VANTAGE
Pastor’s Page
National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is a national observance held
every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and
mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use
disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.
There are millions of Americans whose lives have been transformed through
recovery. Since these successes often go unnoticed by the broader population,
Recovery Month provides a vehicle for everyone to celebrate these
accomplishments.
Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery, just as we celebrate health
improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension,
diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. The observance reinforces the positive message that
behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and
people can and do recover.
Over the years, National Recovery Month has inspired millions of people to raise awareness about
mental and/or substance use disorders, share their stories of recovery, and encourage others who
are still in need of services and support.
Recovery Month began in 1989 as Treatment Works! Month, which honored the work of substance
use treatment professionals in the field. The observance evolved into National Alcohol and Drug
Addiction Recovery Month in 1998, when it expanded to include celebrating the accomplishment of
individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. The observance evolved once again in 2011 to
National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) to include all aspects of behavioral health.
Now in its 27th year, Recovery Month highlights the achievements of individuals who have
reclaimed their lives in long-term recovery and honors the treatment and recovery service
providers who make recovery possible.
Recovery Month also promotes the message that recovery in all of its forms is possible and
encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective
prevention, treatment, and recovery services for those in need.

For people attempting to recover, their success can be a matter of life and death. For the loved
ones of such a struggling person, their recovery is the difference between hope and heartbreak.
Boca Raton and Delray Beach are two of the most utilized cities by people trying to recover. Our
church alone hosts five meetings a week of Alcoholics Anonymous. But there are many more
groups who use the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous as their resource. These programs
include Overeaters Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Online Gamers
Anonymous, Clutterers Anonymous, and more.
On Sunday, September 11, I will speak about recovery in my message “Ripe for Recovery,”
recovery’s importance to those who struggle with addiction(s), honor those who know the
heartbreak and pain of a loved one in recovery, and celebrate those who have taken their lives
from the brink and brought it to abundance.

Philippians 4:6-9
Of course this is a parody on the spiritual song that many of you know, “Jesus,
Precious Jesus.” Pressure in Jesus' life came from two sources. He had terrible
pressure from colliding with Roman and Jewish authorities. But a second source
of pressure for Jesus came from his popularity among people. It was hard at
times to say no to those who needed him so badly. Jesus was in constant
demand. He had to get away in order to catch his breath. Many people know
about such pressure today. Let’s help you get relief from the pressure you feel.
September is National Recovery Month. We are talking about people who are in
twelve step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and
many others. They want to recover from their past and their present, and build a
better today and tomorrow. Many do, but many find it so difficult that they
never accomplish sobriety by stopping the insanity of their actions. But many
more people could learn from the twelve steps, and how to make their lives
much better by putting into action much of what is taught in Anonymous or
fellowship groups. I hope you come out to support those in recovery who may be
our church fellow members and friends, and support those among us who have
loved ones who struggle with addiction.
How wonderful it would be to know God’s will—and then of course to follow it.
We all seek guidance at times. Sometimes we need it daily, hourly, if not more.
Other times we look to God to guide us on big decisions. Gideon decided to ask
God to show him a sign before he went off and fought Israel’s enemies. He put
down a fleece and told God he needed one side dry and the ground wet with
dew, and then had the audacity to tell God to do it the other way the next day.
He got away with it, too. Let’s see if we can come up with some ways to discern
God’s will in our lives.
Undoing the Anxiety Overload
Anxiety is a huge problem today. Its force is massive and negative in our lives.
But if you think anxiety is a problem of today’s world, you would be incorrect.
It’s been around a long time. Paul talks about anxiety. Christ talks about it.
Anxiety, panic, worry are emotions that we most often initiate. We self-induce
anxiety. We do it so often we don’t even know it’s happening. However, because
we are the ones who bring it on, we are the ones who can turn it off. Hear how
you can start a new life free from anxiety and worry.

Antique Roadshow
The Adult Fellowship is
looking into the possibility of
inviting Antique Roadshow to
Boca Raton. Our VicePresident, Grayce Esposito,
has been in contact with
representatives of Antique Roadshow and has
learned of the requirements for a visit from
them.
They want at least 25-30 people present for
their program. Also, they want the people
attending to bring items of value for appraisal.
They are not willing to arrange a program if
the items presented to them are of
insignificant value.
If anyone in our group is interested in having
Antique Roadshow come to us and has an item
of some value to be appraised, please contact
Grayce. You might also talk with your friends
and neighbors to see if there is interest. We
would schedule such a program for a Saturday
and would welcome anyone from the
community who has a valuable item and
wishes to have it appraised.
The representative that Grayce talked to
spoke specifically about estate sale items such
as jewelry of value, Chinese pieces, etc.
Grayce’s phone number is 561-395-4976.

