Moreland Ridge Middle School Huskies
October 2014
School Year 2014-2015 , Issue 1
FROM MR. GROVER’S DESK
...
MRMS Family,
With 918 students and four new staff
members, the start of the 2014-2015 school
year is off to a fantastic start. For many of our
parents, middle school is just as new and
exciting as it is to their student. Over the
three years of middle school you will be
amazed at the growth and development of
your child. An important part of this growth is
facilitated by involvement in different school
activities and clubs, such as intramurals, yearbook, Husky Vision, Ridge Readers, Honor
Choir, student council, fall play and science
club among others. Currently, over 400
students are involved in these opportunities
and I encourage you to promote participation
in extracurricular events. You may view the
list on the schools website via www.bssd.net.
Another exciting opportunity the district is
offering for students is our new Coder Dojo.
Coder Dojo is a coding club for area young
people aged 4-17. The Dojo will be led by district and community volunteers with a passion
for computer programming and computer
technology. The Coder Dojo movement emphasizes self-motivated learning through project work, peer-to-peer mentoring and creation of innovative projects. Look on our website for a flyer for meeting dates and additional information.

FROM MR. GROVER’S DESK (CONTINUED)
Communication is another important component to fostering the growth of
your adolescent. PowerSchool Parent Portal, an online program, allows you to
monitor your student’s grades and attendance. By now each of you should have
received a letter providing your ID and password to access your secondary
student’s information. If you have not, please contact the office at 224-1800.
The grade card you received today is a “progress report.” These come out every
six weeks and provide both parents and students with a report of academic
progress. Grades are figured on a cumulative basis, or “running total.” The
grade cards issued in January and May are semester grades which are used in
figuring Honor Roll, GPA and are the grades recorded on the student’s
permanent school record. Another opportunity for communication is at Student
-Led Conferences. Conference days are coming up on Wednesday, October 29
and Thursday, October 30. Look for more information to be sent home as
these dates approach.
This is a good time to remind you and your student about the medication policy.
Over the counter medication needs to be in the original container with one day’s
supply and a current note written by the parent/guardian which gives
permission for the student to take the specific medication according to the
recommended dosage stated on the bottle. For any prescription medication, be
advised that no medication will be administered in the clinic without a
physician’s order. Prescription bottles must be current, appropriately labeled,
and delivered to the school clinic by a parent/guardian or designated adult.
Another issue to remind you about as the illness season comes upon us is that
students will be excluded from school when they have a fever of 100 degrees or
greater and may only return when fever free without the use of medication for
24 hours. This policy applies to vomiting and diarrhea, as well.
I would like to thank our fantastic PTSA for all they have done for our students
throughout the years. Most recently PTSA organized our first ever Special
Friends Day that was held this morning and just last week held our first Friday
Fun Night of the school year. Both events were successes and directly involved
our students.
On behalf of the entire Moreland Ridge Middle School staff, I thank you for
allowing us the privilege of working with your students. Feel free to contact any
of us as the need arises. Best wishes to you for an enjoyable and knowledgeable
school year.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PTSA PRESIDENT
EVENTS AROUND
TOWN
KRISTI WHITE
Dear Husky Families,
Welcome back! As this is
our first Husky Report of the
school year, please allow me
to introduce myself … I am
Kristi White and I am
excited to be serving my
second year as your PTSA
President. I have been on
the MRMS PTSA Board for
the last 6 years as Treasurer,
Salute the Schools Chair and
Hospitality assistant. My
two daughters have gone
through all of their years at
MRMS and now my youngest is a 7th grader, so I have a
few more years around
Moreland Ridge!
The year started out with an
overwhelming response of
volunteers and all our PTSA
Board positions are now
filled. We have also established an e-mail distribution
list for parents who would
like to be contacted about
donating items or their time
for activities and events. If
you did not sign up to be
included in this distribution,
please send me an e-mail at
[email protected].
We realize everyone is very
busy today with work,
church, children activities,
etc., so I would like to thank
each of you in advance for
your time and donations. To
be successful, it doesn’t just
take one of us…it requires
all of us working together!

We hope at least one
member in every family will
join PTSA this year. As
PTSA does not have any
“fundraisers”, we rely on
memberships and other
PTSA events to help us raise
funds to help us support our
students and school. In fact,
PTSA was able to donate
money to assist with the purchase of the new sound system in the cafeteria, as well
as some new microphones
for school productions and
concerts. We would like to
continue doing great things
for our school, so please
consider joining PTSA!
Again this year, PTSA is
offering concessions at all
our home sporting
games...you may have
already taken advantage of
this at football, volleyball or
cross country. We just have
a couple of home events
remaining but will return
during the basketball season.
We held our first Friday Fun
Night of the year on Friday,
September 26th and as
always, it was an
overwhelming success.
Thanks to all of the parents
who volunteered time to
help supervise that night…it
is always our biggest of the
year and we are happy for all
of the extra hands on deck
for it!
If I can ever be of
assistance, please don’t
hesitate to contact me. My
sincere wishes for a
successful and enjoyable
middle school year!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE
INCLUDED ON THE E-MAIL
DISTRIBUTION FOR PTSA DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS? Don’t worry,
this
doesn’t commit you to being on our PTSA
Board! It simply means that you will be included in future
emails that are sent out when donations are needed for various activities (Salute to School, Teacher luncheons, etc.), or
volunteers are needed for events such as Friday Fun Night.
We always like to add new emails to our list and it’s never too
late to sign-up! Contact Kristi White and provide her with your
name and email address.

REFLECTIONS
Students…Discover your world and explore new
cultures or your own through dance, film, literature, music, photography or visual arts. No experience is required to participate in Reflections!
Choose the arts category you’re interested in, create an original piece of artwork based on the
theme: “The world would be a better place
if…” and be recognized as an artist in your community.
The National PTA Reflections program is PTA’s
cornerstone arts program. It offers students the
opportunity to earn local, state, and even national
recognition for original artwork they create in response to a specific theme.
Students may pick up an information packet from
any MRMS teacher or at the front office. This information will also be posted on the school website
at www.bssd.net under the MRMS link.
The deadline for submitting entries for our MRMS
Reflections contest is Wednesday, November 5,
2014. All students submitting an entry will have
their names placed into a drawing for a chance to
win a $25 gift card! Winning entries for MRMS
will be announced in early December and will progress to the State competition.
The categories are:
*Dance Choreography
*Film Production
*Literature
*Music Composition
*Photography
an entry inside
or outside of
the school. A
student may
submit entries
in more than
one arts category. Each
student entry
must be accompanied by
a paper student entry
form
(included in
the information packet), signed by
a parent or guardian. Student entries must include a title and an artist statement, which communicates the artist’s inspiration for the work and
how it relates to the theme.
MRMS students may enter in the Middle School
Division or the Special Artist Division. The Special
Artist Division is an optional division of the Reflections Program, accepting students in all grades,
for students whose physical, cognitive or mental
health challenges meet guidelines set forth in the
Americans with Disabilities Act.
If you have any questions, please contact our
MRMS PTSA Reflections Chairperson, Carla
Girkin, at [email protected] or
816-550-0892.
We look forward to receiving your entries!
*Visual Arts
Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme
may be submitted. Each entry must be the original
work of one student only. A student may develop
