The Pentecostal
Hope for the Heathen
\Vhat hope is there for the heathen? If it is true that "he that
believeth not shall be damned" (and it is, according to Christ's own
statement, as recorded in Mark 16 :16) is there any hope for the
heathen to be saved?
Yes, there is hope provided the heathen hear and heed the message
of Him who said. HI am the way, the truth, and the life; no Illall
cometh unto the Father, but hy me" (John 14 :6). For God so
loved the heathen that He gave His only begotten Son, that the
heathen might believe in H im and nOt perish but have everlasting life.
This is the wonderful hope that is held out to all men everywhere.
But what if the heathen never have an opportunity to hear the
gospel?
Will they be eternally damned?
Will their fate be no better
than that of people in Christian lands who have heard the gospel many
times and have rejected it ?
The Bible emphatically teaches that salvation is through the Lord
Jesus Christ and through Him alone; otherwise H e must have died
needlessly. "Neither is there salvation in any other," the apostle said:
"for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby
we must be saved" (Acts 4: 12).
Our heavenly Father loves every human being and He desires everyone to be saved. Howe"er, He sees that the heathen in their present
state are lost sinners and not fit for heaven. That is why Christ
gave His Church the Great Commission. If the heathen were not lost,
why did He tell Hi s follmvers to go into all the world and preach the
gospel to every creature?
The first chapter of Romans explains very clearly the predicament
in which the heathen find themselves and it places the blame where it
belongs--on their own shoulders. It says the Creator's existence is
made known to them by the land, sea , and stars that He created. It
says the knowledge of right and wrong is writtell on every man's
heart when he enters the world. It says the heathen know the judgment of God, and that they who commit vile sins are worthy of death,
yet they not only do the same but take pleasure in those who do them.
The heathen have seen the light and ha"e rejected it-that is the
condemnation. "When they knew God, they glorified him not as God,
neither were thankful." They ga\'e God up, and so He gave them up
to all manner of wickedness. But God never ignores a hungry heart.
If the heathen would walk in the light they already have, God would
give them more light; He would move heaven and earth to bring them
into the light of the gospel. The difficulties they fa ce, however, are
almost insurmountable. 1t is very seldom a pagan soul battles through
the obstacles and comes to a missionary asking for the gospel. God
therefo re asks H is missionaries to go to them.
Is there hope for the heathen? Yes, there is, and it lies mainly in
ou r response to the great missionary challenge of our Saviour who
calls us to take the Word of Life to the "untold millions" who are
"still untold."

school it was not possible for me to go
to high school. This disappointed IllC.
] n Japan it is the ambition of every
young person to pass entrance cxaminations into the best high schools and
colleges, thus giving thcm bettcr opportunities for finding employment in thi s
over-populated country.
Though 1 had to go to work so
you ng. still r had great hopes of continuing my education later. As the years
went by I realized that th is would not bc
possible and my dreams were sha ttered.
AIy friends werc graduating from high
school, finding good posit ions, and cntering collcgcs, while I was [orgotten.
I soon developed a deep scnse of inferi ority and loneliness.
T o forget my mi sery I began to drink
heavily. While st ill a teen-ager I became a public 1111 isance, staggering
about thc strects a t night. What would
happen to me-where could I go fo r
help? There seemed to be no alternativc
but more drink. Often a policeman
would p ick mc lip from the street and
lead mc home. Afterward.o; 1 hated
myself for acti ng li ke a foolish old man,
but any purpose for living had di:;appeared and I only wished to die. 1\Iany
times I considered suicide, but 1 was
afraid to die.
Over the years my eyes became \'ery
bad as a result of drinking so mllch
cheap whiskey. I could hardly sec to
read a book.
When it seemed that I could not bear
such a life any longer somconc handed
me a piecc of pape r. It invitcd me to
attend an evangeli stic meeting- what
fllaf was I had no idea! nut the prog ram sounded interesting and it was
free. I t seemed some power drcw me
to that auditoriu m. There, when J was
twenty-four years old I heard for the

first tillle ill Illy life of the one living
God who lovcs us.
r saw young p<.'ople happily singing
choTll ses and wished that I could be so
carefree. COllld it be true th:'It there
was only one God? I had always belie\'ed
that there were many gods for various
needs, and that I must pray to my dead
ancestors daily. Ilow much 1110rc simple if there was truly one God for all
people o f all nations. Glorious news
- but how could I kllOw if it were truc?
The next night I heard of Jesus who
willingly died 011 the cross to save lIIe
from sin and to give me peacc and
eternal lifc. 1 could understand nonc of
this messngc, bUl I kncw I wanted my
life to be differcllt. If this Christ was
rcal, J did ~o want to kllOw 1I im! So
I quickly walked forward to take Him
as my Sa"iollr, /lot knowing wha t it
would mean in the days to come.
From that moment Illy life began to
change. I becamc so busy seeking morc
of this new truth that , forgot ahout
drink and have nC\'er wantcd another
drop to this day. I began attending
nightly meeting,,> a t the missionary's
church near my homc and Illy unrest
and anxiety gradually di~'\ppcarcd. It
W:lS as if I had ne\'cr had a problem
at all. God seemed to walk beside me
and J learfled to talk with Ilim as lie
filled my heart with Hi~ I>cace and joy.
\\'hen I heard the llIe~1k'lgc of divine
healing. I belie\'cd and li e wonderfully
healed my eyes so that now I can iopend
hours at a time studying and re:ldlllg

I believc that before I cvcr heard

It is in your power to supply
Japan's Greatest Need

ful truths of God's W ord and if you
could see them develop into spiritual
leaders as we have seen them develop,
you would agree that Bible school is
a great work. Seventy post-war graduates of OUT Japan Central Bible institute arc active in the full -gospel ministry today. Among them are the C. A.
president of Japan, the editor of our
monthly p.1.pcr, the editors of Oll r Sunday school papers, the speaker on our
national radio program, and four parttime Bible school teachers.
1£ you were to sit in our e.xccutive
presbyters' meeting of the Japan Assemblies of God and feel the burden
of the whole field of Japan, feel the
desperate need for qualified, trained
workers to put into strategic areas that
we want to open to the full gospel;
or if you were to spend some twenty·
four hours each week teaching those
prospective workers as my wife and I
do at the Bible school- you probably

would feel with us that the $400 needed
each mont h to operate the Bible school
is one of the most important needs in
Japan today. But this is not Japan's
greatest need.
If you were working in the radio
department of our Japan Assemblies of
God, spending hours each week train·
ing the choir and attending to the many
details in volved-a nd then realized that
every time you broadcast over the
Tokyo station alone you have a respon·
sibility of reaching 25,()(X),()(X) with the
full gospel-you would feel with us
that the need of more broadcasting
time is imperati,'e. \Ve are now broad·
casting over seven stations in Japan,
reaching a potential audience of
over 40,()(X),0Cl0 each week. \ Ve can
reach another area with a potential
audience of 9,OCXl,0CXl for another $50
per week. This is a real challenge,
but again I do not feel that it is the
greatest need in Japan today.
If you were in the Sunday school
work, teaching Japan's myriads of chi!·
dren, you would feel that every eHort
put forth to win these boys and girls
to the Lord would be most important.
Or if you were in the literature work
you undoubtedly would feel that because of the high literacy rate in Japan
(the highest in the world) you would
want to publish more fuU·gospel liter·
ature for the millions who do not know
Christ as their Sa,'iour.
If you were out pioneering a new
work-if you had a good tent, a loudspeaker set, and the Speed-the· Light
equipment you needed to hold an evan·
gelistic campaign and then lacked only
$100 for advertising, land rental, and
other necessary expenses-you might
feel that the greatest need would be
that $100.
If you had worked for several months
after holding such evangelistic campaigns and had a group of new believers in a home or small rented hall;
and if, after several months of wait·
ing, a Bible school graduate came to
pastor the new group and then you
still could not find a suitable place for
regular services; you would then feel
as we feel right now- that the $4,()(X)
to $5,000 needed for a church building
is a very great need, Yet, again, this
is not alIT greatest need.
Do not misunderstand me, please.
Our Bible school is second to none in
producing qualified, trained workers
here in Japan and we need monthly
suppo rt for the operation in the schoo!.