Boca Helping Hands Volunteer Days
1st Saturday of each month, 8:30 am-10:30 am
The following was received from
Bill Harper, Director of Food and
Warehouse Operations for Boca
Helping Hands:
“The reason I am reaching out to you is that
we are in desperate need of groups to help get
us through the summer months at this most
important distribution site. I am looking for
8-10 hard-working volunteers to help out on
Saturday mornings from 8:30 — 10:30 a.m. to
help unload the truck, set-up tents, tables,
chairs, etc., then prepare pantry, meat and
produce bags for distribution. Volunteers also
help clients to their cars, when necessary.
When pantry closes, volunteers pack up the
truck with tents, tables, chairs, and garbage/
cardboard, and police the parking lot for
debris. Most Saturdays they are done by 11
a.m. I just want to make sure everyone is
available until Noon in case it runs late.
I appreciate your help with this and look
forward to hearing from you soon.”
West Boca Food Distribution Center is hosted
at Boca Glades Baptist Church (441 and Judge
Winikoff Road), in the East parking lot. Age
limits are listed on their web site. A
completed application and a signed Liability
Waiver can be done online or downloaded
from the website—bocahelpinghands.org. You
can read more about the WEST BOCA jobs
under the BHH volunteer descriptions. There
are also two brief information YouTube videos
there when you go to the VOLUNTEER red tab
on the page.
You are welcome any Saturday to help;
however, we are focused on the first Saturday
of every month in order to have a Church on
the Hill group there, and enjoy fellowship
together. Sign ups are encouraged, but you
can just “show up!” We hope you will enjoy
helping our neighbors in need! Contact Sarah
Hugus for questions at 561-338-4207 or
[email protected]
School Supply Drive
Support the education of some of
the neediest students in our
community! Bring in one or a few
of the items below to be donated
to the students at Boca Elementary School:
Backpacks
Composition books
Loose leaf paper
No.2 Pencils
Colored pencils
Washable markers
Bottled glue
Erasers
Spiral Notebooks
Folders
Three ring binders
Highlighters
Crayons
Glue sticks
Pencil sharpeners
Monetary donations are also welcomed by the
school. One year, for example, the church was
able to donate an electric pencil sharpener
and copy paper at the school’s request. Our
help is always met with much appreciation by
the staff at Boca Elementary!
Wrapped in Love Crafters Group Sept. 23
The knitting/crochet crafting group
will meet on Friday, September 23
from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. for a joyful
hour of crafts.
Last year we were able to help
local neonatal centers by making preemie
blankets and hats. This year we are working
on projects for cancer survivors. We will be
making Knitted Knockers (knitted lightweight
cotton prosthetics for mastectomy patients);
soft knitted washcloths for chemo patients;
and chemo hats for children and adults. You
can also choose to come for the fellowship
while working on your own project!
If you’ve always wanted to learn to crochet,
this is the perfect time. September’s session
will be dedicated to learning how to crochet a
lacy chemo cap.
There is a sign up sheet in the Rosser room, or
for more information contact Sandi in the
church office. If you aren’t able to attend the
meeting but would like to help, please contact
Sandi for details, patterns and/or supplies.

