days in faraway
March, but in the past few years it has worked well to get a theme and a direction for the retreat
before the new year. That allows enough time for ideas to percolate and for us to test out different
plans with plenty of time to spare.
There will be a brief meeting on Wednesday, November 19 at 6:30 in the Fellowship Room to begin
this planning and to discuss alternatives. Since the leadership rotates and changes each year, please
feel free to come to the meeting even if –especially if—you have not participated in prior years. It is a
rewarding commitment. No need to RSVP for the meeting, but if you want to participate in planning
but this meeting date doesn’t work for you, please let me know of your interest.
We might consider inviting a retreat leader from outside the church if the theme merits such a
person. This would lighten the load on the Leadership Team, before and during the weekend. All
options are open to make this an enjoyable and enriching experience.
Looking forward to beginning the planning process, and to our retreat.
Peace,
Pastor Clare
Nurturing our Church Home:
Stewardship Season through November 16
On October 12 we kicked off our stewardship season with an
inspiring "Stewardship Moment" by Kathy Kew Lee. This year's
theme--Nurturing our Church Home--invites each of us to reflect on
how Spring Glen Church serves as a second home for the many who
worship at SGC and participate in our activities. Over the next several
weeks, three more members of our congregation will share their
personal reflections on what SGC has meant to them and their
families and on how they will help nurture that home, by sharing their time and talents as well as
making a financial commitment to the stewardship campaign. As you hear their testimony and
consider your own commitment, we ask you to prayerfully reflect on what Spring Glen Church means
to you and your family. Consider the ways in which you feel “at home” here, and how you have been
nurtured. We hope you will feel called to pledge generously and sacrificially, increasing your pledge if
possible. Pledge information will be sent to all homes and will also be available in the church office.
Pledge cards will be received during worship on November 16. Questions or discussion welcomed by
members of the Stewardship Committee: Ray Andrewsen, Doug Hawthorne, Nick Healy, Jennifer
Heath, Debby Jagielow, and Ellen Schowalter

Sunday School News
The Sunday School children invite you to attend the Sunday School Marketplace following
worship on November 2. Each Sunday School class will be selling items that they have made in class.
The pre-K/K class will sell painted votive candle holders. The first and second grade class table will
feature wooden magnets. For an autumnal treat, buy a caramel apple made by the 3/4 grade class.
The 5/6 class will sell birdseed ornaments to adorn not only your Christmas tree, but also to feed the
birds after the Christmas season. All of our sales will support the charity Water for South Sudan. We
will also be collecting donations during Fellowship Hour for this cause. Please plan on staying after
worship and supporting our children’s efforts.
Our October Chapel lesson examined intentional giving to support our church with our offerings of
time, talent and treasure. Each child received offering envelopes to take home and use on Sunday
mornings. The Sunday School collects offering each week. Using the stewardship theme “Nurturing
our Church Home,” the children came up with ideas on how we can nurture Spring Glen Church.
Some of their ideas included pledging money so the church can pay its bills, joining the Soul Singers
to share one’s talents, donating food to the Food Bank collection and praying for the church. If your
child did not receive offering envelopes, you may take some from the basket in the Sunday School
hallway.
We are making plans for the Advent Festival coming up on December 7. Please plan on joining us at
3:30 pm to work on crafts together, followed by a pick-up pageant at 5 and a potluck supper at 6.
Help Needed in the Toddler Room
We are seeking some help in the Toddler Room on Sunday mornings. We employ a Toddler Room
teacher, but would like her to have an assistant on every Sunday. Parents of toddlers benefit greatly
from being able to leave their children in good hands and attend worship. Even if you are willing to
help with only one or two Sundays, we would appreciate it. Please contact Laurie Bleickardt at
[email protected] or 203 287-9246 for more information.
Pre-K/K Sunday School Teacher Needed
We are currently recruiting a Pre-K/K teacher for the winter church school term which begins on
December 14. The teacher will be asked to teach on December 14 and 21, January 11, 18, 25 and
February 8, 15 and 22. This is a fun group of children bursting with questions and curiosity. If you
can’t commit to teach for the entire session, please consider being a substitute. Please contact
Laurie Bleickardt if you would like to volunteer or have any questions at [email protected] or
203 287-9246.
~Laurie Bleickardt
Seeking Choir Members
The choir is looking for new singers! We have a particular need for male voices at
this time, but all singers are welcome to join. No audition and no experience
required. Rehearsals are Wednesday evening from 7:30-9PM and Sunday morning
at 9:15AM. Regular attendance is encouraged but not required. If you have any
questions, please contact Amanda Cecala at [email protected].

All-Church Clean-up/Fix-up Day
House Committee Clean-up Day was a big success! Thanks to a good turn-out and
some hard workers, we got lots of windows washed, doors weather-stripped, storage
areas cleared out and organized, surfaces cleaned, light ballasts fixed, door handles
tightened, basement windows checked and sealed, baseboard molding glued, some
walls cleaned and painted, outside hoses put away and Memorial Garden fountain
winterized. The fun continues next week when Ron Offutt leads the Boy Scout work day projects for
the church, and when Jean Davis, Barbara Hobbs, and Jean Sanderson work their fall magic in the
Memorial Garden. You may also notice that the carpet in Noah's chapel has been cleaned and the
upstairs floors have been stripped and re-finished (by a contractor). Many thanks to many
volunteers: Betsy Barker, Carolyn Cary, Kathy Kew Lee, Amy Lynn, Kurt, Jane and Eric Jagielow,
Roger Johnson, Larry Logan, and Ron Offutt. Good work by my fellow House Committee members:
Carl Backus, Tom Barker, Dave Giblin, and Phil Notaro.