wonderfully opened the way for us to
establi sh a church in this area all the
outskirts of T okyo, we think of the
many Japanese who have knelt in thi s
building seek ing the truth, and of many
others who have heard the gospel from
OliT loudspeakers.
H ow often have we wished that our
eyes were fountains of tears that we
might weep in behalf of tl~e multitude
4O,OC>O,OC>O with the full gospel ever)'
week, broadcasting over se,'clI stations
here in Japan- is "ery important and
warrants your support. Our Sunday
school and litcrature departlllcnts arc
presenting not only the salvat ion message but also the truth of the fullgospel experience, and funds are needed
to expand our publications. Right now,
some of our Assemblies of Go<l mi!>sionaries arc limited becaU!:ie of the
lack of funds to hold specia l evangelistic meetings. There are groups of
believers meeting in a room six by
nine feet because they can find no
better place to meet. \Ve are very conscious of these conditions here today.
But these are not the grc.:,test needs
of Japan.
The greatest need in Japan today
is for you personally to pray for each
one of your missionaries laboring in
Japan. If you will pray for us, the
Lord "fn speak to your hearts and all
of our financial needs will be met. 1£
you will pray, we will be able to secure
more and better radio time; we will
be able to increase our literature and
S unday school programs; our Christ's
Ambassadors program will ad"aTlce;

provided. All of thi s is possible if you
and I will sincerely pray for japan.

Des1ring to reach out to the multitudes that pass by each day, we planned
a short evangelistic mecting to he held
in a beautiful public hall. As expenses
were high. we wrote letlt'rs home asking for help. But whell the time came
for the meetings not on(' offering had
heen received . j u!>t eight days before
the meetings began we l o~t our second
baby boy and our heart:-> were hea\'y
with grief and di~appo inlmcnt. We began to wonder if God were with us
in ou r planning.
But He was. During the three nights
of OIlT re\·ival mceting ahol1t Ol1e hundred Japanese were dealt with for salyutiOll. The attendance for the three
nights totaled 2,400. It is difficult to
get these people interested enough to
begin attending one of the local assemhlies. Only eternity will tell how
many werc s..,ved but we know of fi,'e
who were sayed in those meetings and
have been bapti zed ill watcr.
One of the young converts, ilfr. Syu
Sekillloto, is now a Sunday school
teacher. (Ilis testimony appears ill thi s
issue of The Pell/t'costal EVOIlgei.) As
we see Sekimoto San so eagerly teaching his class of boys and girls each
week we realize that the meeting was not
in vain. \\'e will not he afraid to bunch
another such meeting. \\'e 111l1.!>t go to
the people, and with your help we ca n
do it more effectively. God's business
is the greatest business in the world.
This spring God answered prayer and
pro\'ided a fine japanese cou ple who
are gradl1ates of Central Bihle rllstilute in Tokyo to p..1stor the Kichijoji
church. The small adult cong regation

had been paying on the church building
each month, and now they have the
added responsibility of supporting their
pastor. They are still faced with a debt
of almost $1,700 on the building. We
feel that without this heavy debt the
church will be able to go forward to
greater victory and we arc trusting that
many of you will be led to help us.
As we celebrate the Protestant cen~
tennial in Japan this year we realize
that millions have yet to hear the true
message of s;dvation for the first time
and that multitudes of others have not
recognized it as the truth they need.
Our hearts cry out to God as we hear the
bells ringing before the shrines in the
homes of our neighbors. We pray that
He wilJ send a mighty 1110Ve of His
Spi rit to open the closed hearts of 111il~
lions of Japanese so that every home
will be touched by Ilis light before He
returns. Pray with us that the Ki chi~
joji Gospel Church will be a bright
lighthousc guiding many to the harbor
of safety.
Beyond the need of this one church
arc the needs of Japan as a nation. Aft~
er one hundred years of Christian evangelism by Protestants, the born-again
Christians in this country number less
than 200,C(X). So it would seem to us
missionaries here in the " land of mis~
sionary heartbreak" that millions of
sou ls in this cou ntry, for whom Christ
died, are bound for an eternal death.
There has ne\'er been a general re·
vival-a n outpouring of the Holy Spirit
-in Japan and we believe that nothing
less than united, travailing, prevailing
prayer will bring it aoollt. W ill you
pray? Rray in the Spirit. Pray for great
and mighty things. Pray for the millions
of per ishing souls in Japan, that this
may truly become the land of "the rising
SUIl of righteousness."
Tokyo is said to be the largest city in
the world (over 9,C(X),C(X) inhabitants)
but at present there arc only two
American Assemblies of God mission~
ary famil ies, two British Assemblies of
God couples, and one Canadian Pellte~
costal couple stationed in this great
city. In other parts of Japan there are
four couples and four single ladies who
arc members of the Japan field felJow~
ship of the Assemblies of God from the
United States. With so few workers
spread out so thinly, untold opportlln i ~
ties for gospel work and ministry must
go unclaimed and unavailing. May God
impress cvery reader \\'ith the urgency
of the Japan situation and the need of

following front-page story on May 27,
1959,
"WELKOM, Tuesday Coshes,
knives, and stolen goods arc among
articles surrendered voluntarily by con·
\rerts to the Assemblies of God faith
following an evangelistic campaign in
the Thabong Native Township here.
Among items given up are a .32 Luger
automatic pistol, wrist watches, c1oth~
ing. a pr imus stove, amulets, and witch
doctor's horns.
"The two African clergymen who
have been receiving these 'offerings'
are the He\'. P. F. Molefe and the
Rev. 13ethllel Mofokeng.
"M r. M ofok eng told me that con~
verts to the church in the gold fields
now number hundreds. many of them
former tsotsies and criminals.
"'I was a tsotsi myself; said Mr.
Mofokeng, 'before I became a COil vert
and finally a minister of the Assembl ies
of God.
"'1 was proud of the blanket 1 worc
as my badge of the notoriOl1 S Russian
gang. r carried a stick and sometimes
more dangerolls weapons, and knew
how to use them.'''

handed over to the police.
"Shots have been fir ed through the
canvas of the tent the clergymen often
use on evangelistic campaigns. On one
occasion an attempt was made to soak
their tent in petrol and set it on fire."

article is gi\'en by Vernon Pettenger,
Assemblies of God missionary in South
Africa. He writes:
"On Sunday night, May 24, T f'e~
ceh'ed a phone call from Philip !\'lolefe
that in \Velkom on Saturday night
someone had COI11(, to the front with a
revolver and handed it to our young
preacher, Bethuel Mofokeng. 13rother
i>.[ofokeng who was saved in Ve reenig~
ing when we were there, was afraid
and did not know what to do. So
carly i>.fonday morning we left for
\Velkom and Philip 1'101efe came with
me. \Vhen we arrived we found, in
addition to the gun, a couple of boxes
of stolen things that had been handed
to the evangelist at the meeting.
"The next morning we went to the
Chief of the c.I.O. (the same as the
American F.B.I.) at the advice of the
police because any Afr ican caught with
a gun in this country is arrested. What

would prompt an African in a crowded

by walking to the altar and laying down
a gun. The detective chief assured
me that there would be no further in·