Flood Relief
Parts of Louisiana received 30
inches of rain within three days
in August, leaving 20 parishes in
a state of emergency and
stranding nearly 30,000 people.
In all, over 12,000 needed to
seek refuge in shelters, nearly a
dozen died, and an estimated
40,000 homes have been
damaged or destroyed in the
Baton Rouge and Lafayette
areas. UCC Disaster Ministries has been in
contact with the South Central Conference of
the UCC and has confirmed that no UCC
congregations have been directly impacted.
However, the pastor of Little Farms UCC
Church in New Orleans is in direct contact
with a Baton Rouge church. The New Orleans
church reports that in the congregation of
First Christian Church of Baton Rouge there
are 27 families who are currently gutting their
homes with the help of work crews from the
church. These families are also in need of
money. In addition, the church is setting up to
house Red Cross volunteers in its Fellowship
Hall.
If you are able to assist the Baton Rouge
church and its work, please make checks
payable to First Christian Church Baton Rouge/
flood relief. These checks can be placed in the
offering plates or sent to Church on the Hill by
September 10th.
Additionally, the UCC's Volunteer in Disaster
Recovery Support is desperately seeking
volunteers in September and October to
complete the task of rebuilding homes in
South Carolina. The homes were damaged by
heavy rains last October. Perhaps YOU would
like to be a volunteer for a week. Housing is
provided at a local church. For further
information, go to: UCC Disaster Recovery
Support Initiative. Scroll down to Disaster
volunteers urgently needed for South Carolina.
Sue Sullivan has participated on six disaster
response teams and would be happy to talk to
you about the incredibly fulfilling experience.
Speaker for Family Promise coming soon.
In the near future (date TBA)
the Executive Director or her
designee will address the
congregation on a Sunday
morning about a program for families in a
homeless situation. Family Promise of South
Palm Beach County is an interfaith
organization that depends on 1200 volunteers
annually to accomplish its local objectives
which include:
1. temporary shelter for up to 4 families
2. daily meals and snacks
3. access to transportation
4. financial management training
5. family counseling
6. educational scholarships
7. formal long-term mentoring
This program operates 365 days per year.
Your Vision Ministry voted to support the idea
of our congregation becoming more involved
through this organization by “...being God’s
light in the world with our actions…” On the
day of the presentation, you will have the
opportunity to complete a survey so that your
church leaders can determine the level of
congregational interest and what support we
can offer to Family Promise.
For new volunteers both online training as
well as group sensitivity sessions are offered.
Those from our congregation who have
assisted over several years as individual
volunteers include Sandi Kilbride, Sarah
Hugus, Judy and Larry Williams, Bobbie
Stetson, Diana Willard, Lori Swett, Roberta
Fowler, all of whom can talk with you more
about how they helped. Watch for more
information.
Boca Helping Hands Donations
Over the past 10 months, your thoughtful
food contributions for Boca Helping Hands
have totaled at least 241 pounds!
Keep up the good work.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Adult Fellowship
We are getting close to the start of the 2016-2017 season of
Adult Fellowship. This year we will begin with a program on
September 7th. Our speaker will be Harriet Diamond of The
League of Women Voters. We say thank you to Sarah Hugus for
arranging this program.
Larry and Judy Williams will be preparing the lunch. They have
planned a menu consisting of Chicken Noodle Casserole, garden
salad, corn bread and dessert. As always, we will ask for a
donation of $5.00 for the noon meal.
For our October 5th meeting we will present a program on Tai
Chi. Since Grayce and I moved to Boca Verde East we have
joined a small group that does Tai Chi every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Our leader,
Warren (Chuck) Stark has agreed to bring the group to our Adult Fellowship October meeting. Chuck
leads us in a series of warm-up movements, and then we do the graceful tai chi movements to a
video. Even if you have not been exercising regularly, come and join us and just do as much as you
are comfortable with. These are movements that anyone can do.
November will be another special program honoring Veterans Day. This year we will feature a
speaker on the Honor Flight program. This month we owe our thank you’s to Rev. Vardell Swett who
put us in contact with this speaker. Also, we are asking anyone who has gone on an Honor Flight to
bring their story and pictures. It is a wonderful program. We will take a free will offering which will
be donated to the Honor Flight program. Watch for more news about this organization in future
issues of Vantage.
December will be our annual Christmas program, singing Christmas carols and sharing our favorite
Christmas cookies for dessert. We may even have a presentation on baking and decorating cakes.
This has been Lucille Bruno’s special project. As I write this article for Vantage, our friend and
secretary Lucille has been hospitalized and is now in rehab in Sarasota. She will complete rehab
and spend a few weeks with her daughter, but is hoping to return to her home as soon as she
regains her health. We send our love and prayers to Lucille and look forward to her rejoining our
Lunch Bunch get-togethers, Mahjongg games and participation and leadership in our Adult
Fellowship.
We hope to have a printed program available by the September meeting announcing more details
and programs for the 2016-2017 season.
On March 25th we will again have a Fashion Show fund raiser. SteinMart has agreed to present their
fashions at a Saturday luncheon. We will need about 5 models so please feel free to volunteer, and
please say “yes” if we approach you to help. Thanks to Grayce for doing the research and arranging
this for us.
Also thanks to Grayce, we are hoping to have an Antiques Roadshow at our church. The date will be
announced later. Right now we are looking for people who have articles which they can bring for
appraisal. So far two people have come forward, but we need a few more if Antiques Roadshow is
to do a program for us. We hope you will let Grayce know if you can participate.
As you can tell if you are reading this article, we will have a busy year with programs that should
interest people of all ages and any gender.
www.churchofboca.org Page -8-
We are still carrying on our duties in preparing the punch and cookies for Fellowship Hour following
worship on Sunday mornings. We have lost so many of our past “regulars” that we would certainly
appreciate anyone who would volunteer to help one Sunday a month. To start, we would be happy
to team you up with a regular until you feel comfortable taking over on a Sunday.
And finally, we are also continuing our Comfort Doll project. Eleanor Magee faithfully continues to
head up this wonderful service. She can always use helpers to sew the cloth bodies, stuff them,
knit caps or help sew the costumes. Many children and even older members going through a
stressful illness have seriously appreciated having one of our lovely dolls for comfort. Donations of
time are most important, but financial contributions to help finance the purchase of fabric and
stuffing are also helpful.
Please continue to participate in, and pray for, the Adult Fellowship group of our church.

Church on the Hill Car Magnets
by Sarah Hugus
There were problems with our
first order of magnets. Our
printing company has replaced the
first order with a new model—
slightly larger with improved ink quality.
The printer also gives us this advice:
“Remove the magnet before washing your
vehicle or taking it through a car wash.”
We noted the color was fading quickly and
mildew was forming. Your replacement is
FREE; we ask for a voluntary $5 donation for
your first magnet.
Following church any Sunday, please get your
replacement from me or another volunteer,
such as Andrea or Jen. The first order now will
be given away for use on your refrigerator or
other metal surface!
Vision Ministry encourages all of you to put at
least one marketing magnet on your car to get
out our name and web site for better visibility
in our communities as you drive around.