State UCC Annual Meeting
The Connecticut Conference of the UCC held its 147th Annual Meeting the weekend of October 17
and 18 at Cheshire High School. There was an impressive turnout, maybe 400 people by my informal
estimate. I attended the Friday business meeting as a SGC delegate. Pastor Clare Robert went on
Saturday, and reported that she had felt renewed and invigorated by the number and strength of
congregations active at the meeting. Sarah Libby was present throughout, as SGC delegate and
official state Scribe.
Among the speakers, Conference Minister Kent Saladi gave an excellent talk on expanding the
interdependence of and cooperation between our state's congregations. (The theme of the
conference, appropriately, was "Can't Make it Without You.") Mary Luti, the "theological reflector,"
presented thoughtful, provocative, and humorous commentaries at the end of each session. In
addition, we were joined by esteemed colleagues from South Korea who joined us in celebrating the
20th Anniversary of our Korean Partnership. The Connecticut Conference maintains a vital and
exciting ecumenical partnership with the Kyung-Ki Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in South
Korea.
Two resolutions were presented at the business meeting, and both were passed by comfortable
margins. The first was presented by Steve Jungkeit of Old Lyme Congregational Church. It is a
resolution of implementation regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The second, presented by
Marilyn Kendrix of the Church of the Redeemer, is a resolution of implementation to end mass
incarceration for non-violent offenses. The full text of both resolutions can be found at the UCC CT
Conference website: http://www.ctucc.org/news/AnnlMtg14/ I recommend that we all take a look at
these two important church initiatives. This was the first annual meeting I have attended, and I left
impressed by the commitment and diversity of the UCC congregations in our state. May they continue
another 147 years.
~Richard Davis Co-chair, Delegates Committee
Highlights and a recording of the Conference Minister's address can be found at ctucc.org.

Update from the Senior Pastor Search Committee
What a wonderful gathering was had on Sunday October 19th! The Search Committee would like to
extend our appreciation to all who were able to join us for a lively discussion about what we are
passionate about, and the future we envision for Spring Glen Church. The ideas were rich, the
conversation engaging and the company exceptional! Special thanks to Katharine Healy, Debby
Jagielow, the Carpenters, the Johnsons, and everyone else who helped put out a delicious spread to
feed our brains and fuel the conversation.
Between the gatherings this week, the conversations we have had with many of the church
committees and the survey responses (thank you again to the over 100 of you who took the time to
share your thoughts), we have a lot of information to process! Over the next several weeks, we will
use this information to build an accurate church profile, which will give potential candidates a glimpse
of who we are and what we hope to become together. We are confident it will attract some
spectacular candidates for us to consider!
While the ideas shared have been as diverse and numerous as our church members, we are seeing
some very clear themes and priorities emerge for Spring Glen Church. We look forward to sharing
our church profile with the congregation when it is complete. So sit back and relax – know that while
we may fall silent for a time, the wheels of progress are turning, and God’s work is being done!
With deep gratitude and thanks,
Janice Ammons, Nick Appleby, Michele Backus, Nancy Beals, Rick Brownell (Chair), Jennifer Heath,
Laurel Laster, Mike Palmieri

Abraham’s Tent Overflow Shelter--Opportunity for Service
Spring Glen Church is one of many churches throughout the New Haven area participating this winter
to provide overnight shelter for 12 male clients from Columbus House. Spring Glen Church has
chosen the week of January 19 to January 25 to host these men in our Great Hall. Volunteers are
needed for the following: to provide, serve, and share meals with guests; to share after-dinner
activities, i.e. games, movies, and conversation; and to stay overnight. Look for sign-up sheets in
November.

New Haven Home Recovery and Life Haven is now New Reach
With the holidays approaching, New Reach has kicked off its Adopt-A-Family Program. Adopt-A-Family
provides holiday gifts for more than 200 families every year. If you are interested in helping us make the
holidays brighter for our families, please contact Mary Grande at 203-492-4866 ext. 36 or
[email protected].
Read on to learn about how New Reach is making an impact in the community:
Brendalina and her 16-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son arrived in Connecticut with nothing but the
clothing they were wearing. Brendalina and her two kids traveled to Connecticut from Atlanta after family
offered them a place to live. What Brendalina did not plan for was a home with unsafe living conditions for
her children. While she had spent her savings on moving to CT and rent, Brendalina knew she had to do what
was best for her kids. Brendalina and her young children became homeless.
Brendalina and her children sought help and shelter at Martha’s Place. The family resided at Martha’s Place for
approximately two months. The beginning was a struggle; Brendalina was looking for employment and her
children were adjusting in their new schools. With the help of the staff at Martha’s Place, along with
persistence and motivation, Brendalina was able to obtain employment at a coffee shop. She was able to save
money enough to pay for rent for an apartment through Connecticut’s Rapid Re-Housing Program.
Connecticut’s Rapid Re-Housing identifies permanent housing and provides financial assistance for individuals
and families who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. Through this program, Brendalina’s family obtained
a security deposit and two months of rent. These supports assisted her and her family to become more
independent and begin settling into their new life.
Brendalina and her children are doing well and are happy to have a place to call home. Brendalina was
grateful for the services New Reach was able to provide. She shared, “I felt safe with my children in the
shelter and now I am able to provide them with the living space they deserve.”

 Overall income is right on target, and pledge income is just above the budgeted
amount.
 Overall expenses are slightly under where they should be at this time of year.
 Our endowment funds enjoyed a good month, and our combined balances in these two funds
are just under $900,000.

the same love & compassion for our shelter that you have that keep us going.”
We typically serve on the 4th Thursday of each month, but another group has the tradition of serving
on Thanksgiving, so we will not be serving in November. Our next opportunity to serve may be on