Water Baptism at 40 Below Zero

unusual way among the people of some
of the native villages in the "bush
coulltry" of northern Alaska.
In Stevens Village, located on the
Yukon River some 100 mil es north of
Fairbanks, a few converts had expressed
the desire to go "all the way with
God," whi ch meant they wcrc willing
to be baptized-by immersion.
Only those missionaries who have
li ved and worked in these villages realize th e significance of this step, for
when a persOIl li ves with the people
he is able to observe the effects of
their ancient cultures. It takes time to
realize that years of tradition create a
way of life that is hard to change.
The people do not even think as we
do. It becomes the work of the mi s·
sionary to bridge the diffcrence in cultures-and bridge building is not done
in a day.
Concerning mi ssionary work Jesus
said, "Go ... teach all nation s." And
I saiah declares that " precept must be
upon precept, linc upon linc, here a
little, there a little .... "

of missionary work- the victorious report s. l3ut missionary work in Alaska
is often the most tedious and d ishearteni ng work in thc world. Notw ithstanding th is, the gospcl is still "the power
of God unto salvation," and hecause
of this the missionary does see precious fruit frOIll his ministry.
J11 the villages, water baptism by im mCTsion is contrary to tradition. It
would not have been difficult to
sp rinkle or pour water on the head s
of "collvert s," but it took a great deal
of courage for them to obey the plain
command of our Lord. \Ve bcgan to
rea lize what Jesus meant when He
sa id, " H c that believeth alld is bap ti::ed
shall be savcd ." Indeed, we could
read ily understand Ananias' command
to "Arise, and be baptizcd. and wash
away thy si ns" (Acts 22:16). On
many mission fields , conversion and
baptism are practi cally synonymous.

Baptism not only takes 0 11 a new
meaning to A laska missionaries, but it
also prescnts a practical problem. No
built;in baptistries grace most mission
stations, nor do rivers or lakes with
four fcct of ice afford vcry favorable
accommodation s.
Thcll how does one go about arranging a bapti smal service with the
temperature well below zero ?
I talked this over with B. P. Wilson,
pastor of the Fairbanks Assembly
which is hub for the many native works
in the arca. "What shall we use for
a baptistry?" I asked.
l3rother Wilson outlined an idea for
a portable baptistry. He explained that
it could be made of heavy canvas,
thorough ly waterproofed, measuring
six feet long, three feet ,vide, and three
feet deep. Loops around the r im
through which poles could be inserted
would be the stabiliz ing featllrc. This
collapsible bapt istry could easily fit in
hi s plane so that all villages could
utilize it.
The anticipated baptismal day ar·
ri\'cd with the temperature fluctuating
bel\vecn 30 and 40 degrees below zero.
l3esides Pilot Wilson, the "sanctified"
Piper Pacer plane winging over the
vast Alaskan wilderness carried missionary Gordon Olson, myself, and the
yet-untried baptistry .
Donald Nelson, Stevens Village missionary, came running to the river landing strip to greet us.
Almost immediately we began preparations for the service. A fire was
built outdoors on which we placed a
fifty-gallon drum. Somcone chopped a
hole in the ice to get to the water.
Then came the laborious work of
"packing" the water up the hill to the
drum. Soon after the drum was filled,
complications arose. As the fire heated

the bottom, the Arc tic cold worked at
the top. Our water was heating on the
bottom but freezing on top! \\'e wondered which element would he the more
potent. \Ve could not take time to find
out. The drum was transferred to the
quonset mission and a plumber's pot
(the plane's heating dev ice in cold
weather ) was placed undernea th . Pans
of water were heated all every available stove. Eventually we had enough
warm water to fill the baptistry.
"\Ve baptize you in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost. Amen." It was a thrilling
moment when Kilburne George, village
chief and first conve rt, was bllficd in
the waters of baptism. Other Indians
followed as the amazed villagcrs looked
on.
\Ve were all very weary that night
after service, but in our hearts wns an
unspeakable joy-a mighty \'ictory had
been won. The gospel had in vaded the
native cu lture; tradition had bowed before truth and reality; light had. o,'ercome many years of darkness-and we
were privileged to witness it. S ince
then other baptismal se n 'ices hnve been
conducted in Stevens ns well as other
nati"e villages.
\Ve plnnned such a service later for
the Eskimo Assembly nt Barrow. God
had been doing a wonderful work in
the church.

desire to follow the Lord in water

the opportunity available immediately.
The Barrow Assembly has a baptistry, one of the few in Alaska, but

to obtain ill Barrow during the winter.
The lakes freeze to the bouom, To
get water we have to hook up the dog
team, mush five miles to the lake,
scrape the snow away, chop off chunks
of ice. return home and put the icc
in a fifty-gallon drum located ncar the
stove. 1t takes about five days for icc
to melt!
For the baptismal sen'ice we would
need quite a supply to fill the "con"erted" water tank which measures
2.0 ft. deep, 2% ft. wide and 6 ft.
long. (It is large enough to b..1.ptize
most people, providing. of course, that
the minister officiates from the outside.)
We decided to ask for help from
the nearby Dew Line. I went out to
the base and found the officinl very
co-operative. lie said he would send
a fire truck dO\\,11 to fill the baptistry
for us. This was sure to .5..we us a
great deal of work.
To appreciate what followed you
would have to 1I11derstand that the baptistry is located in the furnace rOOI11
behind the church platform. For the
baptismal service, a panel is removed
from the wall exposing not only the
candidate and the minister but also the
environs of the furnace and stock room.
A call of pumpkin. a bottlc of vinegar,
or the pastor sho\'cling coal between
immersions may catch the observe r's
eye!
The fire truck arrived at an inopportune time-during' the preaching at
our Friday night services. J had no
choice but to have the baptistry filled
at this moment. The noise of the force
of the water against the metal baptistry was most distracting. but what
I sa\\" was more disturbing. I had
never seen such rusty water. I was
tempted to call a halt; hut then I
realized that it was too late to melt ice.
We filled the baptistry and two dr ums.
Then we gave the signal for the fireIllan outdoors to stop the pumps, hut
the water kept com ing. \Ve switched
the hose frantically from one vessel
to the other while crying for the man
to stop the water. \Yhat we didn't
realize was that the 30 degrees belowzero weather hnd frozen the pump open
and the poor man was unable to close
it for a time. Just as the water was
about to overflow the baptistry and
flood the auditorium, the fast-thinking
fireman disconnec ted the hose nnd
sa"ed us from all unscheduled "mass
baptism."
On the day of the baptismal service,
if you had visited in some of the
homes of our people you would have
seen pots and tubs of all descriptions
heating on the stoves. We too filled
tubs and drums, heating the water with
hlow torches and a plumher's pot. By
service time the red, rusty water was
quite warm.
1t was a t hrillin~ service to say the
least. The church was packed. \Ve
really did not know how many wcre
going to be b..1.ptized. Approximately
twenty had indicated their de ... ire but
the number exceeded our expectation.
I lo!.t COunt as the ~.tream of happy
people continued to step into the baptistry. After the service I was told
tllnt thirty-two had obeyed the Lord's
command.
\\'e were grateful for the extra dnml
of water we had ready, because so
much was carried away by the dripping
~arlllents that we had to add the extra
fifty gnllons. Even so, it took a little
longer to baptize the last few because
I had to await the return ing wave so
that the ··burial" might be complete.
I could well understand John the Baptist's desire to baptize in Aellon "because there was much water there." It
is difficult to baptize in shallQi.(' water.
Other humorous incidents occurred.
There was the mall who forgot to take
off his mukluks (skin boots). He had
to send for a dry p..1.ir to go home.
A couple of the taller Eskimos humped
their heads all the elld of the abbrevin ted baptistry.
In spite of the complexities of the
service, God's wonderful presence permeated the atmosphere. I cnn still hear
the shouts of victory as the converts
came up alit of the water.
It is true thnt God's people are the
snllle the world oyer, and there may
be a similarity in the way services are
conducted. But yOll may go th e world
oyer and not find anythi ng' quite like
a baptismal sen' icc-A la ska style.

has bcen oiled now so it is much better
than before.
As we reach thc halfway mark on
our trip we pass the Bita Ilochee Assemblies of God j\liss ion for the Kavajos. It is si tuatcd in a barren valley
with high mcsas on each side and the
dust docs lo\"e to roll down this valley
cO\'ering e\'c rythi ng i1l its path. \Vhen
we are twenty-fivc miles from Ollr destination we come to Keams Canyon
where our children went to school when
we mini stered out therc. \Ve descend
into a stecp canyon and follow it until
we come to a little more open country
where the Second ~Iesa H opis live.
All a long thi s road we notice peach
orchards and smal1 corn fields. Now
and then we see an Indian on a burro
herding his sheep with his faithful
dog beside him.
At last we begin our climb tip the
mesa. \\le are on dirt now and the
ro."ld is more like a path. The children are jolted as we drive along. but
they seem to enjoy it. Our "church"
is a native Hopi house in which the
owner li"es and as we draw ncar we
can see the children outside playing.
It is almost 10:30 a.m. and time for
church so the people are waiting.
After ullioading the accordion and
opemng the ser vice with prayer we
have a time of singing, for Indians
love to sing. Our congregation is
scated on bed, floor, benches, and
chairs. The people listen attentively to
the Word of God. Trouble has left
its mark on some faces, but gradually
the peace that only God can give is
changing the sad eyes and bringing
happy expressions.
After the altar service we give out
the clothing. Then the ladies begin to
sew, using the two treadle machines
and needles and thread. We visit with
each one individually. inquiring about
famil y and fri6nds. At noon our pot
of beans is warmed up and set on the
table with whate\'er the I ndians had to
bring- perhaps dry bread, canned meat,
boilcd cggs, or potatoes, and now and
thcn a can of fruit.
It is nearing 3 p.m. and we must
start home. Good-byes are said with
the promise ( the Lord willing ) of another service next week. If time permits we make calls on absentees before we go home. It is late and we
arc tired upon arriving home bu t we
thank God for thc privilege of ministering to a people who need the light
of the gospel now! Pray for them,
for you too ha\'c a responsibility to
spread the gospel in the homeland as
well as in foreign lands.

" WE ARE LARGE ENOUGH"
"\Ve aTC large enough." Few pastors or churches have ever made such
a drastic statement. Yet the pastor of
a thriving denominational church in the
west uttered those vcry words to his
board of deacons eighteen yeare: ago.
At that time this particular church
had an attendance of 300, but both the
pastor and the deacons agreed the
church was large enough. No, they
hadn't lost the vision or even grown
complacellt. In fact, the exac t opposite
was true.
The pastor, a devout man with a
genuine burden for souls, had caught
a vision for taking the city. li e had
gone before his deacon board \vith an
elltirely unselfish idea for ex lending
the gospel witness in the area, and he
had found hi s brethren ready to cooperate. Rather than planning for one
gigantic central church, they planned
to reach out into various strategic parts
of the city and establish several new
congregat ions. In that way they felt
a more effective work could be done.
Prayerfully the plan was de\'eloped.
Half a dozen general locations were
agreed upon, but at the $..'lme time it
was determined that the program would
be a long-range one. Six or more
churches would not be opened suddenly.
1nstead, the beginning would be small.
They would open one first. Then, ill
due time, another, and another .. '1'0 be
too hasty and over-ambitiOlls could
spell defeat. To move slowly and deliberately would be more certain.
In the eighteen years since the plan
was first conceived, the vision has become a reality. Today, instead of JUS t
one church of that particular denomination attempting to reach the city, seven
are doing the job.
Did the mother church lose by her
unselfish concern? Ko. Today her attendance runs o\'er 1,(xx). Combined
attendance of the mother church and
the new ones she sponsored rUIlS up
to almost 3,000.

I'm still there, and happy for the privilege. Happy, that is, to minister to the
inmates e\'ery Friday afternoon in this
Ilew jail which has no bars-not the
\'ertical ones. at any rate. The windows are horizontally st reamlined with
narrow awning-type openings.
vVarden Edward J. O' Hara cou ld not
grant my request to hold a monthly
service because several groups were aircady filling this lime. When I suggested a weekly counseling service to
Protestant inmates who felt a need
for such, the warden quickly consentcd
with warmth and enthusiasm.
It took but a few weeks for me to
feel my need of assistance. The time
was simply too short to gi\'e ample
time for each requested inter\'iew during my weekly \'i sits. l asked Samuel
Roickle to join me in this effort to
reach men for God. lie instituted Bible courses as an effective through-thewcek follow-up plan. These include

ment courses from Springfield. For
the men who find thcse too difficult
becnu:.e of educational limitations, we
offe r a simpler course in the Gospel
of John.
Some inmates cxpress their appreciation. One wrOte, "1 thank you \"Cry
kindly for ha\'ing gi\'cn me this Bible
course which has drawn me closer to
the Lord Jesus Christ."
Another inlllate who wa s helped was
inspired to write a poem, "Not Alone."

Ilundreds of mcn ha\'c come to us
for help, and a number of them ha\'e
accepted Christ as their pe rsonal Saviour. :\Iany resort to the excuse as old
as .\dam·s-p.."lssing the blame for their
sin on to another. \\'e do lIot comfort
these. \\'ith God's Word we try to
help them see themselves as God sees
them, and the 1101), Spiri t causes the
drunkard, the check-forger, the thief,
the scx crimi nal, the murdercr to find
abundant pardon. \Ve have seen the
Lord work and it is marvelous in our
eyes.
Another wonderful open door is our
weekly ministry at the Nassau County
Children's Shelter. Ilere we meet the
ju\'enile delinquent under sixteen yea rs
of age. In these informal serl'ices we
were privileged to see 145 young people come forward and kneel in humble
prayer during 1958.
J lere also the boys and girls are
given simple Bible courses in the Gospel of John. One teen-ager wrote:
" J came home from the shelter last
Thursday. I have made up my mind

to go to church every Sunday and take
your Bible course. 1 enjoy taking this
course and 1 have learned very
much. . .. I have my own Bible in my
drawer :1.t home and I took it out for
the first time in two years."
Unfortunately we have met some
young men in the coullty jail to whom
we had previously ministered in the
Shelter. Satan is subtle; he is an artist
in deception. The devil has a long
record of success in brain-washing
since hi s triumph in Eden. But thanks
be to God for the potential 'victory
there is in the Person of Jesus Christ!

work that goes on behind locked doors.

pleased with the results of the VBS
conducted by Lois Carruthers. They
were able to reach boys and girls who
attend the Indian Boarding School before they were sent home for the summer. A number were saved.

r had been baptized in water almost
ten years before, but r had not understood then about salvation. 1 had no
joy or peace or sense of si ns forgiven.
1 had been taught that we should be
baptized first and then join the church;
but now, of course, I realize that no
church can save liS, but only Christ
has that power. r attended the hearing church, although 1 was deaf and
there was no one to interpret for me.
r am Sllre that r did bel ieve and love
God at the time I was baptized in water,
but r was groping for the light of salvation-the born-again experience about
which 1 knew nothing.
After I was married , my husband
and I went to several chu rches that
were conducting revivals. Every time,
when the services were about over, I
would feci so peculiar and guilty in
my soul. I did not realize that I was
not really saved.
\Vhen we were attending the revival
in the Elkhart Assembly, I began to
doubt that I was truly saved. A lady
interpreted these meetings for the deaf.
I talked with the evangelist after the
service and told him I felt I was a
sinner . He asked me whether I believed in Jesus and, of course, I said,
"Yes." As he explained to me, I begall to understand that we must be
S:lved first and then baptized. I was
born again that night and all my doubts
were dispelled. \Vhat a wonderful experience!
Four months later, my husband and
T were in a head-on auto colli sion and
I was almost killed. I was so thankful
that I was S:lved and was ready to
meet the Lord should I not survive.
I was baptized again in water at the
Indiana Camp in 1956 and also received the b..."lptism of the Holy Spirit!
The experience gave me "joy unspeakable and full of glory."
Due to complications from injuries
I had received in the accident, I had
trouble walking. had pain in the right
kidney and right side of the pelvic
bone, and was troubled with extreme
nervousness. I was prayed for in a
revival at our church and knew I was
healed. The next day I prep.."lred to
wash the windows outside and Illy mother remonstrated, "Oh, no. you can' t do
that and lift the heav)' stOrm windows."
I n my heart I knew that I had the
strength from the Lord. My parents
were very surprised that I was able
to do this; in fact, they could hardly
believe it. T am still able to do heavy
work, thank the Lord.
r..'1years have not yet been opened,
although I have bad prayer for my
hearing. I know that it was most important for me to be saved fir st and
receive the baptism of the H oly Spirit.
I still believe that in God's own time
He will heal my ears. I am serving
the Lord, in His will, and trusting Him
to use my life for I-iis glory. ~ray
God use thi s testimony to help some
deaf person who has not yet seen the
light of the wonderful experience of
salvat ion.

than to let the confession stand.

A revival has come to James Harvey
Memorial School, our school for boys
in India. )'1iss Rosslyn Robinson, missionary teacher at the school, writes,
"We felt led to ask one of our national
teachers of the Hardoi Bible School
to come to us for special meetings. He
asked us to spend the previous week in
prayer, which we did. By the time
Girga Dayal arrived God had already
begun to work in our midst. Brother
Dayal preached under the anointing of
the Holy Spirit. All of the students
either repented of their sins or made
a new consecration during the first two
or three days of the meetings. Then
God began to pour out His Holy Spirit
upon us-both old and young, regardless of denomination. By the end of
the week, several had been sa\'ed and
twenty-one had been filled with the
Holy Spirit."
South Africa
APARTHEID FORCES SCHOOL TO MOVE
The African Bib le Training Institute,
located at Witbank, Transvaal, South
Africa, will have to be relocated, according to a recent decision of the
South African government. Missionary Fred Burke, princip<-1.1 of the school,
writes, "For many months there has
been uncertainty concerning the future
of the school. This is due to the policy
of the government in South Africa of
separating the Africans from the white
people and establishing 'African states.'
"Now, in common with many other
institutions all over this country, we
have been given notice that we must
move our school by June 1961. A
place must be found where the students
can stay in a native resen'e but white
teachers must live across the boundary
in t he 'white area ' and cross over daily
to teach in the school. This, of course,
means that we will have to close the
school at Spring Valley."
A possible site for relocation has
been found at Potgietersrllst. Pray that
God may supply the needs of the
school.

LATEST NEWS OF OUR WORLD-WIDE MISSIONARY PROGRAM speaks of
self-sacrifice on the part of our American constituency as well as
by our foreign missionaries.
THE OFFERING RECEIVED FROM DELEGATES at San Antonio during the
General Council Foreign Missions Rally amounted to more than
$ 2 0,000 (including short-term pledges). W -E Da y offerings reported by telephone added up to approximately $56,000 and It was
estimated that when all the offerings are reported the total W-E
Day offering will pass the $100,000 mark.
NOEL PERKIN ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT from the post of Foreign
Mis sions director, after filling that off1ce for thirty-three years.
J. PhllJp Hogan was elected to succeed him.
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS AT SAN ANTONIO made this a historic General
Council in that three of the most prominent leaders In the Assemblies
of God are leaving office simultaneously.
J. R. FLOWER RESIGNED from the position of General Secretary after
serving as a General Council official for thirty-siX years.

Florida, was elected to the office of Assistant General Superintendent.
DELEGATES TO THE GENERAL COUNCIL were told that Victor G. Grelsen
is the new Field Secretary of the Assemblies of God for Europe, the
Middle East, and Southern Asia . Before joining the faculty of the
Assemblies of God t raining center in Denmark, Brother Greisen was
superintendent of the Kansas District In the U. S .
A MISSIONARY IN WEST AFRICA suffered a severe beating August 20.
Mi ss Charlese Spencer, Assemblies of God missionary in Ghana,
was beaten by members of the Bimoba tribe when she, with the
national pastor, four African Christians, and two govemment policemen, attempted to release a Christian girl who was being held
against her w ishes by worshipers of the Konsi fetish. Miss Spencer
narrow ly escaped death . She was seized by the Africans and severely beaten with clubs and fists, but managed to break a way and take
refuge in he r Speed-the-Light car. Later a la rger fo rce of policemen
freed the girl from the fetish enclosu re. The govem ment has arrested
the village chief and 22 of the assailants.

Answer: \Vithou t reservation, I can say that literature
with the help o f the Lord ha s been the larges t single
factor in O Uf success in It aly. Literature has been the
key to ope ning the door for men and wOlllen to come to
a saving knowledge o f Christ.

permitt ed to distribute tract s and Gospels freely whereever we wi sh. \Ve thank God for this. \Vc arc al so free
to print any lite rature we wish, whether books or materials for the Sunday school or for any pha se of our

Question: Was there a literature program in Ital y be~
fore BGMC came to your aid?
Answer: When we landed in Italy in September of
1951 , the only publica tion we had wa s a monthly twelve~
page booklet which was the official organ of the As~
sell1blies of God o f Italy.
Question: Brother Piraino, what was the amount of
the first offering you received fr om nGi\IC in 1951, and
what was it u sed for?
Answer: We received $250 from the Boys and Girls
Missionary Crusade. This was enough to print the
very fir st Sunday school quarterly in Italy.
Question: Would you give us a brief summary of the
progress of the Assemblies of God in Italy over the past
eight years?
Answer: God has marvelously blessed the work in
Italy, particularly in the pa st few years. There were
about 260 churches in 1950; today there are over 525.
This phenomenal growth ha s resulted in a shortage of
workers. However, we feel the recent enlargement of
our Bible school program and facilities will help to re~
lievc this situation. I might add that today the largest
Protestant denomination by far in Italy is the Assell1~

blies of God. 1 feel that much of our progress is due
to the excellent literature program which God has enabled us to advance.
Question: What typ e of literature do you print?
Answer: W e pr int gospel tract s of all kinds and sma ll
booklets for evan ge lization purposes. We print four
Sunday school quarterlies : the Adult Student, Junior
Pupil, Primary Pupil, and Primary Toeacher. We al so
print the Sunday School Counsellor. We produce vari~
OllS othe r Sunday school materials such as record books,
etc. \Ve have publi shed hymnals and doctrinal books.
l\ f y, we have just about run the gamut frOIll little oncpage tracts to books of four and five hundred pages.
Question: \Vho handles your translation work?
Answer: Our official translator is an ex-priest, Lawren ce Loranzo Ramacini. He has been translating now
for about five years. As yo u can imagine, Loranzo
Ramacini has a wonderful testimony. Even before his
official ordination to the priesthood he had questions
in his mind concerning certain inconsistencies of Catholic
doctrine. The se questions remained llnan swered in his
mind for many years until finally another ex-priest,
Pietro Salvaggio, who nms our print shop, led him to
a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Both of these
gentlemen have made a wonderful contribution to our
work in Italy.
Question: What facilities do you haye for printing?
Answer: You have asked me something that is so
close to my heart. In 1954 we started a little printing
plant This beginning was made possible by the wonderful members of Camden Assembly of God in Camden,
N. J., who sent us an offering of $8CXl With this money
\ve purchased a sma ll press and hand-cutting machine.
Later, as our work expanded, Speed-the-Light provided
us with a larger press and a folding machine. Today I
am happy to tell you that we have five high-speed
presses and sufficient folding, stapling, and cutting machines to enable us to print millions of pieces of gospel

feet of the many who walked fifty
miles each weekend to Aba (and fifty
miles back again to :\Ibieri after the
Sunday services were over) spoke with
a sincerity and force that was easy to
understand.
\\'eek after week they came-always
with the same appeal, " \Ve want a
church at i\Jbieri."
It all began back in February when
Lorne Fox and Robert Smith were in
the Assembly at Aba, !\igeria, for three
weeks of evangelistic meetings. Some
people from l\lbieri were among the
crowds who attended the services. They
had never seen anything like this at
either of the two large denominationa l
churches in their town. Here was
reality, changed lives. blessing you
could feel. e\'en miracles! And so, after the meetings were over . they kept
coming back, Sunday after Sunday.
Finally, the pastor a t Aba put the
matter before his church . The church
gave an offering to finance a week of
meetings at
i\lbieri.
T wenty-two
Christ's Ambassado rs volunteered to
give up their trading for a week and
to go along to help in any way they
could. Andrew Hargrave, printer-miss.ionary in charge of the Assemblies of
God P ress at Aba., was asked to go

each night as the spe<ial speaker.
Hundreds of pounds of gospel tracts
and l\'igcriOl[ Evangels from thc Speedthe-Light printing equipment at Aba
were loaded into tbe Speed-the-Light
station wagon and the im'3siQIl of
illbieri was begun. The C.A.'s literally
sowed the area down with gospel litera ture. From the first scnice it was
evident that God was moving. II undreds came to the services every night.
An evangelist also conducted day servIces. Alany were saved . healed, filled
with the Spi rit. In one sen·ice Brother
Hargrave counted twenty-four receiving the Baptism at one time.
By the middle of the week the people were asking the C.A.'s to come
and carry their jujus to be bu·rned. On
F riday night the accumulation was set
on fire-jujus of e"ery description,
hand carved, costly, beautiflli. uglyall in a heap. The fire burned all
night, and all through Sa turday and
Sunday.
T he week of meetings has con cluded but the evangelist has stayed
on. T he people arc continuing to come
for early-morning prayer meetings.
Land has been donated and cleared for
erection of a church building. The people have been taught to tithe, A Sunday school has been established with
an enrollment of over l ,300 member s.
After two months, during which the
Speed-the-Light station wagon has made
the lOO-mile round trip each weekend,
the Sunday school continues to average o\'er 1,(xx). illoney is being raised
through church pledges to erect a cement block church building . The con-

house for a pastor. The people are
learning to support the work.
Through this new church it appears
that an entire area will be opened to
the Pentecostal message and ministry.
The Speed-the-Light station wagon and

a very real part in this work. Thank
the Lord for the good work of the
C.A.'s both in the USA and at Aba.

was quiet and uneventful. But should we really call him

Abimelech, too, was not happy about Isaac's prosperity, and
fearing lest I SMc should become too powerful, asked him
to leave the country. A'leekly Isaac complied, packed his
goods, and moved. Twice he dug weBs and each time re·
linquished them to the Phili stines who claimed the right
to possess them . The third time Isaac digged a well, he
was left alone and named the weH, "Rehoboth," which
means enlargement. Observe that after this he received a
new revelation of God.
JeslIs said, "llIessed are the meek: for they shall inherit
the earth." The Christian often gains most by yielding.
Isaac lived the Sermon on the l\lount 18OC) years before it
was preached. \Vhat a rebuke to some of us today who
have heard that sermon time and time again and for some
reason fail to take the preaching of our Lord seriously!

(3) Isaac found water in the time of trouble. Though
opposed and oppressed by the Philistines, he found he was
nevertheless able to continue his well digging and to con·
tinue to find wnter. Christ has made possible for us to
be victorious over all circum.~tances. "In all these things
we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us."

Solomon said. "\\'hell a Illnn's ways please the Lord, he

thee." What a testimony, coming as it did from a former
enemy nnd man of the world! But mind you. these words
would never have heen spoken, nor the covenant of peace
made. if Isaac had done the "natural" thing and returned

5. Trill' Creatlless. In the beginning of the lesson we
implied that Jsaac was a rather ordinary man. Perhaps we
should retrad that statement. It is true that Isaac ne\'er
became a conqueror of cities and armies. ns did hi s il·

greater-his own spirit. For ';he that ruleth his spirit," is
grenter "than he that taketh a city." Provo 16:32.

used in the Bible to symbolize spiritual life (Isa.. 12:3;
John 7:37·39), we nrc not out of order in using the story
of Isaac's well digging to typify the Christian in search
of spiritual things.
( I ) Isaac had to dig fo r water. While it is true that
on occasions blessings from God come unsought, in general,
spiritual blessings nnd results rC<luire definite co-operation
on the part of man. Many Christians try to receive blessing
only by "radiat ion, " that is. by getting under the overflow
of blessing which comes from the life of another who has
had to do the digg ing.
(2) Isaac met with opposition. So do we. In prayer
fo r ourseh'es and others, in seeking the fullness of the
Spiri t, in quiet waiting on God, in united prayer, we meet
opposition of one kind or another. Sometimes we are ns·
sa iled by our own thoughts and cares wh ich come clamoring

was right. Time has become a feti sh
of the \Vestern world. Just glance again
a t the top of this page and notice a
few of the many expressions that have
to do with time. Sound pointless ? Well ,
so does a lot of our ru shing around
to save time in o rder to sit down and
waste it. \Ve kill time: we mark time ;
but never forget , we can't mak e lime.
It is something that starts for YOIl the
instant you aTe born, and keeps on
moving until you die. I 'm talking now
about the time that is given YOIl- it's
yOllr time.
Time is strange. Now you have it;
now you don't. Augustine. who lived
just after Christ, gave a lot of thought
to the subject of time and came up
wi th the following: ';\vhat then is
time? If no one asks me , I know, bu t
if I wish to explain it, I have to admit
that I know not." He obsen'ed that
time past is that which is not because

might be well to pause ami consider
the African woman as a person. She
has the s..'1me ha~ic human needs as
her white neighhors across the sea, hut
she is a part of .\frican culture which
is vastly different from that of Ollr
own country.
The primili\·e .\frican woman is a
slave and is treated as chattel propcrty.
Shc may be onc of se\'cra l wives as
polygamy is pre\·alent. She has nothing to say about wholll she marries;
probably she was promised at birth or
when very young to some man who is
old enough to be her father or grandfather. While she is growing lip the
intended husband pays dowry of grain,
fowl, or animals to the g;rI"s father.
African women cook and keep tbe
hOnle. carry wood and wate r on their
heads, rai"e a family. and may also
work hard in the fields. They arc
often beaten and mi stre."1ted by the husband. Many of Ihem welcome another

wife into the family to help with the
work.
Fortunate is the woman whose husband \)('comes a Christian and who becOllles a Christi an herself. Their lives
and home are changed, although they
are still part of a culture that is not
founded on Chri~tian principles. This
makes many problems for Christian
missions.
The WOlllell who cOllle to our churches are not all s..wed. but man)' of them
are. They arc all illiterate; they have
not had the opportunities our women
in America ha\'e had. They do not
even have a stove to cook on. In stead
they ha"e two rocks and some wood
they have gathered and carried from
the bush. To us, their way of life is
similar to li\'ing in a child's playhouse.
T he Saboba Church \v11C was organized in August, 1958. with thirtynine women present. \Ve meet twice
a month to sing. pray, have a Scripture
lesson and a memory verse. Since these
women arc all illiterate, we feel it is

important to help them memorize some
sc ripture. Each woman is encouraged
to choose some need that she will take
upon her heart and pray for every day.
\\'c cut out the pictures of missionaries
and give them out so that each one
may have somebody especially to pray
for. They also pray for other African
villages, other tribes. and olher coun·
tries. \;\,'c then have a work period.
These women did not know how to
sew, so we let them practise on old
cloth. Then they began sewing handkerchiefs for the Dible school boys.
)\cxt we shall teach them to sew on
buttons and to patch, then cleanliness
and health, cooking and lIutrition, infant and child carc.
One of their projects waS to plaster
the inside of the church, which they
did with mud and cow manure. They
carried the water from wells ill buckets
on their heads. They had the church
half plastered before we knew they
were working. They have 110W whitewashed both inside and outside.
The Yakazia outstation church is
eighteen miles from Saboba, and we
organized a W,MC there with forty-two
women present. Seve ral men came too ;
we told them it was all right to come
if they would work. These women are
a little more primitive than the Saboba
women as they have not had the gospel as long. They need a great deal
of teaching spiritually and otherwise.

\Ve meet Ollce a month. and in addition they meet sometimes Oil their own
for some of their work projects. Their
church is not yet completed and their
first work project was to make a
pounded mud floor and rostrum for
use until such time as they can get
cement. They had to carry water on
their heads for some distance. This
project was completed by Thursday after the first W:\[C meeting all Saturday. They were determined to have it
fini shed in time for the Christmas sen·Ices.
The next time we met with the
Yakazia group there were fifty WOmen,
sixty children and five men present. It
had been announced that their first sewing lesson would be givell, and they
were most anxious to learn . \Ve did
not believe the nat ive pastor when he
said that none of the ladies knew how
to thread a needle. but he was not
joking. All we got done that day was
threading the needle, tying a knot in
the thread, and making a simple running
stitch.
We had not anticipated such a crowd
and found ourselves with insufficient
cloth with which to work. That made
it necessa ry to go a short dist;\Ilce 10
the Yakaz ia clinic to get some of the
wide bandage provided by the USA
\Vomen·s :\Iissionary Councils and tear
litt le strips of it to sew together. They
were so proud of what they had donc
that they all took their work home with
them. Perhaps you wonder how we
handled fifty illiterate women with
sixty wiggling youngsters at large. Only
the Lord knows. and He did help us.
I shall never forget how pleased these
women we re to receive the pictures of
the missionaries for whom they were
to pray. It is a real thrill to work with
them and to see how grateful they are
to be able to learn more of God and
a better way of life.

It was my privilege to visit ~lrs. Palenske in her home thi s
summer, and her courage, determination, and trust in God for her

First Assembly of God in Oshkosh, \Vis., has accomplished more than
many people .... ho aTC not handicapped. About a year and a half ago
Mrs. Palenske became interested in the J.,lissionctte program and read
everything she could find about its purpose and organization. As
she read, her heart became burdened fOr the girls of her church, and
last January she became their sponsor.
Since it is impossible fo r her to go to the church basement, the Missionette meetings are conducted in her home at least once and sometimes
tWice each lIIonth. To keep a dozen or more lively teen-agers occupied is not an casy task, but wilh the help of the Lord Mrs. Palenske
has been able to do so. The fact that her right side is paralyzed does
not keep her from planning activities and helping thc girls if they
get stymied on a project. Shc has an amazing array of handwork
materials in her home. Lovcly recipe books have been made, using
plain white paper for the in~idc and discarded pieces of window shade
lor the cover. Scr;IPS of felt are made into toys for children. Beautiful awards have been made from discarded greeting cards.
At each meeting girls have some kind of shower.
Once it was a
baby shower; another time a school supp ly shower. The most interesting of all was a "surprise shower" when none of the girls told
what they planned to bring. There was a wonderful variety of g ifts,
including a set of embroidered dish towels which one of the girls took
fr om her own hope chest. The girls love to give to missions in this
wa y. Items for the ~hower~ are purrhased wi th their Oll"n earnings.
An old trunk was papered on the illS ide and gilded on the outside
to serve as a treasure che ~t. How thrilling it is to see !lew items
:Idded to it each month! After jUH five and one-half months the
chest was fi!1 ed to o\·crflo\\ing. Items from the chest wefe taken to
the district camp meeting in July and placed with the WMC display
so that missionaries could select the things they needed.
J\ lovely program was presented by the Oshkosh Missionettes on
Sunday, June 21. ~lrs Pakn,ke wrote the script and prepared the
VI sual aid. S he has learned to use her left hand and does IlOt let her
handicap hinder her work fo r the Lord. 1fuch prayer went into the
1>lanning so that the ent ire church would be made aware of what the
M issiollettes stand fo r.
t\t the end of the program the WMC officers were asked to stand,
and the l\Iissionettes pinned on them white carllations which they had
made. Tho: girls wore blue carnations, also of their own making.

Only sixteen per cent of the land in

INTRODUCED
IN
J apan by a Roman Catholic Jesuit missionary in 1549. It was soon outlawed,
however, and the islands were closed
to Christianity for nearly three centur ies.
In 1859 Townsend Harri s, the fir st
American consul in Japan, obtained permi ssion for Americans to reside in four
port cities of the islands. Being an
Episcopalian, Mr. Harris wrote to the
Episcopa l missiOh board, urging them
to send missionaries to the newlyopened Oriental country. John Liggins
and C. W. Williams, then missionaries
in China, were requested to transfer
to Japan. Mr. Liggins arrived at Nagasaki on May 2, 1859, and Mr. Williams
joined him five months later. In November of that same year Dr. and
Mrs. J. C. Hepburn of the Presbyterian Mission and Guida Verbeck and
Samuel Robbins Browll of the Dutch
Reformed ~[ i ssion arrived to enlarge
the missionary force.
Persecution was severe. I t was illegal for a Japanese national to become
a Christian and a strict spy system was
maintained. The head man of each
district was compelled to bring a statement signed by all of his residents:
"Hitherto we have not been of the
sect of Christ ians." The heads of five
families, smallest unit of government,
had to declare: "\,ye have not been

negligent in sea rch for the sect of
Christians."
THE LAND
Japan is a land of islands, mountain s, and volcanoes. Latest population
figures show that 9 1,826, 160 people
live. on the 142,644 square. miles of the
Japanese islands. The four main islands are Hokkaido, Kyushu, H onshu,
and Shikoku. Tokyo, the capital city ,
Komakura Buddo attracts youthful worshipers
J apan ha s had a monarchy for gen·
erations. Legend claims the emperor
to be the son of the sun goddess.
Emperor H irohito is the 124th ruler of
the Imperial Dynasty. Religion and
politics are in separable where such emperor worship is practiced.

museum of religions." It is difficult
to compile statistics for Japan's religions because of the common custom
of professing dual or multiple religious
adherence. To further complicate the
problem, Shinto stat istics often reflect
the s,,'lle of amulets or charms rather

today and the Buddh ists claim some
60,000,000 followers .

Shinto, "the Way of the Gods," is
an indigenous, polytheistic ammlsm
which indudcs ancestor worship. "It
has no codified doctrine or creed of
any kind other than worship offered
to the imperial ancestors and the ance!)t ral spi rits."
J3uddhi!)m came to Japan from China
and Korea ahout A.D. 552. It has expressed its influence morc in the realm
of the fine arts, social institutions, and
cmtoms, and has long been the most
influentia1 power in the religious life
of Japan.

CHRISTIANS IN JAPAN
Professing Christians in Japan today numher approximately 600,000. Of
these, abollt two-thirds are Protestant.
The A$Semblics of God is one of
the brg-c~t evangelical churches ill Japan today. Our work in japan dales
back to 1913 when ~ I r. anel Mrs. C. F.
Juergen~en and th eir daught('rs 1\larie
and Agnes. opened a work in Tokyo.
They wcrc followed in 1914 by ~tr.
and 1\lrs. B. S. ).Ioore who established
a church in Yokohama. It was in 1918
that the P('llIcco-.tal Olltpouring came
and the following year scores of Japancse Christians were filled with the
Holy Spirit.
Mr. and 1\lrs. john Juergenscn and
i\liss Je-.sie Wengler joined the missionary group ill 19 19. Three years
later Miss l\ lae Straub opened a children's home at N'ishillol1liya, Kobe. Today there arc 23 Assemblies of God
mi ssionaries appointed to J ap,-'111.
That Christianity is exerting an in creasing influence in Japan today is
evidenccd by the fac t that twelve per
cent of the memhers of the japanese

World \\'ar II forced the withdrawal
of most missionaries from Japan, but
our own .\Iiss Jcs~ie \\'engler remained
in Japan under house arrest for four
years. She was also th e first Assembl ies of God Illis:.ionary to return to
japan after the war and became our
rcpresentative to General i\lac:\rthur's
headquarters.
The Assemblies of God in Japan was
organized in the spring of 1949 with
sixteen national workers and seven missionaries from Great Britain, Canada,
and the U.S. Superintenden t of the
work is l\1t. Kiyoma YU1lliyama who
is also principa l of Central I3ible I nstitutc in Tokyo. Brother YUllliyama
has worked with Asscmhli es of God
missionaries for more than thirty years.

Carlow is in charge of our literature
program and has an excellent staff of
national translators working with her,
The importance of radio is being increasingly recognized throughout the islands, and a radio committee has been
established to increase the effectiveness
of radio e\'angelisl1l. A studio on the
campus of Central Bible Institute in
Tokyo serves as headquarters for thc
broadcasting ministry.
Tent meetings arc held throughout
the coun try as a means of starting new
churches. \Vhen the tent is taken down
the congregation moves to rented quarters and another church is soon organized and built. 30th missionaries
and nationals serve as evangelists.
Japan presents a challenge to the
Christian world. Loss of faith in the
divinity of the emperor has left many
inhabitan ts of the islands groping for
a true religion. Jesus Christ is their
answer and the Assemblies of God in
Japan is endeavoring to reach the entire chain of islands with the full gospel.

from sleep. All was dark and still.
Then my ears caught a sOllnd, faint
at first, bnt gradually increasing in intensity and power. It was the ni ght
wind-sweeping through the trees,
around the buildings, and away I knew
not where.
I could not tel! from whence it came,
nor where it went, but I heard the
sound thereof, and it was like a deep
moan or an endless sigh. ] listened
carefully, and now the wind seemed to
express the restlessness of souls who
try in vain to find plea sure and sat isfaction in the things of this world .
Outwardly they appear to be ca refree,
but the night wind told me their story.
Their hearts cry out for peace and
rest. And these lost ones are all
around us!
As I listened st ill more carefu1iy T
heard a deeper. sighing than before.
]t was more of a groan. and it seemed
to come from afar, e,'en from across
the waters. It was also the sound of
restlessness but it was morc intense and
full of sorrow. It was very dark. \;Vhat
could this be ? 1t was the cry of milI T W,\S YET K1GlIT WilEN
lions in heathen lands-moaning. yearn ing, dying, knowing not from whence
they were come, nor where they were
going-hut always moving on.
Again 1 listened to the wind, and
now there was a groan a thousand
times more terrible-a wailing and crying and gnash ing of teeth. What could
this be? Then I knew it was lost souls
in hell-forever restless, wailing, re:norscful, hopeless. "\Vhere their worm
dieth 11ot, and the fire is not quenched."
] t was night, and all wa s dark.
Once more 1 listened to the wind.
And my heart was conscious of another deep sigh and cry-an expression of unspeakable agony. It seemed
to come from a broken heart. My own
heart was stirred now, and I felt a deep
and crushing uurden for these lost soul s
who moaned and sighed and waited.
Oh, that broken heart of God, groaning because of the fall of man-grieving over the prodigal son ! I\1a1l had
sin ned, and a ransom was necessa ry to
restore him. \\'here was the ransom?
Jeslls stepped forth and gave Himsel f.
There was grief in our Father's heart,
but He loved us so much that H e gave
Ilis best. "And God heard their groaning ... and God remembered."
But what is this 1 hear? A cry
comes from Calvary that makes the
earth tremble. It is a cry fr om the
broken heart of Jesus: "Father. fo r give thelll." It took His life to gain
their fo rgiveness. But the prisoners
can now be loosed! The moans can
now be turned to shout s of joy!
But still J heard the restless souls
of lost men. Has God forgotten? No!
But can it be that I h;n-e forgotten?
] las the Church forgotten? Has the
vision been lost, the heart hardened,
the prayer life neglected ? Thy brother's
blood cricth-can you hear it? Do you
care? Docs the cry from the broken
heart of Jesus, "Father, forgive them,"
reach your heart and re-echo there?
It was still night when I awoke from
sleep. All was quiet and dark. Then
God spoke. r-.ly heart was stir red. And
J prayed, " Father, help l1Ie never to
forget the message of the wind. r-.lay
I never forget th e cry of the 10SI,
neither the agony of Thy broken heart.
For Jesus' sake. Amen,"
